Fun part about Elizabeth's IK: She's a "bonus boss" in Persona 3, and the toughest fight in the game. The "9999" you see is a reference of the damage she does with Megidolan (which is what her IK is) if you happen to violate certain restricitons in her fight (including bringing multiple characters, using certain passives or skills, or even TAKING TOO LONG to beat her). 9999 damage... in a game where you max HP is 999. That's right, she'll kill you 10 times over for doing something "not allowed".
She uses it every time after she summoned Nebiros, I think around 10 turns. She got two types of Megidolaon, Masakado Megidolaon and Pixie Megidolaon. The first one is the one she uses after every 10 turns while the latter is the delete button which she uses every time the player “break the rule” and when her health is below 10.000 (even started looping afterwards, basically not even letting you win). So yeah, basically you have to be invincible every 10 turns and accurately dealing enough damage to beat her when her health is nearing low so she won’t have a chance to use the delete button.

The thing about p4au's instakills is that what a lot lack in big impact or flashiness, they make up for in references to the games they're from, which is kind of a double edged sword
I think the reason the supers are primarily lore references is cuz the game was obviously made for fans of the rpg games, so without the lore some seem kinda lackluster
You can make supers look and feel great while also adding lore references. They are not mutually exclusive. The biggest thing all of these Insta Kills lacked where camera work and good sound design. Some awesome Supers/Insta Kills in otther games would look meh if it wasn't for the camera work and sound. Here the camera work is basically non existent and the sound is lacking really hard, barely selling the audience how impactful the attacks are.
@@taigaaisaka6305 I feel like part of that is it is all sprite work. So if you wanted to make elaborate IKs, it would be much more expensive than the ones shown here. I bet the budget wasn't exactly huge for P4A anyway
Aw man it's just the instant kills. I was kinda hoping for a rate the super on the normal supers cause a lot of them are really cool and show off the characters better. The instant kills mostly fall into the category of lore references that you need to play the game to understand. Like Yu's is a 10/10 if you know what it's referencing but on it's own it just looks like a big lightning attack.
And Ken and Koromaru's finisher use both Hama and Mudo, the light and dark instant kill spells from the series. That one is cool literally if you know the lore. XD
@@garcon45 I know the lore, and even knowing the lore it kinda just looked like a bunch of setup just for them to put you into a discoball with 0 impact.

His is creative and funny, everyone else's is just fill the screen with a bunch of random shit. Junpei, Yusuke, Chie, and both Labyrs have the best ones
It's also glitched.. If you land it and the time runs out on the round the enemy will just keep spinning for like 30 seconds until the game just cuts to black and continues.

The lack of interest surrounding Adachi's made me sad. Even if you've never played Persona, I swear, that is the most-hype insta-kill I have ever seen in a fighting game.
Most Persona characters: I'll beat you by using the power of friendship manifest into this robot frog pokemon that's going to punch you several times. Naoto: Just fucking shoots Adachi dead in the street
I like how Yukiko is a Fire and Healing magic user the whole throughout the entirety of P4 and in her general gameplay in Arena, but for her instant kill, she just busts out Senbonzakura Kageyoshi from Bleach.
You can tell how much Max cares for this game, when he droped it the second the Sponsored time was out, even when he didnt get to do all characters supers.
With how ArcSys's artstyles evolved, I really wanna see a third Persona Arena game. Too bad the lore isn't very newcomer friendly unless you played the mainline games :/
The second part of what you said is par for the course when it comes to Persona spin-offs. As for the first, though, I don't know. I trust that ArcSys can definitely make it work with the P5 cast, but considering the style of P5, I don't think they'd do as good as a different developer: maybe Capcom, SNK, or especially Bandai Namco (since they already have the experience of putting the P5 cast in a fighting game).
Max never has to justify he is a true penultimate Persona fan to anyone. He’s played P1 and P4AU, a feat most modern day Persona fans can’t claim and safely locks him into true MEGATEN arcane wizard territory for life.
Tbh, I'm starting to think Max might get a kick out of the non Persona SMT games if only cause of how much they steer away from the "highschool students having adventures" anime tropes that Persona fully embraces.
3:15 Ken and Koro are dope, but definitely not entry-level characters. Fighting really good players that main "puppet" characters in a lot of games are scary. Still have nightmares fighting Carl/Relius in Blazblue or Ice Climbers in Smash. The multitasking involved in controlling multiple characters is insane.
It's a shame that training mode makes the screen go dark really fast after the instant kills cause Izanagi-no-Okami being in Yu's win pose was always really cool to me and personally raises its score to a 6
Rise in general is unique as far as Persona goes. I mean when does a Navigator get time to actually go in and fight? Never, right? Anyway, while I like playing as Rise a lot, I'm not too big on her IK.

Really love watching these IK ever since P4 Arena came out. Really hope P5 Arena gets made someday. 7:54 Speaking of which, Minazuki's Persona design can definitely fit in as part of the Phantom Thieves with the black and red colors and the mafia suit kinda look.
For context on Ken and Koromaru teamup having two personas. Individually, they have their own persona. Ken's is "the McDonald looking toy" and Koromaru has Cerberus as his persona. Yes in Persona 3, a dog has a persona. Well in Persona 5, a cat has a persona as well. (Morgana screaming: "I AM NOT A CAT!!")
At long last, Max gives this game another shot, I remember back then when he played the original persona 4 arena for a tiny bit and dropped it for focus on to other fighting games at the time, I don't know why. But now with ultimax, there's a great world just waiting to be discovered!

When it comes to the whole lore implications debacle, I find it to be the same deal as Jump Force was. Lore is not an excuse for weak presentation. Even for non-flashy techniques, you can make it look cool while being faithful to the source. Hell dragon ball and naruto characters in that game have some of the most over the top, collateral damage attacks in that game but they lack impact and weight whereas for the Naruto side in their own games like Storm. The presentation is incredible even for the attacks that don't involve giant death balls, chakra kaijus and gundams.
This right here is what I'm thinking too, I feel like this does fit its era since it's an old game and I'm hoping for a new Persona Arena game with the level of presentation and style that ArcSys has nowadays with their current games
I think the problem with Max's ranking here is that, while an acceptable ranking scale, the fact is that these are for the most part characters with established lore from outside the game (with the exception of Labrys and Sho Minazuki, who are basically original characters), and so half of the Instant Kills are references to their story and powers (notably, Yu has his story-breaker spell from the finale of Persona 4, Elizabeth and Margaret reference their bonus boss fights, and Marie and Adachi reference their own boss fights in the story. Lore is a heavy part of the enjoyment here, so if you don't know the lore, you won't have that connection.
@@librathebeautifulwarmonk1283 Helel is just Lucifer before he Fell so they can be classified as the same demon. Satan is a different demon entirely though.

For the dog, holy light kills your soul, black fire burns your body In game, no matter your hp, if you get hit, instant death. That's why bosses have null light and null dark, cause they also get 1 shot So the dog super kills your body and soul
Arc Sys have definitely upped the production value on their super moves since this game. I like a lot of these supers, but a load of them are a lot weaker if you’ve never played the mainline games.
I feel like that's the inherent problem games like these run into when they're billed as canon sequels to their respective games This extends to the story as well. Especially the stuff they do with Sho won't make a lick of sense to people who haven't played Persona 4 or Persona 3 especially
Fun fact about Elizabeth s super. 999 is the max hp in persona 3(elizabeths game) so the damage being 9999 is so overkill its reserved for ONLY elizabeth... And elizabeth is considered as the single hardest secret boss in all of the persona games. And she only uses the move if you break the game(having immunity to all attacks)
Yukiko's is the best mechanically because it can punish people not paying attention due to her being invulnerable during the twirl, but the IK background and sound don't come out until right before she sends out the Persona. Which is unique among the IKs.
I will agree that in a vacuum, Junpei absolutely has the best IK, followed up by ShadLab because of the reference to mythology. But when you take into account the lore, Adachi has the best by a country mile.

Personally, I'd raise Ken on the fact that it is the two instant kill moves in Persona 3, 4 ,and 5 stacked together (and is actually the most damaging attack in this game if practice mode stats says anything), Yukiko's for having a clever reference that you would know if you knew Japanese (I had to look it up), and Chie for it being her iconic instant kill in the base game. As for lowering, Marie and Shadow Labrys.
Persona 4 Arena is the game that introduced me to Arc System Works. It's great to see this game re-released for a new generation. P.S., please make Persona 5 Arena a thing.
Let's be real. Life will change when or if P5 Arena comes (heh), but it's really clear this game is not for everyone when the low tier character (Junpei) has maybe not the best, but definitively the most understandable finisher above everyone else's.
And for some lore: -Yu has Myriad Truths (best move in the Persona series so far, and finisher of its game) -Yosuke has Brave Blade (one of the best Physical moves of the Persona series) -Chie's Galactic Punt is the strongest follow-up so far, Kanji's a literal brofist with himself -Kanji is a book reference of its game (thx @CountofBleck) -Marie has some P4 Golden exclusive lore with mixed-up opinions -Rise isn't really supposed to fight in first place (she's a mandatory support) -Elizabeth and Margaret have the most powerful spells and Personas as a Velvet Room secret boss tradition -Adachi is the reason why this game was meant more to Persona fans than newcomers because he's after P4 events -Naoto is what it is. Doesn't even have a special skill or anything (and, if you want to play the game, consider than some characters like Naoto also have instakills in their moveset because it's a Persona tradition) -Teddie is the joke character. -Yukiko's Full Bloom is based on her exclusive skill, Burning Petals, one of the best Fire Skills in the game -Ken and Koromaru both cast an instakill spell at the same time onto the same target (again, thx @CountofBleck) -I don't really know about Akihiko and Mitsuru, so I'm supposing it's related of who they are (a brawler and an ice queen) -Yukari combines both the Featherman aesthethics (a sentai within the Persona series) and her own "I won't miss" range gameplay -Junpei combines both his own basic offensive gameplay and the P3-onward school gimmick. Simple, not-so-hard to reference, and yet effective. -Sho and Labrys are new to this game, so nothing to say about them aside from reminding that this is a P4 title after all.

The thing about p4au's instakills is that what a lot lack in big impact or flashiness, they make up for in references to the games they're from, which is kind of a double edged sword
Not really. You'd only pick up this game if you played persona.
Agreed
He’s doing that lol.
@@Tasty_Tango45 Cool
And Ken and Koromaru's finisher use both Hama and Mudo, the light and dark instant kill spells from the series. That one is cool literally if you know the lore. XD
@@garcon45 I know the lore, and even knowing the lore it kinda just looked like a bunch of setup just for them to put you into a discoball with 0 impact.
I love that max gave my man junpei a 10/10
Hell yeah
Junpei is da man after all
See I really like a lot of these because they are sorta cuts from the series. Like Elizabeth doing what she does in her boss fight and Chie’s being her instant kill move from the actual game.
Litterally summons god = 6/10.
I kid of course, the fact that Junpei got the best of anything is earthshaking.
His is creative and funny, everyone else's is just fill the screen with a bunch of random shit. Junpei, Yusuke, Chie, and both Labyrs have the best ones
Its the one super where Max actually got the reference lol.
Rise’s “Rhythm game” super is my favorite one. It’s one of the funniest and most creative supers I’ve ever seen in a fighting game.
Dark stalkers did it first, probably where they got the idea. Either way I love a good rhythm game super.
@@hmad898 either that or it was a coincidence considering she has two supers referencing Dancing All Night.
max didnt play the rhythm game lol
It's also glitched..
If you land it and the time runs out on the round the enemy will just keep spinning for like 30 seconds until the game just cuts to black and continues.

For context, ken and koromaru are using spells from their game that have a chance of instant killing.
There elements are light and dark respectively… but I’m sure the persona 3&4 fans knew that already
Light and dark have a chance of instantly killing when striking a weakness don’t they? It’s the same in SMT.
@@Darkoriax17 In P3 and P4 Light and Dark spells don't deal damage, they're only used for instant kills, with weakness exploits granting you more turns
@@JulioCruz261 He didn't say that Light and Dark spells deal damage, he say that it work the same in SMT, which is true for smt 3-4. Light and Dark spells don't deal damage in those games similar to persona 2-3-4
@@Jfray252 No, he said that they have a chance of insta-killing when striking a weakness, which only happens in SMTIV and SMTV. In Persona they don't deal damage period and can insta kill any enemy that doesn't null/resist said element.
And Nocturne doesn't only have non-damaging insta-killing Light moves, there are also health percentage based attacks and normal damaging ones such as Violet Flash, Radiance and Starlight
@@JulioCruz261 This is true until Persona 5, where they added Kouha and Eiha. But yes, in the PS2 games (both SMT and Persona), Light and Dark are instant kills only.
I like it when Max gestures the number 4 and teddie says
Teddie: Heh heh
even funnier when Teddy's IK get a 9 from Max, so his "heh heh" is even more warranted
Keep in mind, this is the same guy who said that Sinanju was a 10/10 without watching Gundam when his buddies played Gundam Versus. ......over the Sazabi no less.
Understanding that Ken and Koromaru were doing dual instant kill moves is key to understanding why their super is so cool.
But it does look like a disco ball lmao
Yin Yang Obliterate!!
14:32 I love when Max gave Mitsuru’s a 4, you can hear Teddie’s “haha” in the back lmao
I love how Akihiko says the funny “i’ve been waiting for this”
The lack of interest surrounding Adachi's made me sad. Even if you've never played Persona, I swear, that is the most-hype insta-kill I have ever seen in a fighting game.
Damn right!
the tv cutting off as he stabs them is so awesome
Most Persona characters: I'll beat you by using the power of friendship manifest into this robot frog pokemon that's going to punch you several times.
Naoto: Just fucking shoots Adachi dead in the street
I like how Yukiko is a Fire and Healing magic user the whole throughout the entirety of P4 and in her general gameplay in Arena, but for her instant kill, she just busts out Senbonzakura Kageyoshi from Bleach.
It's senbonzakura, on fire
You can tell how much Max cares for this game, when he droped it the second the Sponsored time was out, even when he didnt get to do all characters supers.
Yeah, I do wish he played it more, it's really sick when you get good at it
With how ArcSys's artstyles evolved, I really wanna see a third Persona Arena game.
Yu's instakill looks so much better with the unique victory pose after, everyone's does shouldve watched them with it
Max never has to justify he is a true penultimate Persona fan to anyone.
Seeing Adachi teabagging as a gun is pointed at his face nearly had me on the floor. Thank you for reminding me that I'm a 12-year-old kid.
3:15 Ken and Koro are dope, but definitely not entry-level characters. Fighting really good players that main "puppet" characters in a lot of games are scary. Still have nightmares fighting Carl/Relius in Blazblue or Ice Climbers in Smash. The multitasking involved in controlling multiple characters is insane.
with the lore, adachi’s super is an instant 10/10
It's a shame that training mode makes the screen go dark really fast after the instant kills cause Izanagi-no-Okami being in Yu's win pose was always really cool to me and personally raises its score to a 6
I really liked the color customization when I started playing the game
and the fact they got a glasses option too is pretty neat
I would be surprised if they did not have glasses options seeing as how they are super important in p4.
Rise in general is unique as far as Persona goes. I mean when does a Navigator get time to actually go in and fight? Never, right?
Anyway, while I like playing as Rise a lot, I'm not too big on her IK.
Technically you have your starting Navis that get promoted to party members like Mitsuru and Teddie

For the dog, holy light kills your soul, black fire burns your body
In game, no matter your hp, if you get hit, instant death. That's why bosses have null light and null dark, cause they also get 1 shot
So the dog super kills your body and soul
Arc Sys have definitely upped the production value on their super moves since this game. I like a lot of these supers, but a load of them are a lot weaker if you’ve never played the mainline games.
I feel like that's the inherent problem games like these run into when they're billed as canon sequels to their respective games
This extends to the story as well. Especially the stuff they do with Sho won't make a lick of sense to people who haven't played Persona 4 or Persona 3 especially
I still own my original copy of Revelations: Persona. Underrated game at the time but what a great game. Played all of the sequels too.
Idk about revelations but i liked P1

It's very in character that it would be so over the top
Fun fact about Elizabeth s super.
999 is the max hp in persona 3(elizabeths game) so the damage being 9999 is so overkill its reserved for ONLY elizabeth... And elizabeth is considered as the single hardest secret boss in all of the persona games. And she only uses the move if you break the game(having immunity to all attacks)

Yukiko: 3/10
If it will be made by the current-day ArcSys, why even bother.
Sho Minazuki has a split personality due to having a plume of dusk implanted in him
Let's be real. Life will change when or if P5 Arena comes (heh), but it's really clear this game is not for everyone when the low tier character (Junpei) has maybe not the best, but definitively the most understandable finisher above everyone else's.
And for some lore:
-Yu has Myriad Truths (best move in the Persona series so far, and finisher of its game)
-Yosuke has Brave Blade (one of the best Physical moves of the Persona series)
-Chie's Galactic Punt is the strongest follow-up so far, Kanji's a literal brofist with himself
-Kanji is a book reference of its game (thx @CountofBleck)
-Marie has some P4 Golden exclusive lore with mixed-up opinions
-Rise isn't really supposed to fight in first place (she's a mandatory support)
-Elizabeth and Margaret have the most powerful spells and Personas as a Velvet Room secret boss tradition
-Adachi is the reason why this game was meant more to Persona fans than newcomers because he's after P4 events
-Naoto is what it is. Doesn't even have a special skill or anything (and, if you want to play the game, consider than some characters like Naoto also have instakills in their moveset because it's a Persona tradition)
-Teddie is the joke character.
-Yukiko's Full Bloom is based on her exclusive skill, Burning Petals, one of the best Fire Skills in the game
-Ken and Koromaru both cast an instakill spell at the same time onto the same target (again, thx @CountofBleck)
-I don't really know about Akihiko and Mitsuru, so I'm supposing it's related of who they are (a brawler and an ice queen)
-Yukari combines both the Featherman aesthethics (a sentai within the Persona series) and her own "I won't miss" range gameplay
-Junpei combines both his own basic offensive gameplay and the P3-onward school gimmick. Simple, not-so-hard to reference, and yet effective.
-Sho and Labrys are new to this game, so nothing to say about them aside from reminding that this is a P4 title after all.
