2:44 The point of the local map is to be able to direct people to their store. When I was younger I worked at a fast food place and people would call all the time asking where we're located or how to get there from where they are. Having that map will allow whoever answers the phone to the customer to direct them on which route to take to get there.
Nowadays pretty much everyone uses a gps but there are still people out there who don't.

Linus has said on the WAN show that they may not continue the series because these episodes are expensive to make in terms of human resources and do not perform particularly well in viewership. I suspect it would take a sponsor with deep pockets (like the one behind this video) who merely likes the concept.

phonebooks are still delivered free in my area, a big pile at the bottom of the apartment complex. I take one every year. it collects dust will only be used once or twice.

Regarding maps, I think it'd be a good idea for people to just have a continually-updating local copy of OpenStreetMap or whatever else to at least be able to find things if the cellular networks go down or something. In an emergency, it would be helpful to have local copies you can print out in lieu of a proper Atlas or paper map :)
I've done something similar in the past when traveling where I did not want to pay for roaming data. Basically just a digital paper map at times, but better then nothing.
Or you can just download local maps with Google Maps and use them offline. I did that a few times when I went to the US and it worked fined. It updates the map as soon as you get internet
I have a 15km area around my house loaded
+kendokaaa yeah, I've done that, but I've also had it spontaneously expire on me sometimes. Plus, something you can control and that isn't on your phone would be better too :) at least for the many scenarios that include not having internet or anything.
I generally need GPS and to search for places and businesses so offline gmaps works for me :)

Ezine Anderson I used to use a map book all the time myself. It's not as hard as younger people make them out to be. The phonebook, on the other hand, is probably worthless.

Also that one time, when you went climb a mountain? maybe you could have a challenge to do a CarPC or bike PC or outdoor PC or jumping the hurdles PC :D something that you have to figure out to build a PC.. anyway cool stuff this video!

For those who are wondering, I believe Coverstar sells pool products in Canada.
Do a version where you team up with total noobs and they have to do all the work. You can tell them information about computers in general, but can't say anything about specific components. Like you need a water cooler and can tell them what good features of coolers are, but not recommend anything specific. Then they have to do the build with supervision and you can't touch anything
MrCarrellScience they can find out on their own researching? What's the point of them even being involved if all the info they give is just going to be a SINGLE Google search away? Basically just have noobs do it instead, no need for the broad rules.
Could even have consulting sessions each day like in the morning, then they are left on their own for the rest of the day. They get like 30 minutes to ask questions then have to go apply it.

What year was that phone book? That matters when answering Linus' question about whether this many businesses just disappeared.
Well, in the U.S. the phone company updates them annually. There are no inactive numbers listed, and a company has to pay to be listed in the yellow page section, so if they're out of business, that goes away automatically. There is only one phone company that provides analog phone lines in any given area in the U.S., so if an analog phone number changes hands, the phone company has everyone's account info, so that gets changed too. It's pretty foolproof.
Where it breaks down is when companies get a VoIP line. Then they won't be listed in the phone book at all unless they call and pay to have their number added. Again though, if the company goes under, they get removed automatically.
Yup, I know Linus is in Canada. I'm pretty sure their phone book system is the same as ours, but I said U.S. just in case.
I imagine our phone companies won't stop updating them until they stop publishing them. I mean, a computer does 95% of the work. Yeah, they're one book here now too.

There was a mistake on your car ad, If you just write WTB a gaming pc, although there is no question mark, people could understand it as if you are the one selling the gaming pc, and no one is going to buy a gaming pc from a guy that announces a gaming pc with a drawing board stuck at the back of a car... may be if you write " I WTB" there could be a little bit more chance of someone texting you.
