  • When setting up the workshop, it was obvious the floor would take a hammering, but we needed something that was: 1) washable, 2) oil resistant, 3) non-slip, 4) durable, 5) non-porous, 6) relatively bright so we could find any dropped small parts, 7) wouldn't show the dirt more than necessary, 8) scratch and wear resistant, 9) could be renewed periodically without too much preparation, 10) would form a relatively thick layer, 11) not smell for months on end whilst curing. Our answer for this problem? Water Based Epoxy paint. It's provided a layer of 'plastic' over the woodchip flooring (which, in turn, is protecting the original pine floorboards), and pretty much does all the above. It needs renewing every 2 - 3 years of constant use and abuse, but when the work's done, it looks good as new. Here's our review of the product from Ask Coatings Ltd (no, they don't sponsor us), together with some video of it being applied and some observations about how it performs.

You’ve made me feel guilty about my garage floor (not yet) repaint job.
