Hey, just to address a few comments: 1) yes I did say "West" when I meant "East" on perhaps more than one occasion. But this line runs EAST from the city. If you plan to ride this line do NOT head West from the start point. 2) Whilst there may be other tram lines (the Belgian coastline one has been mentioned) that may be longer, perhaps I should have specified that this is the longest URBAN line in the world. Apart from those two things this is a flawless video 😂 Thanks for watching, I am grateful for the support, stef 🙏

All I'd say is that you missed out on the Vermont South Shopping Centre which is right along Burwood Hwy and not far from the tram stop. It was very therapeutic, watching the scenery change slowly from suburban to urban to city skayscrapers, and see the unique architecture and localization each suburb had. It was also cool to take it at dawn and watch the sun slowly rise and watch the city slowly wake up. Truly a magical experience, taking this tram
EDIT: in terms of the credit-card rollout, my guess is it will be similar to Opal in Sydney, which is the equivalent of Myki. You CAN tap on using your credit card, but it's cheaper to use the Opal card, especially concession, student or child cards. So if you're doing more than a day trip or once off, it's better to top up your Opal card

For those who want a bit more explanation about the longest tramway in the world, which thus connects several cities, here is a brief explanation:
Ps: sorry if my English is not super. If you see a mistake feel free to say so!
In Belgium, along the entire Belgian coast, there runs 1 single tramline that is 67 kilometres long! That's 41.63 miles. That's considerably bigger when you know that the tramline this video describes is only 25.5885696 kilometres or 15.9 miles long. The Coastal Tram (which used to be tram line 0, and before that was divided into several regional trams) said goodbye to the faithful ACEC BN trams just this year. The new Urbos 100 'Zeelijner' is the new Coastal Tram.
The line runs from De Panne Station, which is 3 kilometres (1.87 miles) from the French border, to Knokke station, which is 6.4 (4 miles) from the Dutch border. The tram runs via Koksijde, Oostduinkerke-Bad, Nieuwpoort, Lombardsijde, Westende-Bad, Middelkerke, Mariakerke, Mariakerke-Bad, Ostende, Bredene, De Haan (De Haan Aan Zee has a beautiful historic tram stop), Wenduine and Blankenberge. (All these towns I wrote according to Dutch).
I personally think the best stretch of this 67 kilometres is between Ostende Koninginnelaan and Middelkerke De Greefplein, as there you have a view of the beautiful North Sea.
Or, as mentioned earlier, I am a big fan of the De Haan Aan Zee stop because of the beautiful station house at the stop, and love the renovated Ostende Station.
The speed limit is a whopping 78 kilometres per hour. Dar is 48.5 miles per hour! The duration of this drive is over 2 hours. With some luck, you will get there in 2 hours and 15 minutes.
For those wishing to come and visit Belgium for this: At all stops where it says '-Bad' or 'Aan Zee' there is a seaside area where swimming is allowed nearby. Indeed, it is life-threatening to go swimming without the supervision of our local lifeguards. The currents of the North Sea are much stronger than you think, and suddenly you have drifted a long way away from the beach.
What is also life-threatening is crossing the tramway without looking. As mentioned earlier, the Coastal Tram goes very fast and dangerous situations and accidents happen daily, and sadly fatally.
The tram (and this applies everywhere in Belgium, I think even in most countries...) always has the right of way, including from the zebra crossings! This is because it has a long braking distance.

It doesn't have a line as long as this 22.8 km-long line, but the Pyongyang system is also impressive! Before the Korean War from 1950 to 1953, there were three tramway systems in the entire Korean Peninsula: one each in Seoul, Busan and Pyongyang. Seoul and Busan got rid of theirs in favor of the automobile, while the original Pyongyang network was bombed during the war, so it was decided to build a new tram network. The new system began operations in 1989. The system has a system length of over 50 km with four lines. Three main lines and a shuttle line.
The three main lines uses Tatra trams and new partially domestically produced ones. The fourth one was created to connect the Pyongyang Metro station at Kim Il-sung University and Pyongyang University of Foreign Studies to the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, the mausoleum of Kim Il-sung and Kim Jong-il. Kwangmyong station on the Hyoksin Line was once at the palace’s site, but once it became a mausoleum in 1995, it became sacred ground and thus it was closed. So a tram line was built to replace the station, with service from Samhung station! Unlike the rest of the network, the tram that runs on this Kumsusan line uses a Zurich tram built in the late 40s that was retired in 1994 where it was purchased by us the next year.

I believe the record that Stef is referring to is for streetcars where the tram tracks need to be shared with a road taking vehicular traffic. The Belgium Coastal Tramway runs adjacent to the road, so it's not a "streetcar" per se which is what the Guiness World Record requires. That said, Route 75 does have a fairly long section along the Burwood Highway where it runs on tracks that go down the middle of the median strip with complete separation from vehicular traffic, so it probably shouldn't count either.

    • @sween64

you're technically right: "At 67 kilometres (42 mi) in length, the Belgian Kusttram is currently the world's longest metre gauge tram line in service, as well as one of the few interurban tramways in the world to remain in operation." I think it's because it's a metre gauge tram line there's speculation to its definition as a tram/streetcar and other things. Otherwise, it is technically the longest tram line in the world. Route 75 is the longest in the Southern Hemisphere, at least.

Hello from Canada. I lived in Toronto and I can tell you that the TTC Streetcar route 501 is 24.5 km if you take it end to end. About 90 min travel time without stopping.

And Stef, in reply to your pinned comment, the 501 Queen streetcar is VERY urban. It runs right through downtown Toronto, stretching east and west across the city.

The Vermont South Shopping Centre is adjacent to the tram terminus and bus interchange. It is very popular with older local residents.
The Los Angeles A Line runs 48.5 miles (78.1 km) between Azusa and Downtown Long Beach, with 44 stations. It is claimed to be the longest light rail line in the world. Route 5 in Halle (Germany) is very long too.

It's stuff like this that makes you realise how sprawling Melbourne is - you were only about halfway out to the East of what constitutes metropolitan Melbourne. About 37km east from the CBD as the crow flies, or about 45km by road will get you to the eastern edge of Melbourne.

I used to use this line to almost the end sometimes since my parents lived near Vermont South! I never knew it was the world's longest tram route until this video. The route originally finished in Burwood, where the 24/7 Kmart is, but it got extended in the late 2000s. As others have said, there are/were plans to extend it to Knox City. The buses at the end of the line will take you there, tho.
And that Macca's is pretty good as far as Macca's goes haha.

I have to say I haven’t heard that pronunciation of “Vermont” with the emphasis on “MONT” instead of “VER” in nearly 40 years. I have never travelled on the tram to the city but a friend and her husband from Vermont South did … once … The tram route was to end at Knox City Shopping Centre but I believe cost blow outs saw it end at Vermont South. It is used heavily by students from the outer Eastern suburbs travelling to schools including Deakin University along the route towards the city.

Well what do you know? I used to live in Vermont South near the terminal. Used to be so boring catching that slow tram into work in the city. Took an hour for the 18km ride. Little did I know I was on the longest tram line in the world. But I can believe it. Thanks for info. Cheers. 🍺

    Some points of interest:
    1. The 75 route is the longest urban tramway in the world because it was 'through-routed' or linked to the Docklands route. The 75 used to terminate in the City at Spencer St, so it is effectively two routes joined together. Same goes for the second-longest Bundoora line.
    2. The Gold Coast extension due to open next year will be 26km long (currently it is 20km long - with no 'through-linking'!), so route 75 won't be the longest for long! (Maybe Melbourne could cheat and regain the title by looping through route 75 with route 86 to Bundoora!).
    3. The longest tram line in Australia closed many years ago - it ran from Newcastle to West Wallsend and was 25km long. But again, from next year the 26km Gold Coast line will hold that title.
    4. There are serious plans to extend the Goldie line south to the border - that will be 39km if it happens, and it's looking very likely it will happen, but who knows, it may not happen.

Not trams but Melbourne public transport - my car broke down at 3am on the opposite side of Melbourne to were I live and I had to take trains at a random time and place to get home. It worked brilliantly, ten minutes walk to a modern deserted station, trains on time, warm clean and safe with security officers in groups at some stops. At the end 5 minutes walk home by 6am. All for $5. Much much better than the neglected unsafe system I remember from 30 years before.

Love visiting Melbourne for the trams, they are the best especially with the running of the old heritage W's for the tourists.
The other thing I really like, is the regional rail, I reckon you could get almost anywhere by train or tram in Victoria.

Tram museum in Hawthorn was originally a tram depot, and was later used for training drivers and conductors.
For a long time route 75 terminated at Warrigal Road before it was extended east. Most of the extension has the tram line in its own reservation in the middle of the road. The line was first extended to Middleborough Road before being extended to its current terminus at Blackburn Road. The tram line goes past Deakin University.

Another long tram route is the Route 86 to Bundoora. There is a great Baker's Delight at Vermont South. Lovely stuff there. They eventually hope to extend to Knox City some day in the future. Then it will be even longer.

3 other places you should have hopped off and had a look around. Bridge Rd Richmond, though it isn't as good as our used to be, but still a few nice pubs and places to eat. The shops just before Warragul Rd. Not sure if that's considered Camberwell or Burwood, but they're ok and lastly, Australia's first kmart in Bureood East which is right near my house!
But I get it as you don't know the area. Thanks for taking the trip out here!

I live on this route, but I go a lil further by taking the Knox Transit link, which was created after the line didn't get extended to Knox City.
If you wanna go west, you can go west from Vermont South to Docklands! 😄 I went down the Vermont South direction several times, but the only time I went up the Docklands direction is when I went exploring at the Central Pier stop. Still yet to go to Waterfront stop, but it's on different lines.

As soon as you said longest tram line I knew it had to be the 75. I used to take it from Vermont south back in the day to uni, to Camberwell Junction and sometimes the city.
Right by the end of the line is a great casual Indian restaurant called Rich Mahal that I highly recommend, there's a small mall with some great delis too.
