  • If you love riding your bike when you’re young, it’s natural to dream of wearing the yellow jersey of the Tour de France, or winning a sprint around the velodrome after a gruelling Paris-Roubaix. Pro cycling is a demanding sport that pushes you to your limits like few others, so why would we even want to become a professional cyclist? As a recent ex-pro, Conor Dunne is the perfect person to share the story of how he got hooked on pro racing, and offer some tips to aspiring pros.

You can still race no matter your age. If you are in the US there are the Senior Olympics. Enter in your state or one close to you, if you podium you qualify for the nationals. I have seen some of the races and group rode with some friends who enter and let me clue you they are not Sunday rec riders. There are a lot of races or crits you can enter (I love the crits). If you are not in the US there are world senior games in the US that offer cycling. Most require that you have a USA cycling license or an international license except the Olympics.

Indeed, GCN videos have become boring and have lost that something that they shared in the beginning when it was just Matt, Simon and Dan, before it became all about there pay channels and money. Their meddling in political and social matters also put me off, hence my unsubscribe from GCN, this video just appeared on my watch list, and I too thought the video was refreshing for a change.

Conor's dad sounds like an A1 chap - fully supporting his son's passion. He has produced a fine young lad who is inspiring not only his daughter but a whole generation of cyclists. Dido for Hank's dad. But my personal favorite dad is Manon's as he looks great in those white Cervelo Test team shorts.

This is the video I needed to see today. Even though I started cycling fairly late in life and now I’m a middle-aged man out racing for Strava KOMs against the young guys, there are definite applications from Conor’s story. “Do it because YOU love it” seems so simple, yet is so wise.

I didn't start cycling until I was 26 I fell in love with it I rode in the morning before work and after into the night. I Just won my first my first crit race here in Utah. Will I ever become the next woot? No of course not but my goal is to become an amateur! My point is it doesn't matter when you start cycling it's about the love for it and if you want to compete GO COMPETE!

Ooh....your daughter is such an angel.
I qualified for the Kenyan National Team way back in 1979 but (fortunately) was wise enough to know couldn't make a career out of it.
The leaders of Govt were so corrupt to the point of selling our team Italian racing bikes and stealing right up to our food and hotel allowances for themselves was heartbreaking, so I decided might as well do what I was born to do. Become an Engineer. 😃
No regrets though because I found my true calling years later and became a devastating rally driver in cars I built myself.

I never thought I had the talent so pro was never going to happen. I got to 1st cat and raced in Holland and Germany. I feel very lucky to have done that. This was in the 1980s. With the arrival of power metres in more recent times and with a bit of backward calculations I realise I could probably never have gone better than I did, I just didn’t have the genes. I used to race with a guy who did turn pro. In the 80s there was always a ‘way’ to go faster but I’m glad I never took that route. My career took off and that was it. Didn’t ride again for 25 years.
