Love it or hate it I wish studios would make more big budget films like this. Everything nowadays is so safe and calculated. They need to take more risks on original concepts, and allow directors to fully realize their creative vision and potential.
@@Stuie299 This was an indie film thou, there are plenty of filmmakers taking risks in terms of indie films - Samuel Goldwyn Films disturbed and released this film, the studio is for arthouse films aka indie films thou, I agree i'd love to see more risk on films that weren't remakes, sequels, etc

You nailed Richard Kelly . This aged very well unfortunately.

Watched this with the mindset it was going to be Kelly’s Heaven’s Gate after hearing about it for years. Just watched it the other day and loved it, it was a bloated mess but also a lot of fun

This movie is alot better then what they give it credit for it's funny In a satirical way but it also gives you a bit of anxiety throughout the movie as Boxer uncovers the truth about his past and i think that's what they were going for

It's actually part of his character as a result of past trauma. Johnson likes to take risks with his characters. Watch him in THE RUNDOWN - he has no problem with poking fun at himself and his image. Part of what makes him such a bankable actor.

The prequel are books, they catch you up to what is happening in the movie. They tried to summarize it in the first part of the movie but the books bring more clarity. Hope this helps ; )
I don't know why I like it, but like many films, it's not so much a question of why, but rather that you like it, knowing that it's good for you to see it. Although, at the risk of sounding pedantic, it's not for everyone. In fact, the first time I saw it, I got angry 'cause I didn't understand it and therein lies the mistake, trying to make sense of it.

Wave of Mutilation by the Pixies. There are actually two versions - both excellent. This one is the UK Surf version, there is also the original. It also appears in the movie Pump up the Volume with Christian Slater which I was where I first heard it many years ago.

I absolutely love the world Richard Kelly created in Southland Tales. One of my favorite films, and imo, Dwayne Johnsons best acting role to date.
He's pretty generic at times, possibly due to casting in typical mainstream big budget movies, but a genuinely great actor!
