    Kodiak Solar Generator Six Month Review
    We are revisiting the kodiak solar generator. I've had it about six months, so we are going to dive into another review to see how it has been doing and what we’ve been using it for. We’ll show some big tests where I put it up against washers, dryers, air conditioners, and refrigerators to push this thing over the top and see what it can really do.
    The Kodiak Solar Generator
    For an in-depth look at the Kodiak Solar Generator, including technical specs such as weight, battery types, and more detailed information, click HERE
    Using the Kodiak for Heating
    I love using the Kodiak Solar Generator for heat during cold weather situations. For example, we used it when we camped at 11,000 feet at Chinns Lake LINK. In my tent, we set up the Mr. Heater LINK. For my girlfriend’s tent, I plugged an electric blanket into the Kodiak Solar Generator. It kept her toasty warm all weekend and used 15-20 watts for a twin sized blanket. The generator will run that electric blanket for three nights easily without needing to be recharged. It’s totally quiet and requires no propane; it’s very convenient.
    Charging Your Electronics
    My RV will connect directly to the 30 amp plug on the generator. For example, when I overextended my RV batteries early in the night, I connected the solar generator and restored power to the entire system. The converter was charging the batteries, all of our lights were on, I turned the stereo back on, and the whole RV came back to life. Otherwise, I would have had to start my front engine to charge my back battery so I could start the diesel generator, which is quite loud and blows exhaust everywhere.
    Kodiak Solar Generator Load Tests
    I ran a series of tests over the past six months to determine the load capacity of the generator and was pleasantly surprised by its capabilities.
    Running a Washer and Dryer with the Generator
    Electric dryers usually run off 220 volts, the Kodiak only has 110. Also, electric dryers use 3000 watts and are very power hungry. But if you have a gas dryer, the electric just turns the drum and ignites the pilot, so it will run the dryer as well. The generator easily runs the washer, even with a large load of laundry.
    If your power is out or if it’s an off-grid situation, this generator is very convenient. It used maybe twenty percent of the battery capacity in the Kodiak, so you could probably run multiple loads without running out of power.
    After a full cycle with both the washer and dryer, the Kodiak solar generator was at 60 percent, so it only used 40 percent of its energy doing an entire load.
    Operating a Refrigerator
    These generators will run a normal-sized, energy star compliant, light-duty cycle refrigerator for approximately 33 hours. Since my refrigerators are old and inefficient, I was curious to see how long they would run on this generator.
    We used it all day with the compressor doing way more than 20 percent duty and it lasted 12 hours pulling over 600 watts. 12 hours would likely get you through a brief power outage.
    I tried again with a newer refrigerator and it lasted 15.5 hours and we used it all day. I was pleased with the length of time it lasted. If you were using an energy efficient fridge and were not opening it very often, I am confident you could get 30 hours out of it.
    Running an Air Conditioner with the Generator
    It ran a 5000 BTU AC for 2 hours by itself with no solar. It also ran a 15000 BTU air conditioner and ti ran it fine for 30 minutes before I shut it down. See this link for a more detailed video of this demonstration. It will also run microwaves, fans, battery chargers, laptops, cell phones, solar lamps, flat screen tvs, power drills, and a wet dry vac all at the same time! Thanks to its pure sine wave inverter.
    Using the Solar Generator to Power Your Home
    The generator is great for power outages at home. I have experienced two power outages since getting this generator and it was very useful. I even plugged in my modem and router to maintain fast internet during the outage. I hooked up a laptop, a tv, a lamp, and everyone had their phones and ipads plugged in, plus a speaker for music. I am confident this generator would be perfect for any power outage or off grid situation.
    Final Thoughts and Discount Codes
    I love using the generator for every situation. I’ll bring it out for powering cell phones, lights, crock pots, water pumps, lights, lamps, music - this thing does it all. The four other solar generators I used went back to the store for being too heavy or having too little functionality. Here’s a LINK for 20 percent off the Kodiak Solar Generator. www.shareasale...

    Can this be tied into a battery and inverter system to provide emergency power to my house in a grid down situation? I plan to have up to 10 deep cycle batteries tied into an 8,000 to 12,000 watt inverter with an automatic switch to convert to inverter power immediately upon a power outage. The solar panels and solar generator would be used primarily for charging batteries on the emergency system, but would also be used for portable power for off-site HAM radio use and other fun stuff. I know right? I love my Kodiak! One of the other guys out there is that stupid goal zero thing, and I think that's why people who hear about the Kodiak without knowing what it really is, think it's a piece of crap, because they think it's the goal zero solar generator.
    The Goal Zero generator has absolutely NOTHING on a Kodiak. Just right off the bat, the goal zero takes like, 18 or 20 hours or something ridiculous like that (maybe even more) to charge......it's not even practical.
    With 600 or even 500 watts of solar going into the Kodiak through the big port, it will fully charge in a few hours. This thing is absolutely amazing.

    • @fullmoonadventureclub
      @fullmoonadventureclub  5 лет назад +2

      To be honest if your goal is to run an air conditioning unit even at 5000 BTUs which draws about 500 watts an hour you're going to need the gold package. It has 500 watts of solar coming in which would leave you at the end of the day after the sun goes down with 1100 watts of reserved power in the battery. That would give you your best chance of running an air conditioner the entire day and having a little bit of energy left over when the Sun goes down. If you get the silver package you might make it 6 hours to 8 hours but the Kodiak battery would probably be dead at the end of that time. Then you would have to charge it up the next day without using the air conditioner. Your best bet is to go with the gold package so that you're bringing in as much solar as your air conditioner is using. Small window units typically run at around 400 to 500 watts if they are a 5000 BTU air conditioner. If you do decide this is something right for you now is a great time to do it because they're having a big presale event where everything is discounted. If you use the link below this video or use my code word Adventure you will save an additional 20% on top of that. Let me know if you have any other questions. Take care and happy camping.

    • @fullmoonadventureclub
      @fullmoonadventureclub  5 лет назад

      @@allanarango1047 well I think you would be in pretty good shape to run one 5000 BTU AC. Using two of them I don't think would make it the entire day. You would be looking at a thousand watts of energy use and the Kodiak just doesn't have that much to put in. Its maximum solar input is 500 watts but it does have an mppt charge controller which makes it 30% more efficient. I will say you can run one but I don't think you can run two for very long. The Kodiak inverter can run up to 1500 watts continuously and both AC units would pull around a thousand Watts. It just won't last long with the batteries.

      Using the Apex would run your water pump for a very long time. However, using it for your electric water heater on your RV would drain it incredibly fast as they use around a thousand Watts. Your best bet for that would be to use your water heater on the gas setting when you're out boondocking and away from electrical hookups and Power. The Apex would run your lights and a laptop and other accessories just fine. But when it comes to using it for electric heaters they're just not designed for that. Jim

    What adapter do I need to plug a Zamp solar suitcase into the Kodiak? And will I be using the large port or the small one? My panels are 140 watts.

    • @fullmoonadventureclub
      @fullmoonadventureclub  5 лет назад +1

      You're going to have to be very careful here. Zamp plugs are a different orientation than most other solar panels in the sense that the exposed metal tip on their plug is the negative not the positive. You're going to need to find an adapter that goes to that and then wire on your own ec8 plug. But I must warn you you have to check all of the criteria of the Apex before attempting this so you do not damage your system. I cannot tell you for sure because it's going to void your warranty and I would hate to damage something. Do research and get a volt meter so you can check polarity and all that good stuff before you proceed. I really wish I could be more help here but that's as much as I think I can say. Jim

I can't remember the name of the third off the top of my head but it was much smaller. The problem with the nature power 1800 was that it used lead acid batteries in the entire unit weight about 80 lb. Goal Zero was mainly cost and also the weight. Even at 45lb it was a bit much for me to Lug around camping. The Kodiak weighs 20 lb and that just blows my mind. So I don't think I'll ever go back to any other unit. The warning about voltage on the Kodiak refers to connecting auxiliary batteries directly to the red and black terminals on the Kodiak side ports. If you connect your RV using the 30 amp plug on the Kodiak you are using the Kodiaks inverter which is safe for any application. What are the best plug & play solar panels to use with the kodiak.

    • @fullmoonadventureclub
      @fullmoonadventureclub  6 лет назад

      I would not worry about an RV fire from using your gas fridge. They are very safe and reliable in most cases. If you are woried about gas you do not have to use it. Just use its 12 volt setting to run it off batteries and solar. As for the kodiak It depends on what you intend to use it for. Any solar panels will work with it. Renogy has inexpensive panels that would work or you can get your panels from Inergy which are built very sturdy. Jim

      So the only version that they're selling is there new version which is called the energy flex. It does not have a 30 amp RV plug which I did like. However all the normal plugs put out the full output of the inverter so you just need a small adapter now.

    When i order my RV , can i replace the LP generator with this solar generator, i also want to replace the 3 way. Fridge with a solar fridge . I know i have to have some LP for the trauma aqua water heater but i plan to have a portable induction cooktop so i wont be using the propane stovetop. I want to increase my inverter to maybe 3000 & have lithium batteries. This is for a class B+ LTV 25 ft. Tell me what you think???

    • @fullmoonadventureclub
      @fullmoonadventureclub  6 лет назад +1

      I am sure all of that would work just fine as long as you have plenty of sun for the solar. The gas generator might come in handy for cloudy days. The Kodiak will work as a 1500 watt inverter and 90 amp battery but it sounds like you are getting a 3000 watt inverter with lithium batteries. I don't think you would need the kodiak with that setup. You could just use your solar and inverter to obtain the same results. Refrigerators use a decent amount of power, are you sure you don't want a gas/electric fridge incase you need the power? I like my gas fridge but I do not have a ton of solar to run it on electric. Let us know how it turns out. Thank you for watching and happy camping. Jim

    Do you think the Kodiak can run a computer and lights ?

    • @fullmoonadventureclub

      Absolutely. A computer uses 60 to 250 watts depending on build and what you have it doing. Let's just assume you are using the desktop computer for a hard task like video editing and its using 200 watts. The Apex or Kodiak has 1100 watts of battery so with no solar you would get around 5 hours. 10 hours if you are just browsing the internet and way more using a small laptop. I hope that helps.

    • @fullmoonadventureclub
      @fullmoonadventureclub  6 лет назад +1

      I did do a test with a small space heater using the Kodiak solar generator. It ran it just fine but it would deplete the battery quite fast as even the smallest electrical heater runs at about a 1000 W to 1500 W. So it's not very practical to use this for electrical heaters. So I was very excited when I realized heating blankets run for a very long time and will keep you pretty warm and camping or cold situations at least in the bed. I might do some more testing hooking up other batteries but it's not on the docket for a while. Jim

    • @chachi5975
      @chachi5975 5 лет назад

      I think I have a similar set up. It shouldn't matter how your battery bank is charged. How are you planning on charging the Apex? I just hooked up mine to my battery bank where I installed a 12v 25 amp cigarette socket. I contacted Inergy and they sent me a "quick car charger". It's a male cigarette connector on one side and the EC8 connector on the other. Much more efficient than using the wall charger from my inverter. Your experience is definitely NOT my experience. I've been using my Kodiak for a year now. I bought a drip coffee maker and it sucked so much power just turning it on that I went from 4 green lights to 2 green lights. This was before it made coffee - just turning it on. It powers my wireless router, laptop, and one LED light bulb. Even when charging it off a generator - it barely charges.

    • @fullmoonadventureclub
      @fullmoonadventureclub  5 лет назад

      Keep in mind that most coffee makers take anywhere from 500 to 1200 watts to brew coffee. That's more than a 5000 BTU air conditioner. So it will definitely drain them fast. When using the generator to charge your Kodiak are you using the AC adapter? Because it does take a long time to charge it using that adapter. I believe it's 8 hours. If you charge it using the DC plug it will charge it in three to four hours. Jim
