  • Watch the TÁR press conference from the 60th New York Film Festival with director Todd Field, cast members Cate Blanchett, Nina Hoss, and Sophie Kauer, and composer Hildur Guonadóttir, moderated by NYFF Artistic Director Dennis Lim.
The charisma and emotional precision of Cate Blanchett are put to astounding use in this deft showcase for the actor’s musical artistry, a stinging portrait of a world-famous orchestra conductor’s gradual unraveling that is the first film in sixteen years from director Todd Field (In the Bedroom, Little Children).

There is so much talent represented onstage here, and in this film, that the long and drawn-out discussion by/about Hildur Guðnadóttir is perplexing. Surrounded by actual great composers heard in the film, not least Mahler and Elgar but several more, her spare sound designs in comparison get exaggerated as genius -- awfully similar to conceptual artists talking for hours about splashing paint.

I don't know... The movie looks visually fascinating and well acted so I'll watch it, and as an extreme introvert I neither judge or am I scared by people who are hard to swallow, in fact I see it as a challenge. But I'm also a writer and an editor and seeing Todd getting all that love and respect and doesn't even bother to smile in return really made me take a step back from him. I get it, truly, social interaction is much harder than people want to believe, but don't dismiss people's time and attention by ignoring their gesture towards you. And then he said that he didn't know if cinema would ever return during the pandemic so what would be the point of writing a new one and that truly sent me over the edge. I'm writing a movie and a series right now and yes, I have bigger dreams in life, but putting career aside, from a human perspective, how can an artist just give up on the purity of cinema? How can you stop believing in something so sacred and then expect to be recognized for your own creation? That's really hypocritical. I will defend all forms of art and especially cinema at all costs no matter how insignificant it may seem to other who don't know and don't want to know any better. Again, I will watch the movie, and if I find his work as a director interesting and moving I will respect him as such, but I honestly don't think I can respect him as a person after seeing and hearing him on this stage. I know it's harsh but this is what I felt and honesty is more important that sucking up to people. Especially in art.
