Some more tips: 1. Melbourne weather is "four seasons in a day" i.e. changes very quickly, so dress in layers that you can easily put on / take as needed (especially in spring and autumn), with the outermost waterproof. 2. You may be charged an international transaction fee each time you use your bank card - especially debit cards - to withdrawn money from an ATM (this is levied by your bank, not the ATM) so ask your bank if this applies before you go on your holiday. If this is the case, make less frequent withdrawals of larger amounts, or get a "pre-loaded" card which often don't attract fee. 3. Trams have right of way over cars and pedestrians, so ALWAYS remember this when turning or crossing trams tracks. 4. When ordering a beer, don't drink Fosters (which most Aussies don't drink) - there are MUCH better beers than this. For inexpensive local beers, try Melbourne Bitter or Victoria Bitter instead (Coppers, as shown in thev video, is a good beer, as are Boag's and Cascade from Tasmania), and like most Australian beers, they are actually lager, not bitter, and meant to be drunk cold. In summer in particular, don't order a pint - the beer loses its chill too quickly and doesn't taste as good. 5. Australia has GREAT seafood, just remember they are PRAWNS not shrimp.
For all those jumping down his throat about how he pronounces Melbourne stop getting your knickers in a twist. What do you expect form someone who has for all his life known the word Melbourne as Mel-Born or Mel-Burn not Mel-bin or Mel-ben. He is American by the way, of course he will roll the r's, give the guy a break and be thankful that he did such as great job. Well done mate.
Love your videos! I am a local...lived here all my life and I've travelled to the US and other parts of the world. Some clarifications for you to note: 1/ City shopping hours do tend to vary and shops may open longer in the city than in the suburbs (Melbourne has huge ring of suburbs surrounding the city kind of like LA.). In general the hours are as follows: Monday to Wednesday- 8 or 9am until 5.30pm Thursday and Friday- 8 or 9am until 9pm Most shopping centres (malls) will keep to these hours but small strip shops may choose to close earlier. Saturday- 9am until 5pm Sunday-10am until 5pm There are exceptions in the CBD and the very large shopping centres may stay open a little longer...especially in summer. Supermarkets run 8am until midnight...there are some 24/7 supermarkets in the suburbs. Some department stores like Kmart (yes, we have them but they are not the same company as US Kmarts) will open 8am until 10pm every day in the suburbs with the iconic first-ever Aussie Kmart in Burwood (suburb) open 24/7. The big hardware chain here (Bunnings) opens until the early evening but each store may have different hours. 2/ Driving: STICK TO THE SPEED LIMITS! The traffic camera network here is huge. They have red light cameras, combined red light and speed cameras, speed cameras and point to point (distance~speed over time) cameras (on some freeways). There are even clandestine mobile speed cameras placed in ordinary looking late model cars which park on roadsides to catch drivers out. The tolerance for being overspeed is 3km/h ...that's about the width of your speedometer needle. You have to drive with one eye on your speedometer and one eye on the traffic. The authorities say it is to promote safety BUT we all know it generates a lot of revenue so, really, it is a voluntary tax...speed and you'll pay for it. Most locals are now used to it but visitors can find it hard. Speed limits (and signs) are in km/h, not MPH...so be careful. The lowest speed limit is 30km/h (rare...more often 40) and the highest speed allowed on SOME freeways is 110km/h. Signage is pretty good...some areas have electronically variable signs...keep your eyes peeled. School zones have variable speed limits around them and these are strictly enforced. If you get a ticket don't think you can fly home and ignore it. The traffic office will bill the hire care company and they will take the fine out of your credit card...sadly. 3/ People are friendly to tourists...most people will help you out if you are lost. Service stations will have a traffic map book (called a "Melways" after the publisher's name) that you can have a quick look at. At service stations most are self-serve. You pay after filling your tank except late night where some stations will require you to pay first. Police are friendly...they do NOT have their hands on a pistol when approaching your car (very few handguns here). If you are stopped, stay in your car...they will come to you. They will ask for your licence first. If you have an international permit show it to them WITH your home country licence. If you are a tourist and make a silly mistake you will probably find they will tell you what you've done wrong and let you go on your way. This does not apply to being well over the speed limit or DUI. You can be stopped and breath tested/drug tested at any time without due cause...be aware of that. 4/ Is Melbourne safe to walk around? Daytime...most definitely. Night time as well but keep your wits about you. Like any big city we have our share of criminals. 5/ Can you bargain in the shops? Not in department stores or many smaller stores. In electronics/camera retailers most definitely! Finally...the big thing tourists get wrong (which is mentioned in the video) we drive on the same side of the road as in the UK. Many tourists have been caught out by this. Listen to what the car rental company tells you...they will often give you a leaflet explaining the basic rules. When crossing a street look to the RIGHT, then left then right again before crossing. That's about it...enjoy your stay.
@@seankinnane12 Yes, in terms of sheer population quite true but the spread of suburbia is very similar and Melbourne's city centre is ringed with suburbs spreading out for miles.
I live approximately 95km (59.03 miles) out of Melbourne and I love going up there it truly is a fantastic city and it's definitely a city that people should visit
I can see how Melbourne has been rated the "most livable city". The city looks really cool. When I make it over to Australia, I will need to visit the city for sure! Thanks for the tips!
It is only rated that by one particular group of people who take into account only one thing, which is the comfort of international executives staying them temporarily. It has become so unliveable to any normal resident that many of us have been forced out.
Ignore everything this twat said. Try and find someone that lives in Melbourne on facebook, they will tell you what the best things to do here are. This guy is a moron.
I am very happy about this video. When Americans do videos/content on my city, they often get information wrong or mispronounce place names so badly that it is painful. But your video is a great example of where travel bloggers/vloggers can get it right by spending time in the city, knowing the people and the culture. Thankyou, and I hope you get to travel to Melbourne and Australia a lot more. From Alex, a Victorian.
So another thing to add.... Melbourne is a nanny state with all of its cameras? That's the whole of Australia. Also ketchup and tomato sauce are different, it's to do with the sweetness of the sauce. I feel standard American coffee consists of franchised Starbucks stores so people may not be familiar with coffee shops that actually care more about the quality.
I have lived in Melbourne for more than 50 years and I think your review was fairly accurate and balanced, just like to make a few small additions. Winter 9 months, NO. it starts to get a little cool from mid May and warms up mid September, mid winter 10 deg C is as cold as it gets daytime. Getting around city, you forgot to mention bicycles. Melbourne is bicycle friendly although you are required to wear a helmet. You mentioned water and beer but forgot wine. Victoria has many great wineries less than 2 hr drive from the CBD, and you can buy many excellent quality wines cheaply. And finally, Speedos are called “Budgie smugglers”.
I’m considering taking my postgraduate studies in Melbourne and this was very helpful!!! So informative, interesting, and easy/entertaining to watch. Thank you!!!
1. Also the Water in Melbourne tastes exactly like Canadian water so if you live in Canada you will like Melbournes water 2. get a latte if you like coffee. they are the best and every melbournian buys one if they go to a cafe
Awesome video, your knowledge of Melbourne almost as good as Melbournian. Let me add few more things about Melbourne. Although Melbourne is the second largest city in Australia, but Melbourne hosts all the world events: Australia Open (Tennis), Moto GP and F1 GP. You've got another subscriber.
Melbourne will always be a home for me... Miss Melbourne so much... Will I ever come back home??? I can only dream about it, with all that has happened through my life currently....
I would like to add one more thing about how amazing the public toilet facilities across Melbourne, you can find it in the middle of the city or any suburb you go to. I've been to big cities in the USA and Canada, had lot's of problems finding public toilets there, had to use McDonald's :(
I watched a lot of your clips when I travelled to Vegas and was planning my trip thanks - I am from Melbourne and just happened on your clip on Melbourne so I dropped in to say well done. The Yarra is the river that flows upside down due to its brown colour.
As a Melbournian I would suggest visiting in January, the Australian Open is an amazing way to experience the city. There are so many free events and pop ups. We are known for hosting amazing sports & music events! If you have access to a car you should visit the Mornington Peninsula Hot Springs, Daylesford, Rosebud and Bendigo.
Great review.. I'd say Melbourne generally has decent/warm weather for half the of the year (mid Oct to mid April) and cold weather the other half... It still doesn't get anywhere near as chilly as cities such as London, Chicago or Toronto thou.
To add Queen Vic market is also open nights, generally Wednesdays but many more nights through the summer months, great place to try out all sorts of foods, viet, indian, italian, ukranian, aussie, sweet, savoury and everything in between... But it fills up quick and youll be waiting quite a while for food from 730-9 so make sure to scope it out early if you're hungry to try a few different things. If you enjoy you're drinking you're in luck with melbourne, do the tram bar crawl, start at one end of the city at a bar and have a drink, then get on a tram and make your way down the line :) And you're right about coffee here :) Plenty of cafes and coffee shops in alley ways that have some amazing coffees
Also the trains are behind the camera plus for the freight train enthusiast, there's 4 freight trains that run through Flinders and Spencer street (Spencer Street is called Southern Cross) during the day, it's the Long Island steel to Hastings (Saturday to Thursday (it only runs on Fridays when there's works on the Feankston line during the weekend)), the Maryvale Paper train from Morwell (7 days a week), the Dandenong Cement (odd days) and Apex (Hansons Quarry) (alternates between Westall and Brooklyn to Kilmore East)
Melbourne is Australia's equivalent of Boston, which is funny because they are actually sister cities. In regards to the trams, the other Australian cities had tram networks in the 1950's and decided to get rid of them, but Melbourne kept theirs. Its rather ironic that those cities that took them away now are putting them back.
I grew up living in Melbourne and you have done an excellent job reviewing. I now live in a tacky place called the Gold Coast. If you ever return you should visit.
bravo chris, well done. a well thought out list of tips for any melbourne visitor. good to see a shout out to the micro brewers too, the melbourne micro brewery scene is going crazy. they are producing some amazing world class beers.
I'll be traveling to Melbourne soon and your video answered every question I had about how to prepare for my visit. Thanks!!! Looking forward to watching your other videos!
Wominjeka. Don't come here in June or July. It is miserable. If you don't like extreme heat, stay away in January and February. Best time is late Feb, through to early May. We have kangaroos, platypuses and koalas in the outer suburbs that you can easily reach by public transport so you really don't need a car to see wildlife.
I like it very much this video. I visited Melbourne in 2008 and it's great to see it again thanks to your video. The spot where you're talking is perfect!! The Rialto towers behind you. I loved those towers. So great memories from Australia 🇦🇺💖🥇 thanks for the amazing video 🏆bravo Chris
I lived in Melbourne for 5 years but aside from pronunciation most of this is accurate. The only thing that stood out to me is that most stores in my experience opened at 8am or 9am. Not 10am that would be quite late for a store to open. Everything else seems spot on though.
Victoria (the state the Melbourne is in) also has aldi as another major supermarket :) but coles and woolworths (for short woolies) are our two most known supermarkets :)
It's an amazing video, I hope to start a video series as well. hope this video helps you a lot if you are interested in visiting Melbourne. Good work dude
I live in Sydney and here we call a small glass of beer a midi and a large glass of beer a schooner. I didn’t know Melbourne had a different name that’s interesting:)
for foreigner tourist first time visit Melbourne, u must buy Micky card is useful for public transportation; MRT, Tram to explore every tourist attraction, the best stay in downtown
Winter's not really 9 months long.... It's cold from about May to September so we do get a solid 5 months of winter weather for sure, but by the same token we also get a pretty solid 5 months of summer weather from November to March so it's definitely not as bad as the reputation. It's also a relatively dry city compared to Sydney & Brisbane which have far more rainfall, rain is usually only in short spurts here - wait 10 minutes and it will clear up.
Really enjoyed this video but the trains are down A LOT in Melbourne and are always delayed on weekdays but usually tourists come on weekends so it’s not really a problem for tourists. Also spot on with the weather that’s why we say “4 season 1 day” because it’s raining for 5 minutes and then sunny and warm after. It’s crazy.
Melbourne trains at the moment are a pain in the arse because of the major works they're doing in the CBD and the works to remove train crossings in the outer suburbs which will continue all of 2018. Best tip is to download the metro/metlink app (its free) and gives live updates for all delays and works. Also for travelers most trains going around the CBD and towards any of the south-east outer suburbs will be abserlutely packed to the brim between 6am-8:30am/3pm-7pm :) loved hearing about Melbourne from a tourist perspective!
I agree winter is 9 months long in Melbourne but it is fairly mild and rarely need to wear a coat. I disagree with "it rains a lot in Melbourne". It has rained about 6 times in the last 4 months we are in drought. Multi-billions of dollars has been spent on a desalination plant to ensure the future water supply. Melbourne actually gets less than half the rainfall of Sydney. I don't think Melbourne is a great tourist destination - I think you need to live here to really get to love and appreciate Melbourne. Melbourne gets less than half the tourists of Sydney. Sydney is the face of Australia but Melbourne is the heart and soul.
Rarely need to wear a coat in winter? You're dirty rotten liar tbh. You'll need a coat and a scarf and even gloves for all of winter and at least the one of two months on either side you'll need very warm clothes as well - coat included.
9 months is wrong. It is warm for seven months from October until then end of april. It is only cool/cold forfive months. Even saying to north americans that winter is 5 months is inaccurate. I walked around today (1 july) in my t-shirt in the sun and its was beautiful.
hey . this is my first time watching ur videos , thanks for the information . i like the way u explain things in the videos .. not much people can do .. good job
i feel like i'm visiting california not australia lol, but seriously nice job thanks. no reason to drive in the city and worry about hook turns, but i may take a train out to warrnambool and rent a car there for the twelve apostles great ocean drive and hiking. the other side of the road thing and opposite way roundabouts are a bit of a worry, but i will try not to aggravate people out there lol. the weather tip was especially helpful.
The only con about coming into Melbourne by plane is the only way to get into the city is by taxi, uber or the public shuttle bus Both Sydney and Brisbane have a train direct from the airport into the city but Melbourne i dont know if they ever will build a train network from the airport to the city
I live in Melbourne it’s boring once u do everything but Ye it’s good btw the most important thing is don’t eat chips outside seagulls will snatch them those nasty little buggers everywhere!
At least you guys don’t feed the seagulls for them to come up. Every time I go to the beach (Florida) I see people feeding the seagulls making everyone miserable around them.
Dont know if it has been mentioned but that last picture of a coopers pale ale is actually an Adelaide beer. Considering Adelaide has some pretty rank water (I live there so i can confirm) its probably one of the best mass produced beers in Australia (in my personal opinion) although their sparkling ale is better
Australia has pretty tough immagration laws, but it makes the country safer by not just letting any joe schmo in. If you have no criminal past you should be fine with getting a visa :) especially if you are providing work.
Thank you very much for all the tips. I am so happy to see you did videos. I will be going to Australia in March 2018 and it will be my first visiting in Australia. Wondering if you will doings videos for Sydney and Brisbane also. And yes I am one of your subscriber since you did videos in Singapore.
+Ruby Box Thanks Ruby! On this trip I only went to Melbourne and Adelaide... But I didn't have enough time in Adelaide to do any videos. I've got a few more Melbourne videos coming up though! Glad you found me thru Singapore :)
Adelaide was definitely quaint and quiet :). I liked the city center with the university, river, and shopping streets. I didn't like that all the stores closed at 5pm on Sunday including grocery stores. The airport was good and super close to the city which was nice.
I live in Australia.
I live in the state of Victoria,
I love Melbourne
Some more tips:
When ur in Melbourne in a sunny day. lets go to the city! When u arrive..
1. Rain
2. Clouds
Why am I watching this I’ve lived in the heart of Melbourne my entire life
Yoongi_ Trash ME TOO
I like melbourne city than in L.A. there is no tram, and train and double decker bus
Melbournes changing..
Don't watch it then
me too, I just learned we have a 9 month winter....?

I appreciate that support Wasup Doc! My mispronunciation is definitely not for a lack of trying that's for sure!
I’ve lived in Melbourne all my life and myself and everyone I’ve ever come across pronounces it Mel-ben
We Americans have tons of things to be thankful for. Yet I do say we do pronounce Melbourne like Mel born and or Mel Burn
Did NOT know you pronounce it Mel bin and or Mel ben
Our Aussie impression is from the Aussie Crockdile Dundee, character, good day mate, Shrimp on the Barbee

+Anthony Kernich Melbourne was just forward thinking on keeping those trams!
best decision they ever made
Anthony Kernich I’ve been to Boston once and I live in Melbourne and I find that it’s completely different Melbourne is more like a mini San Francisco
Adelaide has trams.
But nowhere near on the scale of Melbourne and probably never will be considering how much one little line seems to cost.
I grew up living in Melbourne and you have done an excellent job reviewing. I now live in a tacky place called the Gold Coast. If you ever return you should visit.
+captnclam Thanks Captnclam! I didn't make it to the Gold Coast on this trip. Maybe next time!
bravo chris, well done. a well thought out list of tips for any melbourne visitor. good to see a shout out to the micro brewers too, the melbourne micro brewery scene is going crazy. they are producing some amazing world class beers.
+ozzycarnut Thanks Ozzy! Maybe I was thinking too much that the sun ended up getting on me before I was done! :)
I'll be traveling to Melbourne soon and your video answered every question I had about how to prepare for my visit. Thanks!!! Looking forward to watching your other videos!
Thanks ksato!
Wominjeka. Don't come here in June or July. It is miserable. If you don't like extreme heat, stay away in January and February. Best time is late Feb, through to early May. We have kangaroos, platypuses and koalas in the outer suburbs that you can easily reach by public transport so you really don't need a car to see wildlife.
Your video was excellent. I visited Melbourne recently and you were spot on...I wish i saw your video before i travelled. keep em coming :)
Thanks Narayanan!
Thanks santi! Melbourne is a neat city!
Thankyou . very helpful for a tourist like me ...ill be traveling in December...Christmas ❤
Thank-you really helpful information ie. about the public transportation and the free pass in the city.
It is very useful ! Keep it up ;)
I lived in Melbourne for 5 years but aside from pronunciation most of this is accurate. The only thing that stood out to me is that most stores in my experience opened at 8am or 9am. Not 10am that would be quite late for a store to open. Everything else seems spot on though.
Thanks NotCroutons! And thanks for the correction on store opening times
Awesome video! Coffee is a must when visiting Melbourne
Keep up the great job!! I've been looking for a video that accurately describes Melbourne, I'll be going there this March 2019 as Student Visa.
Nice! I hope you enjoy Melbourne Sushi Viking!
Victoria (the state the Melbourne is in) also has aldi as another major supermarket :) but coles and woolworths (for short woolies) are our two most known supermarkets :)
Nice video on Melbourne, I've started to do some videos around my town and came across your channel. Keep up the great work. Cheers Rob
+Finding Paradise Thanks Rob!!!
Finding Paradise please can I be you friend
Spot on, excellent review. I live in Melbourne, and your review is just wow! I'm now keen to see your reviews on other cities in the world. Cheers!
Aww.. thanks Hloe!
Dope Video! Sending blessing your way, Keep inspiring!🎒🙌🏻
I love you Americans and your pronounciation of different things, it's so quirtky and cute :)
It's an amazing video, I hope to start a video series as well. hope this video helps you a lot if you are interested in visiting Melbourne. Good work dude
Thanks AusLense!
Thank you sir... now I know what Melbourne looks like. I'm from Indonesia.
Thanks Mamanya!
I live in Sydney and here we call a small glass of beer a midi and a large glass of beer a schooner. I didn’t know Melbourne had a different name that’s interesting:)
You really deserve a subscribe from everyone 🔥. More success to come your way , keep it up
Thanks Evan!!! :)
Oh thank you I’m From Melbourne and live in Melbourne
Can you explain more about the Melbourne weather? June..July and August is winter..how about February..March..April and May? September and October?
for foreigner tourist first time visit Melbourne, u must buy Micky card is useful for public transportation; MRT, Tram to explore every tourist attraction, the best stay in downtown
You make great simple videos. Thanks for the great work.
Thanks!!!
Excelente video, sos un genio!! Mil gracias por la información! Saludos
Thank you for inspiring tips. See you melbourne on 2021 ;*
Thanks May!
Precise video except the store timings. They close by 6 on a weekday so start wrapping up by 5:30.
Thanks for the correction on store closing times!
As a Melbourner you doing a greet job
Thanks!
It’s crazy.
+TheSepticPizza Thanks Septic Pizza! So avoid the trains! OK! :)
Really helpful tips! Absolutely can't wait to go!
Thanks Jetlag!
i live in Melbourne and you did a wonderful job!!
Seriously awesome video, I'm thinking of going to college here so it was very helpful!
Thanks :)

Can't agree more on your comment!
Rarely need to wear a coat in winter? You're dirty rotten liar tbh. You'll need a coat and a scarf and even gloves for all of winter and at least the one of two months on either side you'll need very warm clothes as well - coat included.
As we saw be prepared for 4 seasons in one day and you cant go wrong in Melbourne
Rain coming to Melbourne near you this August - September!
9 months is wrong. It is warm for seven months from October until then end of april. It is only cool/cold forfive months.
Even saying to north americans that winter is 5 months is inaccurate. I walked around today (1 july) in my t-shirt in the sun and its was beautiful.
hey . this is my first time watching ur videos , thanks for the information . i like the way u explain things in the videos ..
not much people can do .. good job
Thanks Aja!
The aus dollar to the us dollar is now sitting at around 66 cents. We don't have a very good exchange rate at all at the moment
It's basically like the San Fran/Portland of Australia!
In Queensland and New South Wales the beer sizes are midi= small and schooner= large. :)
i feel like i'm visiting california not australia lol, but seriously nice job thanks. no reason to drive in the city and worry about hook turns, but i may take a train out to warrnambool and rent a car there for the twelve apostles great ocean drive and hiking. the other side of the road thing and opposite way roundabouts are a bit of a worry, but i will try not to aggravate people out there lol. the weather tip was especially helpful.
We call "bathers" boardies or board shorts
+Oscar Harvey Thanks for the correction :)
We use both, oscar. Bathers are all swimming clothes, boardies are only the shorts. Boardies are a type of bathers, he was fine.
No i say bathers mate
Thank you for your precious word.
LOVE THIS VLOG! VERY DIRECT AND INFORMATIVE!!!
Thanks pink velvet!
Melbourne is now resturant and coffee capital of the world
Very well done.I stay here and yet learnt a few things here. Thanks a lot
I really love this panda ...
Great video. Really helpful!
Thanks Amy!
I love your presentation,truly helpful
Thanks Mario!
Very informative! YP4L!
Who else is watching this to feel good that they live in melbourne😃
It's a great city!
@@YellowProductions im living here right now 😁
I’m in Melbourne
The only con about coming into Melbourne by plane is the only way to get into the city is by taxi, uber or the public shuttle bus
Both Sydney and Brisbane have a train direct from the airport into the city but Melbourne i dont know if they ever will build a train network from the airport to the city
Thanks! so informative!
I live in Melbourne it’s boring once u do everything but Ye it’s good btw the most important thing is don’t eat chips outside seagulls will snatch them those nasty little buggers everywhere!
Good tip! I hate seagulls eating my food!
At least you guys don’t feed the seagulls for them to come up. Every time I go to the beach (Florida) I see people feeding the seagulls making everyone miserable around them.
Melbourne lovely city is my second home in Aussie, i lived in Vogue apartment in Malcom street South Yarra :-)
15:00 , Coopers is a beer brewed in Adelaide not Melbourne
What a nice compliment good for you
I loved your video!!! Thanks
Thanks Paula!
Very informative video. Thank you
Such a nice guy, love it
Thanks Robin!
I would love to move to Australia for work, from Africa, Kenya how easy can that be?
I like it that life in Australia is more like in Kenya.
Australia has pretty tough immagration laws, but it makes the country safer by not just letting any joe schmo in. If you have no criminal past you should be fine with getting a visa :) especially if you are providing work.
samwela matunda don’t come, they are very racist.
Nice tips for exploring Melbourne
Thanks!
@@YellowProductions :)
In Australia, we drive on the left hand side of the road. Our steering wheel is on the right hand side.
What did you think of Adelaide? I live here and I consider it pretty quaint, compared to the chaos of New York. The airport is good as well.
Adelaide was definitely quaint and quiet :). I liked the city center with the university, river, and shopping streets. I didn't like that all the stores closed at 5pm on Sunday including grocery stores. The airport was good and super close to the city which was nice.
Mel-burn - its pronounced. great review!
It's pronounced that way with an Australian accent. That's not how you pronounce it in American.
