Dear Canadians who are in favor of gun control, I have a question for you. Please tell me, how should I protect my life if my neighbor decides to break into my house with an axe and attack me? Let's say they are under the influence of drugs, drunk, or simply mentally prepared to spend the rest of their life in prison. Meanwhile, I am a person with a disability or frail physique, unable to physically defend myself against an assailant. Or perhaps there are several of them. I can't exactly say to them, "Please don't break into my home and kill me, it's against the law!" Or, "Please have a seat in the living room and have some tea until the police arrive to take you away." How can I feel safe and be able to defend myself if necessary in such situations?

And for a few details....the way of the proposed law and the timing of the announcement mean that it will come into effect in the fall....to legally acquire a handgun NOW in Canada involves a process that can take up to six months. There will be a rush on applications and sales of handguns for sure. How many beat the deadline is uncertain. Legally owned handguns will be grandfathered in....they will be legal to own for the life of the owner or if they are transferred to a son/daughter upon his death.
Once the law is passed handguns will have NO (legal) resale value.
All of the above is what is in the PROPOSED legislation as announced today. The final details will only be determined when the law is actually passed in the fall.....and it will PASS.
IMO opponents of the law have a point that the law will do nothing to stop gun crime tomorrow....but that is not the point....again IMO, Canada is playing the "long game" here. We will only see positive results of this law in one or two decades.

In many Scandinavian countries the people have very little tolerance of corruption, corrupt politicians usually serve justice very easily compared to the United States.

From the comments I saw I am beginning to build my opinion on the true problem of USA: US citizen have a trust issue with their own gouvernement/military/police.
I am French and nobody in France can cary a gun except the military on duty. Nobody in France even know own to use a gun (except hunters). It is just something that is not in our minds. We do not care about self defence because we are not afraid to be attacked. We understand that our police and our military and our government are working for us. They are our institutions ment to protect us from outlaw or outside invasion. And nobody in France fear the unbalance of forces with the police or the military.
I understand that for an American it can be science fiction. In fact from my point of view America's love for guns is science fiction...
And I guess that some pro-gun French people will say that I am a moron. But I am happy this way.

Spare me the talking points. It's not just theoretical. The numbers tell the story when it comes to whether having plentiful supply of guns available makes the public more or less safe. And unfortunately a lot of innocent people in churches, schools, hospitals, etc had to die for us to have these facts. So what seemed like common sense to you or me is now totally beside the point. Also I think it might help for some folks to realize they have been played by the gun lobby. Some of the same folks want to talk about big pharma or big tech but somehow they trust gun manufactures to care about something besides a bottom line. $$$
