@@colloquially ELOs frontman is Jeff Lynne, Brummie legend who pretty much revived Harrison and Orbison's careers in the 80s. In all seriousness I think he's actually an example of an underrated musician, especially considering the producer side of his career

Appropriately enough I’d say Silversun Pickups are pretty darn underrated. Well, under-known I guess is the more apt title since they’re generally pretty well liked by indie music snobs, but still. Was literally just listening to Panic Switch. Great song from a great album.

Sinead O'Connor is super underrated as a songwriter. Black Boys on Mopeds is one of the greatest protest songs ever written and sadly still highly relevant today.
I feel like when the term 'underrated' is used, most of the time people mean 'underappreciated'. Something can be very highly rated by those who know it, but not popular and that would make it underappreciated.
For me it’s Polvo. Especially the Celebrate the New Dark Age EP, the way they moved to a more chaotic sound while still having those really pretty moments in their music amazes me, and it’s one of my favorite releases of all time, wish they were more popular

don't know about celebrate the new dark age, like tragic carpet ride is a masterpiece and stuff, but cor-crane secret is so versatile and irregular, this album got so few of mentions I'm so upset with this
The Las are super underrated especially with how their sound influenced so many of the great bands that came out of Manchester in the early 90s
Stone Temple Pilots. I think they get labeled as a Pearl Jam knockoff because of Core. But Purple is a great album and a much different sound from other early/mid-90s grunge. Overall #2 grunge band after Nirvana in my opinion
For me it's gotta be Low, they paved such a path in the slowcore scene but also just indie rock in general, and I still don't see enough love for them. RIP Mimi

Hey, Badthony Takestano. You ever heard of The Volkswagen Beatles? They were a small rock band from the early to late 60’s. They had John Lemon, Paul McDonald, George Harrypotterson, and Dingo Carr. Some of the most overlooked songs ever made, like Tomorrow, There Goes the Moon, and Blueberry Grass Never. Check them out, Kanyethony Light6tano.

My picks for five underrated bands are Lamp, Casiopea, The Brave Little Abacus, T-Square, and Slowdive.
Slowdive are about as perfectly rated as a band can be. TBLA would've been underrated maybe like 7 years ago but there's tons of shitty fifth-wave emo bands that are basically ripping them off so their influence is finally taking off.
Cool you put Abacus here. My brother got me into them a few months ago and I typically don't enjoy emo/math rock but I think they're much more than that and that's why I like them.
For me it's Soulwax. Holy shit i can't get enough of their stuff. Some of my favorite originals from them include "E Talking", "Is It Always Binary?" and "We Love Animals". When it comes to their albums, well, the albums the two first tracks i mentioned are from their two best ones in my opinion ("E Talking" is from "Any Minute Now" and "Is It Always Binary?" is from "From Deewee" (the third track i mentioned was their feature on a Crookers track alongside MixHell, which belongs to Crookers' album "Tons Of Friends", which i also suggest you check out (especially track 19, that shit had me rolling))). And also some of their remixes like "Gravity's Rainbow" by Klaxons, "Best In The Class" by Late Of The Pier, "Synrise" by Goose and "Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)" by Arcade Fire are so awesome (their remixography is very *very* large, so make sure to check out more than just these ones). This comment does not do them justice so i advise you to watch the "Part Of The Weekend Never Dies" documentary on them and their other projects.
I also wanna mention a side project by two of the members of Soulwax called "2ManyDjs". They have no original music, but their audio visual mixes over on the "Radio Soulwax" website are still awesome nonetheless.
And also an (in my opinion) underrated duo in electronic music i like is Felguk. They have changed their sound over the years, but neither their early or current work is made any worse by that fact. My favorites from their earlier days are "2Nite", "Buzz Me" and "Side By Side", while some of their newer stuff i wanna point out includes "Open Up", "When We Lose It", "Work That Body", "Nova" and "Dance To The Beat" (i mean, newer when it comes to their sound, some of these "newer" tracks came out years ago).
Yes! Love soulwax, Nite Versions and From Deewee are incredible
For my personal taste, the most underrated artists that I think deserve way more love are Deep Turtle, Bleach 03, and Brainiac. I feel like not a lot of people even know of them, but I find them extremely fun to listen to.

Most underrated artist is easily Louis Armstrong. People would be surprised how much Western Americana music from the 20th century onwards is standing on his shoulders. Not only do the general public not revere him enough but even jazz musicians rarely bring his name up to the same frequency as Bird, Miles, Monk and Coltrane.

It still chafes me to know that the majority of pop listeners only know one song by him. And, of course, it's What a Wonderful World, one of maybe a half-dozen songs that are only ever referenced ironically. Shocker. Doesn't help that compilations are pretty much the only way to get a good view of his career, and it's hard to know which ones are the best.
In my humble opinion, City & Colour (Dallas Green) is a fine band that’s been around for almost two decades but still aren’t as popular as their contemporaries. They’ve consistently pumped out solid music since their formation in 2004. With that being said, maybe they’re not underrated as much as they are overlooked(?) for lack of a better term. Going to see them at Budweiser Stage in August, can’t wait!
Sinead O’Connor is such a good singer and doesn’t get as much flowers as she should

I think Sleater-Kinney is pretty underrated from what I've seen. The amount of raw passion and aggression they put into their music as well as Corin and Carrie's dynamic as guitarists and vocalists make them one of the best indie rock bands I've listened to, yet I rarely ever see them be brought up or discussed at all. The Woods is such a noisy, explosive, and passionate record and it's fantastic.

You want an underrated band proportional to their success? I saw these guys in a local bar a few months ago, Voodoo Sometimes, only 1k listens on spotify, but you could still argue you're not a fan too. I get that you're upset right, but i feel like that's such a non argument. How underrated/good a band is is an inherently subjective opinion.

I think that's unfair - Each of those are artists that may have 2 or 3 songs known the the general public and that's a pretty underrated band if you think they should have had a more public career.

I love Sigur Rós so much but I wouldn’t say they’re underrated. Everyone who knows about them is obsessed with them. They’re just obscure because of their other-worldly musical style and non-English vocals.
Mansun is a British band who I think were underrated. Doesn't help that the music press decided that they were Britpop and therefore "so last year" when Attack of the Grey Lantern came out.

Woods Of Ypres are my number 1 underrated band, they should be talked about more and “Woods 5: Grey Skies And Electric Light” is an absolute masterpiece, beautifully emotional.

You wanna talk underrated? Alien Ant Farm. They became a one hit wonder because of their cover of smooth criminal, but were honestly a very solid rock band for the time that in my opinion did not get enough recognition. So much so, that the newer stuff they released had cringey lyrics basically saying "fuck everyone" and then their sound kinda got ruined from there.
But hey that bass player is fantastic
Maybe not accessible to most people but I always thought Saccharine Trust was criminally overlooked and should have at least as much of a cult following as some of the more heralded underground bands of that era like X, Gun Club or even their other label mates on SST. Confounding.

If there's one thing I've learned from Reddit it's that far too many people confuse popularity with critical acclaim. These are not mutually exclusive. Underrated means you think something should be more critically acclaimed than it is, not that it should be more popular.
To me overrated or underrated has more to do with how liked someone or something is. Key word “rated”. Most say it’s based on popularity, but to me its the former.
i don’t think it’s too complicated. it’s just a short-form way of saying “I think the band is better/worse than the general consensus”. whereas I think calling a band “overexposed/underexposed” is more about popularity. so.. I think I agree with you lol

If we're defining underrated as the biggest gap between popularity/appreciation and greatness, then I'm gonna have to go with The Mountain Goats. Darnielle is the greatest songwriter of all time and most people know 2 or 3 albums, if that.
Mineral wrote "The Power failing" which is a top 50 Album of all time for sure and yet only a couple of young millenials who rediscovered them 20 years later know them
