I think you did the right thing. As drivers we have to draw the line and cover our own ass because we're responsible. Many years ago when I first started driving I was delivering to an apartment building in Brooklyn and the guy asked me to back up on the grass to make it easy for him to unload so I did. Two weeks later my companies being sued by this apartment building because they said I damaged and underground oil tank. Moral-of-the-story I don't do anything like that since then without clear written authorization.

I bought a large piece of property in Kentucky. After buying it, I hired some people to cut down some trees where the driveway was going to be. And I made sure that the driveway was wide enough for the heavy equipment to get to the future homesite. It was a curvey driveway, so you could not see the house from the road. Then once the trees were cut down and hauled away I hired another company to put in the driveway, a simple gravel driveway and plenty of space in the curves for a semi truck to make it. The single story house with a cement poured full basement went up with not one problem. Some people can understand that one single tree can hold up a process of building a home. They only care about themselves. I even had a large shed delivered for my future cow and pig barn. Not one problem. All the delivery drivers thanked me on giving them enough space in the curves and plenty of space to turn around. It took 8 months from when the first truck came with a trackhoe to dig out the basement till the house was ready to move in. I'm glad I got everything ready for that build. Oh the total property was 25 acres, and the house sits up on top of a hill. I'm loving it.

You're a level-headed and reasonable chap and willing to help those that will meet you half way.

To them being on commission which majority of them are, one problem, they don't see what the truck drivers have to deal with. Smart idea to video every delivery, so when a customer starts complaining. Then the store manager sees the problem... And you being the Truck Driver, unwritten rules is that you protect yourself, the truck and trailer, and the customer. So if something goes wrong, you have the video evidence. I've hand bombed tons of material like that from the curb side. Some times when your on a site you do what you gotta do. Hand dug foundations 9 feet deep because the city says no heavy equipment to protect the tree and erect a tree protection zone. If they find heavy equipment there or you cut a root bigger than about an average bicep they fine you. It is what it is. Doesn't matter if it's reasonable, it's the job. Can't expect the driver to take a fine or risk his neck for you. The only time we really put our foot down my site super was spending tens of thousands a day and Home Depot next door refused to cross the road and wanted to charge for delivery anyway to drop the material in the parking lot. My boss told me to tell him we will take our business to a place across town where he knows the guy and his muli-billion dollar construction company will boycott the store. They complied pretty quick and we weren't even asking for them to go on site, just drop it outside the exterior fencing to the property. When i just dropped 50 grand this morning and over 90 grand the day before and I'm paying for delivery, you can cross the damn road.

These customers have to realize not all drivers are equal in their ability, one guy can clear an opening with 2 inches of clearance on each side and another needs 5 feet of clearance on each side. Asking a driver to do what is beyond their skill level is asking for damages, they should be glad he does not risk what he is not comfortable with.

@@SaffordDelivery I think people do not think about the width of their load on a fork lift, they think about a trailer fitting down the driveway but they do not think about still needing to have room to use the forklift to unload the trailer and not do damage.

I know there are a lot of unreasonable people out there, but it seems to me you should have some equipment that moves materials length wise. It’s like a dog trying to carry a long stick between two close trees.

Our job is curbside delivery anything beyond curbside is at driver discretion and courtesy of the driver. But also it has a lot to do with site restrictions. We could have just gotten a helicopter 🤷‍♂️

This is the price you pay for living in big house that are situated miles from the actual kerb. Wouldn't it be faster to back up the drive and off load than put the stuff on you already took off and re -strap the load.
    No good deed goes unpunished.

Curbside means..curbside. "He refused to deliver the load!" "Sir, we have a photo of the load in front of your house."

There's a possibility you could have backed the trailer up the driveway, but again, liability: Damaged trees, damaged truck.

I can totally understand that rules are rules and curbside means curbside. Not sure how competitive your market is or the business but I will say that if you don’t bend those rules or kowtow then someone will and in this economy that can hurt big time. That can be loss of contracts. Hope it’s not the case

99% of our deliveries go beyond curbside It's not our intention to piss off the customer but when there are sight restrictions and there's nothing that we can do it's the customer's responsibility to make sure that the site is clear
