Im also in a quest for the JG sound/style. You seem to nail the tuning on all your kits. Are you tuning the batter slightly higher than reso? Im experimenting with tunings, would love to know. Great drums, great playing btw.
Thanks for the kind words. I've been working on the Gordon tuning for awhile now, and I'm getting really close. He knew how to tune - no surprise; he was a master in the studio. The toms are tuned exactly the same top and bottom, and I use a drum dial because my ears deceive me when the lugs get close to tone another but aren't the same. Jim tuned his toms very low; the 13" is almost detuned. I'd list the drum dial settings, but they are different to get the same tuning on different makes - for instance, my Ludwig Legacy kit uses higher settings to get the same notes.
Thanks so much for the info, i know just what you mean about boingy. Im always working on the why does love got to be so sad,in concert version. Obsessed with got to get better feel. Its so subtle but driving and relaxed. Thanks again.
I feel your pain. I have been practicing the live version of "Why Does Love Got To Be So Sad" for about 8 years now...and I've only recently gotten the feel down. On a bad day, I can play the notes, but it doesn't groove. On a good day, it grooves. One person commented on a post of the live version that Jim basically played studio-quality drumming throughout that whole piece. it's incredible. I have two versions up here already; I feel like I need to post one every year to mark my progress. Jim was a master.
You're preachin' to the choir, ha ha. I have the DCC disc of "Orpheus", several different versions of his Charlie Brown music, and some of his other work. The man had a touch on the piano like no other.
Fantastic JBG cover, you're an exceptional player. The Camcos sound spot on. Wonderful! Thanks for posting.
Thank you so much!
Nice Camcos. They sound great. Nice job.
Thanks! Getting ever so closer to the Gordon sound....

What snare are you using? Sounds great. Maybe you should do a tutorial on the Jim Gordon tuning and sound.
Thanks! The snare is a George Way (Dunnett) Tradition mahogany snare. I found that it sounded closer to a Camco Oaklawn snare than an all-maple snare.
You should totally do some more Vince Guaraldi covers. Try some from the A Boy Named Charlie Brown album. I'd love it
My cover of "Linus & Lucy" got taken down...I should make another.
bellbrass There's so much good Guaraldi music to explore as well, though Linus and Lucy is definitely a favorite to many

bellbrass that's awesome! Black Orpheus is also one of my favorites. So much creativity in his work
Im curious what kind of tuning you use? Are resos higher than batter or vice versa? Nailed that JG tuning.
Tops and bottoms are dead on one another. When I tune one head differently to the other, there's always a boing I don't like.
