Finding great compositions doesn’t come easy to everyone all of the time. There are a bunch of composition tips videos out there. The issue with composition tips videos is they only work if you’ve already got a pretty good looking scene in front of you.
You can use these tips to adjust or tweak your composition to improve it, but how do you find a decent composition or scene to begin with?
This week I’m going to share a few things you can do to help you train your eye to see better compositions when you’re out in the field.
From my experience as a photographer and workshop leader, if you’re struggling to find a good composition it often helps to take a step back and look at how you are observing a location.
When you find it challenging to see a composition, try these practical ideas.

Another set of helpful tips - and cracking captures. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing Andrew.... great video & comments/suggestions/tips.... always enjoy your videos & your experience with comments... great locations in WA to photograph.. cheers 😀
Cheers Robert, glad to hear you found this interesting mate. I also appreciate the feedback, thank you!
Very helpful most definitely something to think about on my next shoot thanks Andrew.👍
Great ideas and techniques! One thing I learned when I started shooting is don't go into a scene and plant your feet or your tripod. You're more likely to not move around and expolore the environment. Walk around, be aware of the environment around you and the composition will come.
I watch a lot of videos how photography and almost without fail they look at things like getting the right light and composition. That is great for those who are really interested in the art of photography but what I would find really useful are some tips on what you do when you arrive at a site and the light sucks and there are no great angles to use (or at least nothing blindingly obvious.) We travel and document places all around W.A. and we arrive at places we want to film and photograph in all sorts of conditions. We usually have a schedule to meet and we have a few minutes to just get some quick shots, shoot a bit of footage and then move on. What I would really love to see is something on how to get the best out of a bad situations.
Hey mate, I'm familiar with your videos and the schedule you keep. I think I understand what you're after. Usually, when I'm asked for advice about what someone can do to improve the photo they take, I tell them to spend some time to become familiar with a location and find subjects that interest them and wait around for the best light. But you're asking, what should you do if you don't have time to do that. 🤣 Well, it depends on the style of photo you are trying to take. In your case is more documentary photography. My advice would be to concentrate more on photographing subjects, using interesting angles and framing. This might be an interesting topic for a video, thanks! 👍
Another great and informative video. Thank you
Thanks very much David, glad to hear you enjoyed this one mate!
Helpful as always
beautiful images Andrew and good advice too. Hope all is well with you
Cheers Jimmy, thanks very much mate. I am doing well, thanks for your support.
Great video Andrew, I got a lot out of that
Cheers Alex, camp fire season is just around the corner, about time for a trip.
Interesting video as always Andrew. Some really good tips illustrated with beautiful images and video footage. Taking images of elements, or intimate landscapes, can often become the focus of the trip. It is not uncommon for me to come home without any images of the broader landscape but quite a few intimate landscapes. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for that John, I really appreciate your feedback mate. I think Intimate landscape is a much easier way to get started and get the creative juices going. I'm personally a fan of a broader perspective of the landscape, but it find there's a lot more challenges to navigate.
Thanks Andrew, as always very helpful tips, great scenery as well as brilliant images. I always like to scout a new area the day before I go out, it really helps.
Thanks Ross, glad you found some helpful tips in this one. I think the amount of success I have at a location corolates to the amount of scouting I do.
Gorgeous video with super good instruction! Thank you Andrew
Thanks so much Rita, glad you enjoyed this one! 😊
We can always use more good tips on compositions in the landscape. Thanks!
I'll be working on composition for as long as I am photographing, thank you Juanita.
Hi Andrew, thanks for this video. Useful tips to think more about features and subjects when looking for a composition. I like the idea of a mood board to inform decisions about where to setup and encourage return visits to locations.
Thanks so much Peter, glad you found this one interesting mate. I think the mood board concept is a nice way to visualise how you can piece together the interesting parts to a landscape. I think this approach is more realistic than expecting to turn up to a location and just find a scene around the corner, cheers!
I’ve been experimenting with scouting, traveling light, unburdened by full photography kit, just smartphone in a shirt pocket, essentials in a fanny pack, GaiaGPS running on the phone for route finding and recording actual track. Phone shot locations are recorded as waypoints on the map. I’m eager now to apply your suggestions to the process.
Thanks for your comment Michael, I think what you've described is a great process. nice and light, agile and the focus is on what you find not the gear. It'll be interesting to see how this approach grows.
HI , I tried to check Square space, but can not find how much does it cost ?
Hi Huk, the easier thing to do is Google Squarespace and prices. There are tiers of prices available and they differ depending on which country you are from.
@@Andrew_marr Thank you.
