next time someone in the US says that trains/trams/buses/bikes can't take over the streets show them this video, I also love how cars are shoved to the side
Nice video! Love the Melbourne transit system but especially the trams! Amazing that there is just so much technology and variation in the trains and trams of Melbourne.
greetings from vienna. we have a similar sized tram network (not sure if it is the fourth or fifth largest in the world). and yes, it is a lot of maintenance and sand usage is a thing.
I love Melbourne trams, not now I’m in a wheel chair as there are not many trams I can get on sadly. Also the trams need more priority over cars by removing the cars of the track area. This would get more people on the trams and reduce the carbon footprint.❤
Our heavy rail network operator, Metro Trains also did a trial painting the rails white. I don't think they do it anymore so not sure how it turned out.
@@thinklist if you search Metro Trains Melbourne Solacoat there's a few references to it being trialled and photos from other enthusiasts, but nothing to say how it actually went.
I was given a job at a military base in Australia to paint the inside of all the fire hose cabinets white. By painting them white it keeps the spiders away. True. Red back spiders cleared off and were never a problem since then.
Just stumbled upon this channel and wow, what energy David has! Very entertaining and and informative which comes from someone that rarely comments on any RUclips-videos, I like the non super-fast pace which makes it understandable for a non native , surprised you don't have over a mil subs - Keep it up!
But why don't you outfit blowers to the back of the tram to blow away that sand you left on the track? Like left it running after the automatic sander unit operates?
Whilst it is true that sand is automatically dispensed when a slip is detected, by that point it is too late for the sand to take maximum effect. The whole point of using sand is to prevent a slip from occurring in the first place. The effectiveness of sand is dependent on the tram being driven in accordance with prevailing track conditions and the driver's awareness and action in dispensing sand by manual activation and also by ensuring the sand flow is not impeded by blocked pipes which happens when the pipes are not routinely checked as often as prior to departure from the terminus on each run during inclement weather.
We've got plenty of trams in the place I live (not in Australia), and some of them are pretty fast, but I've never noticed them dropping sand. Maybe they've got some emergency mechanism that does this, but so infrequently that I never noticed. Either way, why do Melbourne trams need to use so much of the stuff?
I'm guessing it's mainly because there are a lot of trams in the fleet. like, right now there's 493 of them, and in 2025 they're gonna add another 100 next-generation trams to the fleet. so that many trams means a lot of sand
Hey Dave! Remember me? (From about six years ago). I’ve been following your content and really enjoying it! We’re using Kallipr’s Captis loggers over here to monitor large water meters.
This vid got recommended and it's freaking me out, in this one you're right by my house in StK, next video I click you reference Wilson Transformers where I spent 20 odd years turning right to get to the shops...... It's one big game of "I KNOW THAT PLACE".
Came from your shorts but liking the longer format vidoes. You're obviously 100% wrong about the British plug but I can forgive you for that. Not everyone is perfect.
G'day mate. After watching your videos I always feel a little sad that my end game retirement goal of bringing lots of money to Oz so I can leave my craphole of a country forever. I had the pleasure of spending a 3 and a 7 month stint on a working holiday visa back in 1999. The only thing that put me off a little until this week was the slightly authoritarian police force, but after watching 8 U.K police officers drag a 16 year old autistic kid out of her own home for using the word "lesbian" i'm now convinced that both our police forces are taking lessons from the same place.
the newer E-class trams and the upcoming G-class ones do have more wheels, unlike the older ones. problem is that the older ones make up a huge portion of the fleet, so removing them would cause big issues all over the network. they're hoping to phase out the Z-class and A-class trams with the 100 G-class trams they've ordered to be delivered by 2025, and the E-class ones have allowed for quite a few older ones to be retired, but not enough
Electric busses have much lower capacity than trams (our current trams coming in over the last ten years have capacity for 210 people). Rubber on asphalt (busses) is also much less efficient than steel on steel (trams). There’s a reason Melbourne has kept its tram network! We have way too many people using the tram network and busses couldn’t cater to the same number of people
@@Sagealeena I agree, but comparing a single bus (that seats 50 people and also has lots of standing room) to a multi-car tram of indeterminate length is not quite a fair comparison. Actually, my comment was intended to point out to other people that focusing on a solution to a single problem without considering other factors tends to lead into trouble. For example, if the problem is airplanes that crash and that is the ONLY thing that is to be considered, then building taxiways to connect every airport in the country would solve it. Of course, that's a ridiculously extreme example but I think it highlights the fallacy of treating any single problem in a vacuum. Everything in the real world is a compromise...there is no such thing as a 'perfect solution'.
maybe they'll do that on the upcoming G-class trams, but it's also possible that they just straight-up won't need it. also, retrofitting the older trams with that kind of mechanism, especially with just how many trams there are in the fleet, would be difficult and would take a long time
People joke about it but they’re honestly okay if you’re careful. I’ve had quite a few run ins with white tails but never been injured. You just need to plan to make it to the hospital quickly
@@Sagealeena if you stay in a city or in areas around a city it probably won't matter anyway. it's only when you get out into more rural areas that you encounter dangerous spiders

Very true 🧐

Yes they do.
"I don't like sand, it's coarse, rough, and irritating, and I have to poop it out all the time!"
-Tramakin Railwalker
I know right
Some of the older trams used to have a plastic window showing the amount of sand remaining, viewable from inside the tram.
Newer trams still do, they’re just hidden under seats and other spots
I don't know if this is true or not but I did hear the same things will be done on the G:Link (also operated by the same group as Yarra trams)
Mmm not sure 🤔

It's one big game of "I KNOW THAT PLACE".
At its basic, Tram is a train. So the problems that a train faces, is also faced by trams. Sooo yeah. Sand is both a problem and a measure
I’m watching this on a tram in my home town, Melbourne.
The US tried heat resistant paint a few years ago it didn't help.

This explains why I always see sand on the rails
Its exactly the same as a bilge sensor on a ship
This gives me advert or kids live action field education show vibes
