I kinda loved how she was written. She was a tragic character, not every companion should have the best time of their life on the Tardis. She knew when to leave and she had a maturity about her and never lost her head. She was a realist.
She had some of the hardest episodes, emotionally speaking and was just so…active. The doctor turning human, forgetting her and watching him fall in love with someone else, supporting the doctor when they were stuck in time because of the weeping angels, and saving the earth on her own. Literally, on her own. No prophecy, no crack in time, no bad wolf, just her and her own two feet, travelling while the world crashed and burned around her. She’s the strongest companion in nuWho.
Well except handles of course. Martha is my personal favourite so seriously no hate to this comment. Just couldn't help but point out that handles end was the only thing that made me cry on this show and also the fact that he was with the doctor for the longest out of all the companions. Oh and he's the reason for some great moments with the whole putting the doctor onto a darlec ship with a broken piece of darklec and then going onto a cyberman ship with him.
Martha didnt turn into a god, or immortal, or stuck in a parallel universe, or stuck in a different time, or not allowed to see the Doctor, or have her memories erased after becoming a Time Lord level genius for a few hours. The dramatic shit of elevating most female companions just to have tragedy and distance strike, didn't happen. Martha left on her own, continued working to help the world, stayed friends with Jack and got together with Micky. Martha had successful relationships/friendships before and after the Doctor, despite the experience of the Doctor not appreciating her (not just compared with Rose; Donna comes along and 10 is like "I will listen to you! only you!" probs because of being loud with her good opinions). Martha was real fucking cool, smart, and kind, and funny. She was not the only companion with an unrequited crush (Amy), but she gets treated badly because the Doctor refused to look at anyone not actively forcing him to look at them, because he's caught up in missing the first person he connected with after the Time War. tldr: Martha is an exceptionally good companion that doesnt fall into other companion stereotypes despite her theme in the show being "miss overlooked" fans still overlook her
Martha is so underrated. 11 seasons in and she's still the only nuWho companion who left the TARDIS willingly on her own terms. She realized their relationship was toxic, the Doctor didn't value her friendship enough, she'd always want more than friendship, yada yada, it'd never work. So she did the best possible thing for both of them and put a stop to it. And that's just 1 of the reasons why Martha Jones is badass, thank you
@rute filgueiras That's why I said the only nuWho companion. Technically Amy left willingly too, but that's because the Angels forced her to choose between Rory and the Doctor. Martha was the only companion in the revived series who had nothing to lose if she stayed. No deaths, alternate universes, clones, immortality or massive time paradoxes complicating the situation. Staying was the easier option, but she still left just cause she knew moving on was the better option.
Martha is the golden example of what a companion should be. She’s positive, she’s smart as hell, she’s a literal doctor and most of all her life choices are extremely admirable, she’s the only companion out of all the RTD era that didn’t either get her memory wiped or got trapped on a parallel earth.
Hey Donna is pretty much a tie in my opinion but i love Martha. I love when she made the doctor sit down and talk. He tried to play dumb but she was like (naw fam)
She's also not tied into any kind of destiny or prophesy or hidden connection with the doctor. She's just her own person with her own life and her adventures with the doctor were just one small part of it. As it should be.
Hannah Jayne If it makes you feel any better Martha was originally intended to appear in both Sarah Jane and Children of Earth so they could extend her presence in all three shows. Sadly it wasn’t to be due to Freema’s busy schedule. But at least she got to appear again in Series 2 of Torchwood and Series 4 of Doctor Who.
@Claire Cre8tes Huh? Martha got captured all the time?? Martha wasn't usually the damsel in distress. Many other companions had that role, but not Martha, even in the rare times she was the damsel in distress she saved herself or saved the Doctor in a big way to balance it out. In Gridlock when they got caught by the macra, she saved her and the people with her, 42 she almost crashed into the sun, but the Doctor saved her and then she saved him and the others. In Human Nature/Family of Blood she was the one that saved the people at the dance and stood up to the family of blood and had to be the doctor while he wasn't around In Last of the Timelords she straight up was the Doctor while the Doctor was the damsel in distress companion. Ext... Not sure who you're remembering but it wasn't her.
Martha is really under-rated, not the my personal fav but she dosent deserve the hate. She saved the world. On. Her. Own. She deserves praise for crying out loud.
Yes, exactly! She didn't need Time Vortex or crack in time being poured into her head, she didn't need to jump to Doctor's timestream or to share his DNA, she managed to do it on her own.
I think we all just felt protective over the doctors heart and missed rose. Her crush always annoyed me despite the fact I'd be the same if I were her.
@@villanellepollastri8894 LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO You're the first one I've ever seen to admit this! I'd DEFINITELY be like her especially if the doctor still had David cute ass face!
Martha the Doctor: "I spent a lot of time with you thinking I was second best but you know what? I am good." Rose literally as soon as she meets Martha: "Oh she's good!"
I love how during her stint in Torchwood Jack didn't let a single conversation go by without referencing what she'd done in the year of the Master's reign - it's like he wanted to thank her on behalf of everybody on Earth, one person at a time.
marthas character had one of the best personalities especially in the earlier episodes. But this gets overshadowed by her gradually increasing unrequited love for the doctor
@@movedaccounts6980 Tom Ellis, who plays the guy that was helping Martha during the whole Harold Saxon thing, also plays Lucifer (Satan, the Devil) on the show Lucifer.
The Doctor and Martha's relationship summarised: Doctor: It's a beautiful moon out tonight. Martha: Yeah. Doctor: You know what else is beautiful? Martha: _blushes_ What? Doctor: Rose.
And the best part that I love about her ? She end up being part/leading UNIT, because she saw the universe and the threats, she stay being and was kind of like the doctor, she protect the earth and save it with or without the doctor help. Another we can compare her with ? Clara who didn't let the doctor do whatever he wanted, helped when he couldn't. Every companion are different but Martha, Donna and Clara are the best because most of the time they would slap the bullshit out of the doctor.
@@doctormaboule true but Donna is the best for me coz she just want to be in the TARDIS as a friend and companion to the doctor from start to till she unwillingly have to leave the TARDIS unlike the other
Living in 1913. Having to get a job in 1969. The year fighting the Master. How much time did Martha spend with the Doctor? She is such an incredibly strong woman, her character deserved so much better. One of my favourite companions ever.
MARTHA: Do you just get bored of us one day and disappear CAPTAIN JACK: Not if you’re blonde MARTHA: Ohhhhhh she was blonde?!?! ohhhh what a surpriseeee?!?!
Rose and Donna are great and Billie piper and Caine Tate lend lots of charm into each character! But Martha is objectively the best! The smartest, most resourceful, most accomplished companion the Doctor had in all of the modern Who series.
she’s the most underrated character of the modern era. she’s sassy, knows how to deal with the doctor, she’s INTELLIGENT and she’s the only one to get out alive and safe. love her.
Martha summed up: Doctor: Guess who'd help right now... Martha: Oh, me? Y'know, the one who went round the entire world and convinced people to think of your name and you so that you can rise against The Master and defeat him? Doctor: No, Rose.
Looking back on her, she's honestly one of the best companions in Doctor who. She didn't do what the Doctor told her if she knew it was wrong and she knew that the Doctor was looking down on her which is why she left
ANEXUS - Gaming and Video Making with Pride. Yeah, Martha is DEFINITELY in my top 5 best companions. Sometimes I don’t understand why people like Rose so much. I thought in some aspects she was quite rude, for example how she treated Sarah Jane Smith and I didn’t like how she just went with the doctor despite barely even knowing him. She was gorgeous though.
That legit happened to me once Me: *bursts into brothers room* ARE YOU OK!?! (he jusy threw up) Brother: Ive told u to knock a million times Me: *runs back and knocks door* Are you ok Brother: Smart ass

@@lewisunderwood9471 that was reversed, remember? in the alternate timeline tom was killed (and he was only a brief character in the season 3 finale). not the tom from a year ago, who martha ends up engaged to. (and then evidently broke up with)
She is fucking incredible. Practically every companion stayed with the doctor untill they forcibly couldn't. Martha knew she was giving up the most incredible life but she saw what it could do and was strong enough to leave.
The thing I’ve realized, upon revisiting the Russel T Davies era, is that of the three main companions, Martha is the one *better off* without the Doctor. Rose and Donna are incredibly fun in part because of how they bring out the best in the Doctor and vice versa. Martha is awesome, and grows a lot during her time in the TARDIS, but ultimate she could never be fully actualized as long as she was with (and pining after) the Doctor. Which is part of why it is SO GREAT that we get everybody back for the end of Series 4. Her and Mickey? We love to see it 🙌🏽
Honestly, Martha and Mickie getting married was probably one of the most beautiful things on the show. Two characters, both in love with people who don't value them enough for who they are. The Doctor only saw Rose. Rose only saw the Doctor. Martha and Mickie deserve each other.
well, I dont think they were in love with those people when they got married to each other. They realized their self worth, and decided to pick people who would be good to them, who they were attracted to, and who had been through similar things.
@@Ru136 it made sense when mickey ran away with martha and jack and then when the 10th doctor was dying seeing how they were doing in the future anything couldve been possible
Martha wasn’t my favorite companion but OHHH man was it great when she came back twice in season 4. She was so good as a character post-companion, and she really matured as a result of her time with 10.
People didn't like her because she was in love with the Doctor. That pissed off the fan base who were mourning Rose. It annoys me because Martha deserved better but I can also see why she fell in love with him. From his companion's point of view a compassionate, brilliant, often handsome, man falls out of the sky and whisks you off on the adventure of a lifetime where you both save people across time and space and explore the wonders of the universe. Who wouldn't fall in love with him either romantically or platonically like Donna? The Doctor and Donna were the best best friends ever I loved that they adored each other but it was never romantic. (I'm still heartbroken about Donna in 2019 and always will be.) I wish Martha and the Doctor could have had that kind of relationship so she could have avoided the heartache because she's awesome. But again I can't blame companions for loving the Doctor; but those mourning Rose did blame Martha for that and that's why so many people didn't like her.
I know. It's annoying when people don't like the characters when they replace their favourite. You don't have to like the new character but hating them is what I find annoying. Especially in a show like doctor who which is all about change. I also find it annoying that people who love rose hate on Martha because of what happened to her. I get that what happened to rose was sad but I think, in my opinion, that that whole story arc and rose as a character on the whole is a bit overrated. Yeah her ending was sad but she got a happy ending with the clone of the doctor. Other characters, like Donna had a even sadder ending. So hating on Martha because she fell in love with him when he wasn't over rose and because of what happened to her is so sad, is actually stupid. And objectively speaking, character wise, rose is not that strong, other characters like Martha and Donna and others are stronger.
It's mostly people who only like Rose. I adore Rose, she's one of my favourite companions of New Who, but I also love Martha to death. A lot of people don't realize you don't have to pick just one, you can like them both. There's no need to pit them against each other; you can just love them as a whole because they're both great characters with wonderful qualities.
Martha is so underrated. I do understand how the doctor was so upset about losing Rose but when Amy was teleported away by the Weeping Angels the Doctor greeted Clara with open arms and treated her with great respect.
Well not really he swear off partnerships after amy right? They had a nice friendship i thought but obviously u see so much more pain over rose which is weird cuz she was so annoying and useless and jealous. Im so happy martha toned down the jealous stuff and left .also martha help the doctor so much more and donna helped his broken heart better too .like the doctor just like his woman usless or something lol idk
Because the writers learned people won't like the new companion as much if the doctor does that. Plus the added the Impossible Girl mystery to distract the doctor and the audience from missing Amy.
High-key the best companion. Sure, Rose was the love interest and Donna was the best friend but Martha is iconic all on her own, even without the Doctor. And she does still have great chemistry with him anyway.
Doctor Who just doesn’t have actors and actresses like this anymore it’s depressing. And I can’t believe you missed the parts where Martha openly laughs right in the masters face and wrecks his entire plans
Elliot Davies Billie Piper, freema, Catherine Tate, Hell even Jackie and all the irrelevant side cast who appeared in one off episodes are better actors then Matt Smith, Jenna Coleman, Karen Gillan, Maise Williams etc
Elliot Davies maybe it’s a British thing but we all think the acting us series 1 to 4 is miles better than 5-10. There’s just no comparison, just look at an episode like turn left for example, and then watch something like rings of Ahkaten. The doctor literally barking at an alien, Jenna’s cutesy head flicks, cringe one liners and over the top acting, Matt’s flapping and over the top performances. Yikes. Jenna is an amazing actress in things like Victoria and ‘The Cry’. But in Doctor who? Sometimes she was very poor.
Elliot Davies I get what you mean, there’s a fondness for nostalgia depending on what we grew up with, and I love Jenna’s performance in asylum of the Daleks. The only thing that lets that episode down for me is the cringe ‘Doctor who?’ chanting at the end. The Daleks decide to have an existential crisis and spin around in circles rather than.....exterminating an intruder on sight. All for a plot point that was never used again and retconned in time of the Doctor
Martha Jones was very good, and Freema Agyeman did her very well. She is smart and steadfast (and the plots challenge her that way beyond what most companions have seen), and also has a very big heart and a romantic streak. Talking to her mother on the phone while falling into the sun in "42", keeping watch over the Doctor in "Human Nature/The Family of Blood", spreading the word about the Doctor (and finding out the terrible secret of the Toclafane) in "Last of the Time Lords", and comforting her dying clone in "The Poison Sky": they gave her many scenes that could easily have degenerated into pretentious melodrama, but Agyeman consistently found a simple, starkly human expression that made them work.
Martha is my fav companion in the new series. She is smart, knows what to do, is a literal doctor and is rather independent and thoughtful. She literally saved the world by walking around the world as it fell around her due to the Master and Toclafane. She never got caught thanks to her perception filter in the year she walked the earth and only got caught because she let herself get caught. She was fearless in her impending execution the Master was gonna do to her, and had the courage to smile and scoff at the Master even while she was kneeling before him on the verge of being executed. Honestly Martha deserves more appreciation.
Honestly I love Martha especially because she’s poc and the way her character written is beautiful she’s engaging and smart and she really really cared for the doctor and she has so much trust in him she’s my favorite
I used to be part of the old doctor who fandom so I don’t know what’s going on now, but I always found it funny how the fandom in the old days used to say that Martha was horrible and how she was the worst character and interestingly she was the only black woman in the show... 🧐
I feel like Martha was shit on. she was a really good character and the series treated her like crap and stuff. nice to see a bit of love for Martha here
Martha and The Doctor were the dream team and I’m so mad how the fandom treated her :/ their sarcasm was iconic togetherrr!! she was (and still is!!) my favorite companion
HOLY SHIT THATS ACTUALLY TOM ELLIS holy shit i haven't finished doctor who yet i'm at the third season and i was thinking how great would it be to have tom ellis as the doctor if the series hadn't gone bad but he already starred in it 😭
Martha isn't my favorite, but she is a great companion for a number of reasons -She has personality and spunk -She's an actual doctor, making a nice foil to a man coasting on a medical profession's title -She's competent and gets stuff done -She's thinks for herself -She's honest and accepts when things don't work out (ex. the Doctor and her) -She's been through living for three months in the racist 1910s, being trapped by the weeping angels in the '60s, and surviving for a whole year on a war-torn earth just to save humanity - and STILL came out stronger.
Why does Hollywood keep making “powerful” females arrogant and snarky? Why can’t we have more women like Martha Jones? Martha Jones isn’t amazing because of some superpower or because she has advanced fighting skills or anything like that, Martha Jones is amazing because of who she is as a person. She doesn’t show she’s good through boasting about it, she shows that she’s good through her actions. We need more powerful, female characters like Martha Jones.
That’s true, but a lot of powerful male characters are arrogant and snarky too. Nothing wrong with having arrogance as a personality trait/flaw, the problem is when someone who constantly boasts about themselves and has a superiority complex is treated by the narrative as completely in the right and rarely ever wrong. That’s how a lot of ‘Mary Sue’ characters are born.
This Is My Username So I Hope You Like It Personally, I don’t dislike characters (male or female) that are arrogant or snarky. My problem is characters who’s arrogance is never shown as a flaw to shed or as an obstacle in their relationships with other people which happens a lot and is very unrealistic. Arrogant, unlikable characters can be done well, so long as they’re not idealized by the narrative.
@@morningchblossom2485 Omg I just finished watching Merlin and he threw me off the whole time. Because here he's just an average nice guy - totally different character. As King Cenred he had the whole Lucifer demeanor and it confused the hell out of me everytime he was on screen.
You know I can totally understand Martha's frustration in the episode Human Nature. The Doctor can plan for anything but he can't plan for his human self being an idiot.
She made the Doctor approach things he didn't like to talk about on HER timetable, not his. She was forced to be the problem solver of many of her adventures in place of the Doctor. She saved the world on her own. And then, she left on her own. Where most companions fall victim to one terrible circumstance or another that prevent them from continuing with the Doctor, Martha simply stepped away and found her own path for helping humanity advance. Martha Jones was the Doctor's Apprentice, and she was brilliant!
ill say it once ill say it again: martha would have been better for the doctor than rose: because she actually stood up to him and challenged him, and made him THINK instead of treating him like a king and accepting him as better and smarter without question. i fucking love martha jones, she was the first companion i ever met and she is the reason that i got into doctor who, i will die on this hill
Martha having the hots for the doctor is kinda milk toast but also...I can choose to see her humanity. She is badass, queen, steadfast, witty...and has a teeny tiny, massive crush on Doctor 10. I would ask "who wouldn't?" but then there is Donna and Me. 😅
The best companion. She’s clever enough to be a foil to the doctor whilst being compassionate and energetic. Perfect foil for Ten, and I love her growth into self acceptance across the series.
Martha is still my favorite companion. Amy comes close to being my favorite for how long she was with the Doctor and how close they became, to the point where the Doctor was like family. But Martha is so human. Her struggle with the Doctor and reason for leaving are so down to Earth and I find her compelling because she shows that the writers know that world ending conflicts in space and time don’t mean that interpersonal conflicts you’d see in real life don’t exist.
Yea amy had a very cool friendship with the doctor maybe cuz they were similar in age i guess but Martha shows a very real and human side ,alot was asked of her and her story shows how she was able to overcome the world with hardwork ,not super power .she's literally a doctor. Her whole story is about endurance. That's why i love the episode when they go to 1915. Only cuz its a family show we didn't see how they really would have talked to martha .she's just like ( i don't gotta fight cuz i know im better ) actually
You know what I'm about to say it... I honestly think Martha was a good companion because she saved the doctor in more ways than one and did so many feats without any superpowers at all.
it really wasn't fair what they did to martha. i think she got so much hate because: 1. she came right after rose, who was a fan favorite, and they were going to dislike _anyone_ who replaced her. 2. she fell in love with the doctor (honestly, can👏🏻 you👏🏻 blame 👏🏻her👏🏻???) i feel like they should have either kept martha's feelings platonic, or kept catherine tate as the companion in season 3 and added martha in season 4. but who knows if that would have subsided all the hate. either way, she was an amazing character and was probably more of an equal to the doctor than river song was. -because at least she didn't let her love for the doctor control her actions or feelings.- 🤭🤭
Seeing Martha in Torchwood more would be amazing...but I'd feel so awkward if the more risqué scenes included her. With Jack it's alright cause he's...Jack. But seeing a companion like Martha made a regular character in a show full of swearing and sex would be so weird.
LMAO right??!!? I can't believe Tom Ellis was in doctor who xD, and I remember him now too! I get a lot of this when I rewatch Charmed as well. Recognizing actors.
I think Rose is just overrated, aside from clara and bill I have preferred every other companion over Rose(I have refused to watch the female "doctor" and from what I hear it was a good decision).
@@lilchristuten7568 You've been listening to the wrong people. Jodie Whitaker is brilliant in the role. Part Tennant and part Smith. She makes a wonderful Doctor.

How? How do you neglect to include her most badass moment: the standoff with The Master? "Is that your weapon? PRAYER?" "Right across the world! But with fifteen satellites!"
Not only is Martha so underrated, she wasn’t mentioned as one of the greatest companions the Doctor ever had. But I want to shed light on something. She had a hard life and a hard time connecting with the Doctor, just like River Song. It honestly made me truly believe that she was the true mother of River Song, due to the glaring similarities in character. Some extreme, some not as, but it was there. Honestly, Amy Pond being mother to River truly felt like a cover up. The lengths that both Martha and River went to for the Doctor were grandiose. I definitely feel like that’s an episode that I genuinely would’ve loved to see on Doctor Who. Man, aside from everyone else who gets highlighted, those two felt like short lived gems that I wanted more of.
Not only is she photogenically beautiful, she has a burning fire within her when she's under stress, and it's not to be messed with! I remember growing up, people I knew never liked Martha... I didn't understand why because I loved her from the first episode. It was amazing watching her character grow, from vulnerable, polite and curious - to ultimate bad ass, strategic, unapologetic and forceful. In the end she learnt that she never needed the Doctor the way she originally wanted him, AND THAT IS SELF-EMPOWERMENT #boss
i know i'm late to this video but i'm revisiting it and i just have to say martha is probably one of if not the most badass of ten's companions. she literally took so many of the situations where any of the other companions would have been stuck and ran with it, taking control and getting everything fixed pretty quickly even without the doctors help. she honestly doesn't deserve the hate she gets- she's a great character. wish they'd treated her better in the end- least she got her happy ending, one of the only companions who can claim getting one, too.
Martha's always been my favourite companion, since she was the one I was first introduced to when watching Doctor Who. I can't stand believe how underrated she is. The Human Nature storyarch and the Season 3 finale were masterpeices. And let me tell you Stephen Moffat COULD NEVER write a character like that.
Finally someone I agree with and appreciates the finale. Martha tricking the Master and laughing in his face was one of her best moments, if not the best. Yes, Human Nature/Family of Blood along with the finale was the best episodes with her. She was so amazing and heroic.
Thank you for adding Torchwood! I absolutly adore the starting scene in that episode where she comes to Torchwood but we don't see her face yet, and Ianto is sort of condescending reading his magazin and saying that they are closing, and then she shows her ID. And Ianto is so scared, he knew he was fucked. That's right, boy, big boss is in town.
I love the way she is talked about in Torchwood. In Doctor Who there was s many times characters mainly the doctor did not show her the appreciation she deserved, but when she was in Torchwood, the characters talked highly of her, especially Jack. It was nice to just hear her being loved and appreciated for once. Like you said, I like that Ianto showed her that respect. He knew she was important. I wish we could have seen her with the Torchwood team more.

Now, a rant. By me Martha was a fantastic companion. She liked the Doctor but would do things her self. Take, for example,” I’ll do what I like.” She doesn't need the Doctor, to tell her what to do. While Rose was swooning over him and doing whatever he wanted until she became the dumbass in distress, Martha coped without him. She walked across the entire world, she came up with a plan to save the Doctor when no one else could. I'm pretty sure Rose would just cry during that. And, by the way, I'm talking about Rose with the Tenth Doctor. Not the Ninth. Another example, during 42 Martha did what the Doctor said to freeze him. She did just that. She was clever enough to come up with a plan or follow a plan and kept her cool. She didn't take anyone dissing her for her gender, race or anything else. She would gladly retort. Summary: In my OPINION, Martha was a far better companion than Rose was. Sidenote, I know it's unfair to talk about Rose when this is about Martha but I don't like it when people flip out on Martha just because she liked the Doctor. She was perfectly capable without him. Just because Rose was first. Rant over
Agreed. To me, Donna was the best companion to Ten, but Martha's season came second. Had they not forced the unrequited love storyline, Martha's run had some of my favorite episodes story-wise. Maybe if she hadn't been the followup to Rose, we wouldn't compare them so much. Also agree with Rose being better companion to Nine. I loved the back and forth with Eccleston. But I dislike Rose as a character overall so I guess I am a bit biased there. Martha had a grounded personality outside of her connection with the Doctor. Whatever Rose had, was not shown in a good light - she was awful to Mickey and that's about it. She was a teen and acted out accordingly. But her being the teen and then becoming the main love interest to the Doctor felt off to me. David's acting was what sold it, but story-wise it felt a bit forced.
Martha is amazing. Although Donna is my favourite. Martha encompassed bravery to another level. She was a mature and refreshing character. She isn't "The Woman who Walked the Earth" for nothing.
I partly agree with you. I definitely think Martha is one of the strongest characters and also one of the best companions the doctor has ever had, and I also agree with you that she was more independent than others. But I don‘t think that it‘s fair to Rose to say all that about her. Not only DID she know how to do stuff herself, she was also a character that had a deep impact on the doctor. He himself said that she changed him. So I‘m not saying that one character is less than the other, is less deserving of being the doctor‘s companion but rather that I like everyone the same. Everyone from Rose to Martha and Donna but also Sarah Jane and the others had their flaws but also did a lot of good. Both with the doctor and without him. So to conclude: I love every Doctor Who companion because and despite their flaws. And of course - the doctor himself.
Okay, fair enough but I feel like Rose fell flat with the 10 Doctor because her only personality was ’his lover’ she didn't really do much herself. To quote a comment further up ’she was a dumb teen and she acted accordingly’ I added the dumb but I felt she kind of was.
the fact that even RTD wishes he wrote better things for Martha speaks volume about how mistreated she was on the show

She was not the only companion with an unrequited crush (Amy), but she gets treated badly because the Doctor refused to look at anyone not actively forcing him to look at them, because he's caught up in missing the first person he connected with after the Time War.
tldr: Martha is an exceptionally good companion that doesnt fall into other companion stereotypes
despite her theme in the show being "miss overlooked" fans still overlook her
she’s the best companion i love her sm 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
Martha is so underrated. 11 seasons in and she's still the only nuWho companion who left the TARDIS willingly on her own terms. She realized their relationship was toxic, the Doctor didn't value her friendship enough, she'd always want more than friendship, yada yada, it'd never work. So she did the best possible thing for both of them and put a stop to it. And that's just 1 of the reasons why Martha Jones is badass, thank you
Damn right
Actually, there are other companions who left. Sarah Jane, in the classic series, for example.
I thought Martha left to take care of her Family?
It is kind of sad the new companions will mostly meet a horrible end to force them to leave the Doctor.
Martha’s a great companion yeah, but it’d be pretty boring if every companion was the same.
She's also not tied into any kind of destiny or prophesy or hidden connection with the doctor. She's just her own person with her own life and her adventures with the doctor were just one small part of it. As it should be.
And she got screwed over poor Martha
Even the dalek said she was smart (quite literally). That's canon.

Hannah Jayne I think so too! Sadly underrated. One of my favourite characters in the whonivers.

We love to see it 🙌🏽
👏👏👏👏
Honestly, Martha and Mickie getting married was probably one of the most beautiful things on the show. Two characters, both in love with people who don't value them enough for who they are. The Doctor only saw Rose. Rose only saw the Doctor. Martha and Mickie deserve each other.
well, I dont think they were in love with those people when they got married to each other.

Martha: Don't just stand there move!!!! GOd yOu'Re USelESs aS a HuMAn
Martha was my favourite companion of the new who. She's such a good character. It's a shame that many don't like her.

I'd like to think he learned his lesson with how badly he treated Martha. Also, different Doctors, different reactions.
Didn't he also basically spend ages in Victorian London grieving before meeting Clara. And then went to live in a 13th century monestry
Not at first, he tried to wipe her memory
Series 1-4 had the best acting.
ObiWan Kenobi the only ones that did awful were the 13th
Martha: you haven't got a plan
Doctor: yeah I do, the plan was to get in here
Martha: then what?
Doctor: uhhhhh come up with another plan
"Porn music starts playing*...

"Scared and holding a gun, good combination, want to risk it?"

Very well said, 100%
Well said
That’s true, but a lot of powerful male characters are arrogant and snarky too. Nothing wrong with having arrogance as a personality trait/flaw, the problem is when someone who constantly boasts about themselves and has a superiority complex is treated by the narrative as completely in the right and rarely ever wrong. That’s how a lot of ‘Mary Sue’ characters are born.
@@thenablade858 I know but if a male character is arrogant and snarky most people don't like him either

You know I can totally understand Martha's frustration in the episode Human Nature. The Doctor can plan for anything but he can't plan for his human self being an idiot.
And a Racist Idiot at that.

Yea amy had a very cool friendship with the doctor maybe cuz they were similar in age i guess but Martha shows a very real and human side ,alot was asked of her and her story shows how she was able to overcome the world with hardwork ,not super power .she's literally a doctor. it really wasn't fair what they did to martha. i think she got so much hate because:
1. she came right after rose, who was a fan favorite, and they were going to dislike _anyone_ who replaced her.
2. she fell in love with the doctor (honestly, can👏🏻 you👏🏻 blame 👏🏻her👏🏻???)
i feel like they should have either kept martha's feelings platonic, or kept catherine tate as the companion in season 3 and added martha in season 4. but who knows if that would have subsided all the hate.
either way, she was an amazing character and was probably more of an equal to the doctor than river song was. -because at least she didn't let her love for the doctor control her actions or feelings.- 🤭🤭
also i feel like they started off with a fantastic character and kinda let her slip down hill
"What else have you got, A laser spanner?"
"I did, but it was stolen by Emily Pankhurst, cheeky woman."
Honestly that is the best
Wish she'd stuck around on Torchwood for season 3, she was a great addition to the cast. Though on the bright side she dodged miracle day.
Seeing Martha in Torchwood more would be amazing...but I'd feel so awkward if the more risqué scenes included her. With Jack it's alright cause he's...Jack. But seeing a companion like Martha made a regular character in a show full of swearing and sex would be so weird.
Oh god ,if she was in that then I'd hate the show lol i already dont forgive torchwood for that
@@komlat253 Whats wrong with the show? oO

LUCIFER MORNINGSTAR
LMAO right??!!?
I can't believe Tom Ellis was in doctor who xD, and I remember him now too! I get a lot of this when I rewatch Charmed as well. Recognizing actors.
@@isbammoi3358 yesssss
Gary Preston (If anyone knows what I mean)
Martha is a character that just gets better the older you get, I didn't really like her as a child but as an adult I love her ❤
Martha is SUCH an underrated companion and it makes my heart swell seeing all this love for her in the comments ❤️
I love how she is a doctor in the show New Amsterdam 😂
shouldn't this be like her entire screentime
Is it just me who way preferred Martha to Rose? Honestly, she's so underrated.
You're not the only one
I think Rose is just overrated, aside from clara and bill I have preferred every other companion over Rose(I have refused to watch the female "doctor" and from what I hear it was a good decision).
@@lilchristuten7568 You've been listening to the wrong people. Jodie Whitaker is brilliant in the role. Part Tennant and part Smith. She makes a wonderful Doctor.
lil chris tuten LoL if you say “Doctor” because she’s female... Doctor Who doesn’t miss you
@@gina928 it's not a good adaptation of the doctor if it's just a mash of others. That's just boring. So much potential to create a great doctor now that she is a female but we got this. A waste.
How? How do you neglect to include her most badass moment: the standoff with The Master?
"Is that your weapon? PRAYER?"
"Right across the world!
Martha is so amazing. I really connected with her as a character. Her line about her being a doctor and the creature her patient is iconic to me.
Seiously, how can you not love her?!
I'm saying it until you do it.
The Doctor and River being an old married couple
preach!
They literally are.
Yes! I would love to see this video!
UP!
@allonsy.mp4
Not only is she photogenically beautiful, she has a burning fire within her when she's under stress, and it's not to be messed with!
I remember growing up, people I knew never liked Martha...
I didn't understand why because I loved her from the first episode.
It was amazing watching her character grow, from vulnerable, polite and curious -
to ultimate bad ass, strategic, unapologetic and forceful.
In the end she learnt that she never needed the Doctor the way she originally wanted him,
AND THAT IS SELF-EMPOWERMENT #boss
i know i'm late to this video but i'm revisiting it and i just have to say martha is probably one of if not the most badass of ten's companions. she literally took so many of the situations where any of the other companions would have been stuck and ran with it, taking control and getting everything fixed pretty quickly even without the doctors help. she honestly doesn't deserve the hate she gets- she's a great character. wish they'd treated her better in the end- least she got her happy ending, one of the only companions who can claim getting one, too.
Martha is so underrated I love her!
Constantly stuck between wanting Martha to get her own 10 but also so happy she left for self care
God, I love Martha so much. When she showed up in Torchwood I actually cried. It made me so happy to see her again.
She’s so clever and savage I love her
Thank you for adding Torchwood!
@@Meangrl19 EXACTLY, she made it so far in her UNIT career, everyone respected her, I feel kinda sad that she had to drop it at the end of RTD era
Hold the phone! Martha was engaged to Tom Milligan in sontaran stratagem, but she's married to Micky just later that season? The world is messed up
yeah they never cleared that up haha! i guess things just didn't work out.
but i think her and mickey are a perfect match so i'm not complaining
I think one of the creators said something about him being killed during the Dalek invasion in Stolen Earth/Journey's End. Not certain, though.
@@mollymaclachlanoh really? wow haven't heard that before.
bit similar to how people think clara's mum died in the auton invasion/shop explosion in s01e01. time wise it very much fits.
Tom Milligan died in the Dalek attack on earth, in Stolen Earth/Journey's End
@@dragonlcrd i actually think they just lumped them together to give fans closure. I dont think they fit with each other at all.
Great to hear she’s coming back, she is a very underrated companion!
The Doctor helping Shakespeare defeat witches with a spell from Harry Potter has got to be the most British thing the world has ever seen. AND I AM HERE FOR IT!!!
Now, a rant. By me
Martha was a fantastic companion.
I AGREE SO HARD!
