For those who don't know Peter Pan has traditionally been played by a woman because the original Broadway charles Frohman reasoned that a man would be wrong for the part, and if they cast a boy, the other children “would have to be scaled down in proportion.” English law prohibited the use of minors under 14 on stage after 9 p.m. So a woman it was.

I am fine with having a woman play a young boy in Peter Pan. I grew up on Mary Martin's version. My father recorded it on his old Wollensak reel to reel and my siblings and I learned all the songs by heart. I think we can still get most of the lyrics right even all these decades later. What bothers me here is the actress displays all the limp-wristed mannerisms and vocal whispery flourishes of a girly woman. Martin took the trouble to act like a lad, a bit more swagger, a bit more broad and brash in her gestures. It doesn't take much effort for the details, fists on hips, feet planted far apart, head held high.

No you can't have a woman singing and say that's Peter Pan. Terrible.

It was always played by a woman. There was no way to use a man, and a teenage boy would grow too fast, let alone the boys voice changing.

@@gigimills3504 It's one thing to have a woman playing the role bc of the reason you state but it was done tongue in cheek and playfully. The actor and the production, and the audiences had fun with it. This is more like turning Peter Pan into a feminine, noncyc, transgender man... it really ruins the original source which is both wonderful and profound enjoyed by generations. I don't fault the actor for it. She's almost just acting it as herself. But the role is that of Peter Pan and that is entirely missed.

@@trex1448 You do realize that the role in the Peter Pan musical has always been played by a woman? Mary Martin originated it in 1954, it's basically the same as it has been for nearly 70 years and how it was intended by the creators of the musical.

@@trex1448 I don’t see that much difference in this and how Sandy Duncan did it.
