It was the way it was when I was a lad. Pure talented musicianship from all. Beatles, though Martin used a bit of fancy stuff, were just using their own talent. They and other great artists proved that you need natural talent to convince people of your craft. It was just beautiful raw music. That's all I ever had...a basic acoustic going through a mic, with tad of reverb, not too much, and a bit tad of reverb on my vocals. That's all we had...just the basics. These top artists made total magic out of the basics to begin with. Astrud was no different. Beautiful raw talent.

You can tune a piano after her and at the same time she invented a new way to sing as if there was no art at all. So humble and so stellar. The true human shines through like no one else. Maybe Chet Baker. And then the beauty on top.
After her singing, no one should talk ever. Just let her in. Let her stay.
When she had been that young, she must not have explored all facets of her voice but was already perfect.
I hope she reads how much we all still love her. May she enjoy life as long as she wants. She’s immortal anyway.

You can't pour fine wine from an empty bottle. Astrud has such richness
and earnest warmth..she need not sing, she just parts her lips demurely

Her vocal control is amazing. That limpid vibratoless sustain, such a difficult and exposed approach, just astounding how effortlessl and casual she makes it look, even as she is clearly a supported and deeply technical singer. Not the only one who ever put all these pieces together, but surely a pioneer, and one of the greats.

All of her innocence to cameras, audiences and TV's inherent "chilling" effect comes out in her eyes, and their almost lost appearance. Dom Um Romao's major introduction came with his performance with Sinatra & Jobim. He was one of the smoothest Brazilian drummers I am aware of. This is so wonderful, thank you.
All well practiced and performed by the diva de bossa nova!

I saw Astrud live at S.O.B.'s in downtown Manhattan many years ago. It was a thrill seeing her, though it wasn't her best night: the club was so packed that the noise from the tables bothered her.
This long clip shows a quality she always had: that she'd just been pressed into singing out of the blue, that she'd come up to the microphone from the audience without ever having sung in public before, and that she was a bit nervous with all the attention on her. But over and over she won hearts.

Never knew she was in my country, I was 16 then. Saw that pianist Pim Jacobs' trio for free, and many other well known Dutch jazz artists (Louis van Dijk I remember). Sunday afternoons in a house bordering on the Vondelpark, Amsterdam. The very social government and progressives of my city had decided it would be a good way to keep us kids off the streets and out of making trouble. So every Sunday they paid for the best Dutch jazz artist to play in a big room of that house, where maybe 50 of us kids enjoyed great music. If Astrud sang there I didn't know it, but it wouldn't have surprised me.... I did not go to all of them. But those sure were the days...
Later I loved her album with Stan Getz. (Who I later '74 I saw in a tiny jazz club in San Francisco, another big room, $7,50 entrance. Top US jazz artists, heard many there, Sonny Rollins, Max Roach, Art Blakey... don't remember the others.)

An intimate setting..... accomplished musicians... have to step back..... because Astrud takes over the performance. Her presence and her unique voice... gentle, sensual and pure, takes over any learned technique from lessons in a classroom... IT IS ASTRUD!!! Her voice , presence and composure innocently.... dominates. This is not 1962..... more like 67.... when Astrud is happy. Look at other live performances.... she is not shy here... happy in song.... Astrud.. email me asap.... I know you!

This covers a lot of the repertoire from the "Getz Au Go Go" album, an album I played a lot from my parent's record collection. Because of that album, Stan Getz was a major influence on me musically in junior high school and high school. "Only Trust Your Heart" by Sammy Cahn and Benny Carter is an incredible tune.

This is fantastic. I'm a lifelong Astrud fan and didn't even know this footage existed. It's so beautifully raw. Astrud's crooning is great, even when she sings slightly flat. Thank you for posting this video.

Wow! It is so rare to see and hear Astrud sing some of her greatest songs in one video. Thank you for posting this. To see how cool and easy it is for her to sing these songs is so amazing. No fancy dancing or movement. Just glancing from side to side with the occasional smile brings a great impact on the viewer. Astrud Gilberto and Bossa Nova lives on.....
