What a thrill it must have been for 1935 audiences discovering this incredibly charismatic new actor, Errol Flynn! I love this movie and the fascinating backstory of its making. This was the first major role for Flynn. At the start of fliming he was petrified, literally shaking as he delivered his lines. There was even talk about replacing him. But as it went along he relaxed, gaining so much confidence that they reshot a lot of earlier scenes for continuity,,, and the rest is cinema history!

Fantastic film…wonderful story line & Errol’s portrayal of Captain Blood was outstanding. From a highly educated physician taken into slavery, sold for 10 lbs.Made a harrowing escape & became the greatest pirate on the Caribbean. His heroic measures defending England against the French, allowed him to be Governor of Port Royal, How exciting, thrilling & a great love story as well. Only Errol could give this part the justice that it deserves.

A wonderful movie. Old movies from the 30's 40's 50's have been a large part of the history of cinema. Captain Blood is not only a really good hollywood production but also an extremely interesting movie with a well known cast, including the movie legend errol flynn and the well remembered olivia de havilland. a true classic!

And don't forget Basil Rathbone, at his absolute peak as the evil French pirate! Without his brief part in it, this movie would be much less than it is. I'm sure he has been the model for Capt Hook ever since.

If only Errol Flynn's life lived up to the characters he played, how different the outcome for his posterity!

My ancestors were pirates - privateers during the American Rev. Their ship was called the "Jolly Robins"!!. how about that?

Thanks. So often these things are put together with pop tunes or rock music which just isn't appropriate. For someone like Errol Flynn you need music with an epic, heroic quality; hopefully Vangelis' Conquest of Paradise fits the images shown here.

@Mangasakka It is also known that in many cases, if a slave ship came under pirate authority, the slaves were given the choice to join the crew or be sold. Most joined. In fact, Pirate crews were often extremely multi-racial :)

Captain Blood (or the book, at any rate) basically took a bunch of stuff from two true stories and changed the names (well, aside from the romance plot and the final battle, which as far as I know is pretty much all made up). Blood's backstory is based on Henry Pitman, who was an actual doctor who was sentenced to slavery in Barbados for treating rebels and escaped. Blood's career as a pirate is heavily based on that of the buccaneer Henry Morgan.

Based on a true story of Henry Pitman, a doctor who got caught up in the Monmouth Rebellion 1685. Transported as a slave to the West Indies he and 6 others escaped, fell in with some pirates, rapidly fell out with them but did eventually return to the UK, by which time James II had been overthrown- not quite as dramatic as the film but there you go!
