7:00 I'd recommend putting a sealant on the MDF first before painting.
I needed to replace the baseboard in my bathrooms because the moisture ruined the MDF. However, I really like the profile of them.. So I tested a scrap piece by sealing it with a flex seal spraycan I had laying around and threw it in a tub of water for 24 hours. It was perfectly fine after that test.
Flexseal does add some texture to it but I'd imagine there's far better alternatives compared to what I had laying around.

I too purchased the Graco paint sprayer from Home Depot. My project was a fence but I've since used it for a shop cabinet and it's not half bad. It takes a little experimentation with the speed control but the result was much better than a brush or roller. There is a learning curve as you need to follow ALL of the instructions, and clean up is still a chore... but I like it.

I 100% agree with buying used when starting out with exclusion to consumables like saw blades. My first miter saw was a Bosch 12" glide that I bought off Facebook Marketplace. If it still has the stock blade on it, throw it out immediately. A cheap Diablo blade is better than the stock blade. I sold the saw to another starting woodworker about a year after for the price I bought the saw at, when I jumped to a Kapex. Same for my first planer, it was a DeWalt 735.

I made MDF doors for a bathroom cabinet. I painted the with BIN shellac to act as a seal coat and then painted over top. After a year, the moisture still caused swelling. I remade the doors using exterior, or moisture resistant, MDF and now after 2 years there is no sign of moisture related swelling.

I noticed that the MDF you're using in the first example has different colors (main body Vs. rails and stiles). Could it be that the thicker panel is HDF (high density fiberboard, sometimes also called hardboard)? Similar to MDF but much more dense?

Is Moisture Resistant MDF (MRMDF) a thing in the states? It's a denser product that cuts and machines better than the standard woolly stuff. Better for bathrooms as the name suggests.

  • @rkalle66

Wood movement in respect to humidity. Along the fibre less than 1%, perpendicular but radial (from bark to center of tree, through growth rings) ~3% to 5%, tangential (around the tree along growth rings) 6% to 10%. No movement at all on MDF (medium density fibreboard) or plywood.
Pay attention to grain orientation of the center panel.

Are there more doors or drawers in the world?
First, define a hinge: A round or cylindrical mechanical device that pivots on a central point.
Second, define a door: The thing you just made here.
Now some clarification: A door front and a drawer front follow the same assembly method and have the same outward appearance. A wheel follows the same principal as a hinge, it just never stops pivoting. Now use math to cancel out your common denominators (drawer front & door front -> door & drawer), and you arrive at the conclusion that a drawer is just a door on an infinity hinge.
There are more doors in the world, and drawers are just a conspiracy to oppress the common man. :D

    My few thoughts…
First, jigs. You missed the opportunity to sell the jigs as beginner projects. Before I not someone could use a jigsaw. You could build a cross cut and ripping jig for a jigsaw. Circular saw you could have encouraged beginners to build their own ‘track saw’ guide. Two easy beginner projects that make this task easier.
On the subject of saws, people were making cupboard doors before power tools were common. Just saying it is possible. I love my hand tools, but I’m using my table saw and miter saw all day to make doors! 😉 I could use my hand tools though.
Jigsaw and sanding blocks even simpler than a circular saw. With a fine blade, you can get some clean cuts.
Your building visits are great. Thanks for not caving to the tool review algorithm.

One pro tip that you used "This is a test/Still a test" but didn't call out. LABEL your test piece. Surely...I won't mistake a test piece with the real piece....but you will sooner or later. (and stop calling me Shirley). Everyone will have a moment of panic where you tear apart a glue up because you used the wrong piece, flipped it around etc. I don't know why human brain sucks at stuff like this, but I don't think I'm the outlier.

Did you make this video years ago and are just now posting it because poplar is NOT cheap! Just 2 years ago I bought a 7ft 1x12 poplar board for the local home center because it had an awesome grain pattern. I have yet to use it. It cost me about $40. That SAME size board today just under $100 ...if you can find it in stock. Their website only lists a 2 board pack for $160. There is NOTHING cheap about that.
