I never knew there was a video for this song until now. This is one of my favourite R.E.M. albums
I've never seen the video either, and I've listened to this album countless times
MTV was probably focusing on the boy bands by then?
e bow the letter its a great song of this album
Best experienced while driving through the West 🎸 🥁 🎤 🎸
"Point my nose to the northern star and watch the decline from a hazy distance" , that lyric always grabbed me......
Greatest lyrics.
For my sins I haven't listened to this great album for ages, beautiful perfect music.
The day R.E.M. ended was a sad day, but the music is here forever, thank you R.E.M.
The real sad day is when Bill Berry left the band.
New Adventures is so underrated...
The best album for mi
no, it's not. it's their second best album. youtube views will never be able to tell if something is underrated or not. even though 200,000 during 9 years in this case is unexplainable.
I love this song. E-Bow the Letter is arguably REM'S best. Electrolite is wonderful, So Fast So Numb is also good. Maybe Low Desert as well. But the rest is pretty much garbage in my view.
I never got that impression about the album ....it was and is up there in there best work.
yr so right. it might be the most hated album by a beloved artist. so many REM fans don't like this one, but I would take it over any other 90s REM record. For me, this is their very best, followed by Fables of the Reconstruction. It's such a cool, fucked up, raw, beautiful album. I have the CD single of E-Bow the Letter, which has an alternate version of Departure, and I can't tell which one I like better, the single version or the album one. But with the alt version of "Leave," it's not even close. The album version of "Leave" is my fav REM song ever. This one is not far behind. The first time I heard the record I HATED this song. It took me a long time to hear what it was, cuz Stipe's vocal is pretty subtle and slithery. And the out of tune piano stuff...I had no idea what the fuck was going on. But now I think it's brilliant.
Music that crosses genres is impressive.
all bands are multigenre
Imagine being able to go back in time, listening to this album from start to finish again, good times.
Wow ty for this comment.......this album IS my freshman year of college. The first semester of my college life was by far the happiest time of my life, I woke up free from fear and anxiety and perfectly fulfilled. I believe that for that short time I was truly self-actualized. My beyond words adored beautiful baby butterfly Ava Isabella is in her second week of college at Clemson here in South Carolina......can anyone say National Champions? She absolutely loves it and I pray that she will soak up every perfect second of these four years that will change and shape her life more than any other thing in her world, ever. I love you more every single minute my angel, my sweet amazing love and KiKi's beautiful baby butterfly forever 🦋.
As with every R.E.M. album played through, I am simultaneously in the present moment and in the time & place I experienced it for the first time🎯 for this one, it’s sophomore year of university in L.A.
my first CD bought in age of 15..... Monster before was just on tape. And new adventures in Hi-Fi started with this masterpiece.
The greatest R.E.M. album no contest.
For me, it's second only to Life's Rich Pageant. LRP is perfect and in my top 5 albums that I would take with me to a desert island for the rest of my days.
It doesn't really matter.
They have the best Playlist.
nah
Many of the songs on New Adventures have an underlying sense of sadness to me, and this is no exception. One of my favorite REM songs for many years.
It's the restraint versus intensity. Mastery starts with control.
I never thought about the fact that Peter Buck is the one playing bass here
New Adventures is easily my fave REM album, and all of their albums are great.
I wouldn't panic if anyone thinks it's not their favourite it's about the Listener. I bought it on release and for me a great piece of work....
Except for Around the Sun and Reveal. Not good.
This album is #2 for me, and I am a seasoned veteran of REM at age 45. It is only topped by Life's Rich Pageant. If you don't own It buy it today and you will thank me. And today is my birthday....... so do it for me!
Bueno, el reveal no es tan malo, para mí es peor el collapse in the now@@davidbowman4259
@@davidbowman4259 Around the Sun is their only legitimate dud imo. There's only one or two solid songs on it.
I miss REM. Very favorite band
Me too
How the west was won comes into my mind often. Where did it get us other than this amazing song?
In the current mess of what is now the world. What the message of song is. NOTICE how they covered up the word "Available" at the end? That would be humanity. Wake up sleepers!
What a amazing album! This record it’s so important for the band: the last bill berry’s album, last album for the manager Jefferson Holt, last work of production from Scott Litt and if you notice Bill Berry is the last person in the video on screen!
Yo siempre pensé que REM dejo de ser REM cuando se fue Bill
TOTALMENTE , BB PONIA LOS ACENTOS A LAS CANCIONES DE REM@@chowchownegro
@@ThisIsAcosta lastimosamente.....
Fantastic collection with no filler track. Don't understand why none of these great songs never get any airplay all these years on even the better album-oriented rock stations. of course by now, I like many other music lovers have dropped FM radio completely.
This was the first CD I ever bought. I'd almost forgotten about this song!
best album. I got all songs in my mind. the story of my life ....
I dont miss them, I watch them everyday thank you youtube. ❤❤❤❤
EXACTO, lo que yo quisiera es verlos en vivo, pero los conciertos están en el RUclips
Una banda legendaria.
The squirrel seemed to be enjoying the music! Great song, one of my faves. :)
The intro just came to my head after not hearing this in over 20 years!
whole record is superb!!
Agreed! Absolutely brilliant album. ❤
This is such a great record. Not sure how it got missed by so many ears
One word, RADIO. I TURNED THE RADIO ON,1st time in a year, guess what was on- BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY I turned it off and almost PUKED!!
because the Monster album was a horrible one
soft, delicate and raw...
It's Thom York of Radioheads favorite album. My favorite was Out of Time but this album grows on you the more you hear it.
Funny I was just thinking about Thom's line - infrastructure will collapse... I really loved this whole recording and Radiohead too. I had just bought a new car with a cd player and this stayed in for a long time.
Mi favorito es el Automatic for The people y el Monster......aunque el Out of Time también es genial
"I did'nt wear glasses 'coz i thought it might rain, now i can't see anything" reminds me of my best friend chris who did the same thing.... and said the same thing years before this came out........ i miss you chris
keyboard`s sample - simple & genius!!! Love it!
that piano solo...
AWESOME
R.E.M. NEVER DIES
Mike magistral je n'ai plus de mots pour le décrire et. toujours cette voie sublime 👍👍🥰🥰🥰
Uma excelente música de abertura para o melhor álbum da discografia do R.E.M "New adventures in hi fi"
Best song
Beautiful and such a crazy earworm
Wish I could have seen them play live before they decided to disband. It’s one of my favorite bands ever so glad they put out their two live albums at least I’ll be able to listen and pretend I’m watching them live.
I always loved this song, top tier REM. The less is more moody lounge vibe is perfect with Bill's drumming and Michael's sardonic downbeat vocal. I always felt the next record Up consisted mostly of less effective deployments of this idea, like they repeated the vibe but forgot the less is more bit
Those timbers!! The drums just run through this tune non stop, layers of piano & amazing vocal 🔊🔊🔊❤
God I miss music videos as an art form...
Love it.
Disco perfeito sem sombra de dúvida o Melhor de R.E.M.O mais bem trabalhado e produzido Perfeito.
What can you say? Absolutely superb album, Simples!
My favourite REM album ... saw them on the 'Green' tour and a few time later .... this album is a magnificent
New Adventures is their best album with Fables of the Reconstruction behind by a nose.
Another beautiful one. Michael so young and gorgeous as usual. Eith love Danielle xxx
Jajjajajja, si.........Stipe de joven era insuperable........
I'm mostly a pre Out of Time fan. But imo this album here is their masterpiece.
Jon Phillips, it's always been my favourite REM album, love every track!
New adventures & automatic so much quality on these 2 albums R.E.M. at their best.
Love this track, and the Les Dawson inspired piano solo (look him up kids) 😁
Brilliant album from a band at the peak of their powers
@Paul Mollon What has this song got to do with Les Dawson? I am just curious
@@julliard Les Dawson, British comedian known for his off key piano paying and the piano solo in this song reminds me of him 😄
@@paulmollon9282 I remember Les Dawson. He was a brilliant comedian. I forgot that he also played the piano.
New Adventures...............an album to hear driving at the night
Let's mix Automatic up with some Monster. Result = New Adventures In Hifi! And what an opening track...... Fab video, looks great in HD 🎞🔥💿
Exacto, exacto 🎉
I think that this album is really underrated...ok after Automatic For The People it was hard to have the same success, but success isn't everything, and the quality of the tracks inside NAIHF is impeccable.
This song is sooo original.
Michael Stipe es la cosa más hermosa que jamás veré.
You're gorgeous dear 😍💞
Well, just wait until you set your FIERY EYES ON ME Lady Love! Because you haven't seen ANYTHING - YET! 😜
@@porkulate omg............ that was so unnecessary
@@gwendolyn0515 And WHO ARE YOU again? The arbiter of what is and is not 'necessary'? Alas, I must have missed your press release to that effect! MYOB Poke Chop! 🥴🤪🥵🤬
I love this album ❤️
"I made a mistake/Chalked it up to design" - Well, that's pretty much the story of life, isn't it?
Hi, could you explain this verse? it is very difficult for me (i’m not an english native)
Bye guy's! fun whilst it lasted!
Under-rated album
Love the song. Great opener to the album. But I feel like they had no idea what to do for a video for it, and so they did this.
O no?
A huevo!
too beautiful
I keep thinking he's gonna say "aaah don't know" be he just says "aaaaa"
Elegante, sexy y nocturna. Masterclass.
The vibe and music reminds me of Talk Talk's Spirit of Eden album.
New HD version!!!
If Rad’s teacher is reading this: you better give Rad the best grade or else
I think Bill Berry, in his head, had already left the band.
che canzone sublime
turn it up sit your ass back and enjoy the ride
i forgot just how much of a left turn this album was for the band and then i remembered murmur was a tangent for all of modern music in '83.
Clever
Their best album
Blood from a stone
Water from wine
Born under earplay design
A stroke of bad luck,
Wrong place, wrong time
This flyer is out of the lime
The story is a sad one, told many times
The story of my life in trying times
Just add water, stir in lime
How the west was won and where it got us
Canary got trapped, the uranium mine
A stroke of bad luck, now the bird has died
A marker to mark where my tears run dry
I cross it, bless it, alkali
The story is a sad one, told many times
The story of my life in trying times
Just add water, stir in lime
How the west was won and where it got us
I didn't wear glasses cause I thought it might rain
Now I can't see anything
I made a mistake, chalked it up to design
I cracked through time, space, Godless and dry
I point my nose to the northern star,
Watch the decline from a hazy distance
The story is a sad one, told many times
The story of my life in trying times
Just add water, stir in lime
How the west was won and where it got us.
Nice one john.👍
what only 427 views?
it deserves millions!
274 million now

I have a major hetero man crush on Peter in this vid!! Great song, and the video is pure understated brilliance.
I miss R.E.M...
OOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!! :)
love it
Watch the decline from a hazy distance...forever relevant lyric
the last great album on REM in my opinion
has anyone but me ever connected the guitar hook to Light My Fire by The Doors and now also the vibe part from Somebody I used To Know by Gotye??
Lyrics, please...Love you guys!

It's like he's channeling David Gilmour from the Momentary Lapse era. "Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies, tongue tied and twisted, just an earth bound misfit".
