I love Vektor! One of the special things about Vektor is that they tune their guitars up a half step to F. So F Bb Eb Ab C F for the guitars and F Bb Eb Ab for the bass. The beats per minute for "Recharging the Void" is 200*.
*The intro is 208, then it's 200 for most of the riffs and 198 and 196 for some riffs and 93, 98, 99 and 114 for the different clean parts. The ending riffs are 201 bpm. So Presto+ most of the time.

Oh damn you listened to it! Yeah, the vocalist in Vektor is definitely influenced by Chuck Schuldiner of Death (another favorite band of mine). This guys style is like a blackened scream/shriek. And he did the singing in this song as well. They hired some backing R&B singers to do the Great Gig in the Sky style stuff. Glad you gave it a chance. The screaming fits this album really well as it tells the story of an immortal tyrannical dictator from his perspective. Dude came off sounding like a Xenomorph.

I know they're influenced by Voivod...

    • @vicsdungeon
      @vicsdungeon 5 лет назад +3

@Designated Shitposter Voivod is just one of their influences and it is way overstated because of their logo. This song (or the album for that matteR) sounds nothing like Voivod. They have so much more in their sound than Voivod. Check out Absu (Tara), Aspid, Death (of course), Emperor (later era) are by David's admission some of their major influences.

    • @tarkus1056
      @tarkus1056 5 лет назад +3

@@vicsdungeon Yeah man, theres a LOT of Emperor (specially Anthems and Prometheus, even some of Ihsahn's early solo stuff), Immortal (specially their mid/late 90s stuff) and Destruction influence, even Rush. Voivod is, like you said, overstated because of their logo. Maybe in Black Future, but in Terminal Redux their influence has been obviously watered down. This is their most Black Metal album yet.

The Death song you were talking about is Flesh and the Power It Holds, it's also one of my favorite Death songs. Chuck Schuldiner, the leader and vocalist/guitarist was indeed raised in Florida and was such an awesome guy. I never met him but just from his music and live performances, he leaves a legacy honestly. He was the only consistent member of Death, and the music ranges from growling vocals and death metal to screams and progressive, and even some technical metal. Every album is a work of art. You can tell the vocalist of Vektor was influenced by Chuck because his vocals have a very similar style. It makes me sad that Chuck isn't here anymore. Death was done before he died, but we still lost a great person and fantastic musician. I believe he was diagnosed with brain cancer, but the actual cause of death was pneumonia because his immune system was so weak from the cancer. Chuck makes me want to be a better person.
I'm sorry to hear about your son, Jared. I love that he was so influenced by Pantera and Death, two of my favorite bands as well. You should definitely do some Death. The vocals may take some getting used to, but I think they are easier to digest than Vektor's. I love screams and shrieks, but even this song was intense for me. About screams vs growls, growls are the lower sounding vocals yes. This song was all screams, at least what it sounded like. The main way to tell is the pitch, with growls resonating in a lower place, and screams from a higher place. Another way might be seeing if it's lower or higher than speaking voice (I just thought of that, no guarantee it's true). Vocals like these tend to seem fairly normal to me when performed, compared to growling. Everyone does their own differently, but it gets a lot easier over time. I have a bias for extreme vocalists :P I think of vocals as another instrument, so much that lyrics are always secondary
P.S. I love your reactions and the enthusiasm. They make songs I've heard many times, fun again. Channels like yours make me proud to be a metalhead

I will say that this band is almost always at mach 10. It was this album (Terminal Redux from 2016) where they introduced singing. And they only did it for 2 songs. "Recharging the Void" and "Collapse". It caught everyone off guard when they branched out like this.

Over a year since you reviewed this but... I think it's worth looking at the lyrics for the full Terminal Redux album. The story/lyrics are pretty epic.
Track 1 - Charging the Void
The governmental body (Cygnus) of a planetary system (Epsilon) sends a lone astronaut on an "Isolation mission", and from the lyrics we can judge that it's essentially a one way trip towards the star system Alshain, which refers to the binary star system Beta Aquilae. Somewhere along the way, or when he arrives at one of the stars, he discovers some material (enocules) that gives him eternal life. He spends 13 years within Alshain, and during that time, he begins to realize his ambition to take revenge on Cygnus and attain absolute power.
    Track 2 - Cygnus Terminal
He comes back to Cygnus bringing enocules (and I think he expected a hero's welcome), but all he receives are persecution and threats to his life, as Cygnus presents itself as balance and rejects his eternal life. He presents his immortality as an ultimatum from which neither of them benefit, so Cygnus eventually releases him. However, Cygnus' repeated attempts to take away his freedom, individuality and glory only serve to affirm his desire for power and for revenge on Cygnus, and he begins forming a plan to take over the star system.
Track 3 - LCD (Liquid Crystal Disease)
He ends up on the planet of Epsilon with a population of 14 billion. In spite of Cygnus' claims that the population cannot be controlled, the astronaut presents the "liquid crystal disease" as an alternative. He embeds the LCD, a technogenic virus, into every person on Epsilon, providing them with both entertainment and dependence. It serves as both a means of surveillance and a means of absolute control. Under Cygnus' nose, he starts implanting an idea in the minds of the people that Cygnus limits their freedom, and they can only be truly happy with absolute freedom that he will provide them. Meanwhile, he formulates a plan for what's basically planetary genocide as a way to weed out dissent.
Track 4/5 - Mountains Above the Sun (instrumental)/Ultimate Artificer
After the successes of the LCD, he begins building a fleet under Cygnus' nose, weaving a web of deception to conceal its true purpose, as he already has full control over their atmospheric power grids. His new fleet of "Reapers" is ready to "cleanse" the population of Epsilon. He wants to essentially defy or succeed the order of the "obelisk of the stars" by overthrowing Cygnus. For him, there's no need for the weight of the past to hold him back from his goal.
    Track 6 - Pteropticon
The final phase of the LCD operation has been completed, and he's established control over every living being on Epsilon. He's found everyone who might pose a threat to his rise to power, and he sends out his Reapers to decimate the Pteropticon. (Given the context, I assume this is Cygnus' space force) He annihilates Cygnus, and eventually wipes out half of Epsilon's population.
    Track 7 - Psychotropia
He's become connected to everyone through the LCD, and he begins losing his sense of individuality. His will is their will; his utopia is also their utopia. He offers them sanctuary, a place to rebuild using "sand", and they're free to mold it however they like. He has endless hope for his new regime because they now have literally endless time and absolute unity to go forth with its construction.
Track 8 - Pillars of Sand
Using his Reapers, the LCD, and dependence on the enocules, he continues expanding his empire, to the extent that opposition is nonexistent. The lyrics even compare the opposition to "pillars of sand". His rebuilding and will are like a drug, propelling him to go further. However, he soon begins to realize his folly, as he frantically builds up his regime and realizes there there is nowhere left to go and nothing left to do. He begins to lose his will to go further as he questions his actions, and whether endless time is truly what he wants. His own regime is a pillar of sand that can go no further. What comes up must go down.
    Track 9 - Collapse
Just as time brings down a pillar of sand and cracks broken glass, his state of mind begins to fray. He belatedly realizes the weight of his actions, the amount of suffering he's caused and the hypocrisy that arises from the truth of his empire. In his mad dash for knowledge, power, and control, he comes to see that he himself has become what he originally detested. Eventually, he comes to the conclusion that "To live, we must die. We die to live."
Track 10 - Recharge the Void
He's lived far beyond when he should have died; his will is at his wit's end. He acknowledges that he's brought not balance but imbalance. He brings his "Terminal": the immortal populace, the Reapers, and the enocules, and casts them all and himself into Alshain, bringing an end to their eternal lives and tyranny and restoring the balance that Cygnus originally preached.

I'd like to recommend Haken's Aquarium. I believe it was their debut album and it's also a concept album that tells the story of a mermaid who is found by a fisherman who sells her to a circus, whose blood ends up being the only thing that can save mankind from a flood that was perpetuated by Global Warming. Aquarium is the second song on the album. If you guys enjoy that, I'd give the entire thing a listen. Especially if you're fans of Dream Theater and love classical influences!
    Much love.

The vocals on Terminal Redux are almost (almost!) typical black metal vocals. He had an extra something on the previous two albums, can't really describe it, you're gonna have to listen to them to get it. Black Future and Echoless Chamber are good examples (and fantastic songs. extreme thrash all the way through...)
As for a bio for Vektor, this review might help actually, it was for their second album, which was album of the month at the time in Metal Hammer (Greece):
    vics-dungeon.blogspot.com/2016/01/vektor-outer-isolation-heavy-artillery.html
Interview with David DiSanto (vocalist, guitarist, composer, basically the band):
"Vocals (LOVE THEM!): Did they come out naturally? When you started singing what did you go for? Who are some of the sickest vocalists in your opinion?
Haha, thank you very much. My vocals do come out naturally, although I’ve noticed they continue to be refined over time. When I first started attempting vocals, I tried to layer my voice with a high shriek and a snarling growl in unison. I got inspiration from Schmier of Destruction, Mille of Kreator, Ihsahn of Emperor, and King Diamond. Those guys are my all time favourites."

Cool song, but growling on helium?

not a growl, a black metal scream. Early Vektor albums he did higher screams occasionally that are reminiscent of early Slayer. But with this album, I think they wanted a more typical blackened thrash sound (vocally).

Thanks...and we are like that. Won't change who we are. It's the authentic reaction. We are super in love, fortunately-mated and grooving with the music together. It doesn't get any better than that for us. We appreciate your honesty. Later!

Listen to The Contortionist - Primal Directive, Flourish, Oscillator or Contact. I think you'd appreciate the heaviness and pure melodic musicianship. Really any underrated band on YT.
