I know right!! This is such a gem , heard this when I was 13 now I'm almost 21 and still come back here every now and then. The transition at 2:43 always gives me chills!!
Got to thinking of this song, and her voice popped into my head. I haven’t heard this version in at least 10 years, and I didn’t even remember her name, but now I’ve found it again, and it is stunning. Her voice was crystal clear in my memory after all this time.
No I don't think so. Its orign is from early Scotland and was written as a male's perspective of his lover -- a female. Some years ago Nina Simone change the words to sing about a man with black hair --then sang it as a love song by a women about a man. At least one lesbian vocalist has sang it from the perspective of female about another female. I don't know why Cara Dillon chose it this format.
fanatastic song written in scotland motherwell will always be scottish christy moore stole it and admitted it. i just wish when people cover these songs they could have the decency to learn and sing the correct words
Black is the color is a traditional folk song first known in the Appalachian Mountains region of the United States in 1915, but most probably originating from Scotland, as attributed to the reference to the Clyde in the song's lyrics. The musicologist Alan Lomax supported this Scottish origin, saying that the song was an American "re-make of British materials. The first recording was made by Mrs. Lizzie Roberts in 1916 as "Black Is The Colour"
caras version of this song is by far the best . her voice is like an angel with the lyrics beautifully sung acompanied by the orchestra . christy moores version is way over the top . with the face contortions etc . cara sings with ease and makes the song her own .
Cara Dillon has an excellent voice, and interprets this song beautifully. But I can't help but feeling that I much prefer her stripped down versions of this song (see her other videos on youtube). There is something haunting in the starkness of this song as she performs it in a small combo- which is lost in such a "done-up" arrangement. As well performed as it is - by all involved - simpler and smaller might be more poignant for such a song.
when you hear other versions of this song from judy collins/christy moore /emile latimer/etc they fall into the shade .compared to this beautiful version by cara . she has the voice of an angel . and this live performance with the orchestra is outstanding from start to finish .
this is clearly the best version of this beautiful song by any artist . cara captures the tempo of the song outstandingly and the orchestration melts perfectly . i love it !
Quote: "Only Egomaniacs always sing from a personal, autobiographical perspective." I think that is sheer nonsense. Many folk songs are stories sang in the first person -- either singular or plural -- and they are most definately autobiographical and the singers are not egomaniacs either. One can SAY anything -- like "the moon is made of green cheese" - but does it mean anything?
The self indugence appears be something more specific of your own post. Or so it appears. No one said it was not a beautiful song or a fine singer -- did they?
So then what is your point? Do you even have one? The song remains as always a man's description of his "true love". The words and thoughts of a male about a female. So I guess I have nothing to accept -- so I won't. Thank you anyway.
Well in answer to someone below's question, 'how could someone not appreciate this beautiful performance,' I must say that having just listened to Christy Moore's stripped down version, this one comes off as overly grandoise and too Disney to appreciate. This song is about love haha, how can you say that there is anything personal in her performance? I mean, musically she does a great job, but the soul of the song has been ripped out in this painless, shallow rendition.
caras version of this song is by far the best . her voice is like an angel with the lyrics beautifully sung acompanied by the orchestra . christy moores version is way over the top with that drone and the cringe making face contortions .and what about those eyebrows ! .. in contrast cara sings with ease and makes the song her own ..also listen to her live version of broken bridges posted by fallingstar10 it is outstanding

I disagree that the English are predominantly of Germanic decent. Firstly the Normans were French/Scandinavians from Normandy. Also, after centuries of cross migration between the countries our heritage is mixed. I myself was born in London but I have both Scotish and Irish grandparents. Within the British Isles our DNA is firmly in the mixing bowl. It's only prejudice that is fixed to a location.
face contortions? thats bollix pal, that is called emotion and expressiveness and he didnt need no 50 piece orchestra to achieve this either, like it or not, if it wasnt for dear old facially challenged Christy, you wouldnt have even heard of this song, and the "voice of an Angel" Cara would be looking for a decent cover version to rip. how do ya like those Apples?
I sand this song to a newly married Hungrian couple at a roadside restaurant in Hungary, after our czech tour bus broke down on the way back to Prague from Romania......as a result we were invited to join the wedding party until the bus was repaired......needless to say, we do not remember pasingthrough any border crossings on the way back.........
caras version of this song is by far the best . her voice is like an angel with the lyrics beautifully sung acompanied by the orchestra . christy moores version is way over the top . with the face contortions etc . cara sings with ease and makes the song her own
I was aware that Scandinavia is a Germanic country. A study was done recently that showed that within the DNA of the English there is less decendents of Anglo Saxon origin then previously thought. The English genetic make-up is still contains a fair bit of the original English tribe which was Pict.
@thepiedjester The "N" word is always inappropriate!!! ALWAYS. Sometimes we have to look at ourselves and worry how WE are living, and strive to fix whats broken. It is easier not to judge others. Trust me, life goes a little better.
I have searched this site for the version I wanted.....I did not find it....it's old.....like 20+ years old. That is where this song comes from. No disrespect to this version.....but try to find the original....you will not be disappointed..... God Bless
i love the lyrics,it's how i discovered the song, but i wasnt expecting that kind of music so i'm kinda disappointed... is she gay? (just like that) "i love the ground whereon she stands" dont know why but i just love that part ^^
Can anyone tell me how to get this video. It's not on Amazon or anywhere else for that matter, nor even on Cara's web site. My wife is a big fan, and her birthday is coming up soon. She would love this DVD/video. Thanks!
cara says fleetwood mac have been a big inlfuence on her music . you can hear this at section 3:35 - 3:57 that reminds me of songs on the fleetwood mac albums like rumours. tusk.mirage.tango in the night etc

Whilst this isnt bad, I like Christy's better. Difference being, she mearly has a beautiful voice, where as Christy has a wonderful singing voice, and puts pure, raw emotion into his work. Fair play all the same.
I do see what you mean. Cara lowers her voice too much, as beautiful as it is... I like this song because my hair is jet-black also! I get asked about it all the time. I've resorted to telling them I descended from indians!
Actually Britain is England, and Scotland and Wales. The United Kingdom is England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The British Isles is England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. So think before you speak right.
Why would it matter if the orchestra was *British* and the song's *Irish*? Given that Ireland's in Britain, there's still the correct heritage. Unless, or course, you're ignorant enough to think that Britain= England...
I disagree, i think its great. Her voise is just perfect for it almost trembling at points. Ulster orchestra may a bit over the top but her best version was live at glastonbury with her own band..
like what i'm thinking. it's a really pitty, but: overdone. when you here this song, do you imagine everlasting irish love? i'm sorry, but i don't. i prefer the version of jenny & jane holohan.
@DonegalRaymie201 I admit that i never put such thoughts into this piece of music, but if youre right, it might be awesome. Nevertheless, i think its the sound that speaks for it self.
just listen to that sexy northern irish accent absolutely divine voice for another irish great sinead o connor as she moved through the fair a song that'll definitely give yez the shivers
me cousin remix black is colour tune coco and green check if u wanna see more on.... beboeggs2... too see more of (coco and green) 2devine playin live , and sure a comment fanks
@DonegalRaymie201 Thank you for educating DarkArtsPrincess15 on the history of this song and it's inception and formation into American folk/country music.
@jmppd As i said tastes are subjective. You like that and i like this more . so what? Somebody i know likes Nina Simone's version...So what? God loves diversity !
Does anyone have the Cara Dillon song "JOHN CONDON"?...I was sure it would have been on youtube, but alas, no. Please someone, upload this song,...please?
the orchestra is doing a good job..I like the instrumental thing...but i really don't like her voice..sounds terrible..does not fit in my opinion...love this song
Black is the color of my true love's hair Her lips are like some roses fair She has the sweetest face And the gentlest hands And I love the ground where on she stands I love my love and well she knows I love the ground where on she goes And how I wish the day would come When she and I can be as one Black is the color of my true love's hair Her lips are like some roses fair She has the sweetest face And the gentlest hands And I love the ground where on she stands I love the ground where on she stands Black is the color of my true love's hair Her lips are like a rose so fair She has the sweetest face And the gentlest hands And I love the ground where on she stands I love the ground where on she stands I love the ground where on she stands
There's an instrument that looks like a tiny trumpet @ 3:57 & they show it again twice more before the end. Does anyone know the name of that instrument? I've never seen one of those before but it looks to be to a trumpet what a piccolo is to a flute.
i agree totaly my friend . her voice was amazing during this live session looking at other videos posted by cagun she also done live versions of craigie hill and the lark in clear air . i also loved the live version of broken bridges posted by fallingstar10 . a really exceptional voice that sounds beautiful live or recorded.
1 million views in 9 fucking years? Am I the only person who watches this?!?

Goes to show you who appreciates excellent quality music, & who doesn't. Today's music, for the most part, is horrible.
No, we are a group of four.
Shut your foul mouth
Listened to this when it was first appeared here and still listening to it now. So beautiful.
Beautiful, pure, unaffected, heavenly voice. Thank you

this has to be the best version of the classic song . the crisp vocals & orchestra backing melt perfectly .

Absolute nonsense, this has nothing whatsoever to do with Ireland. It's a love song.
caras version of this song is by far the best . her voice is like an angel with the lyrics beautifully sung acompanied by the orchestra . christy moores version is way over the top . with the face contortions etc . cara sings with ease and makes the song her own .

Beautiful exactly how I imagined it sung... lovely

So very beautiful. A lovely, angelic voice. This makes me want to cry. It's sheer magic, just as all things Celtic are. :-)

I first heard this song with trance style mixed version.
though I prefer trance mixed one , i think this um.... original celtic one is good too ^^
nice voice i love it
her sound is slightly too sweet to sing this... slainte's version sounds more perfect In My Opinion =D but this is still nice.. the music that is
Black is the color of my true love's hair
Her lips are like some roses fair
She has the sweetest face
And the gentlest hands
And I love the ground where on she stands
I love my love and well she knows
I love the ground where on she goes
And how I wish the day would come
When she and I can be as one
Black is the color of my true love's hair
Her lips are like some roses fair
She has the sweetest face
And the gentlest hands
And I love the ground where on she stands
I love the ground where on she stands
Black is the color of my true love's hair
Her lips are like a rose so fair
She has the sweetest face
And the gentlest hands
And I love the ground where on she stands
I love the ground where on she stands
I love the ground where on she stands
Congratulations , I hope you are marrying a Paddy , , we make the best husbands!!!!! LMAO... have a good life and many irish children lol
Smile. She has a fine voice. I just seems to me like there are many better for a women to sing.
Way too over produced. It's. A folk song.....
Beautiful voice, one of my faves, thanks for posting.
It's pretty standard in Celtic music for a woman to sing a song written from a man's P.O.V., without changing the lyrics ;)
YAY MY NAME IS CARA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
not very common name though :(
But yay for finding someone else called cara :D!!!
for this kind of songs (sorry i not speak english) listen to John Jacob Niles, he's amazing (this girl's fantastic too)
There's an instrument that looks like a tiny trumpet @ 3:57 & they show it again twice more before the end. Does anyone know the name of that instrument? I've never seen one of those before but it looks to be to a trumpet what a piccolo is to a flute.
Check The BEnedy Glen by Caras older sister Mary Dillon...she was with the group Deanta. Talk about pure and haunting.
@DarkArtsPrincess15 semi accurate but the origins are celtic brought to america by either irish/scottish settlers
@DonegalRaymie201
"Amazing Grace" was written in America by a once slave owner who happened to be English.
I agree fully, but I have to say that for the parts where they kept the arrangement sober, it worked all right.
Check the trance version on you tube..
Daniel Kandi vs 2Devine vs Cara Dillon - Make Me Believe In
.
If you love beautiful voices check out Karan Casey's version of Black is the Colour.
@tm502010 Oh you're American, not sure if it's out in HMV over there? It is for a fact in the UK anyways
Christy Moore's version is miles better.Check it out[singer/writer of this song].Good effort though :)
I thought it was originally written from a woman's perspective.
ok. no wonder she's awesome, she is sister to Mary Dillon of Deanta. Both have amazing voices!
THE VOICE OF A GODDESS
Ireland or Scotland.. both are 2 pieces from the heaven up there on this earth ! and both have the sweetest music ever made !
I'm Irish 🇮🇪
If any one likes this type of singin look up caladh nua singin banks of the lee, amazin.
i kinda agree she does sound better on the album but she still has a beautiful voice
i agree totaly my friend . her voice was amazing during this live session looking at other videos posted by cagun she also done live versions of craigie hill and the lark in clear air . i also loved the live version of broken bridges posted by fallingstar10 . a really exceptional voice that sounds beautiful live or recorded.
Why did she say it as if the Irish are not good people?
i play this song over and over, it reminds me of some won i love so very, very much, the words are just how i feel.
no-one sings it better. love it to bits
@shanekeano1984 we can't tell what is more: her voice or herself
She is a great singer but it is looney for a women to sing it.
I thought the interest of this song was the intimity of the lad suffering...
bhuel tá glór an-mhaith aici ach is fearr liom fhéin version le Nina Simone.
Việt nam 1❤
The Twilight Singers do this song justice. Look for it.
Love Cara's voice
the instruments seem to be holding her back, great voice
Amazing version from Cara.
this is the most beautiful song ever!!! outstanding!!
thank you so much for sharing
@xLivxLovesxRonnyx ya must be a dub coz we still have our culture
sounds like she's decribing her true love as another woman...cool
Lovely performance - Cara's sweet vocals make her sound about ten yrs old!!! Beautiful and synmpathetic orchestration too. Wonderful
@BecauseIJustCan : I ndáiríre, tá fíor-amhrán sean-Appalachian!
