It’s absolutely bonkers how much great hist fic you’ve read from so many authors 🔥🔥🔥 I’ve gotten into hist fic only recently through Cornwell with Warlord, Sharpe, and the first couple Last Kingdom books and desperately need to get into all these series that you are gushing about! I already have the Iggulden ones and Wolf Hall and an omnibus for the Cicero trilogy so they’re patiently waiting their turn on the shelf.
I think people who don't usually read historical fiction will be surprised to learn there are so many series!! Good that you've found some key authors to love. If I had to go back through the Maisie Dobbs series and rank them... well, I'd have to reread them all! 🥰
I think they definitely would! Historical fiction is a genre with such a wide variety of subgenres and forms and lengths. Hahah, a good excuse for a reread!
I am actually planning to read “Lustrum” this month! “Imperium” is in my top 3 reads this year, so I am excited to hear your praise! Hope to get to “Lancelot” and maybe “Wolf’s Den” this coming Winter, and loved the “Wolf Hall” TV adaptation, so that one is definitely also on my Longterm TBR list! Cheers!
Hilary Mantel is a regular favourite, no surprise there. What about Gore Vidal, if I might ask, he would easily make it into any list that caters to historical fiction. He was one of the best writers in that genre and for a long time, too bad not a soul these days talk about him on BookTube.
@@williamgwynne To wet your beak, you can start with Julian (1964) or "Creation" (1981) which is about the Axial Age when the major religions first leapt on the historical scene
I read 1876 by Vidal and found it fairly dense, and not as good a source as I was hoping for Reconstruction information...then also I found his nonfiction, Perpetual War, to be plain and obvious, rather the other direction. 🤷🏻♀
@@williamgwynne Yes. 3 novels total, plus The Old Man and the Sea. I think I liked this one best though. I remember finishing it on a sunny day in my front yard in high school and just losing it. BTW, If you're ever in the States, I recommend a side trip to his house in Key West, FL. Many ancestors of his famous six-toed cats still live on the property. And the nearby nightlife is pretty cool too. Cheers!

Great list! I recommend The Hild Sequence by Nicola Griffith (Book 1: Hild; Book 2: Menewood)
Thanks so much for the recommendation! I'll check it out :).
Ufff, really nice!
Thanks for watching!
I couldn´t get into for whom the bell tolls at all. The characters were so frustrating haha
Shame it did not click with you! Have you tried out any other Hemingway?
@@williamgwynne yeah i really enjoyed the old man and the sea. I’m gonna try farewell to arms next

I have not read any Vidal as of yet. Any particular work you recommend I begin with?

@@MargaretPinard Yes, he had a reputation for being aloof, comes with the intellectual territory. Compared to Harold Bloom, Vidal is a breeze 🤣
Boooo! Wolf Hall!! Booooo!
Great list though. Need to read For Whom The Bell Tolls.

Oi, no disrespect allowed! I think you’d love For Whom the Bell Tolls
❤❤❤
Thanks for watching!
For Whom the Bell Tools is one of the few books that made me outright bawl. Loved it so so much!
Has a way of tugging on the heartstrings! Have you read any other Hemingway?
