It might be because Michelle starred in a different movie! And obviously that film didn't elicit as much interest on this level as the film 'Tar' did. And my personal preference for the Oscar would have been Cate anyway. But that's the way it goes.

I watch EEAAO before the Oscar, then I watch Tar after the Oscar, and yeah I do agree Cate performance is better than Michelle Yeoh. But again Cate already has 2 Oscar under her belt.

The Oscars, unfortunately, has become a total political war zone. Property values have plummeted at the Academy. It's used to be such a nice neighborhood.
Just knowing how much Cate and Nina made the effort to understand music and an orchestra as well as the characters created by Todd, how Todd himself needed to learn about classical music and orchestras as the medium he chose to present the subjects of matter in the story he created, and how the actors and supporting team made into the movie we see in cinema offer the reasons why they deserve the professional awards.
I saw the film with my partner who is an orchestra musician and a conductor and she thought that the entire music/orchestra bit was unrealistic, except the plotline with the cellist audition and the solidarity of the orchestra with the principal cellist. Especially in one of the scenes when Blanchett closes her eyes while she is conducting.....
It was an amazing movie with layers and layers and profound
