Deus Ex: Human Revolution Review - The Rageaholic

- The year is 2011. It's a time of virtually no innovation. The same music, clothing and games that were popular 15 years ago are still popular today. Corporations have more power than the gamers themselves.
If you want to make enemies, try to change something.
Ah.... the days when people were optimistic about Teef.... how nostalgic.
Watching this almost a decade later, when he mentions that restaurants will not serve food I think Razor was clairvoyant.
6:30 Eidos definitely were aware they were taking a page from Robocop because in the game at the police station there was a room labeled Det. Alex Murphy, both cops in the room were talking about an 80s sci fi movie
ModPallet and one of them is named Alex Murphy.
for a music guy, I can't believe you didn't mention the awesome sound track
Heavy synth soundtracks are always cool, but they're not terribly novel
I am surprised Squeenix hasn't made a "Definitive Edition" of Deus Ex yet for PS4/XB1
Cause they did that already for Wii U, and it was actually good.
If they updated the control scheme, they'd get my money.
The only thing I found disappointing about HR was the ending. The "boss fight" at the end as well as only fighting zombies in the final area was pretty lame. Sad considering the original's Area 51 was actually one of the most satisfying end game areas I've ever played through.
couldn't agree more . Any way you look at first Deus Ex it was fucking great
Agreed. I actually *hated* the complete sequence between the 3rd boss fight (which was the worst part of the game cause I made the *wrong* choice) to the very ending.
I miss some of the simple quality of life details in Deus Ex: Invisible.. Like a flashlight on your Pistol and unique Variants that you could choose to upgrade with weapon mods.. Other than that, I felt like I did when I was introduced to the Series. Minus laughing so long I died the Skyskraper Attack because I picked up a body and threw it (Invisible War - Xbox)
"It's been a long time since I've actually sat back during play and processed how much I was enjoying the game". Damn right, I had that exact feeling during this game.
dude definitely the best review ive seen of the game. seriously, no shit
The closest thing to a Robcop game we will get, and I hope the sequel takes notes from Neuromancer. On a related note... *How about a Robocop review*? Huh? huuuh??? ;D
Overall I liked Deus Ex HR but the press button for ending here sequence, and the weird rabid but hilariously non dangerous raging cyborgs during the end game was a little disappointing.
Now that the Thief reboot has wasted my time (but never will do so again), I am itching to play the Director's Cut of DXHR. DXHR was definitely one of the best games of the past 5 years.
Man I love this game, damn near perfect
This game could win game of the decade. I mean the directors cut the one I got. Couse I bought this game 3 years late
9 years later and this game is still just as fun to play. Masterpiece.
Razor, your comments at the end of this video game about how we may be in for an amazing Thief 4 make me sad :(
I always wondered why the 3 bosses didnt all jump Jensen during the encounter with Barret. They are all there but no Barret gets a goodluck and they leave a guy who is clearly able to dispatch all their guards who they failed to kill once and is now augmented.
This was an awesome game. I only hope the upcoming sequel will be just as good.
Aeon Williams What? What wrong way?
After playing this game for 20 minutes at a friend's house I want it bad. Sure this game has some problems, but that only means it's not perfect. I never realized how much I've missed a good Deus Ex game. Great review Razorfist. I loved the closing gag.
So young, so innocent, but then again, weren't we all before tief.
Thank you for giving this game the respect it deserves.
I was ready to say the game stands in my top 5 all time favorites.
Then came the ending.
My annoyance with the cinematics is that the TRAILER's looked amazing, but there was a step down once you actually look at the cutscenes in the game. Not to mention stuff happens in the trailers that don't happen in the game at all.
Heard the Wii U version is really good. I gotta get it first before I make judgements. I didn't get a chance to play this yet.
Dude, I just discovered your videos, and I love them all. You rock bro. Subbed no question. This was my GOTY
Something I love is when you do Takedown done by a button prompt. NO QUICK TIME EVENT to do it. That made me smile.
I've never actually seen this review. It's hilarious.
I was thoroughly amazed by this game in 2012 when I first played. I was even more amazed that it was the 3rd in the series and I never heard of it
FUCK YEAH!!! I was waiting for this, you just made my day RazorFist, Thank you!!!
Great review! Spot on with some problems I had, no food, forced to fight bosses despite being entirely updated to be a stealth character.
But all besides that this game really delivered on content. Very happy the game turned out this well made.
Funny how you mention Metal Gear Solid, as when I played the game, I was like "this sort of reminds of MGS stealthing, I like it". Then the first boss comes and destroys me and I was like "Well it certainly doesn't have it's boss fights for sure lol.
Anyway the boss fights in Human Revolution were dreadful. First boss fight was me going around a pillar to dodge bullets and spam granades and then shotgun blasts to the face. Then the next boss fight was just weird. It was pretty cryptic, so I can't even remember what you had to do exactly.
So yeah please don't try to do boss fights unless you know what you are doing, because if you do not, it will suck balls.
The one good thing that came out of ME3 is the fact that I was pissed off enough to look for videos bashing it and I stumbled upon your channel. Your reviews are exactly what I thought of ME1,2,3 and Dragon Age: Origins. I'd never played Deus Ex before so I kind of just shrugged this game off as just another RPG but after watching this review I'm about to buy it as soon as I post this comment.
Ok RazorFist, now that I've got your express attention, your reviews are totally awesome man!!! Plus all the similes you keep using remind me of a rage-induced US version of good ol' Edmund Blackadder. Keep em comin! And all hail Thief 2! :D
First video of yours I've seen. I like your presentation. I'll check out more.
I certainly hope you've aquired a better microphone since this.
I'm looking for a game that makes you think.
Would you recommend this over LA Noire?
0:39 Oh God the guilt. I'm so sorry police dude I unnecessarily screwed over and tranqued.
So one moment I am sneaking around guards unseen, the next moment I am firing rockets in side of a mech. Yeah great boss battle. A boss battle is meant to be an exam for everything you have learned up to that point in the game, not just a cool encounter. At least in HR you are still entrenched in the basic gameplay mechanics.
0:52 an expandable inventory
thank God for that
1:58 -- Well, I'm gonna have nightmares for weeks. Thanks, Razorfist!
I have to say I really like your reviews, I just found your channel and you have gained a new sub. But MGS is my all time favorite game. It's true that it got to the point where the cut scenes are extremely long, but It's not a game for everyone and I respect your opinion. That said the original MGS was and is one of the best games ever made.
5:46 Hnnnggg, which game uses that alert logo? Immense nostalgia feels causing my sphincter to clench uncontrollably...
Finally finished this game after buying it at your recommendation. Loved it. I'm definately replaying it.
The post-credit scene confused the hell out of me but I recognized the original Deus Ex's soundtrack even though I've never played the game. I guess I'll finally have to play that game. Hope the mechanics haven't aged *too* much.
Razvan Constantin The end credit scene with Megan Reed and Bob Page? I've always believed it had her working on the Gray Death or nanoaugmentation.
If you do go play the original, make sure you install the Shifter mod. It cleans up a LOT of the clunk in the game.
Once you've done that, the game is still a little clunky (especially at the start), but as you get more options and tools and your personal skills improve, you'll find that there is a dizzying amount of depth and solutions to various problems. Hell, several of the boss fights can be outright skipped/instantly won if you find the right solution or make the right decision at an earlier point in the game.
Aegix Drakan Thanks for the tip about the mod! Will do, I've heard nothing but good things about Deus Ex's story and that's what I'm mostly interested in.
Just finished this game, waited to finish it before i watched your review. It was worth the wait, i love your take on the game, and i agree it's one of the best if not the best game I've played. However i play far less games so don't knock me for that assesment. Have to beat the next one so i can watch your superb review.
Dude, you're funny as hell and you bring up alot of valid points in your videos. Subscribing now.
This game was my first Deux Ex , loved it from start to almost the end.. the endings were kinda disappointing but didnt stop me from starting a second run on Lethal way
8:20 .........Oh my sweet summer child.
Keep up the awsomeness Razorfist.
P.s you should do more Vlogs.
The AI becomes a joke when you stealth take down a guard besides another guard or you jump between covers in front of a guard.
Well said my man. Well said. While I'm sure we'll disagree at some point (and your FF7 video still seems like fanboy bait), I'm glad I got you wrong there. You have a generally refined taste in gaming, you're actually interesting to watch, and I feel I'm considering games differently by hearing your points (I'm even reconsidering my opinion of Duke Nukem Forever somewhat). Deus Ex: Human Revolution is so far my top game of 2012 (I bought it late), and it deserves that.
I was practically rolling on the floor when you were going over the AI. It's so true.
I was baffled at the shittiness of the cutscenes, I mean compared to the trailer which was just amazingly done, they looked like they were converted, and then compressed and then converted another 3-4 times. They should have stuck to the game engine and that would have been excellent, thank jumping fucking Jesus they only had a limited budget for the cutscenes on the Missing Link so they did most of the important shit in the game itself. And the Director's Cut is just, awesome, the boss fights are still present but I no longer have to carry a pistol around with me only for the purpose of fighting the boss I'd have otherwise evaded or had the robots convinced he's the one who tried to kill WALL-E.
@xRazorFistx What brand of sunglasses are they, anyway?
Hey, RazorFist, I was wondering what you thought about the actual augmentations. I honestly felt they were kind of....meh. Like yes I could hack into any computer as quickly as possible and jump without damaging myself...but I really got the sense that most of the cool stuff was already unlocked in the beginning of the game and the upgrades were merely slight tweaks to your already unlocked abilities.
I'D BUY THAT FOR A DOLLAR!
Your dad said the samething to your mom.
I got addicted to the mini-hacking game ,my all time ps3 favorite .
@xRazorFistx And now you convinced me to get a game I didn't want.
I didn't ask for this! XD
Also, I almost went to a nerdgasmic comma when you were talking about Robocop throughout the entirety of this review (Robocop is easily one of my favorite films of all time). I must say, you keep getting better and better with each new episode of The Rageaholic series. You never disappoint me not once, RazorFist! :D
Glad you mentioned the cutscenes could have looked better in this game. Thought my glaucoma was getting worse when I watched a playthrough on RUclips.
Jonathon Jacques-Belletete does in fact cite Ghost in the Shell as an influence to the visual style of DX3 during an interview, just because he didn't mention it in a single interview does not render its influence null. Jonathon also say's that he was influenced by the architect Zaha Hadid as well as Scandinavian architecture as a whole.
Hey are you planing to buy a wiiu just to play the director's cut?
Your review has helped me see this game in a new light
Well, I guess what I'm trying to say is that I can live with it, because the vast majority of the time I played Thief, I did not know that even existed.
I honestly wouldn't mind the tech arrows, maybe they just add efficiency to the Crystals, perhaps Eidos just feels obliged to make up for the lack of Steampunk in DS.
Oh well, can't judge until some actual gameplay is revealed. Everyone thought DX: HR was going to be shit when the first details were revealed, but we know how that turned out.
Again what was the name of the tune in the begining of the video? Awesome!
Iron Maiden - Deja Vu
Enter "I didn't ask for this" joke here in reference to you trading in HR for Dark Souls.
Part2: There have been examples like Planescape Torment where the player CAN directly affect how the avatar would react to a situation or have x opinion that still makes sense within the context of the narrative. Anyone remembers the long list of answers to the question "What can change the nature of man?" or when you have to choose "I regret.....x "?")
Even CHELL from Portal had a reason to not talk (she didnt want to give Glados the satisfaction of responding to her talk) Why Freeman does?
I would trade a box of Oreo O's to go out and buy Deus: Human Revolution right now. By the way, I'm surprised you didn't go into further detail surrounding GT/Gameinformer's criticism of the game's graphics. Phenomenal review, though.
Out of curiosity, do you plan to do a Robocop review in the near future?
I love a good stealth game and playing this has given me the same feeling as when I first played Thief: Deadly Shadows. I'm playing this game for the third time and still discovering new things.
I think that the first game offered a lot more in the way of being able to customize your character than this one did, and could have included more skills. Also, the endings only required you to make one choice, as opposed to taking different paths along the way. That said it was still a pretty good game and I agree that it did require you to actually think about your next moves, but I hope that they decide to increase the customization in the next title.
I have a question, if you don't mind...
In the case of making a movie based on Deus Ex: HR, would you act in it?
*I*, personally, can't see another actor doing like Adam...
You look like him, and you are his voice, so... why not?
(It would be terrible to hear Adam with a clear and melodic voice. It has to be your voice)
Anyone know the name of the song at the start of the video?
about what u said around 7:20 about cutscenes, in director's cut edition of the Deus Ex HR, the development makes sure to point out the reasons why didnt do exactly what u said. they wanted, but for some reason i dont recall they couldnt do it
What do you get with the pre-order?
Speaking of Robocop will you do a review on the movie, the series, or the video games?
Great review Razorfist, I've heard a lot of great things about this game, I'm going to need to pick it up
Will you be getting the director's cut?
Wait you're the voice actor?! Thats so awesome!
There are no stealth kills, only stealthy non-lethal take downs. It's actually one of my biggest issues with the game. Why you can play the game any way you like, Eidos does an awful lot to steer you into the stealthy, hacking, non-lethal role.
The takedowns for instance. A non-lethal take down is easier to do (press as opposed to hold so you can spam it easier), silent (lethal can be heard a mile away), and on top of that provide more XP.
Hmm, I usually take your reviews with a grain of salt, but this made me want to buy the game, just like your LA Noire review (Which I did buy because of your review). I've been subbed for a long time, and I even have you in my suggested channels box, but I don't know, your Catherine review felt very mean and confusing.
I mean, as in dampness and heat actually crystallized into arrow-tips.
In the originals, you just found elemental arrows in areas where that element is present. You might find a water arrow near a swimming pool or a fire arrow near a fireplace, but that's about as close as it gets to showing the elements.
Honestly, I thought that it was just specially crafted/enchanted arrows, not the elements actually crystallizing and Garrett applying them to the arrow-tip until I played DS.
It's so true about the AI, I knocked down a couple of cardboard boxes and the guards got alarmed of that.
Thief 4 is in good hands now but exclude the boss fights.
The fact that HR is so good makes the limitations stand out on2nd play:
-stealth takedowns(not normal) shouldn't use battery..level design&enemy positions can balance this
-Need a box to climb over a6ft wall?climb mechanic&make other walls higher
-Points for taking people out? It's actually harder to sneak past them
-Dishonoured,hitman punish you for taking out guards
-points for hacking through a door-the reward should be the loot, better lvl up system
-stopped by a fence when i have blade hands?
Dues Ex human revolution is amazing I mean I can see why no one with taste liked it
Gah! how did i miss this in my sub box!?
I knew you like this game Razorfist :) , i also think this one of my favorite Stealth/action games of 2011.
Ok so i know i am very very late to the party but i just watched this reveiw and was like "huh maybe I should pick this game up" then lo and behold i log into x box live and what game are they giving away free this month? Deus Ex Human Revolution! It would seem the gods hath spoken
that the Sentry bot gave me PTSD
Boss battles need to be outside the box, something different enough from the main game, that provides something new and challenging while also not being completely different to the point where game mechanics change completely. MGS has a variation in boss battles, thats what made them great, some were more restrictive while others allowed more choice. Important point is the battles were all different so you werent doing the same thing twice. I think thats important in keeping the player hooked.
Epic stuff man. Eloquent rage is hard to come by these days...
Not surprised to see Deus Ex: HR been excellent. I mean, the main theme, Icarus, already yells EPIC!
THANK YOU BASED ROBOCOP
Speaking of Detroit's icon, I think it would be awesome for your next movie review to put the disappointing Robocop sequels out to dry and if you are brave enough to muster it, Frank Miller's Robocop comic from Avatar Press. Frank Miller claims this miniseries is what the original script was before Hollywood had it put through the script doctors, but it's filled with horrendous dialogue, bad art and more pointless fanservice than Catherine
Great review, I completely agree. Finally, a game that's true to it's roots.
Think I'll go start my second playthrough. This time I'll kill everything that can be killed and see how it impacts the story. Hopefully Sarif will mention my killing everyone in the city and piling them in front of his office as a sacrifice to my creator.
Blindfold and Xavier, nice. I only played Deus Ex once, I never realized how much I've missed. Now I know what to try when I get some free time.
on what platform do u own the game
Would you mind doing a review on it. Btw i like your vidds, even if i dont agreee with some of them. Nice work.
(cont) He mentions this in an interview with EDGE magazine, but not elsewhere, just because he didn't mention such a fact in every single interview that he has conducted does not give valid reason to state as a fact that no influence was from Scandinavian architecture if someone was to suggest so.
Thank you for posting this before I leave for Marine Corp Boot camp. God - fucking - speed Razorfist!
I might be way too late to the party, but does anyone else remember that boss fight which becomes impossible because of a choice you had to make at the start of the game?
I had gone for a full stealth build and that boss completely wrecked me. While incredibly infuriating, it was also immensely immersive. Obviously the bad guys are using a virus cure to inject you with code that can turn off all your augmentations. Leading to a situation where your are completely helpless against their agents. But from a mechanical gameplay sense, it was a game breaking moment. This was the boss fight with the most potential for divergent tactics, which they obviously didn't do.
Ghost in the shell is a comic, which was a japanese animated film(1996) which turned into a television show(2002). Deus Ex HR story matches the tv show alot more.
The same can be said about Jack Slate when it come to anger issues having anger issues.
I thought he was gonna say the line "stay out of trouble!!" Hahahaha!!!
I never saw the T1/T2 crystals that way. Maybe that's also why I never considered that DS did it somehow better.
To me the difference is that in the originals, there were crystals in their natural forming areas, and also collected ones that people had stored, and none of them had anything to do with "arrows". They were just the crystals afterall. In DS none of the crystals outside shops were collected and stored. They were all in their natural points of formation.
As good as Human Revolution is, the thing it most succeeds in doing is proving just how Goddamn fucking amazing of a game the original Deus Ex actually is. HR is (most likely) going to easily be one of my top three games of 2011, if not number one overall. The original is without any question or hesitation one of my top three games EVER. Still, the last game I enjoyed playing this much was Borderlands back in '09.
