You are among a very rare group of RUclips sailing channels that doesn’t try to dress things up but is frank about what you are experiencing. Thank you. Because of that, we’ll be following you, though sad to see Esper sail away to look after her new friends. As an aside, I fully endorse your comments about ketches; I have one and really appreciate the variable sail plan, particularly in a blow. Very best wishes to you both.

My wife's uncle had a 32 ft fibreglass ketch which he lived on every summer in Cogolin in the Med and who we visited a few times during which I learned a bit about sailing making a trip across to Corsica.
Eventually he stopped going out but allowed us to go over and use the boat for a couple of weeks provided we did all the work getting her ready having been put back in the water after the winter. This involved re-treating all the woodwork and completely re-fitting the sails plus a good clean up. Finally once ready I took her out and sailed up the gulf eventually anchoring under sail in a local bay and amazingly ending up roughly where I intended.
I haven't been sailing since and still can't quite believe I was able to do this and am very grateful to have had the opportunity.
Maybe in the future I will have another chance...

many many many years ago i stumbled upon podcasts and your podcasts was one of the first that i found. Then you led me to youtube videos. It was such a pleasure to see your faces for the first time after being voice-only for all that time. Soon after i found Delos, and shortly after that was the youtube sailing explosion. What a fun ride that has been. When you say your refit was 10 years ago i think to myself, "is that possible?"

My vague plan for after living aboard is a gypsy wagon and a Lanzbulldog tractor. Faster then a boat and more space then a camper. No special drivers license either. But a narrow boat would do nicely too. We, who are not restricted by bricks and mortar, have so much choice, it can be quite overwhelming sometimes. I totally understand the "we figure that out when it is time" attitude. Happy selling!

    • @followtheboat
      @followtheboat  3 месяца назад +1

You make a very good point about not being constrained by bricks and mortar. Also, we are used to limited space, so size isn't so much of an issue either. The sky is our ceiling!

Congrats on the brave decision. It’s going to be tough parting with your home of 20 years. I can’t see you being happy on a canal boat for very long, (see Nutshell). Obviously this is about being nearer to family as we all age, so Im guessing a slightly larger oldish oyster for Jamie to potter away on moored in Southhampton. There are plenty of adventures from there and when after 5 years the cold makes your joints ache you can escape south for a time where renovations are much cheaper, just avoid Orca Alley and go wide.
We’ll see how the dice rolls. If you are doing some sail instruction you could help me bring my Southerly down through the Channel next April. Im in Aus till then.

Best wishes on your next adventure, and I'm sure there will be excellent opportunities on the water nearer home over the next few years. Not surprised. Honestly, the video had more questions than answers. I had to guess, I would say as the crew ages, the boat is getting a bit more difficult to handle. It is not an easy lifestyle, blue water cruising. Also, the boat is probably getting close to another refit. So time for a change. If I was them, I would buy a European canal/coastal cruiser like a Linssen and putter about Europe and the Med. Home is close, plenty to see, etc. I am probably way off but it is fun to speculate. Cheers guys, fair winds and thanks for what you do!

@@followtheboatThere are plenty of us that manage by doing the Schengen shuffle, and you get to see places in quite a lot of detail that you might otherwise not pick. Albania is really interesting for example. You are definitely restricted though. I reckon a narrowboat. I lived on one for a couple of years. And from memory 60' is the longest for some of the canals. Widebeams are more spacious self evidently but your cruising area is significantly smaller, but I am sure you know all that already 😏

Congratulations! Time for a new chapter.
We think you should buy a catamaran, build a catamaran, complain about catamaran life, get some children, get some nannies, get some videographers, start a mankini line, drink some AG1, get some betterhelp, send the kids off to uni/school and become empty nesters, go up on the hard and do a total refit (again), do some RUclips cross channel collabs, get surfshark, and get more people to smash the follow and like buttons.
Oh, and when you've done all that, maybe get a canal boat and work your way through the English or French canals?

Hi, a little shocked, but I did anticipate it, last year you were seeking advise, I could tell you getting bit jaded, I suggested you put Esper on the hard for a year, preferably reoccupy the London property. Ie to give yourself a break. That's what I did anyway, have tried slow travel, couple of ship cruises, large and small. It's working, have the energy to get back to it now, but not sure yet should I prepare it to sell or sail on, it would surely be a tragedy to end up with a worse vessel if I upgraded.
If you had taken the advise, you would be probably be sick of land life and ready to give Esper another go.

During the pandemic a sister ship sold for a little under $25000 in Tahiti... it had been sitting on the docks for a few years and covered but the sun really does take a toll on boats in the tropics. $60000 may be closer to reality considering the location and age... good luck. I have been enjoying watching for years.

wow what a big surprise ! I am sure you will communicate more in the future about the reasons, except its purely personal. In my case, after sailiing for a few years and crossing an ocean, I see that it is getting quite lonely on a sailboat. The term "lonely bay" is becoming more of a nightmare than a dream destination, I really miss being among real people. Together with the fact the maintaining a sailboat is a huge task, I will sell my boat and move to a more stable shore based life again...I am wondering if you will be staying to live on the water......Good luck for both of you !
