  • Hello there lovebug. Can Booktube ruin reading?
I recently watched a video (4 times) that I suggest you check out. That video is linked below...

While watching it, I scrolled through the comments and saw such a common thread of people on here feeling overwhelmed/less than due to watching other booktubers who read over 100 books a year or who are only checking out new releases.
Booktube has been a beautiful experience for me and I wanted to share to anyone who needs to hear it that whatever you read is enough. Some of us really want to hear about older/ backlisted/ looked over books.
I hope you enjoy or take something from this. No matter what, please allow yourself to only read books that you personally are excited about. Lots of love to you. Thanks so much for being here!

I watched that video too! I think booktube can ruin reading if people let it. Sometimes I can only read 4 books a month and if I compare myself to others, that's quit low, but in the grand scope of life, most people don't even read 12 books a year, LOL. It doesn't matter how many books people read. As long as people are reading and love doing it, it doesn't matter how many or what kind of books they're talking about. I do feel that pressure to read new releases. Sometimes it's fun because then I can listen to others takes on the same book I read. Other times, I'm not interested in it and now choose to not read them. I enjoy hearing about what others are reading, especially if they're older, more obscure books that no one else is going to talk about. And I have loads of books that are "out of fashion" right now to read, LOL, but I'll still read them because I'm genuinely interested in them. I'm glad you're talking about this because I hope everyone is reading what they really want to read! Booktube should be fun!

Absolutely 100% to all of this! I think the more likely we are to let what other people are doing dictate what we think we should be doing, we are destined to be trying to keep up. And a lot of these reading goals just don't work for the average person! I LOVE how much people are able to read on here and the second I was able to categorize it as a "That's them, this is me." I felt a whole lot more complete here in this space!
It was so wild to see how many people there felt like that though. It truly was eye opening! I'm so so glad you are also able to disconnect from that. I've been here since 2019 so it has gotten a bit easier for me. But several times I've had to just step away because I simply didn't feel like enough. I'm glad you're here and reading older books too🎉❤

I love how open minded you are about this! I'm totally guilty of only reading stuff that is popular or that I know will get views/likes. I read 15-20 books a month, but I also don't have kids and have time to read at my job frequently. Great video!

Omgsh, thank you so much, Laura!
I'm glad you said that about reading stuff that is popular or that you know will get views and likes because THAT IS AWESOME!!
We need people doing that, obviously, and everyone on here wants to get clicks and likes, so you are guilty of nothing ❤️
I will one day get to read 15 to 20 books in a month too and I will be proud of it so I am truly jealous! Thank you again for stopping by, we are all doing great❤️

Omg Emily! This is exactly how I've been feeling. I've been struggling a lot with where I fit in with booktube. I love the creativity aspect and chatting about books, but the pressure to keep up or I'm not doing enough is so overwhelming. I've been feeling a lot of burnout from booktube and have been thinking a lot about how I want to change my approach in the new year to slow down and remember why i started a booktube channel in the first place.
Thank you so much for sharing your perspective and continuing the discussion.

Omgsh I never would have thought you felt this way, too! Thanks for saying this ❤
I'm trying to figure it out myself too. Like making specific goals that have nothing to do with how many books I read. I wish you luck and I haven't been able to keep up with everyone's reading progress these last several weeks but I love your channel and your content and the books you talk about and know that I will love it just as much no matter how many or how new the books are you read 🫶🫶🫶

Totally agree!! 🙏🏻 honestly that’s why I’ve taken a step back from making content and want to focus on connecting with people again without feeling the pressure to keep up with trendy things 😹 I’ve always been a granny inside so it makes sense to read old books! 😍 hope your knitting is going well! 💗🧶

Omgsh that's what I love about your channel! It feels like stepping inside an old soul's home. I love hearing you talking about knitting and watching your scary movies and all of your different interests.
It can be so hard to not feel like we aren't doing it right when we see the super popular people doing it a different way but it's so important for us to embrace who we are and where we are. That's what I love about this place ❤ I'm glad you're here

Knitting is going fantastic! I have some holes in my scarf lol but it's perfectly imperfect and my first one and I love it anyhow! I'll eventually strive for perfection but for now I'm just enjoying the journey with it ❤

Ohhh, i am going to watch the video you mentioned as soon as i finish yours!!! It's such an interesting discussion!!!
I tend to get that "less than" feeling when i see book haul videos or "go book shopping with me" videos being popularized over all other kinds of booktube content! It makes me feel sometimes like we prioritize just showing off stuff over the hobby of reading itself! Ugh, it's so tough, though, because i have done book hauls myself, so i obviously am not perfect too 😅
I also LOVEEEE how positive you are examining this topic!!!!
8:53 OMG i just had this experience where i randomly clicked on a booktube video of someone who reads nonfiction historical books and it ABSOLUTELY flooooored me because she talked about several books that i would never in a million years have picked up and got me so interested in a subject (history lol!) that i always felt i had no interest in!!! (It was from a booktuber named Jennifer Brooks and the video was "historical nonfiction you should read"....i dont even know ehat made me click on it i think i was just kind of mind blown by that title because in a niche filled with fourth wing and colleen hoover thumbnails i was like WHO IS THIS beautiful unique lady just gracing booktube with something DIFFERENT!!!) 😅
I think this is how i feel reading Agatha Christie too like her books are not the hot new releases and i dont know if anyone is interested in my talking about it but these kinds of softer (less like traumatic/graphic) mysteries is what im feeling drawn too so im trying to honor that and follow it! Also i am making a goal for myself to read more middle grade and graphic novels in the new year because this is one way i KNOW joining booktube has swayed me because i feel most people wouldn't care about these genres. Im promising myself that I'll read more of this stuff in the new year even if i dont make a video about it!

@mikalareads I love your huge book comments it just takes me forever to fully appreciate and acknowledge each one! I love your excitement with every word and can't wait to read everything and go find the video you're talking about with the historical Fiction!

    • @mynameisemilygood
      @mynameisemilygood  10 месяцев назад

Yess omgsh DEFINITELY watch the video! I really appreciated it a lot and loved hearing the topic being spoken about the way she did it. You have done your unpopular opinions, and it's kind of the same except for it all being talked about from the creator side of it versus the reader side!
Okay, and no one should ever feel less than on here, but you definitely definitely shouldn't. The content you make is so clickable and watchable until the end and holds so much value every time. Honestly, I love to watch the shopping videos sometimes because I pretend it's me doing it. But then I look at my bookshelves in my 700 square foot home, and I'm like... where would these go?
Not only that but we both have talked about this that it doesn't make us feel good to have a bunch of books that we haven't even read therefore we don't even know if we like them! Some books just aren't worth being reread, and when that's the case and now you've spent $28 on the book, it's just an all-around bummer.
I will absolutely be heading over to Jennifer Brooks' channel after this and watching that video. I have read a few historical fiction, and I swear they are almost always good. It's so fascinating the way a real-life event can be woven into a super amusing story! Would love to see that from you if you end up enjoying it!
There is another girl on here who pretty much talks about nonfiction books and omg I can't remember her name right this second but luckily she has become super popular and she is almost always posting books you're not hearing about anywhere else. I admire that and am inspired by that so much!
Omgsh you read that Middlegrade and graphic novels! I think there is a huge group of people who are interested in that it's just obviously going to be a different group than the ones who are already in your audience reading horror and thrillers! I think it would be wonderful to incorporate some of that! Maybe like after you read several of each making recommendations for people who are into horror or thrillers but want something less intense? I totally think it could be seamlessly incorporated if that's what you become into!
I am so into cozy older books right now lol I truly think this winter/pregnancy I am turning into an old lady who just needs comforted so I am just going with that!
You are always authentic and passionate and whatever you read and love you will have an audience happily watching it 💗💗💗
      There's my novel!
