SAILBOAT LIVING - THE REALITY OF SAILING LIFE Ep 75

- What is it like living on a boat? What about the day to day tasks and chores like shopping, boat maintenance, filling with water and diesel.
With Liz now back on board we prepare SV Esper for our journey south through the Malacca Strait and attempt to fix the VHF, install a new Racor fuel filter, do some shopping and tell you all about doing the laundry on a boat. Sadly, it is not all blue water sailing, this is real liveaboard living, it is the day to day reality of living on a boat.
What is living on a boat like? Tell us your stories, comments and opinions in the comments section below, we love to hear from you.

I was feeling sorry for myself here in Mexico, unable to find a veggie stock anywhere, feeling jelly of you all there in the abundant, amusing supermarkets of Malaysia, but then you can't find the veggie stock either...so I guess it things aren't so bad.
[Liz] You made us both laugh out loud and nearly spill our morning coffees! We feel your pain! If we ever make it to Mexico (which we really hope to do) we will bring lots of veggie stock cubes and find you. Peace and fair winds!
Make your own and freeze it in ice cube trays. Of course you need to have a good working freezer and the space for it, but it will be better without all that msg.
SOMEBODY's happy to be home..!!! Ya' could probably have titled this episode as "Whew!"
..I can smell the relief,.. and it's NOT the broadbean farts...
Makani ʻoluʻolu! :) Aloha ʻolua!
[Liz] Haha!
Glad you're back Liz. He seemed sorta grumpy in your absence. Thanks to both of you for sharing your great adventure.
I'm always grumpy, Robert.
I do not want to bust your chops but you skipped the Asian section. Fish sauces Hoisin sauces. Asian mustards, their wide variety of hot pepper sauces, etc. One more thing, nice riding boots, flip flops. The rest is excellent. Thumbs up.
Hi Bubba. The point of the shopping section was to talk about home comfort food, not local food.
Glad to see you back Liz 😎 Jamie was up to no good with all the ketchup and farty beans 🤣 happy sailing guys and many thanks for sharing 🇭🇰
[Liz] Hehehe... it's great to be here! But nothing I do will stop those farty beans! 😜
hello Guys, Loved your video (again)... Stay healthy and enjoying what you are doing, All the best.
[Liz] Knowing that people like what we are doing is such a great tonic and makes it all worthwhile. Cheers!
Episode 75 - the undies edition. LOL We have a hand washing machine on Emuna II, though we are based in a marina and able to do wash the standard way at the local laundrohut.
[Liz] 😄😄😄 Love that title!
From warm sunny England back to the cold cloudy Malaysia.
It's positively freezing here ;)
I noticed a e cig the other day. What's your thoughts on Thailand announcing an up to 10 sentence for using one whilst in their country.
Absolutely ridiculous, Barnie. Some heavy 'lobbying' from the cigarette companies going on there.
I was about to tell you how to fix the radio and she gave it to you. The problem was the cord not the button.
Hey Rob, there was a much longer version of this scene where I talk through the PTT button and conclude it's the cord but the camera angle and me dicking around for 10 minutes was boring to watch so I edited it right down.
at 20 quid for a tray of beer, id definitely need some toilet paper :-)
[Liz] 😀😜😄
Thanks for this very amusing video that was underwear heavy, 'the great unmentionables'.😀I found the supermarket scenes funny even though I am not a supermarket sort of chap - the bonus is I now know what they look Iike inside 😉. Once you replaced the VHF handset- did you fix the dodgy one to keep as a spare? It was great to see you both together in the real world after your month sort of together in the 'virtual world'. Thanks.👍
have you ever had some dirty diesel cause a problem Jamie?
Ha! Watch next week's episode, Manuck. It happened to us the night before last. First time in 11 years.
We use that Turkish towels in hamam (Turkish bath).when you go to a hamam they give you these (3 for one person) then you take off all your clothes in your room, even your underpants.you use one of them to cover your Adam places )))) and the second one is used to dry your body after bath.third is again for Adam places when you go out to your room.
Guys , great video again . get the deawoo mini washer , its fantastic ! find a nice lil spot for it , wash 3kg in 20 minutes and it will even run off an inverter (cold water only) so you don't have to use a generator
Hi Liz. Good to see you back. You may want to have a look at the "panda portable washing machine" It has a built in spinner and apparently is good on the electrics. I've seen other sailors with the unit and sells for a a couple hundred dollars.
+Steven Gagnon [Liz] Thanks for the tip! I'll look into this. I like the idea very much... Interested to find out about power and if it comes as a 12v version...
I think you need to run it off a generator -- although, who knows -- there could be a 12volt model out there?
Liz, great to see you back in Malaysia.
[Liz] It's sure good to be here! 😀
Welcome back Liz :) Love the vid as usual!! As well the music was totally so awesome!! Thank you safe travels & Fair Winds m'friends!
[Liz] Cheers! Yes, Jamie chose some great music for this one! 👌
Now I'm curious if there is other types of ketchup besides tomato ketchup. Is there like a potato ketchup?
A silly question, when you launder on the boat, do you use fresh or salt water, or a combination?
[Liz] Not at all silly. Having a watermaker means we use fresh water, but we know of people who use seawater to wash, then fresh water to rinse as a way of saving water...
@@followtheboat How do you get your clothes dirty....do you actually wear them
Glad you are home. Sorry about your mother. Great info about cleaning.
Merci, thanks for sharing with us. Learning much!
Another good video but my curiosity is piqued by the boat behind you!
Welcome back Liz. Yeah, there is something about home that gives you that feeling when you get back there, wherever it may be. Airport security must go crazy going through your luggage. Not everyday you have a diesel filter in ladies underwear. ;-)
Cable troubleshooting 101: Start to flex cable starting at one end while the PTT is working. When it starts to cut out you are at the spot of the broken wire or you can carry a spare and fix the broken cable at your leisure.
Laundry roundie-things have a tendency to "attack" unsuspecting sailors, at least that's what happens when the Admiral hangs up the knickers & bras. Like the blue polka dot number of yours.
Great music and beer. Do they serve it western style (cold) down there? Fair winds, eh.
[Liz] Every time I go through customs I hold my breath. It was OK this time, but last time I had the whole new windlass dismantled and spread across two cases, along with numerous other bits of boat and camera equipment. No clothes, just bits. I was asked to open up both bags in Langkawi, but was lucky that the customs official knew about boats and just waved me through. Phew. This time, not only did I have the Racor fuel filter, but I also had a tiny pot of Mum's ashes and just hoped they wouldn't ask me about it! No idea what they would have thought of that...
Yes, very cold beer here, often presented in ice-cold glasses. Lovely!
I hope you love that motor as I do they are great to feel the reliability and piece of mind
Welcome back Liz!
[Liz] Thanks! 👌😀
Welcome back Liz, hopefully you will take charge of navigating the shopping!
[Liz] Haha! No pink jobs/blue jobs on this boat...but I get your drift! 👌😉 It's wonderful to be back!
welcome back Liz! Wow at the beer prices in the store and the ketcup. Always love your segments
Beer is super expensive outside of Langkawi, sadly.
You guys are the nicest and funniest sailing couple of youtube. Thanks for sharing your life! Greetings from Istanbul, Turkey.
Teşekkür ederim, Hakan.
Great to see you back on Esper Liz, looking forward to your continuing journey, I hope you are going to get back to doing some fishing soon!
[Liz] So do I! But it's so difficult around here with all the nets and traps in the water, I've got fed up with losing lures. I'm told that around the corner, in the Gulf of Thailand, there are fewer ways to snag your line...we shall see! It's good to be back. 😀
Ever been to a hamam?
[Liz] Yes, I love hamans! Jamie...not so much. 😬
Y,all find the most beautiful places in the world .Thank u for letting us see through your EYES
[Liz] We love showing you what we see, it's an incredible planet! Thanks for taking the time to comment. Peace and fair winds!
Welcome back Liz!! Jamie was about to fall apart without you lol. By the way... nice work pants Jamie
One of my fave pairs. Thoroughly recommend them.
welcome back
[Liz] It's good to be here!
Great seeing you back Liz! James is really a bore without you......
James?
Sailing followtheboat Jamie.......regardless, he was a bore!
+Cigarmann [Liz] Bit rude. 😯
Sailing followtheboat only meant in jest dear. I religiously follow your Vlogs and find both of you immensely entertaining and full of information!
+Cigarmann [Liz] 👌😁⛵️
thank you so much,
Terry
do you have a HF radio, or is there no real need for one?
Welcome back Liz !! :)
Welcome back!
Knickers vs underpants! Great match! Who won?
It's a constant battle. I suspect Liz's are cleaner, but we won't go there, Erkut.
The shopping trip made me laugh so much 😂😂😂 a must watch
+Simon Pownall 👍🤣👌
“For larger items like sheets or towels or .... most of Jamie’s clothes” haha got me laughing there!
Missed you Liz. Welcome back!
[Liz] Missed you too! 😊 It's so good to be back at home, and on the vlog!
add about 50% when giving british pound prices and you'll know how much it is in canadian or american dollars
[Liz] Less than that these days. Right now GBP1.00 is $1.29!
and the GBP is now $1.62 CDN! that's the one I am concerned with....as I am canadian
You need to get a multimeter and add that to your tool kit. With it you can check electrical continuity, (wire broken or not), voltages, etc. All sorts of uses when you learn to use one. Then you can check your microphone wires and push to talk switch, etc. Really a needed item for do-it-yourselfers.
Not only that but I even say to camera that I need to check the continuity with the multimeter! It just never made the final cut because the original version was too long. Anyone living on a boat without a multimeter has to be questioned!
+ML L [Liz] And I know how to use it too... 😉
Good! This stuff is important when you need to depend on anything involving electricity. Most people don't know even the basics.
Welcome home!!!!!
[Liz] It's good to be here! 😀
Welcome back Liz
[Liz] Thanks! 👌
This shows how much of a team you two are missed ya xxx.
Cheers, Geoff. I'm not complete without my Liz.
