When my son was born, the doctor said his hair was "black as night"; amazingly enough whenever he was fuzzy and wouldn't stop crying, I would sing this song to him and he'd come down and go to asleep.....I've always found Ms. Simone's music amazing and touching. Thank you for posting this song...I'm in tears.

I like this performance, but I also like the audience. They know when something special is happening, and they know how to let the quietness resonate. Seems like that is pretty rare these days.

All the lyrics of this version :
Black is the color of my true love's hair
His face so soft and wondrous fair
    The purest eyes
    And the strongest hands
I love the ground on where he stands
I love the ground on where he stands
Black is the color of my true love's hair
    Oh I love my lover
    And well he knows
Oh I love the ground on where he goes
And still I hope that the time will come
Still I pray that the time will come
When he and I will be as one
Lord When he and I will be as one
Black is the color of my true love's hair
Black is the color of my true love's hair
Black is the color of my love, so fair
Black is her body, so firm, so bold
Black is her beauty, her soul of gold
I carry my love in my heart
    Every... everywhere
And no matter where I go
    She is always there
I remember when she came to me
In a vision of my mind
I remember when she said to me:
    "Don't ever look behind"
She said: "Look ahead", and I would see
    Someone always loving me...
Her picture is painted in my memory
    Without a color of despair
And no matter where I go
Black is the color of my True love's hair

The setting - Nina Simone's Hair, her skin tone, the perfect makeup that brings out her Perfect... facial features, her outfit, the piano, NINA's graceful, elegant manner as she performs, the bare lighting...the still silence .. Is AN AWESOME piece of Artwork.
Then ... Emile Latimer delicately, delicately ... frames it.

Her melody that starts 4:00 until the end with the guitarist isn’t on any recorded version of this song is so beautiful and jaw dropping, another piece of proof that Nina Simone was a Classical Pianist and a Composer.
Every song she made it her own as well as adding flares from every classical era of music.

Being a grand pianist was her dream. But the almost insurmountable racism and segregation of that time kept her out of Julliard(?). Her anger and bitterness informed her singing and her whole life, eventually. Towards the end of her life, that's all she talked about. Tina Turner remained bitter about not gaining the popularity of Madonna back in their day.

Hard life.. I guess that is relative. I think she grew up in a pretty stable home. Two parents..Parents weren't poor and destitute...they supported her playing. I think she was very in touch with what was going on in the world and expressed it through her playing the piano. She wanted to study and play classical...but I doubt there were many prestigious (white) schools that wanted to admit her. I think she was so proud of her heritage and hated that people couldn't see how racism is stupid as f*ck. Like ..RESPECT ME. I am playing some good stuff. I am black.I am a woman. I am proud. I am great.

Yeah, You're right. But it isn't just about the environment and the condition she grew up in. She had many mental health problems like a bipolar disorder and was later in a unhealthy relationship with her husband who forced her to become famous. And you can have a hard life even if things are going well.
I think that Singers and all kinds of artists with mental illnesses are superior in expressing feelings.
For example Van Gogh, Munch or singers like Amy Winehouse and Nina Simone.

Black is the color of my true love's hair
His face so soft and wondrous fair
    The purest eyes
    And the strongest hands
I love the ground on where he stands
I love the ground on where he stands
Black is the color of my true love's hair
    Of my true love's hair
    Of my true love's hair
    Oh I love my lover
    And well he knows
Yes, I love the ground on where he goes
    And still I hope
    That the time will come
When he and I will be as one
When he and I will be as one
So black is the color of my true love's hair
Black is the color of my true love's hair
Black is the color of my true love's hair

    • @AlexGCronkleton
      @AlexGCronkleton 10 лет назад +1

Ian Buchanan If the words have been changed in America it is an American song. Song= lyrics + music. Perhaps it is a Scottish melody?

    • @TraveltheRedRoad
      @TraveltheRedRoad 10 лет назад +1

Only a couple of words were changed- it's predominantly the original Scottish lyrics barring the few references to Scotland missing. The tune is the same too- although she has clearly taken her own exceptional spin on it.

Roberta Flack famously covered the song, but contrary to the guesses here, 'The First Time Ever I saw Your Face' was written as a love song, in one take, over the phone, by Ewan MacColl, to Peggy Seeger. I was honored to call him a teacher, a comrade and a friend.

Since I knew the writer/author, and have spent time in his living room, and have seen his grammy for it, I can say that this is not so. He was a truly prolific collector of UK folklore, and was meticulous in giving credit to workers who created songs, so he also certainly did not steal this. To be clear, I am replying only to the thread discussing "The First Time Ever I saw Your Face"... MacColl was a legend, worth studying more deeply... Nina remains the Greatest of all time...
