A movie doesn't have to make perfect sense to be a piece of art. I hate how people dislike Richard Kelly's films because they "don't get it" or "the story didn't make sense." It's so sad that the only thing people think a movie can be is just some story that entertains you for 2 hours. Why can't it be a piece of art that stays with you for years? Southland Tales doesn't make sense to me but I love it so much. I love that Richard Kelly's movies stay with you long after they're over.

Once you get to the point where you feel that everything around you in this society stops making sense, just like in this movie, you get the idea that you should forgive yourself for being you, just like you should forgive the other self. Life is a ride.Love is the only thing that is real. Enjoy your own movie.

Loved this film... hope it eventually gets the huge recognition it deserves. So much of the same crap thrown out there over and over in the theaters. This film was a huge daring statement on so many issues in the US when it came out and still today.
Might not have been a perfect film but it was definitely a piece of art. Acting was stellar at times, humorous, thought-provoking and so much more. Richard Kelley is far too ahead of the general population at this time.

Sometimes my friend, it's not the money that matters. Dwayne is noted saying: "He felt he had something to prove to other actors and directors. That he's not just muscle and mild comedy, that you can give him a part and he can play it. Just give him a chance." Sometimes... it's all about paying yourself in pride.

I don't understand why there was so much hatred for this movie. I just watched the 2.5 hour version and while it was never quiet, I didn't find it overwhelming. I admit, though, that i am a sucker for a good score and I thought the music and score throughout were just amazing. I think I'm going to have to watch it again to fill in the blanks, though. Agreed, while it was an epic fail as Kelly tried so hard to do so much... the theatrical release is still solid after a few watches, while the 160 minute Cannes Film Festival Cut is by far the best format. This is slowly gaining cult status over the years, more and more people are beginning to actually understand the message, like the "twin Sean William Scotts" are really just "learn to forgive yourself for being you" and so on.... though the film is entirely full of subtle messages.

Dwayne, in this movie, was a representation of society. His amnesia, represents that society has forgotten who it is, and what it is. The fact he's making a movie on it is representation, is that society sees it's own future without realizing it and wants to believe it's not real. The blood on his back at the end shows society is dying, and will die before the rest of the world falls. Ergo - Blimp = the world, crashing to it's death by the hands of a fate it designed. That answer it for ya?
