Thank you guys! That was the idea -- it became less and less about the greenbirb and more and more about just not giving up. While it'll be nice to have a little deviation in my streaming schedule (since I need to get ready for a Pokemon Regional at the end of December!), I think I'll miss the excitement of hanging in there against the odds.
Hang in there! We actually had a lot of people graduate from the "Pokemon School of Soft Resets" while I was streaming. A lot of people got it ridiculously faster than me, but I acknowledged that as proof that the end-goal did exist, not as a reason to give up.

I dropped out of High School last year (psychological reasons), and I felt really hopeless. But your speech really made me feel better, and have a better view on the future. Pharaohmone Rowlet! I literally had a dream that I started Pokemon Sun with a Shiny Rowlet months before the game's release, and it's colors were almost identical to its real shiny colors! Coincidence or not, I've been determined to make this literal dream a reality. It may sound kinda crazy, but I'm gonna keep trying.
MelodiousBlitz No! See, that's exactly what Shiny Hunting is about. Setting a goal for yourself beyond the normal rules of the game and then working for it. It's just like all those crazy Nuzlockes that you see - nobody made them delete their knocked out Pokemon, it's just an additional challenge they put forward to make the game more fun!

I've been trying for a shiny rowlet for a while now... But I will not give up! After so many hours of shiny hunting, it will be worth it and the rowlet will mean so much more to me. And I'm planning on naming it Yondu (Guardians of the Galaxy)

85 hours into it, it became less and less about a green owl and more about maintaining a positive attitude through thick and thin. 🙌🏻 Glad to hear that you feel uplifted!
And that's a great way to do it if you're just after the green owl, not the experience of "surviving" that cutscene a million times. XD The odds are much better if you get to breeding.
There's never a guarantee, but back in the old days folks used to soft reset under much worse odds (The original Shiny Odds prior to Generation VI were double what they are now!) Just know that it's doable, and within reach - as long as you hang in there!

I think you will soon. When I got into 1X00's, I felt better because that was about the range I usually finally get full odds Shiny Pokemon. While you're never guaranteed one, eventually Arceus gives you a break.
Correct -- It doesn't change the chances. It's "true random" every time, so the chances wouldn't be any different if your changed to a new 3DS each time you reset the game. The number is to keep track of how many times I've personally done it, that's all!
You have some next-level patience to SR Rowlet. I MM'd one for my friend and it only took a few hours, but that's the easy way out lol. Congratulations on finally getting it though.
Thank you! There's nothing wrong or "dirty" about breeding it. It's just a different experience. Plus you can actually tailor design your Pokémon if you take the time to breed it with items like the Destiny Knot and Everstone.

Pharaohmone I love all the shiny starters. TBH I like Litten's shiny the best and Popplio the least. But as Pokemon, I like Rowlet the best and Popplio the least... NO LOVE FOR POPPLIO!!! ;(
When you Soft Reset for a Shiny Starter - each attempt is true random, meaning you do not have an increased chance of getting the Shiny because you reset the game once, twice, 1,000 times or more! You could take a ten year break, buy a new copy of the game, put it in a new DS that was never opened, and your chance of a Shiny would be just the same as if you kept going by shutting it off. There are methods which require you to keep playing, like the SoS Chains in Sun & Moon, but that doesn't apply to Starters or other Pokémon you hunt by resetting. That means you control your hunting schedule ~ ! Best of luck getting what you're looking for!

You don't have to leave it on. It's true random everytime! That also means that even after 4096 soft resets, there's no guarantee you'll get Rowlet. You just have to hang in there until it happens.
I've been resetting since game released and every time I think of stopping I think of my promise I made for this reset and I think of this video. It's been a long long... journey.

it has been nearly two years since i got the game and i have not actually played the game yet because i wanted to play it with a shiny starter. I have reseted for nearly two years, even though i have not hunted all the time for it i have finally gotten the pokemon and i can now play the game for the first time. It is a really rewarding shiny and it is also my favourite shiny of all time, so congratulations even though this was three years ago
I have a question: I want a shiny starter, but I also would like to play another game or rest. If I come out of the game, do I have to count the Soft Reset all over again?
Yeah - The basic concept of soft resetting is that you reset the game before you save any progress past the point of getting your starting Pokémon. If you save your progress beyond this scene, then you don't get another chance to get a Shiny Starter. I had two copies of the game, Sun for Shiny Hunting (as depicted in the video) and Moon for competitive breeding (as depicted in some of my recent tournament related videos.)

Goooood luck! On a serious note -- what's great about Pokemon though is that once you find it, everyone gets to about the same place after a few months. Your start time may be delayed, but you'll catch up to other trainers in no time, so just hang in there!
I turned it off many, many times between streams. This was filmed over 85 hours, on and off during 9 days. The Soft Reset process is true random, and it's just a lottery as to whether the shiny value of the Pokémon matches your trainer number. You could take a 10 year break or a 10 minute break, and the odds never increase. You just have to hope for Arceus to bless you in his shiny light.
This was a solid week of doing it during all spare free time, including weekends on either side of the work week. Total hour count was 85 hours! Good luck ~ !

It's true random, so don't feel like you missed out on something if you take a break and come back to it. It's a wonderful feeling, but you're allowed to live your life in between!
I'm still hunting at 1200 ish for shiny rowlet, will power about to give out but your words are keeping me strong! Not sure if I'll ever sr for a starter again though, this is painful aha
Remember: This is the longest a hunt will ever be for you. There are no more soft reset hunts in this game that have scenes this long, except maybe soft resetting for a favorable nature on your legendary Pokemon. The odds of getting that are way better - so just survive this and you're free!
Nope! With some luck, you too can soft reset your way into a Shiny starter Pokemon on Sun, Moon, Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire, etc. In Sun & Moon, the legendaries ARE locked, so don't reset yourself until your blue in the face, 'cause that one will never happen. :(
Grats on the Shiny Rowlet man...I, like others, are looking for this little beauty...Rowlet honestly has the best look as a shiny in his final form...For everyone else...happy hunting in 2017.
I am a huge fan of shiny Decidueye versus his final form counterparts, Incineroar and Primarina. I mean, they have their appeal, but I knew which one I was die-hard going to soft reset! Happy hunting this year!
I made it! I've been cosplaying for a while now, and whenever I find a design I like (like Alola Trainer Sun or the new Ash Ketchum) I get rolling! The hat was about $20 in materials, between paint, custom embroidery and a black snap-back that I build on top of.
I wish I was that lucky. I don't count my SR's but I've been at it for over 20 hours total time just spent SR'ing.I write down when I start and when I pause every time and at the end of the day calculate how much time I spent on that day
D3monPixel That's not a bad way to keep track, as each reset technically doesn't have an impact on the next. The 3DS also keeps track of how many hours you've put into a game, so you can compare your written log to its digital ledger. Good luck!
Hey I am trying to catch a shiney Rowlet starter pokemon and Iv been at it for 8 days. Been hunting almost all day every day. Did you ever turn off your 3ds? I have done this and Im afraid it reset all. but on the internett they say thata its no chaining when you soft reset. Is it ok that i hard reset or did that ruin my chances? Hey Kaz'! Turning off your 3DS has no impact on whether or not you will obtain your Shiny Rowlet, positive or negative. Each soft reset is a truly random roll of a die with 4096 sides. There's not even a real guarantee you will ever get it, based on that probability! You can use the in-game reset command, you can turn off your 3DS, you can buy a new copy of the game each time you start it, and none of these methods will improve or detract your chances of getting a Shiny Pokémon. That depends on why you want the Shiny Pokemon. If you just want to have something that's the wrong color, there are easier ways to get it over with. If you want to prove to yourself that you are way more patient than you know, then it's time to hold down L + R + Start once again!

I ended up getting the shiny charm for Omega Ruby, and I must say -- it's not a free pass. It still takes quite a while to produce things via soft reset even though the odds are 4x better than they were without it. Good luck!
Masuda Method breeding certainly has better odds, but it can still take a long time. I had a Fennekin that took 577 eggs WITH the Shiny Charm. Hang in there! Expect it to be faster, but hang in there until it does happen.
this is a live encounter bro, reaction is mostly seen as off screen haha. i have been going for a rowlet for a while now, the srs are painfully slow but worth it :)
Very live! As for your continued journey, I find tapping on the screen with it set on a fixed surface is easier than mashing the A button. Hope it helps!
It does take a while, but there are little tips and tricks you can implement to have a smoother ride. Try tapping on the screen instead of mashing the A or B button. When you stop hearing the beeps, that means you've gotten to the Pokemon selection screen! You just need to set it on a flat surface, and you can even use your fingers, rather than the stylus. Good luck!
No, the only thing you have to do is hold L + R + Start/Select! The software resets the game, but doesn't change any power or sleep settings on your 3DS.

No, no! Each time you reset the game is totally independent from the next. You could try for a Shiny Starter, turn the game off, buy a new 3DS and game, and start over from there. It's completely random each time, and what you do with your 3DS in your down time doesn't change the odds of the starter appearing (1/4096.)
Oh cool! Was it "playable"? This Rowlet was Brave, which can be worked with, but with the advent of Hyper Training any Pokemon with a decent nature can see some quality time in the battle circuit!

Aw, thank you! Yeah, this was exactly the point. Road bumps are not the end of your journey, but if you want to succeed despite them, you have to put in the work until you've come through. Figure out what it is you want to do, and then start chipping away at it. Just like the Soft Reset struggle, it's not going to go away, or magically happen, unless you work at it.

Thank you! You just gotta' hang in there. A -lot- of people got theirs before me, and all sorts of emotions and justifications can run through your head. The best plan is to just remind yourself you're doing this as a challenge in delayed gratification, because there are easier ways to do this. Keep tapping that screen! ... No seriously, set the 3DS on a blank surface and tap the screen until you stop hearing clicks, and that's the checkpoint where you have to press A to choose a Pokemon.
I just get frustrated sometimes since all of my friends have played through the entire game already, and I'm still stuck at the starters. :p I won't give up though!! People keep telling me to just breed or they're offering to give one to me themselves, but it just doesn't feel the same. This is my first SR adventure when it comes to starters and I've already put so much time into it; no sense in quitting now!!
Krissi2917 Once you get this, the advantage your peers have will dissipate pretty fast. You've played Pokémon before, so you know it's a short game where you have to come up with your own adventures once you beat the main scenario. You'll catch up to them in no time, but you'll also have this wonderful memory in your scrapbook too!

Pharaohmone Rowlet! I literally had a dream that I started Pokemon Sun with a Shiny Rowlet months before the game's release, and it's colors were almost identical to its real shiny colors! Coincidence or not, I've been determined to make this literal dream a reality. It may sound kinda crazy, but I'm gonna keep trying.
MelodiousBlitz No! See, that's exactly what Shiny Hunting is about. Setting a goal for yourself beyond the normal rules of the game and then working for it. It's just like all those crazy Nuzlockes that you see - nobody made them delete their knocked out Pokemon, it's just an additional challenge they put forward to make the game more fun!

Wooooow I watched your streams when you started SRing for shiny Rowlet and when you were over 1000 attempt I thought you would give up but you didn't and it paid off! Congrats on that determination ;P I personally gave up after 500.

I got a shiny Rowlet today from the Masuda method, after only 76 hatches!
Soft resets are more about the marathon than just getting the Pokémon, but at the same time - 76 is REALLY fast for the Masuda Method, too! Great job!

And that's a great way to do it if you're just after the green owl, not the experience of "surviving" that cutscene a million times. XD The odds are much better if you get to breeding.

There's never a guarantee, but back in the old days folks used to soft reset under much worse odds (The original Shiny Odds prior to Generation VI were double what they are now!) Just know that it's doable, and within reach - as long as you hang in there!

I think you will soon. When I got into 1X00's, I felt better because that was about the range I usually finally get full odds Shiny Pokemon. While you're never guaranteed one, eventually Arceus gives you a break.

Correct -- It doesn't change the chances. It's "true random" every time, so the chances wouldn't be any different if your changed to a new 3DS each time you reset the game. The number is to keep track of how many times I've personally done it, that's all!

Thank you! There's nothing wrong or "dirty" about breeding it. It's just a different experience. Plus you can actually tailor design your Pokémon if you take the time to breed it with items like the Destiny Knot and Everstone.

Pharaohmone I love all the shiny starters. TBH I like Litten's shiny the best and Popplio the least. But as Pokemon, I like Rowlet the best and Popplio the least... NO LOVE FOR POPPLIO!!! ;(
Popplio is extremely divisive among fans. You either love it or hate it, kinda' like Incineroar! XD

Hang in there! It took me a week, but others an hour, so it's random! The only determining factor is you and your patience.
When I close my game do I power it off or do I just shut it. Can i play a different game on my ds?
When you Soft Reset for a Shiny Starter - each attempt is true random, meaning you do not have an increased chance of getting the Shiny because you reset the game once, twice, 1,000 times or more! You could take a ten year break, buy a new copy of the game, put it in a new DS that was never opened, and your chance of a Shiny would be just the same as if you kept going by shutting it off.
There are methods which require you to keep playing, like the SoS Chains in Sun & Moon, but that doesn't apply to Starters or other Pokémon you hunt by resetting. That means you control your hunting schedule ~ ! Best of luck getting what you're looking for!

You don't have to leave it on. It's true random everytime! That also means that even after 4096 soft resets, there's no guarantee you'll get Rowlet. You just have to hang in there until it happens.

it has been nearly two years since i got the game and i have not actually played the game yet because i wanted to play it with a shiny starter. I have reseted for nearly two years, even though i have not hunted all the time for it i have finally gotten the pokemon and i can now play the game for the first time. It is a really rewarding shiny and it is also my favourite shiny of all time, so congratulations even though this was three years ago

Yeah - The basic concept of soft resetting is that you reset the game before you save any progress past the point of getting your starting Pokémon. If you save your progress beyond this scene, then you don't get another chance to get a Shiny Starter. I had two copies of the game, Sun for Shiny Hunting (as depicted in the video) and Moon for competitive breeding (as depicted in some of my recent tournament related videos.)

Goooood luck! On a serious note -- what's great about Pokemon though is that once you find it, everyone gets to about the same place after a few months. Your start time may be delayed, but you'll catch up to other trainers in no time, so just hang in there!

I turned it off many, many times between streams. This was filmed over 85 hours, on and off during 9 days. The Soft Reset process is true random, and it's just a lottery as to whether the shiny value of the Pokémon matches your trainer number. You could take a 10 year break or a 10 minute break, and the odds never increase. You just have to hope for Arceus to bless you in his shiny light.

It's true random, so don't feel like you missed out on something if you take a break and come back to it. It's a wonderful feeling, but you're allowed to live your life in between!

Remember: This is the longest a hunt will ever be for you. There are no more soft reset hunts in this game that have scenes this long, except maybe soft resetting for a favorable nature on your legendary Pokemon. The odds of getting that are way better - so just survive this and you're free!

Nope! With some luck, you too can soft reset your way into a Shiny starter Pokemon on Sun, Moon, Omega Ruby, Alpha Sapphire, etc. In Sun & Moon, the legendaries ARE locked, so don't reset yourself until your blue in the face, 'cause that one will never happen. :(

I am a huge fan of shiny Decidueye versus his final form counterparts, Incineroar and Primarina. I mean, they have their appeal, but I knew which one I was die-hard going to soft reset! Happy hunting this year!

I made it! I've been cosplaying for a while now, and whenever I find a design I like (like Alola Trainer Sun or the new Ash Ketchum) I get rolling! The hat was about $20 in materials, between paint, custom embroidery and a black snap-back that I build on top of.

I wish I was that lucky. I don't count my SR's but I've been at it for over 20 hours total time just spent SR'ing.I write down when I start and when I pause every time and at the end of the day calculate how much time I spent on that day
D3monPixel That's not a bad way to keep track, as each reset technically doesn't have an impact on the next. The 3DS also keeps track of how many hours you've put into a game, so you can compare your written log to its digital ledger. Good luck!

Hey I am trying to catch a shiney Rowlet starter pokemon and Iv been at it for 8 days. Been hunting almost all day every day. Did you ever turn off your 3ds? I have done this and Im afraid it reset all. but on the internett they say thata its no chaining when you soft reset. Is it ok that i hard reset or did that ruin my chances? Hey Kaz'! Turning off your 3DS has no impact on whether or not you will obtain your Shiny Rowlet, positive or negative. Each soft reset is a truly random roll of a die with 4096 sides. There's not even a real guarantee you will ever get it, based on that probability! You can use the in-game reset command, you can turn off your 3DS, you can buy a new copy of the game each time you start it, and none of these methods will improve or detract your chances of getting a Shiny Pokémon. Good luck ~ !

That depends on why you want the Shiny Pokemon. If you just want to have something that's the wrong color, there are easier ways to get it over with. If you want to prove to yourself that you are way more patient than you know, then it's time to hold down L + R + Start once again!

I got a shiny Rowlet after 3 soft resets. Later on in the game , I put in 2 pikepeks and got popplio and litten off wonder trade after 4 trades

I have the shiny charm and Im 1,300 soft resets into wimpod and Im so used to getting shinies before 1,000 omfg 😭😭
I ended up getting the shiny charm for Omega Ruby, and I must say -- it's not a free pass. It still takes quite a while to produce things via soft reset even though the odds are 4x better than they were without it. Good luck!
this gave me hope to continue trying to get a shiny cutiefly by masuda. I'm at 172 eggs so far though.
Masuda Method breeding certainly has better odds, but it can still take a long time. I had a Fennekin that took 577 eggs WITH the Shiny Charm. Hang in there! Expect it to be faster, but hang in there until it does happen.

It does take a while, but there are little tips and tricks you can implement to have a smoother ride. Try tapping on the screen instead of mashing the A or B button. When you stop hearing the beeps, that means you've gotten to the Pokemon selection screen! You just need to set it on a flat surface, and you can even use your fingers, rather than the stylus. Good luck!

No, the only thing you have to do is hold L + R + Start/Select! The software resets the game, but doesn't change any power or sleep settings on your 3DS.

No, no! Each time you reset the game is totally independent from the next. You could try for a Shiny Starter, turn the game off, buy a new 3DS and game, and start over from there. It's completely random each time, and what you do with your 3DS in your down time doesn't change the odds of the starter appearing (1/4096.)

Oh cool! Was it "playable"? This Rowlet was Brave, which can be worked with, but with the advent of Hyper Training any Pokemon with a decent nature can see some quality time in the battle circuit!

Week 3 , ~6K in SRs ( Or at least close to it ) .... For a shiny Popplio. I'm searching / climbing this mountain for it, hopefully I find it soon.
Waiting at the top of the mountain is your throne. 6,000 is incredible! I had only heard of people at the 3,000/4,000 mark so far.

I know this has nothing to do with Shiny Rowlet (Which, congrats by the way), but with your speech...it made me feel a little hopeful with my future, as I had to drop out of High School because I was suffering and no one was helping me.

Aw, thank you! Yeah, this was exactly the point. Road bumps are not the end of your journey, but if you want to succeed despite them, you have to put in the work until you've come through. Figure out what it is you want to do, and then start chipping away at it. Just like the Soft Reset struggle, it's not going to go away, or magically happen, unless you work at it.
I have just gotten my shiny Rowlet. Took 75 hours over 9 days. It is possible.

Thank you! You just gotta' hang in there. A -lot- of people got theirs before me, and all sorts of emotions and justifications can run through your head. The best plan is to just remind yourself you're doing this as a challenge in delayed gratification, because there are easier ways to do this. Keep tapping that screen!
... No seriously, set the 3DS on a blank surface and tap the screen until you stop hearing clicks, and that's the checkpoint where you have to press A to choose a Pokemon.
I just get frustrated sometimes since all of my friends have played through the entire game already, and I'm still stuck at the starters. :p
I won't give up though!! People keep telling me to just breed or they're offering to give one to me themselves, but it just doesn't feel the same. This is my first SR adventure when it comes to starters and I've already put so much time into it; no sense in quitting now!!
Krissi2917 Once you get this, the advantage your peers have will dissipate pretty fast. You've played Pokémon before, so you know it's a short game where you have to come up with your own adventures once you beat the main scenario. You'll catch up to them in no time, but you'll also have this wonderful memory in your scrapbook too!
