Hyundai Kona Review--TRYING TO STAND OUT

- The Hyundai Kona is the latest entry into the fastest growing segment in the auto industry, the subcompact utility space. For 2018 Hyundai introduced this new 5-passenger SUV with two engine choices, two transmissions and two suspensions. The base model is the only one sold with front wheel drive and torsion beam rear suspension. The rest of the Hyundai Kona lineup is sold with AWD or all wheel drive and this also includes a multi link independent suspension. The base engine is a 2.0L 4-cylinder with 147hp. The top engine is a 1.6L turbocharged 4-cylinder with 175hp and 195lb.-ft of torque. This engine also gets a 7-speed duel clutch transmission. Starting at $21,000 for the base FWD car then $22,000 for AWD and $27,000 for the turbo. The top model is $32,000. The interior has heated seats, a 7-inch tablet style screen with a backup camera, plus Android Auto and Apple Car Play. The cabin can be equipped with leather seats and even a heated steering wheel. The letdown is the door panels and dash are covered in hard plastic but Hyundai has done a good job with colours and textures to mask the hard surfaces. The back seat is roomy enough for adults but the cargo area is rather tight.
Fact: most people with negative views or comment about the kona, didn't even test drive it yet. I did, and was pretty impressed. For the price, it is a good value.
Fact: Plenty of people buy cars based on brand and looks alone and many never even test drive it.
peter yeung you clearly don't have eyes. Hard to drive when you are blind
I think it looks nice. I've always wanted an Audi A3 hatchback, but they don't really make those anymore. This is pretty close, while being cheaper and is probably just as useful as a car in the end.
i took a lot round one in show room very nice :)
Rich s. Great choice. I bought a Getz over the mazda 2 as my impression was although not as roomy as the 2 had more features for less back in 2005. Since then I have talked everyone in my family into Hyundai Kias and all our cars are completely trouble free and fun. Stupidly I decided to buy a new mx-5 a couple if years ago and I swear I wish it was made by Hyundai as it is shit in quality, issues, comfort and has a worthless warranty. I hate mazda and will happily announce that I will Never give them business again. Easy I trust Hyundai/Kia so just need to choose which colour.
I shopped all of the cars in this class. #1. C-HR #2. C-X3 and #3. HRV were my top picks until I found the Hyundai Kona. A white Hyundai Kona Limited is the car I recently purchased and I'm loving the car!!! I must be one of the first on the road here in Dallas. More car, similar tech, solid build, tight ride, dual clutch 7 speed transmission (NO CVT thank goodness!), fast (especially switching from normal to sport mode, it's like getting 2 cars in one) and great styling all for less 💰💰 with a better warrantee. The only thing I see when driving are heads turning and traffic in my rearview mirror ✌😎!!!
FYI people this person is copy/pasting this comment across RUclips reviews. I love the Kona too and will probably end up getting it, just be aware the internet is not always the most genuine place.
Still love my Kona. No less genuine copy/pasting than taking the time to individually type for each video I've watched. No conspiracy here bud.
CHR is total crap.
My step sister traded her Hyundai Santa Fe Sport for the Huyndai Kona two weeks ago. She got the Kona in orange, 4WD and sunroof. She wanted a smaller vehicle with four wheel drive. My dad and I drove in it yesterday with my step sister. It is a lot easier to get in and out of it than the Santa fe Sport. Overall, my dad and I were really impressed withthe Kona.
Rudy Da Costa how much did it cost?! I mean the Kona!
Orange?
I have a Tucson for 8 yrs with 80,000 miles never been in show for anything major just oil changes and I do them now . I am really digging the Kona I will be testing one out .
My first time watching one of your videos and I'm subscribing! You have a great manner of presenting information. Also, awesome channel name
Thanks for that
Test drove it yesterday and picking it up tomorrow! Can't wait
This does a better all around job than the Toyota CHR. It's quieter, handles better, has a far better powertrain and the standard warranty coverage is longer too. Both have quirky love/hate styling but for me the driving experience matters more than that and that's where the Kona is the better vehicle.
What I don't like abt Hondas and Toyotas and possibly Mitsubishi is thay they all have CVT transmissions
I LOVE THIS CAR!!! It is the perfect Crossover compact SUV. I got my 2019 in January and I have NO regrets.
Really like some of those close to the pavement angles, looks nice!
Watched this video and was not surprised by the performance. I owned a 2014 Crosstrek and just bought a 2019 Kona Limited. Yes, the Crosstrek will handle more "off-road" than the Kona, but the Kona is more fun to drive and handles snow, slush and 99% of what most real AWD systems will see. The DCT does limit the off-road ability but that is the nature of that system, but it sure beats the rubber band slow CVT in a Crosstrek zipping around town. The test is valid, but
buy a car for how it will really be used if off-roading is part of your day to day get a real 4WD system and go for it. My old Wrangler and FJ Cruiser were great off-road but left much to be desired on road. Just my opinion having owned both.
Thanks for your posting. Was a little torn between Crosstrek and Kona but leaning way more towards Kona now.
Had my 2.0L SEL FWD with tech package in Pulse red for 3 weeks now. I LOVE IT! I looked at the CHR, HRV, and the crosstrek and CX-3. The KONA was by far the best of all of them.
Helpful post, thanks.
After leasing 2 Elantras, I may be ready for Kona. When I'm ready for my next lease, I'll check this out along with the 2019 Elantra in the fall. I guess the gas mileage is good, we don't use metrics in the U.S.
I went in to buy an Elantra and left with this. lol I always wanted an SUV. I had never heard of the Kona before. I drive it and loved it. My son is 6ft and fits fine in the back too.
I love driving this to my cottage on the weekends.
I drove my dad's 1.6 Turbo AWD kona, and it's pretty quick for its power. 6.7 sec from 0-60. Lol
i have a hard time believing that. all the reviews are saying 0-60 time is a little over 8 seconds. i drive a 2013 santa fe 2.0 T and the 0-60 time in reviews is 6.5sec. alot more horsepower at 265 as well as torque 295
TheKauaiboyz51 the kona is lighter and smaller than the Santa Fe so it is possible
Got mine couple weeks ago, 1.6T awd two tone, acid yellow, 0-60, 7.0sec, realistically. It is advertised as 0-60 in 6.7sec, more or less not.much diff. But I do love it and do not like the bigger size SUVs. It is my perfect automobile!
Love my Kona, I have it in the exact same color ☺️♥️
I have 2021 Luxury. Given short gearing, 2.0L feels strong for low rpm cruising. Quality of Luxury trim, is great value. Dampening is better then 2020 models. Sound system has good lows, but need to tune the base. compact spare is surprisingly light and lots of room under the floor for extras. Lexus can learn from Kona's leather trimmed heated steering wheel. Blind spot monitoring is weak. Stock Hankook's can handle mild winter. Spacious engine bay and chassis feels overengineered...'N' version on this platform will do well.

i officially got My Kona 1.6T Ultimate on order. i got it in the Comet Color. i can't wait to get my hands on it, going to be soo much fun :)
WesleyEngDOTcom did you really just like your own reply? Lmao, bro find some originality if you wanna trade snaps with the big dogs.
WesleyEngDOTcom at first I thought you were just a kid talking shit because your mom and dad don’t love you enough. Now after some digging I see you’re just an immature infantryman “serving” our country. I know you’re just mad because you get stuck on latrine duty and Jody is back here ramming your girl. Lmao
WesleyEngDOTcom nothing subjective about infantry service duties. Lol. You’re a very confused individual and I get it. I know you’re mad you got suckered by the army recruiters and after 4 years you’re still a pvt.
WesleyEngDOTcom should have bought a Golf Alltrack.
Don;t let these losers get you down. They probably don't even own a car.
The only problem with subcompact SUVs is the passenger backseat space. Test drove one and I’m 5’9 and it’s fairly tight, my knees were almost hitting the front backside. Trunk is also rather small but I understand that this is meant for ‘city’ driving. Out of all the options , the Kona is the standout. Crisp handling, 2 engine choices. Also go with the AWD because that gives you an independent rear suspension and makes a difference.
If this came in a 6sp manual I'd give it serious consideration, especially if it had AWD with the manual. I like the looks honestly
My 2020 Soul is 6 spd, and so is the Veloster which are like hatchback versions of this car
I really don't see the advantage of soft touch materials over hard plastic .
I hear you typically don't until you smash your head against it in an accident.
I don’t either. Plastic tends to last much much longer then any soft touch or cloth material that tends to bubble up in heat over the years.
Right. Nothing is free. You really want to pay extra for softer material?
@@dsgbrebel03 curtain air bag
@@dsgbrebel03 in an accident 0.1inch thick soft material don't help.
I love my 2019 ultim kona. It is fun to drive and fast. They had a brilliant engineer craft this car. You would be suprised what other cars this engineer has done.
Just bought the 2018 love my Kona! Drove in the rain for the first time on the highway and was really pleased with the way it handled.
@@jill885 it really is a great car!
The stronger engine is enough to steal many potential CHR and Crosstrek buyers..
CHR no AWD, so of course. And the only thing Crosstrek has going for them is available manual with AWD.
I'll be looking to replace my car with a crossover in a year. I was hoping crosstrek would offer an upgraded optional engine. If they don't, I'll seriously consider the kona. Even the backseat legroom looks better than most.
The more powerful engine is nice and it has a lot of extra "luxury" features, but it isn't a Crosstrek competitor. The ground clearance on this is 6.7" vs 8.7" on the Crosstrek and the Subie has X-Mode as well.
The Kona has a few comfort features like a heads up display, lumbar support, rain-sensing wipers, wireless charging, etc. But inexplicably, it doesn't have adaptive cruise control or steering responsive headlights like the Crosstrek. It also loses 1-2mpg cuz of the engine and will have worse resale. The vast majority of consumers also won't care that the Kona has a DCT compared to the CVT on the Crosstrek. Overall, it's a decent SUV but like Hyundai says, it's an "SUV for the city" and definitely not a Crosstrek competitor.
Ano nymous you're right, however my needs won't require the crosstreks clearance and proven all wheel drive. Let's see what happens in the next year, the crossover segment is always dynamic.
I would strongly suggest checking out the Crosstrek anyway. Even without the upgraded engine, Subaru's AWD is the best in the world. Hands down. Having a peppier turd doesn't mean it's a better choice. Go with what lasts longer and that you feel most comfortable in.
Great review. Crossovers are like the plague of the modern road to me. But I can't believe that I'm liking the Kona so much that I'd get one. I'm infected...😎
Got mine the other day. It's a Limited in Sonic Grey and has the 1.6 liter turbo.
How is it man
@@dopemuffinz1000 I love it. I mountain bike and I can fit my bike in the back with the seats down and my front wheel off. The 1.6T has plenty of power.
The seat height is a selling point for sure, especially for those of us over 50. Not too big, nice that you mentioned the lower trims, the level above base sounds like the one to go for. I don't like the light separation necessarily, I wonder how it lights up at night. I sat in one at the Toronto Auto Show, I didn't hate it. I can live with the look, I didn't mind the Honda Element so there. The top level trim price is insane though.
ronald i tried one in zamboanga city philippines your right i loved size and seating i have alterra and i like htis kona was nice :) next car
I love the size, ride, comfort and mileage of the AWD Kona Limited. Great little car.
I have to say that I am not so into the look of this car. Although, I am glad they have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Having the Turbo option is nice too but like he mentioned in the video, for $10k more there should be some nicer interior touches to make it look like it is worth the extra money. I am more of a fan of the Honda HR-V or Subaru Crosstrek. At least you know that they will maintain their value over the years and subsequently last longer than the Kona. I wish the Honda and Subie came with better technology but, all in due time. The extra technology and the turbo engine are all this Kona has going for it. Once Honda decides on putting in a Turbo, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Honda Sensing just like they did with almost EVERY OTHER VEHICLE in their lineup, they will blow the competition away. I guess we will see what happens in the future.
Auto Guy Bri its friggin hideous. For the price, its laughable
I get the green one ...comes with green seatbelts, my girlfriend says the car looks gay and weird, so I dump her )
LOLOLLL
Perfect! You can spend more time with your boyfriend now! 🤗
geoff jefferson Dumped who?? The girlfriend ?? Or Kona? :)
Lmao
Ha ha. I've been on my way to Kia web sites to look at Kona's, and then I have to remember that it's a Hyundai.
100% would have bought the Kona if it came with a manual transmission. Instead I got an HR-V which is a great choice and has a huge cargo capacity, but is underpowered compared to some in its class.
Don't worry. The HRV will get you there too...any day.......any day...........any.........day....someday.....On second thought, I would have bought the Kona...Just power shift...
Great video explanation. One thing missing tough, how good is the car after 100.000 miles on it? That’s the time that some companies products starts having issues. Thanks again.
I would think for even $22k there should be more soft touch materials , my 2016 Elantra GT / GL has soft touch on the dash , top of the doors and all armrests . Still not a bad little CUV .
Mr. Worf I’m guessing the average buyer they assume are the rugged lifestyle type of buyer
Power of Pine Sol Ha Ha ! Most will be used for commuting . Just like some full size pickups .
Mr. Worf oh I know this lol which is a waste to me but making it look and feel rugged I guess makes the seem more lifestyle and rugged. I’m guessing that’s also why they had the media launch in Hawaii
Power of Pine Sol Yeah , with a name like KONA , Hawaii is a good launch location LOL . Waste of time for me too , I like getting close to 40 MPG .
I don't mind hard plastic on the dash. I mean only time I touch it is when I need to dust it or clean it.
How is it in the snow?
The pricing was a steal for me. Compared to the CHR which is way overpriced from where i'm from and for the first 30 customers they would get around USD $3.5k rebate. CX3 basic specs doesn't even come with Android Auto or Apple Car play and is already over priced when compared to the Kona. Kona's basic spec already comes with those mentioned audio systems.
Sam Omar I
Just picked up a ‘20 Ultimate. Test drove a Limited and I’m not sure why, but it just overall felt like less of a vehicle than the ultimate. So far averaging around 37mph hwy. Other that way too much hard plastic in the interior, I’m digging it. Oh, and I came from a 2017 Elantra turbo sport. 👍🏼 One side note, a golf bag will not fit well in the hatch without dropping a rear seat, which sucks.
Zack, how do you feel about this front bumper design trend? Same on some Lexus. It sure looks pretty but what would it cost to replace that fancy cover packed with grills, fog lights and radar sensors when it will get cracked ?
Nicely disguised hatchback.
I thank you for mentioning the torsion-beam versus independent suspension. Haven't seen any other video mention this, but it looks like you did your homework. Now I know I won't get the base model.
Mazda dropped the independent rear suspension in the mazda 3, for twist beam. Interesting to see how that will affect sales among the mazda 3 fanboys.
People buy the “armor” not only
because it looks good but because you have no problem with rock chips and rust!! This is an amazing advantage of this plastics!
Exactly. Especially if you live in an area that has road salt and gravel sprayed on the roads 5 months of the year.
Hey Zack, enjoy the reviews. Can you spend some more time reviewing/testing the technologies i.e. lane assist, etc.
proud 2020 kona SEL owner here in pulse red
I am not quite sure, their is still a huge market for the Corolla, fact is no other car manufacture developed the sedan other then Toyota over the years... I mean Honda made a nice comeback with the new civic but unless they come out with a hybrid soon it will wither a way.
I have a feeling Toyota is going to bet on hydrogen electric then going full EV, first perfect the Hybrid then pop in a hydrogen engine when enough pumps are built.
Looks really good, but my question is, how in heck do you change a headlight bulbs with the headlights mounted so low on the face? Access through the wheel well?
Well said Pale. I was wondering the same thing. It looks like bumper removal may be necessary.
Thnaks for sharing... Did you tested and compared this CUV (Kona) to Nissan Kicks ?
nissan better for cargo but has no awd drive and crap info system but better sound system
Look forward to seeing the KonaEV. If the interiors carry over, it’s promising.
Just test drove the 2L AWD, it is actually not bad. Would definitely consider the EV if they bring it here in Canada.
I was talking to a salesman at Abbotsford Hyundai and he said they're expecting the smaller battery version of the Kona EV around September, and the large battery version next year. Not sure if that may be delayed a bit because of recent reports on Hyundai's battery shortages though.
The 2l has enough power for most people. We have it in our Tucson and have never had a complaint about it. In the eco mode it's really slow tho but that's obv what people in that mode are going for.
BTW, according to Google translate, Kia Kona would mean "its pillars", which would have been a winner name for a company trying to rebuild its reputation from a desastrous beginning (here in Canada) two decades ago with crap like the early Sportage and Rio.
It would have been cool if those daytime running LED lights were actually the headlights and the ones below the fog lights. I'm not a huge fan of the back though, with the flashers situated so low near the bumper. But I think it actually looks better than a Mazda CX3 overall. There is an all-electric version of the Kona coming soon with an estimated 400 KM range, or so I've been told by a Hyundai salesman.
Zack, Any info on the kona electric for Canada? Are you going to review it?
It's not bad.....but it makes me angry that Hyundai is makin a semi decent looking vehicle thanks to hiring an AUDI designer... Automakers need to step the fuck up with their car designs
200 lb.ft torque is not that much on a 1500kg car. $27000 is steep just to have this engine, the base engine is a much better deal for such a car. Here in Quebec, the cheapest AWD is rather $23000 which is quite impressive - if perhaps a little slow. But I wonder, do you have to get the AWD in order to have the rear independent suspension?
Yes, you have to get the AWD in order to have the rear independent suspension.
Cool, its the surf blue variant
It's a pretty interesting car. But the front look like the Cherokee not the new one the first generation. But I will go out and check this car out and see what it does
At under 23 Thousand.... with a 5 sp stick... I might have considered it. I figure the Hyundai/Kia group are giving up on Americans and the Germans,as their true competition. They are becoming locked at producing a ‘better’ LS with the G90 (though not there yet) and ‘better’ smaller S/CUV’s than Subaru, Honda and Toyota. Good luck to them. They’ve travelled a long way since the Pony and Stellar. Thanks for the video.
The trade offs features of every trim levels is absurd.
It has....torsion beams? Like from the 80s and prior?
Yeah, just like the new MAZDA 3
What type of AWD system does it use? How good is it?
Hey Zak please a review on Kia Niro as well. Thanks
Exact seats as my 2014 optima only with different pattern in the middle .. these are not the best when driving for long commutes
Think I may be getting one in the next year or so.
Very good review i really appreciate it!
I bought Hyundai Veloster coz just love that funcky look.
Now I am loving my fun driving Veloster 2012.
I am very impressed with high tech., different design, excellent service, and the best price.
Hmmmm..
My eyes on the Kona EV 64 kwh or Exo if those are coming to US.
How does it compare to the Nissan Kicks?
Nice review! BTW, why is channel name changed?
calvin kang because Canadian are not the only one who watch
Hi. Did you drive the version with FCA and AEB systems? Did you ever got any collision warning or autonomous braking? I have Hyundai Kona 1.0 T-GDI 120 CP 2WD Luxury+, which in Romania is the full version and so far after few months never got a collision warning even when the Garmin dashboard Cam 55 was reacting. The dealer claims the systems are working fine but never meet the conditions to react, which in my opinion is BS.
Great video! Thanks!
I love Hyundai and Kia🇰🇷
Get the loaded Elantra hatch instead. Same car as the Kona but a bit cheaper and better interior and more room.
A good option for sure, but no AWD.....I'm in Canada so the AWD is a must for winter commuting. Went with the Kona and love it
This or the Veloster? 🤔 I like both of em.
Sang Eeth go for the veloster even with the 2.0 liter engine
The veloster is a pocket rocket.
Nice review :) Greetings from Germany
Well done and interesting video
Spelling error in the description "duel clutch"
Expensive for what it is. If you're just driving gravel roads to the cottage, you'd be 100% fine in something cheaper like an Impreza hatch.
I would not consider the Impreza hatchback to be a "cheaper" alternative..
The impreza comes AWD standard and is in fact cheaper. Although the Crosstrek is more comparable, but is more expensive. If you do use it in snow on roads not readily plowed, the extra ground clearance is necessary. I have ripped parts off my Impreza before because of that.
31/32,000 cad from the top of line model, which 24k usd is not expensive where as low quality of the Subaru's lately interior bits and fatigue body panels execpt on the outback, i'd say that the kona a deal ps 26k for a top of the line impreza
Yes, but you wouldn't enjoy the ride as much as you would in the Kona.
Has a fair amount of appeal but too bad about the pretty cramped interior and low grade plastics. I would rather have a basic VW Gti over a top spec Kona. Better handling, ride, interior space, performance, interior quality.
Ulvaeus The interior shot too shows some questionable build quality as well, the gray door plastic doesn't align with the dashboard. I assume he didn't notice it.
Good video.
Have one love it
Like it but with all that plastic, the top trim is not worth the price. Wait a few years then catch a deal on it.
The front sits in the base model are not confortable. After 15 minutes of drive I changed my mind and chose for a more confortable véhicule in the same $$ range
Hyundai Kona: Grr
This or Vitara?
we ordered one 5 months ago , still waiting
They're selling like hotcakes...
Looks and seems alright.. But I'll stick with my Kia Stonic 1st edition as I prefer the exterior and interior
you don't get this one there.... i don't think
after my 2014 elantra where after only 65000 km's the engine had to be replaced for knocking noise I will never buy an Elantra again
did you get your oil changed? regularly?
I think this model is very good but navigation system is full ... .
Kona or Tucson?
kristen scott I would go Kona if you want more features. If you want more room go with Tucson.
Tucson gas mileage really bad
Design's s little busy. Interior should've been nicer.
What is wrong with carmakers ? ….. they don't offer the same colors in all trims … well , I guess the are not in the business of selling cars .
I take kona rather than any u.s or european cars
When you want a modern version of the Pontiac Aztek or Nissan Juke.
Reminds me of the Pontiac aztek
S Korterink the aztech was ugly
You are blind. Google the aztek again.
Exactly
S Korterink this is no wear neere the Pontiac aztech
Hyundai should’ve maybe run the name by Portuguese/Brazilian heritage people in the markets they’re selling it with this name. The name is slang for, uh, female genitalia in Portuguese. 😳
Michael Moniz it is called the Kauai in Portugal
CHR Looks better and better warranty
Why are they forcing us into buying cuv's I want a sedan and I dont know too many people that want a cuv so I dont know where all this hype is coming from and Im starting to think its fake news and numbers
Nobody is forcing you to do anything. Is there a gun to your head? Plenty of compact cars are available from multiple manufacturers if that's what you want. If you ever read stats you'd realize that SUV and CUV sales have skyrocketed in the past 5 years and for many companies going this route will yield good sales numbers. Your circle of friends isn't representative of the market as a whole. This isn't a conspiracy, this is the end result of market research and careful planning as companies can't afford screw things up. You do realize what goes into the entire phase of bringing out a new model don't you?
No need to put a gun to your head when they are limiting and slowly phasing them out its the same thing. No i dont please enlighten me
