As for checking amperage of the connections, as talked about around 5:00, there's a much easier way.
Many don't have a clamp amp meter, but do have a standard multimeter, that can measure amperage. These have the 2 probes, black and red.
Just set the meter to AC Amps, and put the probes, one each pushing onto the 2 screws, lower left. Those are directly connected to the 2 wires going to the furnace.
Of course, before doing this, turn the thermostat right down to "cold" temperatures.
This just assures that the mercury doesn't fall to the left, which would "short out" those 2 wires and thereby, not giving an amp reading.
NOTE that when doing this, you will hear the furnace kick in. This is normal.
All you need is to get the amperage.

I turn my thermostat off but my heat is still kicking on? How do I fix that? The top of the dial is off but the bottom dial says 80

It sounds like the mercury switch is broke. In time the coiled spring weakens that senses temperature change. If you look behind the dial you should be able to see the glass that holds the mercury you can use a small piece of wood like a pencil & move that glass up or down (I forget) & see if the furnace shuts off. Be careful so you don't get zapped. If it shuts off then you have a bad switch & need to replace the thermostat.

The long silver part on the bottom where the pointer is move it to the right.
