I wanted to thank you. Came back from a mechanic and I needed more throttle. My snow would throw 5 feet and engine would die out and needed multiple manual restarts. Turned in throttle mechanism screw one turn. Snow throws 12 feet, not once did it stall, more than enough power. You made cleaning out from snow a pleasure. Thanks for also teaching me a lot about carb adjustments and throttle and governor adjustments. It was a mystery art before you explained it, now it's science. Real cool. I subscribed.
thank you. because of your videos i could save my old yard man. my service station wasnt able to do the job properly but because of you i could do it myself. they told me the price for the hours of the mecanics were too expensive an it would be better to buy a new one. i mean they were right, it was a lot of work, but i have time (but no money ;)) and thanks too you i could fix all problems by myself. Greetings from Austria
After changing the oil seal I was a bit confused how the governor linkage should be correctly connected , your video help to clear it out. thank you for posting.
Thank you! I took my carb. apart to clean it and put the linkages in the wrong place. I also had the governor out of adjustment. Thank you for taking the time to do these videos. We just got about 18 inches of snow and I really wasn't looking forward to shoveling.
Fantastic ! Your videos are so clear and easy to follow. I am a mechanical novice but I have found instructions to bring my snowblower back from disrepair. Thank you!
Just want to say thank you Donyboy73 for sharing all your engine know-how! You have single hand-idly saved me from having to shovel myself out of this Nor'easter. My snow-blower is running great because of you! Thank you. Thank You. Thank You!!!!!
I am rather savvy with small engines because i am a tinkerer and a RC nitro tunnel hall boat racer. Some of the time there is a learning curve (BOOM) just once. With all the snow we have had here in ohio a snow blower is a must. I given the task to fix all of my fathers equipment that had been neglected for a few or 8 years. To save my back no curve allowed. Brother you rock, Awesome video. The beast is back, she is running like a champ kicking A and throwing snow. Thanks!
my next project is a craftsman 31cc weed wacker that sat for 3 years while i was away.when i pulled the plug i can see the varnishing inside. it used to run excellent better than others of the same cc now i can barely keep it started. do I want to do a complete tare down of the engine and walbro carb so it will run like new again. but i have never torn one down that far.maybe do some polishing (IE) performance mods, any advice? or videos? I can take a 3.5cc k&B pro outboard nitro rc motor and run it at 60 on the water. I just really cant afford the learning curve any more. I dont have the money i used to lol. Thanks again. oh when i was done with the mtd blower i did a whole city block so the kids didn't have to walk in the street. I had to play with it lol.
awesome videos. I just got a Jacobson Homelite 824 with a Tecumseh 8HP engine for free that "didn't work." Cleaned the Carburetor, changed the belts, changed the fuel line and spark plug and it runs greats. The carburetor linkage and screw adjustment videos were extremely helpful. Thanks for the good info.
I must thank you for your very informative videos. I purchased a year old 8 ½ HP Yard Works for my father two years ago but didn’t really check it out. This year I noticed the snow blower was over revving and shaking its self to pieces. With advice from my brother in-law to check your videos, I was able to get the snow blower running correctly. Thank you again. Now I have a new reference for all of my small engines.
Take the carburetor off. Is only couple bolts holding on the intake pipe and twist carb off the Z - bends that move throttle plate, @1:30. Leave linkage on governor lever. 1:19 show full view of linkage from the governor to carburetor. Take pictures with phone too help w/reassemble@@imgusjj
Thanks for the video ! A few years ago I had my snow blower serviced and it just seemed like it never ran well. The small engine repair man said he worked on it for a while and got it as best he could. This company has been in business for 30 + years and yet they still didn't make it run right. It always seemed to idle slow. I just followed your tip on adjusting the screw on the throttle lever and it ran perfectly!
I just want to say Thank You. My 8.5HP Tecumseh engine was revving realy high. Thanks to your video I was able to adjust the govenor, now its running like it should. Once again Thank You.
I know this is a very old video, but the info is still so useful on all our old Craftsman machines with Tecumseh Snow King engines. Thanks from the future! 😉
Donyboy73: Just wanted to thank your for your excellent videos. When I started my Ariens Snow Blower this morning it was racing like crazy. NO idea why this would have occurred. I have never done anything to the carb, and it was running fine yesterday. Followed you instructions and was able to fix the problem by adjusting the governor arm. Motor ran great after that, but the unit would only throw snow a few feet and got bogged down in high drifts. Went back to RUclips and found your video on adjusting and replacing the V belt. Thanks to your excellent video the hardest part was finding the right belt. - I did find a cotter pin puller to be very useful in getting the belt aligned on the wheel. Very grateful for your help.
My snow blower was running like crap so I had a friend take the carb off and take it to a friend of his and the guy took it all apart and cleaned it good. After putting it back on the snow blower the engine would race. Well my friend got sick so he hasn't been able to fix it. I found your video and now it runs like a charm! I just have to adjust the high throttle screw at the throttle handle to let the rpms come up just a little bit more. Thanks!
i'm happy you got this video in here, i just bought a blower and rebuilt the carburator. my trottle dint work at all. i tryed everything and seem to me that my throttle linkage was not right. i have seen your video and it confirmed my problem, the guy intaled the linkage upside down so the rod is going under the gas pipe instead of on top haha. thanks for the video it helped me alot
You are my savior. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Now I have a snowblower that doesn't rev like crazy and keep moving speed around and the idle now works. I might neeed a deep clean though because I was only able to adjust it with choke adjusted at notch 2, 1 being close and 4 fully opened.
Thank you so much for you kindness, your altruism and your good explanations. You save me a lot of time, you give me the opportunity to learn how to do it instead of being totally dependent of a service, in a place with a shortage of mechanic technicians and where the service is so expensive and slow. You save me too hundreds of dollars and I'll be more safe as a winter storm is ahead. Thank you so much you're a great man !
Wow ! After unassembling the carb, I just reassemble my snowblower and it has an unstable rpm. I just set the governor screw (try & test) at the "right" place, no thing else change, and now it run so smooth and powerfull. Thanks a lot :).
Two things need to be addressed in this video. 1. What is the down position for the throttle? Off of idle? 2. You mention where the governor arm should be when tightening the screw but you do not indicate where the piece the governor arm connects to should be? That piece coming out of the engine block moves about 15 degrees in either direction and has a major impact on if this works or not. Thanks for all your videos!
Thanks! My first attempt at small engine repair and this, plus another video of yours was all needed to solve the problem. Appreciate the work that went into this teaching aid.
I got mine running great today. FYI, the length of the longer rod (the one from the governor to the throttle control) is about 6.5 inches and the shorter one (the one from the governor to the carb throttle) is about 4.25 inches. Thanks for the informational video. Also, the position of the rods seems to be important. I had the longer rod in the wrong hole. I used the hole that's in your video.
Super helpful! Thanks for taking the time to put this video together. I'd replaced the carb and had to remove the governor arm. Now I know what i have to do to reduce the full throttle RPM.
Donyboy, my confidence in my abilities to work on my own engines has skyrocketed since I started watching your videos. Maybe too much. I'm stuck. New carb (non-adjustable) and some 1/4" internal fuel line had my problem child (Ranch King w/ 8hp Tecumseh) purring like a kitten. Then I tried fine tuning and screwed it all up! Stalls at full throttle. Tried various adjustment on high and low throttle speed screws. Governor hasn't been touched at all. Love your channel!! Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!
Don, I’m learning new tricks all the time! The Tecumseh carbs seem to be the most challenging or maybe just a bit intimidating compared to briggs or Kohler stuff. I got a Tecumseh carb all cleaned up & running good. Idle speed is a bit too much.
Thanks for this video -- I had this exact problem after rebuilding the carb on my snow blower -- this saved me a lot of time and agony trying to figure out what I had done :).
Thanks Don! As always, you are my go-to for my small engine issues! As you mentioned, I replaced the carburetor and took off the governor arm for the linkages and didn't re-install it in the correct position. At full throttle I was turning at 4200 RPM!
SPOT ON! This is exactly what my problem was, I had the gov linkage set way to far back from where it should be,m next time ill take pictures and come back to your videos!
Thanks for all the info it sure helps to understand how to I am sure you had alot of troule shooting experience great job and thanks again not every one can take a snow blower in for repairs due to low income or time . It's nice how you explain things I would recommend adj. To the original specs. Thanks again
Yesterday I replaced the carb, (didn't touch the governor, control arm), adjusted idle screw and carb adjuster at bottom of bowl but still way over revs. Will look at governor arm and throttle spring next. Of course the machine is 21 years old and don'e own me a dime. Thanks for the direction!
@donyboy73 Just to let you know, I bumped up the governor speed by adjusting the small screw on the throttle lever and it has made a huge difference. Someone must have been playing with the screw before I got the machine...
Great video. Took my snowblower in for new carb and they didn't put the linkage back in correctly. tried to tell me that's the way it is. Uh...no. Still didn't seem right and now it appears the spring at the throttle lever is missing. Any idea on a part number that. The big spring, not the little one that the adjusting screw runs through.
Hi There - just wanted to thank you for your videos, they have helped me rebuild my carburetor (Carb Kit) and place my linkages in the right spots as well as adjust the carb. Blower is now running like a top!
Very helpful video to cover what has been written up in a less-than- clear way in other places. I have a question though on my setup. Picked up a generator with the HM100 that has a piece of linkage with a spring built in running from the governor to the carb, almost looks like it is there to try to clear the exhaust. I have not seen this on any other Techumsehs or other generators of the same model. I’m wondering if this was stock or the issue I’m fighting is someone putting the wrong linkage on. Thanks!
Donyboy73, I am stuck! I have come across a problem that I haven't seen anyone specify or address in their videos. I must say I really appreciate all your knowledge and videos you post. They have been very helpful. The snowblower engine I'm working on is very similar to the one in this video; carb, linkage, throttle lever, and the governor. The problem that occurs is the engine bogs down when three things are happening; the wheels are being driven, the auger is spinning, and snow is being thrown. The engine doesn't seem to bog down when only the first two are happening while not throwing snow. What I have done: cleaned carb and made proper adjustments to the main jet fuel screw below the carb bowl and the idle mixture screw, checked compression (100-115psi), and pulled the underbelly of the machine to check for abnormal wear of all components (nothing obvious). Please let me know what you suggest and/or a link to one of your videos. Thank you in advance!
Interesting, virtually identical for me. Starts on first pull, runs/idles great. Throttle up no issues. Start the driving mechanism, no issues. Start the auger no issues. Soon as I start putting snow/load through the deck it sounds like it wants to slowly quit as the RPM's die off. The engine sounds like it is in great running condition so I'm wondering is it my carb or governor?? Carb was rebuilt from previous guy I bought it from but not sure otherwise of it's condition. How sensitive is a governor? I mean could spring tension, or even the loop hole it's tied to on the governor make that difference? Been tinkering for weeks and can't figure this damn thing out. Only thing I've done is put a new belt on this snowblower. If tension is too tight, could it cause this? Thanks for your help. My carb and linkage looks very similar to the one in the video. It's a Craftsman 5/23 with Tucumseh engine
Hi Dan, I have an old Canadiana 8hp snowblower that I completely rebuilt from bearings to carb, ive been running it hard with all this snow and every once in a while it Boggs and wants to die while im in deep snow, say every 5 min, I just can't figure it out, took the carb apart , its very clean and rebuilt, all new lines and filter, I even ran it with the gas cap loose in case my vent wasn't working, im lost, never had this kinda thing... any help would be greatly appreciated , thanks for all your good work..
Very good videos. I have a tecumseh snowblower that starts and runs but it pulses the rpm up and down won't stay at a steady full throttle. Also seems to need some choke left on or it will die.
I've adjusted the governor already, yet it still goes to the moon unless I throttle it back down manually. and I already fixed a broken exhaust valve keeper from the excessive rpms when my friend had it. As a Briggs tech , I think its time to open up this Tecumseh and check the governor gear and the arm, unless you have any other ideas sir. Love your videos, they've helped me out quite a bit over the years.
I'm in south Florida, so I don't have a snowblower, although I did have to find and wear my jacket last week. I do have a Champion generator, which I'm trying to repair. My question to you is, re: your video, when you said ..."throttle lever in down position..." with regard to the machine to which you are demonstrating, is the "down" position where the throttle is "open" or "closed"? Many thanks - I hope to have the generator ready for hurricane season.
Donyboy! You have made my day, all videos are exactly what I was looking for thank you thank you! I do have a quick question, my snowblower will sound just fine when idling, yet when start driving and snow blowing the engine revs high then low. Cycling back and forth until it stalls. ? Any idea what that could be? Fuel filter?
Thanks for the Video! Bought an old tiller and when I push the throttle lever up and down - it does nothing. Replaced the spring and that didn't help. Any suggestions? Thanks again for all the videos you put on RUclips!
Great tutorial! You explains things very well. I have a problem that is a related to the throttle lever, but is a bit different. I have a 1999 Ariens model 924104-ST1028 Sno-Thro with a Tecumseh model HMSK100 159391W emgine on it. I can raise the throttle lever & increase the rpms, but as I use the snow blower the lever drops & the rpms shortly drop off. So, I have to tie off the throttle leave in the max up position while snow blowing, otherwise the rpms drop off too much to blow snow well. I thought the problem might be the Tecumseh 34663 Spring as you showed in the video above. When I checked it out, it looks intact, in one piece, plus it does work when increasing the rpms. So, what could be the cause of losing the rpms? Sure would appreciate some help. I would prefer not to have to buy the entire Control Bracket Assembly P/N 34677. Looking for a less expensive fix if one is available.
Thank you so much for putting together this great video. I had the carb on my Tecumseh 9.5 cleaned and have been battling this high idle issue for about 2 months. After watching your video, I made a few adjustments (mainly the idle control being the culprit) and the machine ran like a champ!
Hi. I have an 8 hp Tecomseh on an MTD 24 in snow blower. I could hear it faintly surging (changing engine speed ) for a long time. this storm it got much worse. The surging was changing the RPM's much more then it died after I did half the drive way. I took off the heat shield thinking the carb needed adjust only to find it is not adjustable. I changed the spark plug. I cleaned both jets although they did not look dirty. Carb cleaner is blowing freely through the holes. I cleaned out the float chamber although that was not dirty either. It starts fine, sound s good for the first maybe, 2 min then it starts reving up and down and I can see the speed governor moving back and forth, then it starts to run worse and worse and in about a minute it dies as if I had shut it off. When I had the float bowl off I noticed holding the float up made fuel run out of the fuel hose (I had blower standing on it's nose) so I don't think it's fuel starvation. The governor arm has never been off the blower. After the first few minutes of not moving, the governor starts moving as I described eventually the engine just stops. Any clue?
Excellent video on the governor operation and adjustments! Thanks! I have a problem that wasn't addressed in the video. My engine's speed lever gives me high rpm at the top of the lever throw like it should, but will now no longer drop down to idle speed when I push the lever down to the lower position? The revs stay high in both positions now. What 's going on and how do I fix it? Thanks!
Johnnie Guitar I am having the same problem. Did you ever get an answer to this problem. If so can you pass it along to me. thank you my e-mail xey456@yahoo.com
Johnnie Guitar Did you receive a response to this yet? I think I am experiencing the same thing. Was revving crazy high and adjusted it down to normal but now the throttle seems unresponsive..:(
I just rebuilt mine.... check to make sure that the governor arm, located on the pullly side of the engine, is not binding. You can check it with the engine off and the throttle set to slow... The throttle rod on the top of the carb should rotate up against the idle screw. If the governor arm moves freely and the throttle rod rotates as it should then start the engine and see if backing out the idle screw helps. If everything seems to be working and the throttle rotation has no effect, I would check to see if maybe the throttle vain has fallen off the shaft or something is blocking it from closing
How should stay throttle with engine off? is a correct way to set the Governor: Unscrew the governor screw, set to fully open throttle and then tight the Governor screw? I don't know if my governor configuration is ok. My carburator throttle butterfly stay 1/3 or 1/4 open when engine is off. I havent changed it for now, I don't want make mistakes... I only changed the spring with original code
Great Video !! I have one of these Snow Blowers, When I put a load on it, like in snow it stops, It sounds like it is running a little rough too...it is the 522R It has been sitting a while but I cleaned out the old gas and put in new gas...and at least got it running...Do you think the carb should be rebuilt ?
@donyboy73 I have a question about the screws/bolts that hold the cover plate that covers the carburetor assembly and the ignition wires/etc. What size and threading are these screws, or what type. I'm missing two and the cover vibrates all over the place. I figure it can't be good for the ignition key and the wires which are already not in the greatest shape.
I have a Tecumsea snowblower my problem is that when I put a big load on it in some deep snow it starts to sputter and will just keep sputtering until I remove the load or put throttle down to half speen then move it back to full throttle be for it smooths out again Thanks for your time
I wanted to thank you. Adjusted governor arm as shown in this great video. Tested engine and it now runs great, ready for another 21 years of blowing snow! Thanks
I watch a lot of videos of this sort. You are more of a teacher than just a how-to.
Thanks! Donny, I made the mistake to loosen the governor lever to remove carburetor linkage
How do you remove carb linkages without removing governor arm?
Take the carburetor off. Is only couple bolts holding on the intake pipe and twist carb off the Z - bends that move throttle plate, @1:30. Leave linkage on governor lever. 1:19 show full view of linkage from the governor to carburetor. Take pictures with phone too help w/reassemble@@imgusjj

@4mudski u could try a self tapping bolt, if that fails the drill and tap to one size bigger

Best adjustment explanation so far.
@Fred6191 one is the throttle lever, the one that goes up and down, and the other is the choke
@jayvette75 might be running lean, if u have an adjusting screw under the carb turn it out a bit, or clean and rebuild the carb
Thanks for sharing the video. I was able to tune up the 8HP engine on my Ariens snow blower.
I know the video is old but I own a old Snow King with the 8hp Tecumseh. This video really helped me out! Thanks Soooo Much!! 😁✔
@MrMacLaurin sometimes replace the bowl and bowl gasket, kit#631021b they are only 4.99 each
Thanks Don! As always, you are my go-to for my small engine issues! As you mentioned, I replaced the carburetor and took off the governor arm for the linkages and didn't re-install it in the correct position. At full throttle I was turning at 4200 RPM!
thanks for watching
Another great video. I adjusted my full throttle rpms by just tightening the screw by the throttle lever.
@aaroncake good job! sometimes the spring gets weak inside so u have to tighten it, don't over rev it because u can snap the connecting rod
@gerryguay1 try adjusting the carb or cleaning and rebuilding it
Yesterday I replaced the carb, (didn't touch the governor, control arm), adjusted idle screw and carb adjuster at bottom of bowl but still way over revs. Will look at governor arm and throttle spring next. Of course the machine is 21 years old and don'e own me a dime. Thanks for the direction!
@jaylosix if you prime them too much it is normal for them to do that
@donyboy73 Just to let you know, I bumped up the governor speed by adjusting the small screw on the throttle lever and it has made a huge difference. Someone must have been playing with the screw before I got the machine...
These are the most concise and accurate video's out there. Love it.
Thanks man! I was able to get my motor running with your help. Keep it up!
You truly know your trade. Thanks again,& keep the videos coming,please.......................
Great Video! Your are a blessing to all who want to fix their small engines!
Thanks! I think you made this video exactly for me..... I took my carb apart and had the arm out of adjustment.
Great video. Took my snowblower in for new carb and they didn't put the linkage back in correctly. tried to tell me that's the way it is. Uh...no. Still didn't seem right and now it appears the spring at the throttle lever is missing. Any idea on a part number that. The big spring, not the little one that the adjusting screw runs through.
donyboy73, keep up the good work: clear, concise, and good camera control. I learned a lot. Thank you.
Very Useful, thanks for taking time doing this!
@shiscock1 for a 4 cycle engine it is approx 3500-3600 rpm
Thanks. Really good info for this problem. Much appreciated.👍
great videos! changed the carb on a free simplicity I got. it runs perfect now. thanks
+ryan gray you're welcome
Hi There - just wanted to thank you for your videos, they have helped me rebuild my carburetor (Carb Kit) and place my linkages in the right spots as well as adjust the carb. Blower is now running like a top!
you're welcome
Thank you-----very clear, concise and to the point---Thanks again.
Thanks!
Donyboy73,
I am stuck! Thank you in advance!
maybe some of the mechanical parts are harder than normal to turn?
It's a Craftsman 5/23 with Tucumseh engine
did u replace the seat and needle
Hi Dan, I have an old Canadiana 8hp snowblower that I completely rebuilt from bearings to carb, ive been running it hard with all this snow and every once in a while it Boggs and wants to die while im in deep snow, say every 5 min, I just can't figure it out, took the carb apart , its very clean and rebuilt, all new lines and filter, I even ran it with the gas cap loose in case my vent wasn't working, im lost, never had this kinda thing... any help would be greatly appreciated , thanks for all your good work..
Just found you on RUclips. Your videos are super helpful thank you
Very good videos.
Many thanks - I hope to have the generator ready for hurricane season.
thanks so much for your help. i was working on a baja worrior for my little brother. and long story short i was a bit lost. thanks again. :)
EXCELLENT instructional video. well done. thanks.
Very well put together and informative.
Looking for a less expensive fix if one is available.
is there an adjusting screw underneath carb, if so unscrew it a bit to run richer
Thank you so much for putting together this great video. I had the carb on my Tecumseh 9.5 cleaned and have been battling this high idle issue for about 2 months. After watching your video, I made a few adjustments (mainly the idle control being the culprit) and the machine ran like a champ!
@allake2011 that would most likely be due to carb settings or a dirty carb
Any clue?
@4mudski could be running too lean, usually i turn out the bottom screw 1/4 inch when this happens or it could be a leaking exhaust valve
Sorry, I have not received an answer yet Thomas.. :(
Johnnie Guitar Did you receive a response to this yet?
Thank you. Very good video young man.
Great Videos Dony. I find your videos informative, and easy to follow. Thanks
I figure it can't be good for the ignition key and the wires which are already not in the greatest shape.
your welcome, more videos to come
I have a Tecumsea snowblower my problem is that when I put a big load on it in some deep snow it starts to sputter and will just keep sputtering until I remove the load or put throttle down to half speen then move it back to full throttle be for it smooths out again
Thanks for your time
Thanks Donnie! This was exactly what I needed.
Well done Donny, very helpful, Thanks
