Yeah, you've already got a pretty streamlined workflow, so even though I think the RCV would be a GREAT addition, it's a good idea to learn more and be sure.

I'll wait for more updates on this before I go sell my atem pro! blackmagic dropped the BALL by not listening!! and rode was/is smart enough to listen! and now they are forcing the competition to STEP UP. keeping it in their ecosystem is brilliant and knowing you can use ur other rode products plus a stream deck is great. Hey Tom, I just recently found your channel and have been loving going through your back catalog of content. Thanks so much for making it! This was another great one!
I am considering the Rodecaster video. Can you show how the auto switching works? Maybe with Heather in the room. Also, if using auto switching, could you hit an overlay manually and have it on while the auto switching is on? I am a one man production and do 1 on 1 interviews. Want to be able to drop the name a couple times per show. Thanks for all you do...great name btw.
I'm definitely planning on making a dedicated video for it with Heather as a co host, so hopefully that'll be soon! I did cover the basics very briefly in my RCV overview if you haven't seen that, but it's pretty nifty. Also, apparently it's a bit smarter than it seems and relies on some sort of algorithm to fine tune which sources to prioritize, rather than just simple signal/input/action. Pretty cool!
They’re craftsman rolling work benches from Lowe’s 👍 I think the Home Depot Husky ones are better quality but there weren’t any in stock when I got mine. I love the bright color though.
Loving this series on the RCV! I’m torn between an Atem Extreme and the RCV. Can you connect an iPad as a source via USBC (if all 4 HDMI inputs are being used)?

Tom, thanks for clarifying! I'm enjoying this series. Question: Streaming with Ecamm Live gives me a lot of these features. Does the overlay function have a limit? Is there as many images as buttons on the Rode console?
1:28 I really hope that in a future firmware update, that 4th camera/input could be your screen. So that you could stream the final result without Ecamm or OBS. And since I'm into feature requests, I’d like the possibility to add sounds to pads…
You can currently stream without the need for any additional software, either from ethernet or wifi 👍 You can also add your screen via HDMI but it'd be cool to be able to do it natively somehow through software just to free up an HDMI port!
Looking forward to picking one up, just need to decide how I want to handle a 3rd/4th mic. It’d be nice to keep it simple and still have matching mics I have shure mv7s but doesn’t sound like the usb would work, I’m open to upgrading or could just use a duo for the extras and utilize the xlr cables
The Stream Deck isn’t a capture card or audio interface. It’s basically just a usb keyboard (a cool keyboard, but just a keyboard). It has no internal processing/compositing/capturing.
Yes, this device is really interesting, but only if Rode makes the Software better. For example I can't understand, why I should only be able to have one overlay at the same time. This alone is a no go for me. But as always - I like your videos 🙂
Does the release of Rodecaster Video mean we probably are not going to see a successor to the Rode Streamer X (version 2)? Is it discontinued-Amazon only sells it used now.
Great video and mega informative thank you 🙏 Do you know if its possible to delay audio inputs at all?? When we have Rode Wireless Pro audio coming in from the onbaord receiver and we want it to match up with the video coming in from say an HDMI input - what if there is lag, can we get lip sync?
Are there any options for recording quality, like bit rates and codecs? I see that you uploaded in 1080p, have you tried upscaling your project to 4K in FCP? (not that it looks bad or anything, just asking)
I don't know the specifics, but the HD is definitely high quality! I haven't yet scaled it up in editing, but do plan on doing that in the future since I think it'll work really well. For now, I didn't want to give anyone the false impression that it was capable of 4K when they see a 4K video uploaded 😁
When you connect the Rodecaster Duo to the Rodecaster Video, do you lose any sound quality with the USBC connection in recording? I ask because I am debating getting the Rodecaster Video today. However i need 4 audio inputs. So I can do 2 XLR and 2 Podmic USB and use them on the Video....or I can do a Rodecaster Duo and connect that for the additional 2 mics to be XLR. At the end of the day, I want 4 audio inputs for Podcast recording. Thoughts or advice based on your experience?
Hi Tom, I still have not understood who the audience for the RCV beyond churches and similar is. How do you plan to integrate it into your workflow, by the way? And do the benefits for the RUclips content creator justify renouncing to 4k?
To be honest, I don't think it's intended for content creators as the main audience. For events and multicam productions (Yes definitely churches! But also schools, corporate conferences, etc) it's a pretty big game changer. For video podcasters it's also pretty huge and simplifies things a ton! Pretty much anyone who currently has an ATEM-based workflow will have a lot of cool new capabilities. For me personally, I like it for streaming anytime I need more than one camera, or for videos that don't necessarily need a ton of b roll. Sometimes I just need to explain something relatively simply from a few angles, and this lets me do it with minimal editing afterwards, so the time saving workflow is awesome! As for 4K, as much as I would definitely press the 4K button if this had one, I also understand why it doesn't and I don't think it's a huge deal. Those corporate/event/etc productions that it's aimed at don't usually request 4K and often times don't even have the capabilities to produce or deliver it anyway. And the more I've learned about how complex 4K makes things, if they kept all the features but boosted the resolution, this would easily cost 4-5x the current price, which probably doesn't make sense from a business point of view.
Talk about the recording capabilities, does it record only the audio ? or record the main show ? it also record every camera separately as atem iso do ?
Is there a way to recall, on the fly, which overlay or media is loaded on which button? I didn't see a thumbnail or any test saying what is where... Thanks!
Tom, I've yet to see an RCV tutorial on having remote video guests. Do we still need to have StreamYard or Riverside? Can you use your phone and FaceTime? What are our options? I haven't seen anyone come 'remote'ly close to covering this topic... Sorry...had to, but no one can pull off the puns like you. Who would have 'guest'? Ugh...brutal. Again, sorry.
So it’s a little strange- the SD card is for media and stuff but not recording. All recording needs to happen either way an attached SSD. Once it’s connected then the record button should light up.
I just got the RCV, and I see the feed in rode Central, but when I go to Zoom or Stream Yard, it picks up the device but not the video from my Sony ZV1 and troubleshoots ideas?
That seems strange. If the RCV is showing a signal from your ZV1, then Zoom or whatever app should see it too (since it's really only "seeing" the RCV and doesn't really know what's connected to it). One thing that might be worth double checking is the ZV1's HDMI output settings. Be sure it's set to 1080p for maximum compatibility.
@tombuck thank you so much. I really appreciate the response. Rode will be replacing the device. it seems like this one had a little issue after many tests. Thank you
Can you use the USB 4 & 5 to connect something other than a webcam or rodecaster pro? I’m trying to connect a smartboard as an additional camera while freeing up one of the HDMIs.
Currently I don't think so, but there are a lot of different devices out there, so who knows! And I'm definitely curious to see if any other options can be added with future firmware updates.
One draw back of arem mini pro is that it only has one usb c output and so you can't record to a hard drive and stream from it at the same time(without extra products). Are you able to do this with the Rodecaster?
Honestly, I'm not the best person to ask about ATEM overlays/etc since I've always found them so complicated 😬 It's one of the things I love about the Rodecaster!
@@tombuck Thanks for the reply, follow up question. Do you know anyway for a video file to not just loop but continuously play, so when switching back to a scene or that video file it doesn't just start over?

Watch the Dark Corner Studios video, he has a very good analysis, of why we will not see a 4k version. Look at the price of 4k alternatives, they cost $8k and above. Black Magic also hasn't been able to produce a device multi-4k device at a below $2k price point. And he argues that 4k is not 4k, so it is unclear what type of quality does the Yolobox produces. Plus, the market for 4k is so small. 4k is a niche segment. If you need what the RCV offers, better get it now. Else, you will have to wait many many years.
