- If you love riding your bike when you’re young, it’s natural to dream of wearing the yellow jersey of the Tour de France, or winning a sprint around the velodrome after a gruelling Paris-Roubaix. Pro cycling is a demanding sport that pushes you to your limits like few others, so why would we even want to become a professional cyclist? As a recent ex-pro, Conor Dunne is the perfect person to share the story of how he got hooked on pro racing, and offer some tips to aspiring pros.

Is it your dream to be a pro cyclists? Let us know 👇
Yes
That's a fantastic and beautiful video. Connor, you're a great lad altogether, you are the best presenter on GCN, the other lads are just a bunch of freds.
Yes im 15 Years old and it is my big dream!
IT IS my biggest dream 🥰
I want to be a pro cyclist🤩. I am 19 now but with the pandemic it is hard to break true becouse nearly al races in the netherlands are canceld 😭
Makes me want to go pro! I’ve got the drive, I’ve got the heart, I’ve got the dedication But it might be a tall order... I’m 55!
You can still race no matter your age. If you are in the US there are the Senior Olympics. Enter in your state or one close to you, if you podium you qualify for the nationals. I have seen some of the races and group rode with some friends who enter and let me clue you they are not Sunday rec riders. There are a lot of races or crits you can enter (I love the crits). If you are not in the US there are world senior games in the US that offer cycling. Most require that you have a USA cycling license or an international license except the Olympics.
Mr. Dunne, you're an absolute lad, that was inspiring
I shaved my legs while still at school.....and by the time I started university I'd almost finished
Connor favourite presenter to tell a story, he's got a smile in his voice that man.
Seems like in the end, Conor was one of the most successful racers out there whether he got his hands in the air or not.
One of the best GCN vids for a long while. Great stuff Connor
Hear Hear!
Indeed, GCN videos have become boring and have lost that something that they shared in the beginning when it was just Matt, Simon and Dan, before it became all about there pay channels and money. Their meddling in political and social matters also put me off, hence my unsubscribe from GCN, this video just appeared on my watch list, and I too thought the video was refreshing for a change.
Thanks Tony, that's super nice to hear. Glad you enjoyed this one!
@@conordunne219 apologies for spelling your name wrong
Conor's dad sounds like an A1 chap - fully supporting his son's passion. He has produced a fine young lad who is inspiring not only his daughter but a whole generation of cyclists. Dido for Hank's dad. But my personal favorite dad is Manon's as he looks great in those white Cervelo Test team shorts.
More videos like these please! That was fantastic to hear cronors story!
Thank you!! Glad you liked this one :) Had a lot of fun creating this video and there are plenty of bloopers from the rugby ball scene too ha
@@conordunne219 Ah man! You replying totally made my day! Keep up the great work!
Got chills while watching....AWESOME!!
Thanks Andrea :)
This is the video I needed to see today. Even though I started cycling fairly late in life and now I’m a middle-aged man out racing for Strava KOMs against the young guys, there are definite applications from Conor’s story. “Do it because YOU love it” seems so simple, yet is so wise.
Thanks Mark.. one of the best pieces of advice I've ever been lucky enough to receive. From my Uncle Paul actually!
Conor, you were in the break on mountain stages if I recall. And national champ. Amazing adventure
That was AWESOME....thank you Conor ! Be safe .
I’m fifteen, wanting (of course) to go pro. I’ve been shaving my legs for two years and spend all of my time riding my bike. When I can’t ride I just clean my bike again, then again. Love it!
Inspiring AF, got me all emotional. Thank you Conor. Cannot wait to race more this year for points when we are allowed. I'll never make pro, but I bloody love cycling!
Thanks Noah, me too! I'm really looking forward to giving racing a go again soon.. just for the sheer joy of being in a bunch, great feeling.. I'll try one attack but won't get far. Good luck buddy!
I love what I do. Thank you for this video GCN🥰
Go on Ed!!! :)
What a video ! I didn't expect this from the title
Great video, epic edit and Conor is a first class presenter! 🤩🤟
Thank you!
more videos like this please gcn, feels fresh and would be great to see something from each presenter....
I didn't start cycling until I was 26 I fell in love with it I rode in the morning before work and after into the night. I Just won my first my first crit race here in Utah. Will I ever become the next woot? No of course not but my goal is to become an amateur! My point is it doesn't matter when you start cycling it's about the love for it and if you want to compete GO COMPETE!
Of course he went to Belgium
We Belgians love cycling a lot ... and we see ourselves as the land of cycling (although the Colombians are pretty cycling crazy too)
I wish this was a full documentary on GCN+. Great video and amazing story
Just started cycling at 32 yrs old. As a kid I used to win all the competitions but my parents weren’t supportive and eventually stopped (they sold my bike). Now I ride and it feels like Im alive again. I’ll ride till I die!
What a feel good video. One of the best presenters on the show
I've just come back home after a ride. Now I just want to jump back on my bike and take another ride!
yes George, fill the pockets with bananas and get back out there!! Thanks for watching !!
Conor: a massive credit to the GCN crew, and the world of cycling. Top man.
Probably one of the best GCN videos ever. Connor really nails it and comes across like a genuinely super nice and thoughtful guy.
What a great reminder of the one thing we all share: the love for cycling! Inspiring stuff. Cheers Conor👍
This is just one of the best GCN videos I've seen in a long time! Connor is awesome, I can't turn pro, too old, but I really appreciate this glimpse into what it takes.
What a video!!!
The pacing, the edit, the works.
Simply sublime 👏👏👏
Connor, this presentation brought a tear to my eye. Well done!!!
Simply one of the best videos GCN has ever put out. I’m 50 and feel as though I could turn pro. Inspirational Connor, thank you!!!
Ooh....your daughter is such an angel.
I qualified for the Kenyan National Team way back in 1979 but (fortunately) was wise enough to know couldn't make a career out of it.
The leaders of Govt were so corrupt to the point of selling our team Italian racing bikes and stealing right up to our food and hotel allowances for themselves was heartbreaking, so I decided might as well do what I was born to do. Become an Engineer. 😃
No regrets though because I found my true calling years later and became a devastating rally driver in cars I built myself.
Thank you so much that was just the motivation I needed
Seriously good video Conor. Felt fresh and different on GCN after all these years!
Awesome. Such an uplifting video. Great message Connor!
This was a great vid. Very inspirational. Nice work, Connor and the crew!
YES....I'm all hopped up on a good montage......and a cpl of beers. IM GOING PRO THIS WEEKEND.
If my wife let's me.
What an amazing video, I had aspirations of becoming a pro rower before I realised I didn’t have the consistency for a pro athlete but this video just gets my heart racing in the same way
I've wanted GCN since 2014 this was probably there best video ever. Beautiful job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lovely video 😍 loved the background music 👍
What a brilliant video. Great advice condensed into a short inspirational video, quality!

Connor, you are true inspiration to live life and enjoy! Thanks and...Let The Force be with you!🖖
Thank you!! May the force be with you too !!
🤜🤛🙌 What a motivational episode ! Thank you 🔥
In my opinion, that was the single best and most inspirational video GCN has yet made. Bravo.
I fell in love with cycling, i’m 26 maybe is too late to think about competing and try to become a pro, but every time im riding my bike i have a huge smile in my face, its all that matters to me.
Conors best video yet! LOVED IT! Very motivating.
Best inspirational video ever.... I vote for it to be used on GCN Show Inspiration segment 👍👍🤙
Is it just me, or has the video editing/production of GCN really improved of late?
This is really great video, thanks Connor
Such an inspiring story ...Thank you so much.
Inspiring and well put together video, Connor and team! I'm now itching to go out and rip it up on my bike :D
That was a really lovely little film, Connor. Thank you

one of my favourite vids from you guys! Love it haha
Wonderful, personal and inspirational
If you'd only done this 30 years ago. Maybe, just maybe I'd have pushed that bit harder. Inspirational young man. Inspirational. And chapeau you truely earned respect. Great Video. Probably one of the best this year.👍
Such a great video loved it.

Great vid Connor!!!
Awesome and inspiring video, Conor! Please make an extended version one day with longer video clips and stills for us old guys (Dan‘s generation 😉)
I'm just a recreational cyclists, averaging 28-33 km/h every rides, never had a dream to become a pro cyclists and neverbut I don't know why this video is so touching and motivates me a lot about this hobby I love 😊😊
Awesome advice Conner
Great film 👏🏻
Best GCN piece ever....
It just occurred to me... Conor is the Arnold Schwarzenegger of Cycling!!! 😄 I really really like his sense of humor and overall good vibes in life. You've got a true fan here, Mr Conor Dunne! Im sure you have a lovely family. Best regards to all of you guys!!! 😊
Very well produced. This should be on the main channel!
Other reasons for moving to Belgium are available.... (and amost certainly hurt your legs less).
Cracking video though, and makes Conor look an even more relatable bloke than before...
That’s an inspiring video. Connor is a great guy.
Great video!
Used to love seeing Conor attacking off the front on some of the non world tour races. He was always a power house....Sinatra style rider 🥰
I see you Conner trying to win GCN cycling inspiration!
But really, I love it!!!
Wow what a vid great job conor
Very cool video 👍
This is my fav video ever
Best bit of advice for an aspiring athlete in any sport, get an education too! Great video Connor
Contender for inspiration of the week
Well done!!!!!
nice video...thanks
That was good I enjoyed that shame aqua blue went after a year I was cheering them on in the Vuelta (thought the kits looked pretty cool too)
At least Connor finished I doubt I could even do one climb in a vuelta they are all brutes.
Love you Mr. Dunne!
Damn, that was really quite moving!
I never thought I had the talent so pro was never going to happen. I got to 1st cat and raced in Holland and Germany. I feel very lucky to have done that. This was in the 1980s. With the arrival of power metres in more recent times and with a bit of backward calculations I realise I could probably never have gone better than I did, I just didn’t have the genes. I used to race with a guy who did turn pro. In the 80s there was always a ‘way’ to go faster but I’m glad I never took that route. My career took off and that was it. Didn’t ride again for 25 years.
That was beautiful!
Ya pretty inspiring Mr. Dunne!!! But you didn’t mention your your win in The Raś and what about your pro stepping stone of An Post Cycling team OR even any pics of them......?????😜
That was a nice and lighthearted chronology of your life as a passionate bike rider. Knowing what sacrifices it takes in the pursuit of becoming a pro rider and not achieving it. How did you come to terms with that?
Fair dues Conor!!
Something so hard, painful and basically unpleasant has never sounded so inspirational 🤩
Conor, damnit! I cried.... Well done!
awww bobby!! Thanks for watching man, glad you enjoyed this one
Brilliant 👏
1:03 im sure we all relate to this
Legend 👍
