Banning sth that never caused a crash is what you do if you pretend to improve safety but don't want to put work in it. But let's allow sharp turns or downhill in the last km of sprint stages because..? Just look at tour of turkey or poland each year.
The UCI can’t even enforce the most dangerous rule of them all - sprinter deviation. Yet, even with no know problem, they create a teammate celebration rule. How about they actually ban people from deviating and then let’s talk.
I think that this rule applies if you are (a) decelerating during a sprint and (b) endangering other riders. The words in brackets are examples of “endangering other riders”. So in your first example, there is no danger to other riders, so no breach. A cycling lawyer.
What has not caused a crash (to my memory): riders celebrating race victories What has caused a crash: barriers, poor sprinting form (abdujabarov eg), motos, poor course design, diesel on wet roads, etc, etc. These guys TT at 50+km/hr but the end of every time trial event is still 50m of straight post-finish line road, followed by 150 photogrpahers on the road in front of them, then a 90 degree road turn into buses, broadcast equipment and various gubbins. Highly, highly unsafe. UCI: bans celebrating race wins, bans long socks Your previous video asked how we could improve cycling. The obvious answer is replace the UCI with people that actually think things through.
Please enlighten me: when was the last crash caused by a teammate celebrating another teammate’s win?? Unless I’m missing something, this is another ludicrous rule from the UCI. Some of the most iconic sprint images include teammates celebrating another teammate’s win (just look at many examples of Cav’s lead-out men with their hands in the air). UCI Fun Police strike again. Next thing you know they will be measuring sock height…
In the junior cat it's aready forbidden for a while I think they banned it because the youger (and sometimes less skilled) riders copy it and in the junior races it can be quite dangerous.
I was particularly pleased to see Esther Wong (Hess Cycling Team) win the senior women's Irish CX championships. I coached her -- at a Go-Ride club when she was about 8 years old!
I actually think it’s probably a smart rule to have in place. While I can’t recall a time where there was a crash or incident, it would not be surprising to me at all if it happened
But then again most things could lead to dangerous situations. You would have to ban a lot of things which, like in this case, have not lead to dangerous situations.
Riders will have to take more risks in corners to carry more speed on downhills because they cant make up for the lack of cornering speed by pushing afterwards. So the change of making everyone slower does sound good at first but since riders will try going for the maximum it can improve risks taken imo
it seems that the UCI has nothing better to do than continue to find things to ban! It would seem that if the "celebration" does in fact impede a rider or causes a "danger" at the end of a stage, sure I get it. If it doesn't, PLEASE leave the riders alone! The celebration at the end is all cyclist have if their team has won it. The UCI should be more concerned with making the sport more exciting and attractive to a wider audience. Banning team celebrations doesn't seem to fit that simple concept. Be careful what you ask for!
I didn't watch this video only because I read about this 3 days ago. I have mixed feeelings about this new rule. On one hand it makes sense because you have teammates throwing their hands up in celebration as their teammate wins a bunch sprint which is a sudden decrease in speed but on the other hand its just another example of the UCI doing the absolute bare minimum to keep the safety of the riders a top priority. UCI has always been a joke and each year it makes up new and usually stoopid and worthless rules when there are other things that could be changed to keep the riders safe but this rule isn't as stoopid as some previous rules put into play in previous seasons. This one makes a bit more semse to me than some of the other rules that have been implemented in previous seasons 🤘🏻🏴
Makes sense I’ve no problem with it.. Plenty time to celebrate when everyone is off their bikes. And Dan, your soccer analogy is flawed. When a goal is scored the game is fully stopped. Not the case in cycling when a stage is won.
I think one thing that should have been mentioned in the CX segment is having Joris Nieuwenhuis back at competition. We were missing him all season, specifically with the great one he had last year. He had some health problems, I heard.
I'm sure if the USI banned celebration only after a huge crash there would be people asking why does a crash have to happen for things to change. Good on them for trying to keep riders safe.
@@aarondcmedia9585 sir this comment is trying to say that this is a potentially good move from the uci while it’s never caused an issue it absolutely could and preventing something before it happens is the number one rule of safty you don’t wait till a rider dies to ban something this is a ruling by the uci to prevent injuries not to respond to one
This video shows the text regarding the new rules and I’m staggered at how badly GCN have misinterpreted it… it’s not about celebrating… it’s about suddenly slowing down in the middle of bunch sprint for any reason. How did you conclude this from ready that Dan?
If a rider celebrates their teammates win by slowing up and getting in the way of other riders then that could cause accidents and riders behind want to get the best standings in the race. Yes this will be hard to judge, if a fellow rider celebrates their teammates win and he/she is not in front of anyone then yeah they should be allowed to celebrate also. With replay video this could be determined. This has been brought to the UCI's attention probably because situations as such has happened.
I find the talk of improving safety by reducing speed ridiculous. I would guess that the increases in speed in modern cycling are proportionately very small. Crashes primarily occur in close bunches due to rider error and descending at high speed due to rider error. Improved tyre grip technology and increased rider skill/confidence are the main contributors to increased speed in technical areas where a small error has big consequences. Course designers need to reduce the risks by better planning, barriers and use of foam paddingl as used in motorcycle road racing. If you compare this to motorcycle racing the most dangerous racing is often in the junior classes on slower machinery of identical power simply due to the closeness of the pack.
What is in the lower left corner of the video (Dan's right side)? Looks like a steady puff of smoke coming up. I'm picturing Oli under the table igniting farts with a lighter.😆
Dan comparing a futbol celebration to a lead out rider slowing down is just dumb. As far as I know opposing team players are not near the players in the futbol celebration.
Just ban mass racing and keep it time trials only. Removes all extraneous factors interfering with your performance. Since most safety issues are due to the interactions of riders in a competitive situation, banning group races solves all these problems. Some sports keep it individual events only, I see no reason why all sports can’t do the same. Downhill racing, shooting sports etc. no mass racing no problem
UCI should ban everything not allowed to sprint not allowed to be fast not allowed to be slow😂😂 not allowed to bring water bottles... And you know whats the best. UCI should ban it self😂😂
Riders should stop celebrating until they themselves have past the finish line. Not only team mates, but also the winners themselves. Anything else is just stupid at the very least and dangerous at it's worst. In my opinion the only reason for this celebrating before the finish is to please, and showcase the sponsors on the front of the shirt.
UCI should look for other things than celebrating teammates. This takes out the fun watching a finish of a race. There hasn't been any accident right? It's a BOTCH!
What is the confusion? You can see with your own eyes when it’s putting surrounding and following riders at risk. Muppets with arms raised “look at me, look at me” at the worst time and place. Too harsh?
The Australian champs men's race was terrible. Jayco had 6 riders, against a bunch of mainly domestic riders and a few pros who didn't have a team with them. Jayco rider predictably goes up the road and the rest of the Jayco team spend all day blocking in the bunch. It made for boring racing. Then Plapp bridges up and throws the race and gives it to his team mate, who spent all day in the break. Lame. It was good see Liam Walsh get on the podium as he's a domestic rider who doesn't have a contract with a major team. Hopefully that changes soon!!
What do you think of the UCI banning team celebrations? 🤔
Pretty silly of them
not sure, i can think of times when the winner celebrating has caused a crash. have never seen this happen because of a teammate celebrating though.
Hogwash !

UCI: ban things for "safety reasons".
Me: Why are they racing in a torrential downpour of rain?🤷♂
And why do they have such insane finishes for sprint stages?
And why do they race in insane temperatures?
And why do they race without elbow and knee pads?
@@youngloudandscotty There are not enough Americans to worry about?

I guess the UCI wants to appear that they’re doing something for rider safety without fixing the worst issues of road safety
I agree with the ban on team mate celebrations - it's a pain in the ass for other riders - this wasn't really a problem before rider radios !🤔👍🏻🚴🏻♂️
The fact my little old town of perth made it on GCN is mind blowing
More safety washing by the UCI. It is easier to make meaningless changes in the name of safety rather than doing anything serious and effective
I think it's more the slowing of other riders, than causing a crash, but I think it'll depend on how it's enforced.
2:04 what about the (too early) celebration of Julian Alaphilippe at Liège Bastogne Liège? 😅
A lead out is tough work. Let them celebrate.

Bugger about Caleb. Grass is always greener on the other side, unless its astroturf ;)
In womens races the fines imposed for celebrating a team mates win will be more than the prize money!
Using that celebration photo of the Rangers at Ibrox is definitely a highlight😂
Definitely not many photos of Sevco celebrating
Next: UCI ban cycling
Came here to say that 😂
it would certainly keep the riders safe.🤣
There's a word that comes to mind when i think of the UCI rule makers...... It rhymes with hats.
I think one thing that should have been mentioned in the CX segment is having Joris Nieuwenhuis back at competition. We were missing him all season, specifically with the great one he had last year. He had some health problems, I heard.
Have the UCI ever had a good idea.
Rides a bike and tempts death itself at 70k/hr downhill in the rain. Also can't throw a fist up in victory after suffering for hours...
When you see a rule ask yourself why. They never dreamed this up on their own.
Surely most teammates keep their line if they move out off position that’s going to cause a crash
winners should be able to go across the finish line topless, with perky parts in full view.
Need to get GCN and the gang onto Bluesky

what the peloton needs to do is the old 'I am sparticus' trick and everyone raise their arms... stupid ban IMO.
Dan! You're looking strong, stretched, and centered. Are you going to unretire and race this year?

I don't want to see another guy raising his arms other than the winner.
And no crazy spectator controls
The no-celebration rule is definitely the dumbest one yet (and they have come up with some pretty dumb ones lately!).
Did anyone ask the riders? There are already rules in place for dangerous riding. This seems excessive.
I think this is a great idea! celebration in a pack going full speed is stupid!
I’m in the “meh, who cares” category. The race doesn’t end until the finish line, cross that then celebrate
BREAKING NEWS.
UCI bans smiling, and enjoying your racing.
(For safety reasons, obvs)
Why did GCN use a photo of Rangers celebrating? I'm sure they were celebrating winning a 0-0 draw

Celebration in a way that causes a danger that would not have been present without that celebration is bad judgement.
UCI creating rigorous safety standards that don't require any action or accountability on their part... big surprise.
they should ban celebrating before cross the finish line
Beautiful new set, wow
gcn is top - thanks that you are here for us cycling fans
UCI is taking “The Fun Police” literally. 😢
You can celebrate but, both hands must be on the handle bars, not leaning to far forward..... or backwards.... or to the side !
Maybe the UCI should just ban fun and Christmas while they're at it. They have a habit of focusing their efforts and energy in the wrong places
please ban the finish line!!!!! you start and you have to find the arrive in a range of 150km. it is more safe: no sprint at all.
UCI got tired of seeing Pogacar celebrate.
Teammates celebrating always looked stupid to me.
they should ban the swaying sprinters...
Dan comparing a futbol celebration to a lead out rider slowing down is just dumb. As far as I know opposing team players are not near the players in the futbol celebration.
How bout banning AND DETECTING PEDS FIRST. Then the minor stuff 😂
The UCI have some recurring issue with celebrations. They banned hands off a few years back, that failed, and are now back for more.
I think that the first across the line should only celebrate. Not for safety reasons.
Absolute insanity.
Another saddo uci official sat in their office looking to make their mark.

Road racing in any area where the infrastructure is designed for pedestrians/non-racing cyclists will always involve more road furniture.
