    My parents had dinner on the tram car restaurant a few years ago for my mom’s 50th birthday and it was extremely smooth even though it’s a vintage tram! It’s probably because of them fitting the tram with air suspension that makes it much smother and comfortable than even the E class trams! :)

    Few points.
    Most of Melbourne and the suburbs is all on streets in a grid pattern, only freeways fan out radially from the city.
    Which means you have to try hard to get lost here, if you miss a turn for example you just take the next turn and in nearly all cases it runs parallel to the road you wanted to be on and you can get to it and the next cross road and that system runs all the way out many miles from the city.
    Unlike Sydney where if you take a wrong turn you are in trouble.
    Other thing is we don't have Uptown Downtown thing in the central city, its all the same town so you don't have to worry about ending up in the wrong part of town by accident.
    The area is roughly divided into corporate business district, restaurants, shopping, night clubs they are not all mixed together.

    • @AuMechanic

      Cheers
      Also mention another thing about tram tracks is they all lead to the city like spokes of a wheel which can be helpful finding your way around.
      Same for trains, we don't have "cross town" trains or trams that don't terminate somewhere in the city eventually.
      You can ask someone how far the tram is away, walk to a tram line and every tram is going to the city or interchanges with one that is and same for trains.
      Once you get to a tram or train line they all go to town or away from town and that's marked at stations and stops.
      To get across town we usually have to go toward town on one line, to then go out of town on another line out.

      Although buses may play the role of cross town public transport. I think it is time that Melbourne starts to implement cross town trains and trams so that people don't need to go into town to go across town. See what I mean?

    • @citybeatdisco19
      @citybeatdisco19 6 лет назад

      Except for the 82 tram :) Doesn't go anywhere near the city & i wouldn't consider the interchange at the end of it, a change to go to the city

      There are a few crosstown trams - the 96 (St Kilda to Brunswick), 109 (Port Melbourne to Box Hill), 6 (Glen Iris to Moreland) and 1 (South Melbourne to East Coburg) all pass through the CBD but start on one side and finish on another, usually south side to north side except the 109 which is more like south side to east side.
      There are also 2 trams that don't go into the CBD at all - the 82 (a small route from Footscray to Maribyrnong which are nearby suburbs in the inner west) and the 78 (North Richmond to Balaclava - although it's technically St Kilda, near the border of Balaclava - down Church & Chapel Streets).

    I would have liked to see what a tram stop looks like and how one can tell once on the tram how to determine where the free zone ends.

    • @XTrapolis942M
      @XTrapolis942M 4 года назад +1

      What a tram stop looks like: Many tram stops in the City have either of these two: Some stops have a platform with a shelter in the middle of the street. Others don't have a platform and are separated from traffic by a fence followed by a yellow "Safety Zone" sign for the traffic. Access the both of these by either a pedestrian crossing or traffic lights, unless its Bourke Street Mall. Other stops in the suburbs are nearly like bus stops, in that you wait at the side of the road and hail down the incoming tram before it arrives to tell the driver to pick you up. In every case, look for the white and green signs that will show the stop name, route number(s) and destination.
      How to tell a boundary of the Free Tram Zone from onboard a tram: Take note of the streets and memorize the 'Hoddle Grid'; the main grid of the Melbourne CBD. Generally, it ends as you cross La Trobe St (north of the grid) towards Carlton, Spring St towards the east to Collingwood, and south across the Yarra River. Alternatively, they'll be bright green Free Tram Zone signs at the stops themselves, sometimes telling you how many stops you have left before you have to continue onwards with a Myki card, and particularly handy when you're on a crowded tram there will be announcements onboard telling you that same information.

      Kinda. I believe the 2 hour thing is really a hold over from the decades old paper ticketing system. The concept of the ticketing actually works more like Single or Daily, but instead of a 'single' fare you get 2 hours of use for the lower price.
      Basically it costs $8.20 (approx $6 USD) for unlimited daily travel on all trains, trams & buses; but if you only use it for less than 2 hours, you only pay half that. It's really a substitute for having a single-ride fare.

    • @maballesaiken8611
      @maballesaiken8611 6 лет назад

      Don't forget that for $8.20 you can listen to the incessant sniffing or get coughed or sneezed on by the latest wave of migrants from Shanghai, apparently they don't cover their mouths in China or know what a tissue is. If you are Japanese or from any other civilised country, this is one city to avoid at all costs !!!!!
