I've seen Cara Dillon in concert 3 times over 3 years and every time the concert was superb throughout. I felt the hairs on the back of my neck stand up when she sang 'The Winding River Roe' - a stunning performance. I can recommend all 3 Cds by Cara Dillon. I found her only by luck - I'm a Ralph McTell fan and she sang one of the songs he wrote for his frend Billy Connelly's Tour of Britain. She did an 'Ireland' variation of Ralph's song 'England'.
It being in the springtime and the small birds, they were singing Down by yon shady harbor, I carelessly did stray, the, the thrushes They were warbling, the violets, they were charming To view fond lovers talking, a while I did delay She said, "My dear, don't leave me all for another season Though fortune does be pleasing, I'll go along with you I'll forsake friends and relations and bid this Irish nation And to the bonny Bann banks forever, I'll bid adieu" He said, "My dear, don't grieve or yet annoy my patience You know I love you dearly the more I'm going away I'm going to a foreign nation to purchase a plantation To comfort us hereafter all in America" Then after a short while a fortune does be pleasing It will 'cause them for smile at our late going away We'll be happy as Queen Victoria, all in her greatest glory We'll be drinking wine and porter all in America If you were in your bed lying and thinking on dying The sight of the lovely Bann banks, your sorrow you'd give over Or if were down one hour, down in yon shady bower Pleasure would surround you, you'd think on death no more
She changed "Irish nation" to "Holy nation". I bet she did that because she is from the north of Ireland. Thebsojg is a traditional Ulster song which predates the partition of the island of Ireland by many many years. It was learned by Paddy Tunney (born Glasgow Scotland, but from Donegal) from his own mother Margaret Gallagher who no doubt learn it from those older than her well before partition.
This is heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. 💚✨ I have always loved Irish music so much. It hits different also since 2014 when I had to leave my own country and search for brighter horizons due to national financial disaster.
I live in Washington DC and am going to see Cara in concert at Joe's Pub in New York on Monday night, Sep 28. I can't wait to hear Cara's beautiful voice live!
Last year, went to see Cara at Shoreham, West Sussex, and her performance was faultless. This lady is perfection, and this year she will be at Worthing in October, and I will certainly see her again.
I fell in love with this song when I listened to it the first time even though I didn't get the lyrics. The voice, the rhythm, the sentiment I felt was so amazing that many years has passed I still could not help listening to it again and again.
just like cara's exceptional performance of black is the colour. she once again sings an outstanding live song from the heart with real crisp beautiful vocals . well done to cajun . for putting these lovely songs on youtube & giving us the chance to hear real breathtaking music .
WOW!!! This is so beautiful!!! I already loved this song, but with the orchestra it's sounding even more gorgous. I fell in love with her music when I was on a holiday in Ireland 4 years ago, but I never heard her sing live. She has a wonderful voice and I hope there will come a day I can see her in concert, but I don't expect her to come to The Netherlands....;) Well, we'll see, you never know. Celtic music is quite popular over here!
I am going to see Cara at Shoreham this Friday, and I am sure that the experience will be as magical as I expect it to be-She has a beautiful voice, and it will be the first time live for me. I have total respect for this amazing lady.

Cara does a first class job here. She delivers in the 'sean nos' style, with the backing of a full orchestra, to produce a hunting and spine-chilling vocal on a ballad about economic emigration. This lady is a real treasure.
This is one of many Irish folk songs stemming from the dreadful Irish potato famine which caused mass starvation and desperate emigration. 170 years later their population is still 1/3 below the pre-famine census. The great sorrow of this is sunk into this lady's soul and deepens her rendition greatly. Also listen to her versions of Garden Valley and Emigrant's Farewell. Makes me proud to be 1/4 Irish. All the U S can come up with is Lady Gaga and Britney Spears. Wish she'd tour here.
Europe is the throat of Europe. No hierarchy. Eire possesses much wonder. Alba possesses wonder. Northumbria possesses wonder. Cymru possesses wonder. Britanny possesses wonder. Bulgaria possesses wonder. Finland possesses wonder.
I am a Chinese, i know this song when i was in middle school, and love it so much, her voice is so beautiful!

Ah. the voice of an angel. I get goosebumps and tear up every time I hear her sing.

Cara has a lilting northern Irish voice, very musical, a sad tale sung with feeling, Great girl.
One of Ireland's Greatest Talent's. what a voice and lovely to hear the Ulster Orchestra in full swing.
And her sister Mary Dillon
Wonderful track! And Cara is so beautiful it almost hurts a little.
Wow- Don't knw how i'd never heard of her before. Lovely singer and such a sweet voice!
It being in the springtime and the small birds, they were singing
Down by yon shady harbor, I carelessly did stray, the, the thrushes
They were warbling, the violets, they were charming
To view fond lovers talking, a while I did delay
She said, "My dear, don't leave me all for another season
Though fortune does be pleasing, I'll go along with you
I'll forsake friends and relations and bid this Irish nation
And to the bonny Bann banks forever, I'll bid adieu"
He said, "My dear, don't grieve or yet annoy my patience
You know I love you dearly the more I'm going away
I'm going to a foreign nation to purchase a plantation
To comfort us hereafter all in America"
Then after a short while a fortune does be pleasing
It will 'cause them for smile at our late going away
We'll be happy as Queen Victoria, all in her greatest glory
We'll be drinking wine and porter all in America
If you were in your bed lying and thinking on dying
The sight of the lovely Bann banks, your sorrow you'd give over
Or if were down one hour, down in yon shady bower
Pleasure would surround you, you'd think on death no more
Beautiful lyrics.x
