- Award-winning German actor Nina Hoss stars alongside Cate Blanchett in the new movie Tár, which looks at the life of a genius conductor thrown into scandal. Tom Power spoke with Hoss about learning violin for the film and what it was like playing with a real-life orchestra. Plus, she told us why she turned to Alma Mahler, the wife of the late 19th century romantic composer, Gustav Mahler, for inspiration - and why Mahler's 5th symphony is so important to the movie.

I finally get to watch a sort of proper interview with Nina about Tár. I mean, I love listening to Cate, but I was dying to know about Nina's insightful and thoughtful ideas too. Some previous interviewers low-key ignored Nina, not that it was Cate's fault.
I feel the Bradley Cooper interview did this (I mean ignored Nina)

Yes, I agree with you. Come to think of it, it's borderline unprofessional to do such thing. I mean, it is true that Cate has much more screen time than any other actress/actor in the film, but Nina is no minor role at all.
Thanks, the first interview without Blanchett and the first I watched.
Totally agree with you. Here we can see how she came to perform Sharon. I have watched a lot of interviews about Tár just to listen to Nina’s side of the story but everything was about you-know-who (and I love and respect her as well) but sometimes I just wanted to know more about Nina.
I love it that we get to know more about Nina in this interview! She’s such an underrated talent ❤
In Germany she is one of the best theatre actresses and very high accomplished
She's ever so adorable.
She's always so chirpy and charming, very insightful too.
She just oozes warmth. Can’t wait to watch the movie.
Hope you like it brilliant movie 🎥🎼🎬🎹🎻
This woman is absolutely gorgeous.
Finally a descent interview with Nina about her role in Tár.
this is my comfort nina hoss interview
Nina Hoss is for Germany what Isabelle Huppert is for France. Outstanding actress with a great catalogue of films! And she's right, Mahlers 5. is the best what classical music can give you!
Yes, I think Nina Hoss and Juliane Kohler are the most recognizable German actresses at least in Europe, these decades. The first ones that really come to mind.
She was a perfect support for character Lidia. So real so natural, very nuanced.
I've been admired her work and personality for a while (White Massai, Barbara...), but waching her in Tar, that brilliant assistance role in the film, but in Lydia's life as well, listening to her now in this excellent interview... I'm kind of falling for her...being mesmerized by her...she is a galaxy that still remains to be explored.
Tom Power is such a wonderful interviewer, he lets the guest do the talking,. He knows how to bring the best out of people by asking open ended questions in a honest and insightful way. He does his homework and it shows. He reminds me of Brian Linehan years ago on City TV. Gotta love CBC. Thanks Tom.
A superb interview! It would be hard to imagine a better one. Your questions were
just excellent and Nina responded with such sincerity, sensitivity, and a keen intelligence. Bravo.
Ms Hoss, one of the most incredibly talented actresses of this time. She’s powerful beyond words. On my wish casting list. 🎥🖋
Great interview with the always great Nina Hoss!! Congrats! ❤
It is a pleasure to watch a long interview with Nina Ross. Very talented actress and a nice person!
She is Nina Hoss not Ross
@@stephenfrankling8513 You're right! ...
Awesome conversation - hope more people discover it
I must admit that I didn't know Nina Hoss before this film. However after watching it, I have been captivated by every single one of her acting and creating of this work and this was a surprise give how little time she was on screen - an amazing script that has been portrayed brilliantly by the cast. I'm so glad to have found Nina the gem through this production.
She is our treasure
I first got to know Nina in the Showtime series "Homeland" with Claire Danes and Mandy Patinkin. Though her role over several seasons was minor, it was unforgettably substantial.
I am happy to find this interview even though it was done months ago. Lovely Nina.
She is so gentle, genuine and beautiful! She wins another fan from Brazil 🇧🇷❤
Having watched a lot of Nina's works (Barbara, Phoenix, A woman in Berlin, etc) previously, and now seeing her paired with Cate Blanchett in this masterpiece of a film, is a wish come true. If only there were more of them together!
She she looks so young and great
What ever film Nina is part of she gives her soul. I'm always amazed and in awe of her artistry.
I loved Nina in Homeland and can’t wait to see Tar.
Wonderful, thorough interview. Now that she's in a movie that gains so much international attention, I'm looking forward to seeing more future projects of hers.
The first time I saw Nina in anything was on Homeland. She was wonderful as expected. Glad to see her getting her flowers in Hollywood.
Lovely interview! Nina is so enchanting. And expresses herself so well even with tough questions.
I watched this three times before I noticed, they're not looking straight down the frontfacing camera lenses at each other as if on a Zoom call --- ---- they are being filmed by off-axis cameras so their much more attractive three-quarters profile is seen.
Her voice is very soothing.
I am also German as Nina and hope to see her at the Berlinale next week with Cate Blanchett
Great interview; agree with Ammyt--great to hear Nina's voice, and not just Cate B.
Thank you so much for this interview! Nina Hoss is brilliant!
My favourite film of hers that is only available on German DVD (no BD and no subtitles) is a film called SUMMER WINDOW
/ Fenster zum Sommer .
Excellent interview ! The interviewer was prepared and attentive to answers .
You're great, Nina!
Great interview. It’s interesting to get Nina’s insight of the movie.
great interview
She starred in a great Western GOLD.
fantastic! Domande interessanti e risposte sincere. Bravo!
Fantastic movie 🎥 Cate was brilliant 🎉
Wow, very interesting woman
That 5th Symphony is Heavy Metal for guys in suits.
Oh my god, please stop interrupting her that often! Especially this rude energy at 16:23. Appreciate this magnificient woman and what stories she chooses to tell you a little more!
I really liked the interview. However, like you pointed out, 16:23 was the worst time to intervene. I was dying to listen to what Nina was saying about Alma and Sharon. It was so important! *Sigh*
loved her in Tar
32:42 - a quality the film shares with Kubrick films
I'm falling for Nina hoss, I have a description written for how much communicates in her restraint to show she knows what Lydia is doing with the cellist through her eyebrow lifting and a tender facial expression , how can one reach her ? how can we write to her. HELP me with this.
Omg you also noticed it! That scene totally got me, you know? Her body language and facial expressions gave the whole script done. She didn’t need to utter a line to completely make her character express her feelings. She does it a long the film as well, when she waits Lydia at the entrance of the flat keeping her look still, also when sitting on the stool in the last conversation Sharon and Lydia had, or when Lydia announces the audition and Sharon closes her eyes as a sign that she knew what Lydia was up to, or in the car when Lydia was driving and Sharon asked to get out of the car, her last look at Lydia was just perfect. I understand what you’re talking about. I can’t avoid feeling emotional with somebody who has noticed Nina’s non-verbal acting phenomenal skills.

its fascinating...here, speaking to this person YOU-DO-NOT-SOUND-LIKE-A VALLEY GIRL !!! so...all the "likes".. and "I mean...sort ofs " etc are you relating to a specific generation. need I say that THIS rendition of you is a LOT easier to take.
I never realized just how Woke Tom Power is. Every topic has the same theme (or he will bring it up) is about either Race or Homosexuality. I'm surprised he isn't wearing a mask even when he is doing radio.
She is a great actor, but playing in an orchestra every night is boring as hell. Her experience comes from someone who is not a working musician in a symphony orchestra--all about uniformity.
Nina Hoss: my characcter was perfectly irrelevent and under developed. The movie would have been the same drag without it. In the sequel, I hope that is better resolved. And maybe I'll have better iterviewers then.
Great interview
Tom, the interview with Michiel Huisman was so so good.. You are so lucky. sorry for the off topic
Nina is soo magnetic every film she takes part in 🫶
