Nice work, but while you have the fly wheel off, you should give the points a quick shine, I use a finger nail file, and a touch of grease on the points lobe.
When I'm turning the engine over to get the high side of the lobe doesn't matter if the exhaust is open or closed cuz I do not have a filler gauge I don't want to have to replace gaskets to figure out what I'm trying to figure out. I replaced everything on my engine with new parts, and I know it's the timing is off I get one spark for every five to six poles of the engine. But yeah I will probably have to go rent or buy a filler gauge to complete the setup but doesn't matter exhaust is open and closed on top dead center on the high side of the lobe?
Was the flywheel key sheared before you removed the flywheel? If so, that can also cause a no start condition as the flywheel would be out of position causing the ignition timing to be off.
That’s what I was thinking. Just happened to me. Wouldn’t start so I checked the points and when I went to put on flywheel I noticed the Woodruff key way was snapped in half. Put in a new one and it started right up!
I have one of these and it wasn't running right. I just did the points and condenser and I get about an 1/8" or 3.5mm max spark length on my spark tester. Is this too weak? Do you think I need to change the coil?
that key is called a woodruff key they come in all sizes ..take the old one with you to he hardware store for correct size also look at the keyway before you pull the flywheel see if 2 slots are in line Whell and Shaft ------- the condenser is very important for max spark a defect shows as a weak spark and pitted points
Tech Tip: remove spark plug and rotate crankshaft to lower piston, feed in a nylon rope and rotate crank until rope catches and tighten and torque flywheel bolt!
Yes that's a good tip! A clean piece of rope that gets squished to stop the flywheel from turning with thevtail end leftbout so you can remove it... Not everyone has steel fins or a flywheel holder...
Interesting video. If you had tried to start it and run it a bit on carb spray but failed wouldn't that have told you spark wasn't good enough? And of course if that started and ran it a bit, as long as you kept spraying some then that would implicate the carb or supply line or filter or the gas... I mean instead of just assuming it was the carb. For those that don't know a #2 phillips screwdriver with an insulated handle with shaft held close to metal can test spark as well as just laying a plug on head attached to plug wire...I assume there are videos on this out there...
check the magnets in the flywheel see if it grabs a screwdriver------ make sure key in stalled on shaft -- rechek gap on points how are you looking for a spark remove plug wire spin eng hold close to eng look for sparksome coils have a kill switch conn if so disc that lead try again
A spark tester that clips on the spark plug? What if the spark plug is fouled? What do you do then? You really need to check the condition of the ignition system first & then the spark plug for a strong spark. Rule out all the obvious failures of the ignition system first.
i have 53 dodge m37 --have a weak spark changed condense now it jumps 3/4 inch was 1/4 in condenser must match coil to perform correctly MFD is important = in series resonant circuit s
That guy went HAM trying to start it in the beginning. Thanks!
LOL
Thanks, my 30 y/o Columbia is back at work, I was able to fix the points with this video.

Love the flywheel removal tool!
do NOT forget to lubricate the cam lobe so that the points actuating arm does NOT wear out prematurely!
Thanks for the video, this is exactly what I needed to know.
Thanks, just what I was looking for!

Forgot to add that if the flywheel isn't torqued down tight enough this may allow the flywheel to turn a bit on the crank and shear that key again.

Great video! From the back, that looks a lot like a Jacobsen snow thrower.
Thanks for video...im having a hard time keeping my spark..had flywheel off 6 times and still doing something wrong

is that a 70s jacobsen?? ive got the same blower

U can just get a buddy to hold it usualy also that's what I like to don😂
Great video.
I not hear but how many mm you sett betwen the points
FINE JOB. Thanks
I’ve changed the points and condenser and coil. And I still don’t have a spark 🤔

Ok.. I can't figure out how to get the flywheel off on mine... Hitting it like that doesn't do a damn thing...
Good video

Flywheel to be torqued to 475 in.pds..important
This had better not be my issue...i just put the damn thing back together
we had an old saying at work years --tbl is where you find it -----meaning a trbl, just do not make since some times
In all honesty I think it was out of time due to the sheared key.
False the color of the spark is insignificant!
i got zapped by my blower last week....coil wire is old and cracked ..i definetely have good spark lol.new coil in order
lengh of jump is very important that is holding plug wire close to eng spin eng will jump i/2 inch if in good shape 1/4 in or less needs fixing
