Steve Goodman was as great a singer/songwriter of the 70s as his more famous peers (John Prine, Jim Croce, Gordon Lightfoot, etc.) and a heck of a guitar player.
Researching them I found they were formed in Kansas City, Missouri in 1962. The members met in high school. In 1967 the band was backed by a large Kansas City horn band known as the Smokin' Emeralds and performed at a venue called the Place in the Westport district of KC. By 1971, the band consisted of Melvin Webb on drums, Roger Durham on percussion, Charles Love on guitar and vocals, Charles McCormick on bass, Harry Williams on percussion, and Willis Draffen on guitar. They moved to Los Angeles to secure a record contract. The band also replaced its drummer Melvin Webb with Eddie Summers, who they met at a recording session. They were called the Sinceres but changed to Bloodstone before the debut album was released. The band charted thirteen songs between 1973 and 1984. Nearly all of the members have passed. They originally ended in 1986 after they broke apart. They later continued to tour and perform with original members Charles McCormick, Harry Williams and newer member Donald Brown. The hits include Natural High, Give Me Your Heart, Never Let You Go, My Little Lady, We Go Back A Long Way, and Go On & Cry.
@@alanvallazza9781 If July 20,1973 is the actual date of this performance, Roger Durham passed away the next week on July 27,1973 from injuries sustained from falling off a horse at the age of 27.

Wow. I remember seeing this episode when it originally aired. 50 years ago. Joan Baez on the same bill with Black Oak Arkansas and The Pointer Sisters. Joan singing "I Dreamed I Saw Joe Hill". Steve Goodman, still young and in good health. Seems like a million years ago. Thank you for posting this.
Early Steve Goodman. He passed away from Lukemia in 1984. Most of his career he was ill. He wrote City Of New Orleans and performed a faster version than Arlo. John Prine was hired by a label in 1970 and refused to join if Steve, his buddy, didn't get hired as well. He played City Of New Orleans for Arlo Guthrie and let Guthrie record his famous version. He then co- wrote with John Prine You Never Called Me By My Name which was a song spoofing country music. David Allen Coe had a hit with it. He didn't have big hits himself on the charts but had critically acclaimed albums. He was from Chicago and he wrote two songs about the Cubs. A Dying Cubs Fan's Last Request and Go Cubs Go. He kept his illness a secret, having first been diagnosed in 1974. He passed in 1984 at 36 years old. Some of his ashes were spread at Wrigley Field in 1988. He was primarily a folk, pop, country and singer-songwriter. Many artists recorded Steve's works including Jimmy Buffett. He once was opening for Steve Martin comedy tours. Kris Kristofferson was another act he toured with. Goodman was survived by his wife and three daughters.

Wow... What a show. Joan beautifully singing a now politically incorrect song about Dixie, and the Pointer Sisters knocking out some cool jazz scat... Doesn't get any better. Thanks Mr Sugarman!
Count me in. This is another great line up.
Bloodstone !!!! Never let u go babyyyyyyyy
The Pointer Sisters are doing the Lambert Hendricks Ross version of Cloudburst.
Lambert, Hendricks, and Ross's version was much better. 😊
Oh wow, didn’t realize Spinal Tap was in this!😅
😂😂😂😂
"Naked Foot" was the Pointer Sisters' second song July 20, 1973 ep 25 before Joan & Mimi did "Best of Lovers"
My favorite show. Black Oak Arkansas is on this show.
Great to see again!
Can't wait, The Midnight Special!
You missed the 8 AM showing. Maybe they'll show it again tonight???
It’s out there
I was at work when this episode premiered so I'm playing catch up right now. Thanks for letting me know.
Someone needs to add the Pointer Sisters at 37:21 to the menu!
One of the classic moments at Woodstock was Joan Baez’s rendition of “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot”-sounded like it was coming from the Throne of God.
Black Oak Arkansas!
The Pointer Sisters, OMG! What is better than that? Nothing I know of.
starting around 41:53 I keep replaying over and over at very loud volume the song 'Best of Lovers/Friends' with Joan Baez and Mimi Farina, their singing voices are so amazing together, it made me cry several tears thinking about a former lover hehe. And also missing my dad, he said Joan was his favorite. So good!! Thank you so much for the fantastic audio quality, so crystal! Love this! Very awesome to see Steve Goodman in there playing his guitar for two numbers! Love the Pointer Sisters as well, awesome recording of them!
If there really is a Hell & you go there when you die. You can expect to listen to Joan Baez for all eternity
Ahhh. Bloodstone!!
I was wondering why it's on here already I'm like todays Friday right ok I'm not going crazeee I'm watching it now
Accidentally went live at 5am today instead of 5pm. Enjoy!
Naked Foot...Naked Foot...put it on repeat
Enjoyed! Thanks!!
Bruce lee died on the day this was aired live on TV. Great performances esp.Joan Baez.
Yikes Jim Dandy putting his vienna sausage on display for all to see LOL
Full Moose Knuckle alright.
It's still out there.
Smokie link to you, good sir!
Mister Hot Pants! Milton Berle musta have had a heartattack.
@@walterrizotto8668Omg! I read a story about Milton B. in Peter Frampton’s biography; had no idea he was so “proud” 🤦♀️
Joan Baez…sigh….❤
ikr? that voice!
Danke!
thank you!
Did Joan Baez write The night they drove old Dixie down or did she just sing it ? Where is she from?
No, she didn't write it. It's a cover of "The Band". They did it about 1969.

Damn this is so good. Bloodstone crushed it and a young Tommy Alderidge behind the drumkit with Black Oak. Yeah. I still don't get Joan Baez and her attitude.
Joan's not a pimple on Carole King's butt.
That for sure. @@MichaelRevis-qj6ix
I love Joan Baez, those are fighting words! haha 👊✊. Loved Bloodstone too, great band and the song ‘Natural High’ I remember as a young teen.
Cool! Looking forward! 😎
Well, it was a total surprise at this hour, but the show was entertaining as always! Joan was great, as was Bloodstone, the Pointer Sisters, Black Oak Arkansas, and all the rest! Thanks for the Friday the 13th surprise, Midnight Special! 😎✌
@@StephanieJeanneOh yeah, it is Friday the 13th today, isn't it? Oh well, that explains it. TMS are just being weirdees today, that's all😅.
@@gregoryduncan3067 Haha, yeah, that's my guess.😂
We will call it Friday the 13th… exactly. Thanks for understanding
@@themidnightspecialtvshow 😂No problem. It kind of made my day... interesting!✌️
Joans first guest- Apollo Creed, was awesome.
Wow those yellow pants leave little to the imagination.
That lead singer for Black Oak Arkansas...He's got, you know, an armadillo in his trousers. I mean it's really quite frightening.
My wife sang backup for Anita Ward "Ring My Bell" on Season 7, Episode 27, aired in 1979. Does that clip appear anywhere?
That episode was available for a month about 6 weeks ago in the Members portal. Unfortunately it will be a while before the episode is released again. We will see if posting just the song is possible. Thanks so much for watching!
@@themidnightspecialtvshow Thanks, I hope it's possible! My wife would be thrilled! There's a recent interview with Anita Ward online, where she recounts the whirlwind chart success of Ring My Bell, and the mad dash to hire singers and dancers, rehearse, and fly them to LA for the taping, all over the course of five or sixedays. I've heard my wife's version of the story for years!
What happened to the song/time list?
I was looking for it too
Why is this premiering at 8AM instead of 8PM?
12 hour difference with a mistake of time.
It was a mistake and once a video is public you can’t undo
@@themidnightspecialtvshow No worries. I figured it was something like that.
🌟🎶🎵♥️🎵🎶🌟
Whoa. Looks like Jim Dandy and the rest of the boys packed their noses but good back stage.
Friday night. Ready to party. Ready to get loose. Ready to let it all hang out. Ready for… Joan Baez?
Seems like yesterday
