How to block a pipe that cannot be frozen | Aladdin Pipe Genie

  • In this video I test out the pipe genie, which is a prototype kit. This kit will hopefully be commercially available in the next few months. Sometimes a pipe freezing kit cannot be used and so the Pipe Genie has been developed for use on pipes that contain hot water, flowing water or water at high pressure. Eventually this kit will be developed for steel pipes up to 4 inches in diameter.
    Here are a few benefits of the system-
    The Pipe Genie is a professional tool comparable with an electric freezer kit but better because:
    It blocks the pipe more effectively (hot and high pressure pipe work), and controllably.
    It can block 'moving water' , the main reason freezing fails is the ice plug doesn't take as the water is moving - you only find this out when you cut the pipe.
    Blocks at much higher pressures - freezer equipment manufacturers state up to 8 bar (see Rothenberger website) but the Genie goes up to over 30 bar
    Blocks hot pipe work so no need to cool heating systems - a real advantage for hospitals and nursing homes with large heating systems and shared accommodation - hospitals for example can’t switch off their systems.
    You can block during a flood for example leaking fitting or pipe work, whereas you cannot freeze as water is moving.
    On hot days freeze doesn't take or natural convection currents in large systems cause moving water - a real problem we hear from plumbing maintenance companies.
    You can block the pipe as long as you want - you're not against the clock - you can even leave the job and come back and the pipe will remain blocked.
    You just need 30mm of pipe length on 15 mm and 40 mm on 22 - sometimes all the space you have on pipes - a freeze jacket is 3x this length .
    If you change system component and you need to rework it as pipework/valve is leaking you can re- block immediately as you can leave the bung fitted - and introduce flow slowly to test the system - and block if it starts leaking - this can't be done with freezing as is all or nothing as you let the ice plug melt it 'all goes' if the repair isn't sound

    Looks a good idea, I have used a similar system, on high pressure gas lines for corrosion coupons, much heavier duty, all components were rated to 15000 psi works well only difference was we have to equalise the dead side with a hydraulic pump to be able to get the valve open. Not so keen on that Aladdin mob though, I tried their auto bleeders for radiators, I found them to work intermittently at best, I took them back to screw-fix! Great vid, keep it up 😀

    • @niftylittlebleeder
      @niftylittlebleeder 6 лет назад

      I believe the system you may be referring to Jamie allows the insertion of a probe into very high pressure pipework but doesn't actually allow the blocking of the pipework for maintenance. The Pipe Genie comes with 2 bungs that allow simultaneous blocking of a pipe section eg to remove a pump at pressures up to 30 bar.
      We're sorry to hear you had unsatisfactory results with the autovents. These come with a 5 year guarantee. It may be you required technical support from our team as systems do vary. We do have an 0800 number for technical support further details are on our packaging.

    Good video as usual 👍 I have a pipe freezing kit that does domestic and commercial pipe work right up to big sizes, it will freeze copper, plastic, steel, lead so very versatile in that respect. This kit can be used on hot and flowing water which is good and maybe some big companies will buy them as for the smaller companies and sole traders I doubt they'll part with that kind of money, I've never come across a situation that I can't deal with as of yet.
    This is only my opinion and I'm not knocking the video or how well the kit works and hopefully I'll be proved wrong.

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks, a pipe freezing kit will be ample for most plumbers but I guess there are situations where this would be the only solution.

      Ultimate Handyman unfortunately I think they'll price themselves out of the market as it's basically an expensive saddle valve you're fitting to a pipe which are notorious leakers in the future.

    Good video, just read that they will be less than £10 for the 15mm, actually seems good value at that point. Had previously thought due to the £500 price that the 4 valves might be £50 each and seemed expensive then but for £7.50, big initial investment, but cheap to use.

    Interesting. There are other tools that can shut off hot or flowing water but they make a permanent dent in the pipe that must be removed. These also need a lot more clearance behind the pipe to wrap the tool around.
    This would look very professional so if you are working in a business or industrial location, everyone would be impressed.

    If you install the stopple fitting above the tee with a pressure gauge which has no reason for the pressure to drop or climb after you install the fitting between a dead end valve above it and the tee under it , when you opened the valve to bleed water or liquid off pressure should have remained I believe you stated 30 bar's on the gauge?

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  5 лет назад

      When you cut into the pipe the pressure will drop, as the water will expand into the cutter part (reducing the pressure).
      Then when the bung is screwed in, the water is compressed as there is nowhere for it to go (increasing the pressure again).
      Thanks for the comment

      The valve does not close the pipe, it only closed the opening where you fit the bung tool. The bung tools compresses into a sphere inside of the pipe and blocks it.

      Hi Dan, I thought exactly the same as you so I enquired about this and was given this information-
      This set also works on 22mm which the Easy fit isolator cannot do.
      The Easy fit isolator is about £45 but I believe the valves for this will be about £7.50 for 15mm and £11.50 for 22mm.
      They are also making taps that connect to the valves, for washing machines etc. The flow will not be reduced like it is in self cutting taps as the copper coupon is removed from the pipe.

      Thanks for the comment we're glad you like the Easyfit Isolator. We created the Pipe Genie as we had lots of feedback from plumbers who told us their electric freezer kits didn't work in many situations and they wanted an alternative that would work on hot pipework and at higher pressures.

    Message for Jimbo....... do you really think plastic pipe is more common than copper...????? I think this kit would be fine to use on plastic if it cuts through copper its gonna cut plastic i should imagine. But if you are working on a system which has plastic installed you are much more likely gonna be able to isolate the supply in various places.......... but i can honestly say that i have always managed in some way or form to isolate a particular part of pipe........ A clever piece of kit though...... would have had one in my van when i was working regular.

    As a gas engineer/plumber, this is reducing the bore of the pipe. A complete waste of time/money. Do the job properly and drain the water/freeze/even snatch it! Nothing beats a proper job, you might get wet snatching but at least you aren't restricting things downstream of this DIY valve...

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  6 лет назад

      It does not reduce the bore of the pipe at all.
      I don't think you understand what this device is intended for, I did put more information in the video description as it was difficult fitting everything into the video.

    • @kb5057
      @kb5057 6 лет назад

      ok hold on i may have misinterpretted this...this thing 'blocks' flow right? Then you could install another full bore valve afterwards for more future maintenance? Correct?

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  6 лет назад

      Yes, when the bung is screwed in it blocks the flow, then you can do virtually anything you like to the pipe on the other side of bung, then remove the bung afterwards.
      I believe they are also planning taps such as washing machine taps which can be screwed onto the valve, which would mean you could install one without reducing flow, as the copper coupon is removed (unlike self cutting taps).
      Thanks for the comment

      Ahhh, makes sense now, MY BAD! In that case it would be very very handy to have in the van but the cost is a lot but then so is a freeze kit which doesn't appear to be as versatile as this! Looks good, any idea how much the additional valve things are then?

    • @ultimatehandyman
      @ultimatehandyman  6 лет назад

      Yes, it's an expensive initial outlay but it can do things that a freezing kit cant.
      I believe this kit has been tested out by one of the regional water companies, as they can't always use a freezing kit.
      As for the price of the valves, I believe they will be about £7.50 for 15mm and £11.50 for 22mm
