    Three years ago I used photographs that I had made of a slabbed tree in sketch up to figure exactly where I should cut a center joint to put two bookmatched halves. The rendered version was sent to the client for approval. Sketch up was a great help in determining where to cut each slab so that the center joint was spectacular. With bowties of course.

    I liked your video showing how to make a piece of wood to look real in thickness and shape. It made me think of how can I get a model of a car and make it look like it had a minor accident? I design bodyshops and would like to show cars in the model, but not just showing cars without perfect faces. Usually what I find are vehicles with major destruction.
    I have Ben using SU for a couple of months and this has stumped me. In my head I think I figured it out, but in practice it doesn’t come out correct.

    I know this is an older video, but what mouse or keys are you using to make your movements so fluid? Especially zooming and moving the image around.

    hey thanks for the trick. here comes a newbe question . im curious about how do you navigate around your piece . The camera movement appears to be disconnected from the mouse cursor.

    what kind of mouse do you use...? I noticed your orbiting around is very smooth

      Pretty sure Aaron uses a 3D connexion SpaceMouse. I have one and orbiting and zooming is really smooth.

    Interesting and useful. Just one thing. Live edge, by definition, means working with the raw edge of the tree. In your initial selection, you cut away all of the live edge. So this wouldn't be very useful for designing a piece of furniture using an specific piece of wood with a live edge.

    It would have been so nice if the original team had done freehand right. OR if they had included a spline function. Bezier's are great but not so much for natural sweeps. To have a function that allows picking a start point, give a vector, add more points to a terminus with another vector makes design so much more fluid (pun intended).

      If you’re able to install extensions, try Bezier Spline by Fredo6 on Sketchucation.
      This lets you draw several different styles of curve including one where the curve is generated along the points you click. This sounds like what you’d like to achieve. You can edit them after drawing as well until you explode them or push/pull etc.
      I use it all the time for ‘freehand’ curves.

      Thanks, I will revisit that extension. This lack of insight by the original design team is exemplified by "push/pull" rather than extrude and by have "G" as the hotkey for Component!
