This is a Motormouth couple car review of the all-new Hyundai Kona N high-performance subcompact crossover. With 276 horsepower and 289 lb-ft of torque, this sub-compact SUV is a powerhouse.
It’s got the same 2L 4-cylinder and 8-speed dual clutch transmission that’s in the Hyundai Veloster. Wonder what the red button does on the steering wheel? It engages the over-boost mode upping the power by 10 horsepower for 20 seconds at a time. There is only one trim offering for the Kona N, it starts at $42,554 CAD/$34,200 USD. The Hyundai Kona N has a sporty exterior design with black accents, a black grille, enlarged air intakes, red accents, a wing-type high gloss black rear spoiler, large exhaust pipes, N badging, LED headlights, LED taillights, red brake calipers and 19” Pirelli high performance summer tires. The suspension is firm especially in Sport mode, the steering sharp and once you get it on a twisty road, you can’t deny how well it handles. This crossover has electronic limited slip differential and an electronically controlled suspension plus traction modes which include, Snow, Deep Snow, Mud and Sand.Hyundai recommends premium fuel for the Kona N for better performance, but you can use regular. The Kona n interior in black leather with grey suede inserts, blue stitching and sport seats with a heated 8-way power driver’s seat with lumbar support is comfortable. Other standard features include a heated steering wheel with paddle shifters, wireless charger, head-up display, 8-speaker Harman Kardon sound system,10.25” touchscreen, wired Apple Carplay and Android Auto and a 10.25” digital driver display. Here are some features the Kona N doesn’t have, a sunroof, a power passenger seat, passenger height adjustment, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and a temporary spare tire, instead you get a tire repair kit. Competitors to the Hyundai Kona N are the VW GTI, VW Golf R, Subaru WRX, Hyundai Elantra N, Mazda CX-30 turbo, Mini Countryman JCW and BMW X2.

I just bought a Kona N and I love it! You should mention that the green button also shift down and revs it up and makes it much more lively, super fun! I love the dual clutch transmission, it doesn’t need a manual transmission. I also love the front wheel drive, I don’t need an all-wheel-drive to have fun with this car. If you buy this car, you will have the time of your life and many adrenaline rushes.😊

My daily. Love this car. I have owned almost every hot hatch from GTI’s, amg gla 45, mazdaspeed3, mini jcw and the Kona is the funnest of the bunch. All wheel drive adds weight, price and complexity to the build and honestly would take away torque steer and driver feel. It’s a purpose built car for raw driving and it accomplishes that. Rather than keep focusing on what it’s not in this video focus on what it accomplishes. For me it’s. 35k usd fantastic purpose built hot hatch that rips with the best sounding exhaust at the price point. Car and driver just did 0-60mph in 4.8 in the Kona N which is fantastic.

I had a Kona 1.6t AWD that I miss dearly. I’ve been low key planning to buy a Kona N since they announced it. I’m torn between the Kona N and the overall goodness of the Elantra N. I hope to get my hands on one or the other real soon. The both look like a total blast. I loved my Kona. So glad Hyundai made this move!! With the LSD and a good set of tires, it’ll get by just fine in the snow!

i own this one and had the awd turbo kona before it. get 30-34 mpg if stay off turbo. putting donut spare in trunk to replace bubblegum kit helps handling. replacing summer only tires with all season tires is a must.
Didn't miss the moonroof or the awd , must rather have the torque and hp increases. this is way more fun to drive....🤗👍🥳🔥💥💯

Agreed I replaced the summer tires with Continental Extreme Contacts after the 1st month of having the car and it made a really nice improvement in handling and ride. And they last way longer than those stupid pirelli summer tires the car came with.

AWD is not an omission. FWD is true to current mission. Maximum power, minimum weight for class. I would own one. Decent tires in winter will do more than AWD and all seasons. Hey! A test that needs to be done to confirm or deny my hypothesis p.

Happy Canada Day! I think that this is one sharp cute and snappy little CUV. It looks great. And most importantly, I believe it will sell for Hyundai. Well done them. The only disappointment (aside from sunroof and AWD (imagine RWD!)) is that absolutely ridiculous “Fast & Furious” power shift button. I get it … if you are twelve! But seriously?!? Its not like it has some ‘nitro kit’ or something. I suppose it is to make up for the fewer and fewer number of people who can drive a proper manual (I would have thought the double clutch transmission was enough). I do think it looks sharp though. This ‘N’ badging seems to be working for them. Thanks for the video.

Thanks again for letting us know the range of the vehicle on a fill-up of fuel... manufacturers are making the ice model cars' gas tanks smaller and smaller to decrease the weight, thus, increasing fuel economy slightly by doing so (i.e. smaller gas tank, less fuel in the tank, thus, less weight overall at the expense of range even though fuel economy is only slightly better)... nice sleight-of-hand because no one asks about tank size or range when buying an ice vehicle.

  • @ctclardy
    @ctclardy 2 года назад +4

There should be a choice between front and all-wheel drive... they are trying to keep the costs down for the demographic they are trying to appeal to... cute and fun car though.

Great video, guys. Agree with all the pros and cons both of you pointed out about the Kona N. However, I think the Kona N price and the 10yr warranty outweighs the cons, overall. AWD feature would be nice but that would raise the price. IMHO, the moon roof or sun roof would be a much better feature for Hyundai to offer. The alternative options are good comparisons but all 3 (other than the Elantra N) cost $4k - $8k more compared to the Kona N.

If I didn't live in the heart of the prairies, no AWD wouldn't be as important. I'd love to test drive an N, but then may need to look at trading in my N-line. 😆

  • @Andrew-zs5tc

Great review. The big things to consider for me are the rougher ride and fuel mileage which make it less than ideal as a daily driver. If I were considering it as a weekend fun car, I would ignore the mileage and rougher ride but would struggle to consider the SUV shape as an appropriate weekend car.
The extra weight of a panoramic sun roof would take away from the driving dynamics in a car that is taller than the competition.

I agree with the notion of atleast having a AWD option. But when you you think of it: isn't the Kona basically a high stance hatchback? I say that as a compliment, since it's a clever body design that customers want. I would guess that it would sell well with the Niro's electrified drive trains(Please test one of the new Niro models). Great video and enjoy your long weekend.

I have owned my '14 Fiesta ST from new & love it - except for not being able to "easily" drift it on gravel or wet pavement (snow is easier) After all these years the torque steer still annoys me as well. I'm in Wpg & don't necessarily "need" AWD for winter use (studded ice tires help a bunch)
So this Kona N is not going to cut it.

I really wanted this car to be a home-run since I have the 2021 Kona Luxury, which is more endearing with use. Did a one-day round trip to Montreal/Toronto and nice place to be in. Also, was the most capable car on the road with a foot of snow-fall in one afternoon (Toronto).. I was considering replacing my GenX Civic for a Kona N, (which would make me 2 Kona family), but can't get pass the bad consumption and suspension system with bad progression... Elantra N is getting great reviews, but it does not impress enough to upgrade from my current Civic (mainly because Hyundai's real world consumption doesn't compare to Honda), so it's off the list. My next move is getting new springs for my 2017 Civic, to make it more track focused and wait on Type-R.

Those mileage amounts they brought up do not coincide with my real life driving. On the highway I average around 7.2 l/100km at around 115 km and on smaller highways where I go around 100km I'm getting around 6.9l / 100km. My city driving is way better mileage than what they showed , generally around high 9's, and I drive spirited at times.

The Kona N starts with almost $43,000 Canadian. If they added AWD and moonroof, the price would end up going well over $45,000. They probably didn't want this car to price itself out of the market.

It's already overpriced. This should have been about $35k and maybe $37k for AWD. I'd much rather go with GTI or WRX for $10k less than this.

Both of those vehicles are no way near performance minded as the Kona N. The WRX is dead in the water, and you will have to spend the same or more money to buy the Golf GTI Clubsport/ or R to match/exceed the Kona N, because standard Golf GTI is warm at best.

Coulda been a nice compact performance utility vehicle with awd. Hyundai ruined it with Fwd, waste of power! You can't even put down that power on 2 wheels, and torque steering is inevitable! Tucson with awd and 2.5 lt. 300hp from gv70 could have been a nice performance Suv.
