Very clear and concise. No BS. Thank you. I have a 2010 traverse lt with the 3.6L. Mechanic said motor seized eventhou she had plenty of oil in her. Im not convinced. Got her towed back to the house. Put my battety charger on the battery (deaf fromnsitting plus she was goving me issues anyway b4 i took her to mechanic, let battery charge up for 3 hours. Time for bed so i try and start car to see if battery charged enuff for a crank butnindidnt switch the button on charger from charge to start and all of a sudden the car goes into click starter mode until inget to battery and disconnect the battey charger. I mean it was like click click click click which is rhe damiliar sound of starter as you had sugested. Should i get nee battery if this one doesnt charge up and then stsrter if breaker bar moves? I would try to turn the crankshaft by hand first before getting a battery because if it’s locked up, you wasted money on a battery right now.

I been driving with an oil leak from my rocker cover, and topping up oil when needed.
Yesterday I thaught my engin was seized.
Thanks to you, I now know it was my starter.
Any way I fixed both problems.

Hi sir,I saw òn this video that you didn't remove the serpentine belt is that optional? When rotate the engine it have to be clockwise right?
If the engine turns normal then no need to take off belt however if it doesn’t turn normal then yes take off belt to make sure it’s not a pulley or accessory that’s seized. And yes most engines turn clockwise
So, I only had a regular socket wrench but I was able to turn it from the bottom. It took a little effort and strength but it turns. Also, I was able to hot wire the starter to the battery with a long jumper wire and it clicked once like before. I was having intermitted starting issues before a big rain storm came through Vegas. I was worried it locked up after driving through a flood. However, it started a few times after the flood for about an hour and ran like it did before the flood. Then all of a sudden click and that was it and had to get it towed. I'm going to change the starter today just was hoping for your feedback? Thanks and great video! Subscribed and liked!

Thanks for the video. Is there any other reason the crankshaft wouldn’t turn? Say if the belt is still on, there could be a bad accessory locking the belt in place (such as power steering pump)

This sounds like you have a problem with the transmission selector lever. When you put it in park it’s probably not it park on the transmission. It would have to be adjusted depending on what vehicle you have.

Try turning crank by hand if spark plugs are easy to remove take them out than turn engine by hand see if it’s binding anywhere

Sounds like the pistons are hitting to valves, something is not right
When you crank the pulley does the to see if the engine is seized do you have to have it up on a lift?
No, most vehicles you can do it from the top.
This just gave me a different outlook on my situation. I have a 2016 Kia optima that was apart of the recall but they never informed me of the recall when I brought the car. Said they never had my information but sent me warranty papers about the fuel pump in the car months later. Problem I have is, my engine locked up with oil in it and it still has oil in it, no leakage almost a year later. No clear indicator on why it locked up. Now I think my fuel pump went bad and I could get that fixed by Kia but my engine will still be locked up. I need some suggestions on where to start to get a real diagnosis for the whole car and not just the engine is locked up.
That engine is in a recall, I made a video on that engine. They should replace the engine for free. It has nothing to do with the fuel pump.
@@Motorcarnut they won’t. I never received the paperwork before the due date and they never informed me of the recall so I’m on my own with trying to figure it.
@@Motorcarnut the only thing they sent me was a warranty for the fuel pump and seatbelts. When I called to tell them, they said I called too late and it was nothing they can do. But my engine has internal recalls that I had no clue about. No lawyers want to take the case so I’m stuck

@@Queenpoohmom I have a 2013 Kia, it doesn’t matter how long it been or if you just brought that car a week ago, Kia is supposed too cover that recall no matter what. Long as you have proof of all oil changes that was done too it so they can see that the car was maintained they will fix the engine for you
Hey..can a scrape on the valve stem cause the engine to be seized? I have a D16 A engine. Recently i take off the head, clean and grind the face of the valves but on 2 of the stems had a Little dent on them close to the top. Those dent was cause by me,using a players. However I fitted back the engine but won’t get the engine to crank. The starter work fine before I did any work to the engine and the sound it’s making is like a bad starter
If the valve is sticking, it can cause interference and the piston can hit the valve, but try turning the crank by hand and see if it turns smoothly, if it doesn't then its hitting if it does then its probably the starter or bad ground.
My brother had a 2013 genesis we put a new battery in it sometimes it turns real slow but then sometimes just clicks could it be an electrical issue or seized motor?
Sounds like an electrical issue. Check grounds and tight connections between battery and starter.
I have a 2011 v6 Camaro. For the longest my car would do this but after 1-2 tries it would start. Today it’s not starting and only clicking. About to get a starter later today and see if it fixes it

@@Motorcarnut I changed out the starter. It was 100% the problem. The spindle would come out of the casing (which is what the click noise was) but it wouldn’t spin. Hopefully the comment helps anyone else in the future that has a similar issue

having that no crank or start issue on my car i was suddenly driving down road and car lost all power not sure if that's engine seizing ? but forsure i tried rotate the crank can't turn it but car turned on when i replaced the starter ? but idled for bit then died off and never turned on again crank pulley not able to turn it over but they're are moments when it wants crank over what could be issue ? i tried a day ago and it started smoke and smell like burn could that be because the engine is siezed ?
If you can’t crank it over by hand then it does sound like it’s seized. The starter motor could be going if it turns over fairly easy by hand.
if i crank it counter clockwise ever just the smallest bit, it will then crank clockwise limitless, and will crank until i stop, but if i electrically crank it after it’ll crank and then does the click? what could this be

Oh boy, that doesn’t sound good. You should have the car towed to a mechanic.
So driving the other day my car stops, I go into a panic but I know I stay on top of maintenance, but I needed an oil change. I tried to restart it and boom, smoke. (Holy wtf) I called my mechanic he comes. We check the oil, it’s a bit low but still has oil, then we turn the flywheel, a little resistance but not anything drastic. Then he looks at the starter and I had a bad ground on the starter and he says “it may be the starter” so he takes it off. This damn thing was fried, and the same smell is what I smelled with the burning smell. The starter comes in Tuesday and we’re gonna slap it in and do an oil change, I’ll let you know. Great advise

I have an infinity qx60 had this problem. Dealer said engine was locked up. I can turn it so I tried to crank and realized the starter was smoking. We changed the starter and now it turns over with ignition but won’t crank.

I just rebuilded a 99-07 4.8l gm engine and the engine seems to be seized it turns but it is very very hard, freshly rebuild and even jumó starting the car doesn’t help
If you can, take out all the spark plugs so there’s no compression and try cranking it by hand with a wrench and see if you feel binding anywhere. It should turn with little effort and be consistently smooth throughout the revolution
So, we needed to get an oil change. We changed the oil, and then started to hear clicking. We got a new battery as well and started to see my battery drain. We took it for a small drive in the neighborhood and it stopped. The lights were dim, the battery had less power and now we hear clicking. Is our engine seized, or can we rebuild the engine? Or do we need to replace the starter? We have parts to rebuild the engine-if need to. We have a 2010 Saturn Outlook XE.
Sounds like a bad alternator, did you have that checked? You can check if the engine is seized by putting a breaker bar as shown in the video and crank it clockwise with your hand. If it moves with some resistance it’s not seized.
If you have a no start no crank situation, and you know it's not the battery, and suspect it's the starter how can I determine whether it's the starter or not when on the side of the road? Say I was driving in the car just cut off and it's not out of fuel and battery is good.
You can try banging the starter, if it starts then you know it's the starter, but sometimes that doesn't work. Check starter relay for clicking or the starter itself, ignition switch could be faulty as well. If like you said battery etc. are good that its the starter

Can be the starter is going, or you have a bad or loose ground? Usually when they get hot they show signs of failure.
Help please! I have a 2011 bmw 328i and the engine turns over for a second but doesn’t start, When using the breaker bar to turn the engine over The engine turns but with force so it’s not completely locked if that make sense. It just takes force to turn it. What could this mean?
Try taking sparkling water plugs out and then crank by hand to see if anything is binding.
Would this also work if the original problem was a broken timing belt? I'm trying to figure out if my valves are bent or not (2001 Honda Civic)
Well, the crank may turn but will hit the valves and may give a false reading that the crankshaft is seized when it’s actually not.

Well you can, but if an accessory like alternator or ac compressor is seized it will be hard to tell which one.
If anything, cut the belt so you know if the crankshaft doesn’t turn you know it’s bad news.

Starter sounds a little different with my 14 mustang gt when I try and crank. I checked dip stick yesterday and there was oil initially but after I wiped and dipped it back in there was nothing. Is there anyway I can send you a video of the sound my starter is making

I have a 2015 dodge charger and it was leaking oil but i continued to drive it and then it started ticking and the car stopped while i was driving. It still turns on but won’t start and won’t allow me to change gears. Could this mean the engine is locked up?
Grab a breaker bar and put it on the crankshaft and try turning it by hand clockwise, if it turns it’s not locked.
Mines make the same sound but i got oil in mines, i was driving when mines cut off but normally when that happens i would wiggle the cables that's connected to the battery an it would crank but this last time it wouldn't? What yo think? I was told its a 60% chance it can be a starter solenoid
Wiggling wires is no good, have to take care of that bad connection first, that may be your problem right there

Yep, can easily be a bad or loose wiring issue , make sure ground wires are tight as well.

When I turn on my truck it cranks very very slow n stops I know it’s nothing electrical bc I was burning out the day before could it be seized too? I got money saved up for a 6.0 swap but if the engine is saveable I’d much rather go that way
You have to try and turn the crankshaft by hand and see if it’s turns over with not that much resistance.
07 Honda Accord Ex 6cyl. I think my engine might be seized, it did the same thing when you tried to turn it on. I’ve replaced the starter and alternator still no luck. Battery’s still good it’s just won’t start.
If you did try turning it by hand with a wrench on the crank and it don't turn then yes it's probably seized.

What can be happening is the engine was probably partially seized and now it got worse. Even if the starter was engaged it would still be able to turn by hand. Mechanic is probably right I’m afraid.
Could be starter or CCA amps in battery
The video is to tell if it’s not, battery is secondary to mechanical failure.
I just changed knock sensors on a 2004 sienna. Was starting fine before installation. Im Positive nothing fell into the intake since i accounted every nut bolt, washer etc.... Makes this exact same noise. Is it plausible something did fall in? Or did I do something incorrectly?

Just did the pulley test and it turns. And when I went to try to start it actually tried to start but then went back to that noise. Could it possibly be hydrolocked? Failed to mention when I removed manifold cover there was still coolant (pops said he drained it already) and it more then likely seeped into the intake. What do you suggest my next steps may be?
What noise are you referring to? If the engine was running before the repair recheck your work and why did you change knock sensors for?
Coolant had gotten into the lower manifold when getting to knock sesors. So we kept turning the crank until we heard most of it seep out into the pan. Then left if for a few days to dry out. Flushed rest of the Coolant and replaced oil and she fired right back up.
Had to change out knock sensors cause they were bad. The van was sitting for well over a decade. Hopefully we'll get another 200k miles off if her.
The noise I was referring to was at 0:45
My son was driving his 07 Infiniti m35x and said it died and he lost power steering etc. Couldn't get it to restart. Has P0340 active and P0335 and P0345 pending. When I hit the start button it does just like what you illustrate here. Starter engages and just everything electrical draws down hard and it does not crank. Ratchet on the crank and I cannot make it budge even a mm. I tried it with jumper cables on the battery and no different, starter was replaced a couple months ago.
I think I am screwed 😭

It shouldn't be the hard to find? The front bottom of engine with big pulley is connected to the crankshaft.
2019 dodge challenger. I just drove through a foot of water and my car stopped. The water came up to the bottom of the door seal and didn’t sit in any water more than two minutes. But I’m getting that pop sound when I turn my key over. What do I do? All electrical parts are working.

Anything could have happened. Bent rods even it cylinders are dry water did get into engine.
can an engine seize if the car has sat in the driveway for 11 months and never started up ?
i just put in a brand new battery, voltage is good 12.4+ , radio works, headlights etc , but there is no sound when trying to start, no clicking or that sound like in your video

What you can do to see if it’s seized or maybe the starter or something is to try a put a wrench on the crankshaft bolt and see it the engine turns clockwise with not much effort if it does then it could be the starter or wiring to it.
Did you check the starter and ignition fuses and relays ?
No need, went straight to the crank based on the customer’s complaint.
What if it only turns about 45°? is it locked up?
Sounds like pistons are hitting the valves or connecting rod broke and jamming up somewhere.
Hey man my problem is I drove for about 15mins my engine was overheating (did put water in before I drove) but when I got to my destination I lost complete power and now it makes this weird sound when trying to start but doesn't start any tips
Maybe a bad battery? Or bad ground connection? Try putting a wrench on the crank like I explained and see if it turns by have.

Kia engine GDi is seized locked. but when I take my spark plugs completely out the cranks just fine no knock or rattle and cranks about the same cranking speed. why is this?

I honestly feel like I have a very stupid question. I have an old 1983 Datsun 280ZX that I am trying to get together. This vehicle has not been turned on for about 2 years at least. I need to check that the engine can turn and it is not stuck (not sure what to call it). I went to check if the engine would turn from the crank shift pulley but to I noticed that the bold is missing. Can this be replaced?
Yes, it’s called a crankshaft bolt. And you’re checking to see if the engine is seized. If you can get underneath the car try putting a crowbar on the flywheel and try to turn the engine clockwise from there.

You probably have an accessory like ac compressor or alternator that is locked up.

Yes, its probably the power steering pump pulley if your vehicle isn’t electronic steering

Because, that’s the easiest way. Some can’t rebuild an engine only take one out and put another in. If you can’t do it yourself then your stuck with engine replacement.

You can try to get a 1/2 ratchet and extension on the center crankshaft bolt and see if the engine turns fairly easy, if it doesn't it's seized if it does it's probably the starter, relay or the wiring to it.
Show how to unseize and engine that can be freed
You have to rebuild the engine. You can’t just un seize it.
What if it just clicks? On a 2013 impala lt I woke up to go to the store and it just suddenly won’t start it was working at first fine
That sounds like a stater going. Next time it won't start try hitting the starter with a hammer, not too hard, if it starts its bad.
@@Motorcarnut just changed it a year ago my mechanic did the test on it now I have a ground wired to the ignition… I use the key turn it on and jump out pop the hood and spark the ground to the positive side of the battery so I’m guessing the it’s something that’s not giving the ignition enough juice

@@Motorcarnut quick question if you don’t mind I have a 3 cabled push start button that holds 50 amps I looked online and it said use a 6-8 gauge for the wiring but mechanic is saying an 14-18 gauge is just fine but I also think he is the one that messed with it in the first place I woke up one morning and it just stopped working out of nowhere and when he grounded the ignition he left me thermostat sensor was unplugged idk who to trust I just want to go to school so nobody will have to work on my cars but me
Bring it back to him, probably did mess it up. I didn’t know that, was assuming no one did anything to the vehicle.
Please where you? I have a 2012 Hyundai Accent, just registered in July 2023. There is enough engine oil in it, but it refuses to crack, roll or start now. The starter had been checked ok. I read something about crankshaft sensor could be one of the reasons for crankshaft lock. What is your position on this? I asked for your location, possibly you could help repair instead considering engine replacement.

If the starter was jammed in the flywheel the engine would still turn over by hand.

If it’s seized will it turn over a little bit? Sounds like my engine isn’t getting enough power but sounds like a bad starter. It will turn over though if I feed it a little gas, just runs awful

Can it be just the alternator
Good question, if the alternator was locked or or any other accessories for that matter can make it feel as though the engine is seized. that's why you remove and serpentine or drive belts from the engine before trying to turn the crank.

My 2015 Dodge Challenger shut off after driving through a large deceiving puddle. I had some water in the lower intake manifold… I’ve siphoned the majority out.. & replaced filters. battery good… & when I try to start it makes the same one click… the only difference is the click in the video is a bit more louder/aggressive…

Well you could just check the starter like a mentioned or it could be hydro locked ( engine seized). Try turning the crankshaft by hand with a breaker bar

.i changed the VVT.
And now it won't start. I hope it's just a starter that I have 2. Change And not the engine.

If you can turn it by hand with a breaker bar, it’s not seized.
Got a buick with the series 2 3800 motor. Odd. It died on me on way home and won't crank at all.
Make sure it’s not an electrical problem first.
@@Motorcarnut it ended up being worse than I expected. Pulled spark plug from cylinder 5 and coolant poured out. Radiator was half empty so motor is pretty much toast.
Blown head gasket. These engines are very durable, maybe it’s salvageable?
I have a 2011 GMC Acadia shuts off while I was driving find out no oil though it was the battery change battery still not working do u think I lock my motor or is it the oil pump or starter my trunk won't open
If it shut off because of no oil that can mean it did seize, but I would have someone local confirm that.

Have someone try to turn the crankshaft bolt with a breaker bar by hand clockwise, it should turn over if not its' locked and no good.

If you had no oil in the car and it’s still fine, that’s great, but the computer is a different problem then.
My 2005 Chevy Silverado is doing what the car in this video is doing. It moves freely when turning the crank shaft so I assumed it was the starter so I removed and tested at home and it worked fine, thinking maybe my test was faulty so i took it to auto zone and it tested fine. But know I'm confused as why I can't get my truck to start .
2004 dodge ram 1500 5.7 is doing the same thing it'll click then nothing all the PRNDL are selected or highlighted also.
I’m assuming the truck is not cranking correct? If so could be a bad starter relay, bad ground or even a bad ignition switch
@@Motorcarnut correct, no crank, more like one clunk, no start... and its a hard clunk that you can feel , seems like its coming from the flywheel. Thanks for responding sir! I'm actually in the process of troubleshooting right now and will check what you suggested. I'm I LA and its scorching right now, had to come inside as i was sweating buckets and everything was getting to hot to touch! ha ha
Wow, sure does sound like it’s the starter but check for corrosive wiring as well.

Most of the times, yes. Sometimes it will have a severe drag meaning it's just about to lock up, which is bad as well.

Ok the first thing you want to do is...check for engine oil, if there none, yank the engine. There is oil? Good. Get access to the starter, tap it lightly while someone tries to start. That's it!
Not really that cut and dry. Tapping the starter doesn’t mean anything, could be bad wiring or fuse etc.
@@Motorcarnut Obviously, but you gotta start somewhere. I did that and I didnt have to check wiring, fuses, relays, faulty ECM's ect ect...I've built a few cars.

To me the would indicate the pistons are probably hitting the valves, if the engine isn’t running.
Its not running we took the starter of but didnt help the motor is stuck ands spins just the 45decrees back and the other way
Again, sounds like something is binding or hitting valves.
I had my engine by a cousin that said he knew how to rebuild it. I got all the machine work done bored 30 over, master kit in it. Before we put that in it was hard to turn, but it did start. I haven’t ran the truck yet because it wouldn’t stay running, the carburetor I’m going to rebuild, and change fuel pump since the gas was dirty. This truck is a 1972 Ford that had sat for years.
