This is a video about supporting unions and workers' rights.
UPDATE 2017: After a long, long fight, workers at this hotel have finally won the right to organize a union: pbn.com/Renaissance-Providenc...
Press Inquiries: joeldefrancesco@gmail.com
FAQ:
1. Q: Why is your name bleeped out but you have your real name in your username?
A: When we first uploaded it I bleeped my name out and didn't have my real name on anything related to the video. Once it began to get popular, I realized I could do more by attaching my name to it than by hiding from it (see my website/other videos/etc.) RUclips doesn't allow you to reupload videos so the name is bleeped out even though I used my real name online now.
2. Q: What's the backstory?
A: I worked in this hotel for 3.5 years. I worked while going to school full time to pay my tuition and living expenses. This was not a job I had for two weeks before quitting in a fit.
The working conditions in the hotel were horrendous. In the kitchen, workers were regularly forced to work 10, 11, 14, 16 hour shifts that begin at 5:30AM and lasted well into the night. Housekeepers were reprimanded if they failed to clean 16 rooms or more in a 9 hour shift. Anyone who spoke up-especially anyone who is openly pro-union-was disciplined or fired. Managers, like Jared, screamed down employees daily.
I worked extremely hard to change the conditions in the hotel. My co-workers and I organized ourselves to push back against management and demand respect. I was one of many workers who led the fight to organize a formal union at the hotel.
The hotel ran a vicious union-busting campaign. They punished and fired pro-union workers, spread lies in captive-audience meetings, and generally attempted to scare the workers out of joining the union. Still, through being organized and threatening to form a union, we won countless victories, including raises, new uniforms, lower housekeeper room quotas, etc.
When I decide to quit the hotel, I made this video to send one last message to management.
After many years, and the brave continued fight of the workers, the hotel finally recognized the union in 2017. I quit my job in 2011, and the workers who stayed at the hotel and continued fighting are the heroes of this story. Support workers everywhere!
3. Q: What's the song?
A: The song is a version of the Balkan tune "Bubamara," arranged and performed by the band in the video 'What Cheer? Brigade' (which I used to be in)

Him instantly saying get the hell out without having any understanding of what's going on says all it needs to say
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.
You instantly see why he quit as soon as the manager starts speaking.
Made no effort to find out what was going on , just instantly started barking orders in a condescending tone and even though resignation letters can be important pieces of evidence in a labor dispute or lawsuit , he just let it fall to the floor and walked away.
Someone was promoted beyond their ability.
I agree with you completely. This video is actually an epic fail. Joey did not serve the notice on his boss. Boss man cleverly put his hands behind his back once he saw what was happening. Lol fuck that guy
That accident poster wasn’t about worker safety-it was about “lost time accidents”. Basically an accident in which the owner loses a few pennies profit...
And is wrongfully written in spanish...
What's a lost time accident?
I noticed that. It was such a hilarious sign. "lost time accident" what a joke, like it's a factory or something. Only someone who had a stick really far up their ass would even want a sign like that.
It means if your piss break lasts 6 minutes instead of 5, you caused a lost time accident for the poor owner.
Lost-time accidents are assumed to be more severe because the person is unable to work due to the injury. They are tracking those instead of all accidents so that the the team isn’t demoralized by the small, first aid type injuries and also to help ensure that all accidents get reported (for compliance and injury tracking purposes). Lost-time injuries can actually cost an organization tens of thousands of dollars in insurance costs, time devoted to managing the claim, time devoted to re-hiring and re-training someone else, decreased moral, slowed production, etc. This is the philosophy surrounding the sign, and I don’t really agree with it btw. It is pretty lame to have this sign up anywhere especially in a hotel. Im not defending them just chiming in, because I’m sure this massive company gives very little fucks if someone is permanently injured at work and only sees the dollar signs. Probably the corporate safety person’s idea who only visits once per quarter and gets all pissed if it isn’t right.
I worked at a Hotel and was also treated like shit and quit on the spot. Screw your 2 weeks notice! Good for him! LOVE IT!!
The two week notice is only useful if you want to use your boss as a reference. And also being courteous, but if you flat out can’t stand your job, just walk out and don’t say a word.

Ya I just saw it too….12 years later
This guy became an absolute legend to everyone employed in this hotel at the time
The fact the manager wouldn’t even take the letter just showed what a personality type he was: Petty. I can understand why he would be nervous seeing a brass band in his hotel and wouldn’t want anything upsetting paying guests, so I can understand the “get out now” reaction… but he stared down at that bit of paper and would rather it fell to the floor and litter his hotel hall, than dignify his employee. The boss is a petty despot, and I’ve worked for enough of them to recognise them instantly.
or maybe his he waiting till the band that was trespassing left.
@@ctufan24 again, bend the knee some more.
@@totalrobot Way to comprehend. Like it has nothing to do with his safety. 🙄.... maybe look at his from his prospective instead of just jumping to conclusions.
Or maybe YOU try and be objective and take on board the two opinions you’re encountering here, instead of stubbornly trying to play devil’s advocate to this manager with zero charm and zero people’s skills i the video. Any socially intelligent person can tell immediately he’s a ‘David Brent type’ manager, from his posture, body language and what struck me most - his facial impression. He took longer time to stare at the piece of paper being handee to him and then to look back up at his employee with a poker face, with a ‘I won’t take it’ stare… than the time it would of taken him to have just taken it! So your assertion that he was waiting for the band to leave before he dignified the piece of paper is asinine. He was being petty, and shows himself to be immature. The fact is, he probably isn’t much older than the staff he is managing and I suspect he can get quite unprofessional feeling he is never accepted as part of the team, because he has to manage the team. I’m certain he’s used to be handed resignations - he was being petty and the fact you try a defend him makes me think one of two things about YOU… CTUFAN24. I have the distinct feeling you’ve not had many jobs in customer service or hospitality - or that you have, but as a manager. In my experience these jobworth managers with inflated egos are often socially awkward, joyless and resent the team for having fun and often a male manager might pick a popular male staff member to punish and make an example of. It’s a story as old as time. I’m glad this guy left and knew he was being tormented - I usually don’t jump to conclusions and try and see things from two sides, but in this instance - I’m going to trust my instincts, I’ve lived long enough to recognize a douchebag when I see one - and it’s not only the manager in the video I’m talking about. @@ctufan24
@@ah7910 lol, lot to try to unpack there. First It's ironic that your criticism of me of how "any socially intelligent person" can tell what type of manager that guy was.. all while having grammatical & incomprehensible sentences. I am looking at it from both sides; The fact that in this kids Q&A he's complaining about having to work shifts as low as 10-12 hours (which is normal for full-time employees) makes me question the work ethic. The manager did sound like a dick, along with possibly other toxic employees; That's on me for not stating my observation from the other side. Secondly don't you think there would be pause to his reaction considering how he gets blindsided by an employee around the corner with half a dozen unknowns in a restricted area?... for all he knows he could be getting jumped. On top of the fact that it was only 2 seconds from when the employee reached out to give his letter of resignation before letting it fall.... like he wasn't possibly intentionally not giving his boss the chance to capitalize on this whole "f*** y** moment? Just like "totalrobot" you miscomprehended it when I spelled it out to him in response; It had nothing to do with "dignifying the acceptance of resignation, but rather his safety... group of random strangers trespassing with band instruments being loud & obnoxious, goofy around as their leaving. All this IS taking place in a place of business. It's not like that would be the norm. Out of the 2 of them in the video you seriously think the manager was less mature? The guy looks to be in his upper 30's, while this worker looks to be in his mid to late 20's. That's part of the management position; Your not the employee's "friend", your their boss. You couldn't be more wrong in your assumptions "AH7910"; In regards to how many customer service jobs I've had: 9 within a 15 year span, and no Management positions. Criticizing on making assumptions yet bashing all managers on a one size fits all with having: inflated egos, lack of social skills (quite the opposite of what's required for that position), joyless & resentful because other members of the team are having fun?!? Your misinterpreting managers disciplining employees goofing off on the jobs their being paid to do? Don't know where your getting this whole manager persecuting an individual employee as an example to the others. You stated that I should: "be objective" and see it from the perspective of the other 2 commentators on here; yet contrarily state: "I usually don't jump to conclusions and try to see things from two sides, but in this instance I'm going to trust my instincts" which means you are only looking at it from one side. Based on the last half of your comment I'm going to assume one or more of the following: you haven't been in the job market very long, haven't had much variety of employers and/or positions & I suspect your working in a restaurant or retail job.
I wonder what Joey has done the last 8 years since he quit this job lol

This video made in modern RUclips would be 14 minutes long, would have a horrible clickbait thumbnail, and would have super unnecessary drone footage. Love this and miss the old RUclips.
One of the employees at my office quit this year, and he had another guy come in and belt out "My Way" by Frank Sinatra as he said his good byes and walked out. He crushed it - hit the high note and everything. No one was upset - it was magical.
anyone record it and upload it? would like to see it.
@@Captain_Obvious_Says haha yes actually. It's on some phones in the office, will see what I can do.

Everything about this is absolutely amazing, the enthusiasm, how his boss walks away, it's all so funny; if you've also ever been in a marching band you probably know how loud indoors they can get lmfao
Still great after 12 years
