Seeing those Gollum things stuck like that at the end I thought to myself "Now this is just begging for a musical parody." And you delivered. Thank you.
Whats with indie developers and not knowing something as basic as the way a flashlight works. Man if they created the universe then Earth would have no light because the suns light would be unable to reach Earth. I feel like most indie horror devs need to live in a dark room with a flashlight for a week to figure out the way those work.
The shitty flashlight is supposed to make it "scary", since the reduced visibility is supposed to add to a sense of helplessness and mystery, ala Silent Hill's fog or Doom 3's dark areas. With these games, though, it's more annoying than scary, since the games usually have poor atmosphere, and the blatant "that's not how that works" reaction only pulls the player further out of the experience.
+Pierce Chang Actually, I imagine it's just too much work to code your own, so these developers just use a pre-existing flashlight animation. A pre-existing flashlight animation that sucks major sphincter.
"Now we're going to jump on these floating cocaine boxes" - Congrats Jim, I believe that's the first time any human has said those words in that order aloud
theres no way this is source engine. i work with source on a daily basis and those lens flares you see on everything would be impossible without a big reworking of the engine. i doubt these devs put that much effort.
Okay the initial setting is neat, I'll give 'em that. Abandoned structures and shipwrecks in the middle of the ocean is a pretty unique concept. And you play as a person of colour! Unfortunately, that's about all this game has going for it.
I can't get over the pipe swinging animation. Why is he trying to draw cut with a pipe? Is he some sort of Katana master or something? SWING IT LIKE A BLOODY BAT
+Greg Thomas don't call them "devs", that would be a compliment. And why do even care if the asset-flipper is Russian? There are like 5 Russian games from 180 in "Best of Steam Greenlight" playlist, so it's hardly an important factor. On the other hand, submitting a game for Greenlight costs only 45 bucks in Russian Steam.
I think people do it for visual distraction, or because they think floating around smoothly looks unnatural (or they're not good enough to make it not), but in this case I'm guessing it was just a preset they used because they couldn't be bothered to program their own first person camera. Or find a better one. Guessing.
Yes that is the half life 2 flashlight sound. Either it's a stock sound effect or they stole it straight from HL2. it doesn't look like this is made in source from what the lighting looks like but then again I could be wrong.
Use of stock assets is actually not such a bad thing here, as it contributes to the world seem very artificial and "off". Same with the torch eating darkness. Still lazy though.
I just went on the Steam Store page for this game, and two things have already confused me.First is the fact that they have a subway car from Metro 2033 on one of their screenshots, and second is the fact that this game has mostly positive reviews.
+MrVogel115 One of those positive reviews is from someone that owns a total of 15 games and has played 0.2 hours of this one. Another is just the single word 'good' I think that says it all.
+MrVogel115 Psst... that's what actual Moscow subway cars look like. Blue with the stripe along the side and the ridge things. That's why it was also in Metro 2033.
I wanna make a game titled "How Not to Make a Horror Game" and include every single bad horror game mechanics there are in a one single shit storm so no one ever has to play these other inferior shitty horror games ever again. I would be the guy to go to when you need a fix for the o' shit horror games. I have no experience in coding so I can do that, so now I only need someone who has significantly worse English than me and has no idea how to write a story whatsoever and we'll be set.
Jim i was wondering if you ever played some of really good half life mods such as Cry of fear, Grey, Afraid of Monsters. Those were some really great horror games and those games were even free, this shitty horror game just shows how some developers dont understand what makes a good horror game, and these shitty horror games just keep coming up on Steam
Wait, is this game made in the Half Life 2 engine? The flashlight has the same exact SFX as it in HL2, and the in-game graphics and physics look awfully similar too...
As soon as the gameplay started, I recognized all of those assets as being from the Source engine. So, if it isn't built in source, then that means the devs probably just bought a Source themed asset pack for Unity.
wouldnt apply here cuz there are walls, but when i was in Afghanistan i learned that in a pitch dark, open environment, a beam of light actually does just disappear into the void.
14:15 *PHYYYYYSIIIIICS!* I'm not sure, I think they're going for something _really_ abstract, but it's just coming across as weird and random. There's no point of reference to give anything context, so the abstract stuff just doesn't make anything resembling sense.
This has to be the absolute WORST flashlight a game has ever had. It's not even a circle of light, it's just a horizotal line of light that only let's you see 1 centimeter in front of your feet.
The origional Half Life had a pretty bad flash light. It was basically a small blob of light that appeared on whatever face your crosshair pointed at. Although that was 1998 and this is 2016.
Yeah I wish games would have flashlights that were like alien isolation were it lights up the room, except take out the extremely low battery life and make it permanent light source.
0:55 oh this horror game is nice and bright, and you can actually see things, very good.
5:28 nevermind.
+Ven “Meta-Bastard” Flemmingson At least there's some kind of contrast, instead of "HERE'S SPOOKY DARKNESS 5EVER! SKELLINGTENS!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Trash.
A lot of the visuals in this game are so basic that it looks flat. It takes talent to make something look so lifeless.
+DreamcastGuy looks a lot like Garry's Mod to me...
+mazazon Not just the flat levels, but the damage and the climbing makes me think this is literally just a poorly made Gmod level sold as a game
+DreamcastGuy There isn't any lighting at all.
+gnihton Oh wow, I hadnt noticed that. All the lighting in the entire game looks off.
+DreamcastGuy Maybe it's symbolic......of shitty game development.
All worth it for that dance sequence at the end!
I might actually buy the game if it were just an hour of that ;P
Seeing those Gollum things stuck like that at the end I thought to myself "Now this is just begging for a musical parody."
And you delivered. Thank you.
It had sort of an interesting start. And then straight into the "why...?" category.
At least the game has a nice idle dancing animation :)
Whats with indie developers and not knowing something as basic as the way a flashlight works. Man if they created the universe then Earth would have no light because the suns light would be unable to reach Earth.
I feel like most indie horror devs need to live in a dark room with a flashlight for a week to figure out the way those work.
It boggles my mind how most of these indie devs have no common sense whatsoever.
+Xen Noxatron Putting their shitty games on steam is a prime example of that.
+Pierce Chang Actually, I imagine it's just too much work to code your own, so these developers just use a pre-existing flashlight animation. A pre-existing flashlight animation that sucks major sphincter.
If I had to guess I'd say that either Unity has stock flashlight effects that are all shit or there's a bunch of shitty flashlights on the Unity store
"Now we're going to jump on these floating cocaine boxes" - Congrats Jim, I believe that's the first time any human has said those words in that order aloud
"This game will not damage your psyche". If Jim is covering it on Squirty Plays, I going to have to be a bit skeptical about that claim...
+The SilentCaay Channel what is phyche?
Gotta love the rhythmically challenged zombie Macarena ending.
That outro was bloody fantastic. Well played, Jim.
Proof of concept for 2019's "Control" by Remedy.
lmaoooo when that music started played at the end to their heads bobbing I laughed out loud
A game called Locked-In Syndrom(e) that shipped without an executable file? That's meta.
theres no way this is source engine. i work with source on a daily basis and those lens flares you see on everything would be impossible without a big reworking of the engine. i doubt these devs put that much effort.
+sparkie1j but at least some resources (the flashlight sound foremost) is from source.
+Turi1337 oh yeah that sound for sure
+sparkie1j Also, the water, ladder climbing, movement, jumping (part of movement) and general "feel" is not Source.
+sparkie1j I do believe that this is Unity with stolen source sounds.
At around 5.10 the picking up animation looks like a stock unity animation to me.
3:02
Ha! Ok Jim, you got me. I laughed at that one.
+XFanmarX
Have some respect, man. He just lost he psyche.
That bit at the end was well done. Bravo
Move with me
Turn with me
HEEEEEY, IT'S A FEATURE!
Josh Perez thanks for the lyrics of the song in the end! I can actually find the song now.
Okay the initial setting is neat, I'll give 'em that. Abandoned structures and shipwrecks in the middle of the ocean is a pretty unique concept. And you play as a person of colour! Unfortunately, that's about all this game has going for it.
That ending was glorious.
Well, that intro was better than the Jimquisition's theme song!
Not really though ;)
+Alex Murray by the way what is that song's name?
Born depressed - Drill Queen
+Alex Murray thanks, fuckin love that song
I can't get over the pipe swinging animation.
Why is he trying to draw cut with a pipe?
Is he some sort of Katana master or something?
SWING IT LIKE A BLOODY BAT
I donno my psychey feels a little harmed from this
looks like they've finished psychonauts 2
This game looked a lot more interesting before it went to the dark tunnels of boring floating concrete.
That end fully deserves my upvote.
That musical bit at the end made me laugh so hard!
Hmm, So unity assets+engrish= Russian Devs.
That's the steam way to be. Glorious Gaben commands it.
+Greg Thomas don't call them "devs", that would be a compliment. And why do even care if the asset-flipper is Russian? There are like 5 Russian games from 180 in "Best of Steam Greenlight" playlist, so it's hardly an important factor.

Speaking of locked-in syndrome, I just watched _The Diving Bell and the Butterfly_ a week ago.
6:19 A chronic bator tied up in an abandoned warehouse? I love that Bound Gods' episode!
Is not making the first person camera bob all over the place something difficult to do or time consuming? I genuinely want to know at this point.
I think people do it for visual distraction, or because they think floating around smoothly looks unnatural (or they're not good enough to make it not), but in this case I'm guessing it was just a preset they used because they couldn't be bothered to program their own first person camera. Or find a better one. Guessing.
*skipped ahead in the video*
Jim Sterling: "you are probably wondering how I got here?"
mother of all timing
Jim, what remix of Macarena is this?
I need to know for research purposes
I played the first half a seconded over and over just to hear Jim shout with joy that "he's pissing the bed."
That ending is fucking gold man.
First "Let's have a carriage ride" I heard as "Let's have a cabbage ride" and I can't unhear this
Was that the poor man's Macarena?
instrumental version probably
ThePoptartster I'd like to say no but I can't find the actual song based on the lyrics "if you want me, come get me"
It's definitely something based on Macarena, but I don't know what remix it is specifically.
I loved the dance in the end of the video. :)
studio 48? is that like 38 studios? hopefully these guys didn't hurt the economy of another state.
Another is just the single word 'good'
I think that says it all.
+MrVogel115 Well, it is quite a horrific video game.
+MrVogel115 Psst... that's what actual Moscow subway cars look like. Blue with the stripe along the side and the ridge things. That's why it was also in Metro 2033.
Garry's Mod - The Horror Game
Congrats on 300 thousand subs!
300K video coming? =) with 40 min game play of Slaughtering Grounds?
OMG what a great outro xD
I know I can't be the only one but I haven't ever had a problem with first person platforming and I find it enjoyable.
That ending was hilarious
I wanna make a game titled "How Not to Make a Horror Game" and include every single bad horror game mechanics there are in a one single shit storm so no one ever has to play these other inferior shitty horror games ever again. Happy 300k subs Jim!
Brilliant outro
12:40 - Saint Petersburg's Metro scheme?
the Devs seem to be Russian (text on notes). this also explains the "syndrom" spelling
How much of a nerd am I when I saw the note "Stay away from THEM" and instantly thought "Oh, this game has giant ants?"
A first person horror game where a lighting glitch provide a better torchlight than the actual torch?
Is it a step forward?
they need a horror game where instead of a flashlight the building has power and you can just use the lightswitch
19:40 This is so beautiful...
300,000 subscribers! There needs to be some sort of celebration
I'm sure the interior world of a Locked in Syndrome victim is very rich, complex, and sometimes dark and weird, but I'm not seeing that here XD
The END is ... hilarious ...
at 13:30. was that a retsupurae reference?
It actually does disappear like that, in a cave or something when there's no other light and it doesn't throw far enough :D
"You are here" [shows map of human brain with a arrow linking to the visual cortex] WTF?!
Should have played "Walk Like An Egyptian" for that end part
Was it worth the revenue strike for the joke at the end there, Jim? Because I think it was. Good on ya.
Wait, is this game made in the Half Life 2 engine? The flashlight has the same exact SFX as it in HL2, and the in-game graphics and physics look awfully similar too...
That Camera Angle, where is Terl and Ker when you need them. Battlefield Psychology: The Psychlon Connection.
Ohh dear Lord this would make any mildly competent developer weep.
The torch doesn't make a whole lot of a difference, does it? :D More like a darkness emitter, this one.
hey, as a suggestion, try to play wind lands on the oculus rift, i heard it was amazing for a vr experience, its on early access on steam.
anyone else bothered by the fact that the flashlight sound is from half life?
+JoeTheHunter It made me wonder if this is actually a half life 2 mod.
As soon as the gameplay started, I recognized all of those assets as being from the Source engine. So, if it isn't built in source, then that means the devs probably just bought a Source themed asset pack for Unity.
He's pissing out Ink, EWWWWW
:O no way
6:25 If that thing was in a decent horror-game instead of this bug-ridden mess, it would actually terrify me.
Wow, that's the first time I've heard the Macarena in about 12 years. I forgot how shit it was. Thanks Jim.
OZGlitch it sounds like something else because the lyrics I hear are 'if you want me, come get me'
listening to some sound effects.. this just makes me feel like I'm playing a hl2 mod
Was this made in the Unreal Engine? I swear the statue things look like the ash thingies from Betrayer.
i think it's source engine
+stick P This isn't Source.
The creatures power is to grow pants, best power ever.
wouldnt apply here cuz there are walls, but when i was in Afghanistan i learned that in a pitch dark, open environment, a beam of light actually does just disappear into the void.
Did someone try to take a Tool music video and make it a game?
Next nitpick theater: the horrible first person ladders.
14:15 *PHYYYYYSIIIIICS!*
I'm not sure, I think they're going for something _really_ abstract, but it's just coming across as weird and random. There's no point of reference to give anything context, so the abstract stuff just doesn't make anything resembling sense.
this kind of reminds me of a game that could be in the beginner's guide that would allegedly be made by coda

The ending LOL
I don't believe I have heard that rendition of Macarena you played at the end, Jim.
But Jim! Now you can never be fully healed of your pain!
That ending made me lol 10/10
i about died laughing at the end
i was randomly reading about the locked in syndrome 30 min ago .... scary coincidence
song at the end? please
I came up with a song for the Jimquisition.
"He's pissing the bed!" x20
that ending lol
Is this a tech demo? Feels like a tech demo from 2003
9:40 what does that "НЕ ВЛЕ3АИ, НЕ УБЬЕТ" mean?
Sorry I'm late, just noticed your question: it means "DO NOT LEAVE, WILL NOT KILL" according to Google Translate, but could be wrong.
@@RichardWatt Well, thanks - I can use Google Translate myself, though ;-)
If this is horror I am immune to fear.
That was the best time to end the video :D
The developer(s) never thought to getting rid of some of the Half-Life sounds effects.
Garry's Mod 2: The Mod Father
I see it's made using far cry 3's map editor, always a good start.
