Today we are announcing changes to the RUclips Partner Program (YPP). While our goal remains to keep the YPP open to as many channels as possible, we recognize we need more safeguards in place to protect creator revenue across the RUclips ecosystem.
What's Changing
Under the new eligibility requirements announced today, your RUclips channel, I Am Kristin, is no longer eligible for monetization because it doesn’t meet the new threshold of 4,000 hours of watchtime within the past 12 months and 1,000 subscribers. As a result, your channel will lose access to all monetization tools and features associated with the RUclips Partner Program on February 20, 2018 unless you surpass this threshold in the next 30 days. Accordingly, this email serves as 30 days notice that your RUclips Partner Program terms are terminated.
One of RUclips’s core values is to provide anyone the opportunity to earn money from a thriving channel. Creators who haven’t yet reached this new threshold can continue to benefit from our Creator Academy, our Help Center, and all the resources on the Creator Site to grow their channels. Once your channel reaches the new threshold, it will be reviewed to make sure it adheres to our policies and guidelines, and if so, monetization will be re-enabled.

Also, something I forgot to mention in the video.....the biggest issue with taking away the partnership from smaller RUclipsrs is we won't have access to some of the features, see RUclips's statement below:
"Access to end screens & cards: Note that your channel currently needs to be in the RUclips Partner Program in order to access certain features, such as end screens and cards that link to associated websites, crowdfunding, or merchandise sites"

Couldn’t agree more with what everything you said. As a smaller youtuber who uploads recipes and has worked hard over the last year to build an organic audience and genuine videos it hurts. They just pushed away so many small youtubers and people aren’t are going to join anymore. Like you said it’s not about the money it’s about the validation and feeling like they cared. Not like we aren’t important because we’re not making the massive bucks for them :/

Totally agree. The reason they made this change is to keep big RUclipsrs happy since the last demonetization. I made a video about this too. It’s a total of 10 million channels being demonetized and $1billion In ad revenue being taken away and redistributed to the larger channels.

So people did what RUclips required to become a partner and now RUclips is backing out of their end of the deal. RUclips should have made these requirements for new channels going forward and allowed the older creators to keep their smaller channels monetized.

Or if you have multiple channels (I have three) they should let you monetize all of them if all of them combined meet the requirements. Like you, I have one channel that meets the requirements, but I have been focusing instead on the new smaller channels.

We agree with you 100% RUclips has become music videos, Hollywood trailers, and large businesses building channels. It is no longer about RUclips...about at home creators. Our channel survived the cutoff - but barely. And it is an absolute insult that over 20,000 creators are being cut off. Money is the BIGGEST incentive in life (after intimacy) for people. Well, now those 20,000 + creators have less incentive to produce content. As they have been given a very high threshold.
This is so sad since I just started uploading to RUclips 8 months ago. Luckily I do it because I like making videos.
Its because RUclips have realised they have given too many idiots like Logan paul free rein and pay them stupid amounts. Ppl like him have ruined it so now everybody else has to suffer. Its totally unfair and i agree with you Kristin! Its gone downhill youtube has!!xx
Honestly, I think they don't really flip a switch. They just finally show us that they don't care about small creators and never really did. At least that's how I felt most of the time on this platform. I never made videos because of money and I prefer quality over quantity, which is why I won't reach the 4000 hours watch time and now they are telling me I am not worth the same as the creators who make 12 minutes videos in which they yell around or which is basically nothing more than an infomercial... Thanks for nothing, RUclips...

We all start small and evolve to be big. Either way if they can not value me now, I sure won't value them then.

My opinion, if they do not want small channels earning minimum revenue, mark my words, what will follow that, will be TERMINATION of these accounts, think logically, if they do not want you as a small earner, they sure as hell are not going to want you as a "no earner" I believe this whole bullshit with the "not suitable" has always been part of a bigger scheme of TERMINATING smaller channels, Not wanting to be the bearer of doom and gloom, but that's my prediction for the coming months

I've been on RUclips since 2008. Everybody wasn't in the partner program to begin with. Had no idea people were getting paid. Adding everyone into the program came later. It takes me weeks to create a cartoon and not even half of the 1 million views I get every 28 days are monetized. Not even half. At the end of the day, every RUclipsr's journey is different. If you truly want it, go get it.
There is another problem lately. I have crossed the new YPP Threshold(4000 hrs, 1000subs) and under monetization review. The monetization review has been more than two months now. No email confirmation from RUclips so far. Anyone there who faces the same problem?
A lot of my subscribers are commenting with this same issue. I just sent a tweet over to the RUclips team to see if they can provide some insight.
youtube is for you to show your self and or passion . I'm getting cut off to i got the same email . but that won't stop me from doing what i like and thats sharing

i started my youtube channel in november 2017 hoping that i could get 10k views by sharing links outside youtube but now youtube has shattered my plan completely. I don't think that i can gain 1k subs and 4000hrs of watch time ever in the near future.

I just reached the older cutoff of 10000 views on the day when RUclips came up with these new thresholds. I don't think RUclips fully understands how demotivating of an experience this is. I wish there was an alternate platform where we could all move to..
Totally agree. I was shocked when I found this out. I'm still going to keep working hard to meet the new requirements, but I think a lot of small channels will be completely discouraged and quit. And I think it will discourage a lot of people from starting in the first place because it will feel impossible! Anyway, good luck reaching the view time you need. You are obviously set with subscribers - no worries there! I'm here for any small channels that need support. Thanks so much for this video and your honest thoughts.

It's just like in the real world now....little guys finish last. Or in high school, the popular kids rule the school, while the not so popular kids go unnoticed. It's really no surprise.

I heard that one reason for this change is that it was becoming a "thing" for start up channels to steal our successful videos -- download them, and upload them as their own, to try to piggyback off our success and earn ad money off of highly viewed videos. The new protocols would make that impossible for anyone to create a new channel and start earning right away in this manner. However, I have many friends who are affected by this policy change and will lose their revenue.
I am mad too. I am returning the computer I just bought because now it’s probably won’t be able to afford it. So upset.
Natural Vibes lmao girl you wouldn't be able to afford it with less than 1k subs anyway. It's an investment once you put in that work and get monetized it'll still take time to accumulate enough to buy a computer. If I were you I wouldn't be doing RUclips for the money. I'd be doing it because it's your passion to creat content NOT to be rich. If your content isn't quality and you can't get 1k subs in 12 months that means obviously people aren't interested in your content
jolie bailon definitely agree. I mean for me I already have 1000+ Subscribers. And yes if you were doing RUclips simply for $$$ you will be disappointed. I really enjoy producing videos. I have learned quite a bit from comments on my videos too.

I am upset to about this... And I would think we should be grandfathered in since we already have an channel and that should be to anyone else wanting a monetized channel started after this announcement.. I had to ask my daughter if they saw a Paul video like that, and yep... its true it can take one person to ruin it for others..

I also thought I had pretty many views, about 33000 minutes in the last 365 days, but that is a huge distance from what I am required now all of a sudden. This is discouraging, first of all. And second, why is my work not paid any more? No, I wasn't making much money, obviously, just a tiny amount, but I was looking forward to grow. Now I don't even get this tiny amount form February, 20th, wtf?
They are taking things back to how RUclips was when it started. I've been posting since 2009 and back then you had to have 1000+ subscribers and go through an application process to be a part of the partner program. It took me a little over a year to get to 1000 subs, I applied, was accepted, etc. So when RUclips opened it up to where everyone could monetize I felt it was a bad move. RUclips wasn't prechecking the channels to make sure they were on the up and up. So I am not upset about the recent changes. I do have some smaller channels and they have been dropped from monetization because I don't have the numbers, but it's just making me want to work harder to show RUclips my videos are worth putting ads on. Anyway, just wanted to share my opinion. I'm sure everyone has their own thoughts on this topic and if we don't agree that is totally fine.
Like you I put ALOT of effort into editing & uploading videos. I've got over 450 videos on my channel so you can imagine how long I spent on those. And now to RUclips I am nothing to them. Not gonna earn any beer money from my channel at all so what's the point. I was trying to help people but also need a little help myself which is why the small amount I made seemed to make it worthwhile. I've stopped uploading at the moment.

What if I can't acheive that in 12 months?
What nobody shows I've had my channel for 9 years and easily get 3,500 views a day but even with that my channel will lose monetisation next week. I'm gutted. You just got to keep plugging away but unfortunately it looks like RUclips will only look after the big players now who make them lots of money, and I'm not one of those! RUclips is just making a bad decicion instead of just punishing bigger creators who are making bad content. this is not fair for everyone and We do not want RUclips to do this.

So this is really unfair and we are deff being punished for other people's mistakes. Well I need 602 subs and 85,000 mins by Feb 20th!!!!

It kinda sad that it comes to this. I was planning to make another channel for all my toy related videos but I don't think it's really worth to make a new one because of the high requirements. I guess my dream to become a full youtuber died when they announced this new rules. Oh well!

I have to agree with you. It seems like smaller channels that are just starting out (or that has less momentum) are being pushed aside. I started my channel a few years ago, but in the last year, I've really started to work harder and create more content. I joined the YPP and was accepted, but then they changed the rules right before I was eligible, and then changed them again. Someone on another channel was pushing others to join and use RUclips as a way to make money, and I warned them that RUclips was about to change because of their wording. Even now, if at any point in time, you slip below that 4000 hours in a 12 month period, they can remove you from the YPP.
The requirements arent that high in my opinion. Why should youtube pay for a channel that isn't getting views anyway? I know I'm in the minority here. But maybe you should work harder to get the those thresholds. If youtube is something you want to do full time then put in the effort. Its simple.
I say screw RUclips but I'm still making videos. We'll see if I survive purely on free content creation 😅
We use RUclips for free. It's their playhouse so we play by their rules. If you have to dance for a few sheckles, then dance.
Luckily I have enough watch time, but it honestly sucks for everyone else.
I am affected aswell, I use this as extreme motivation to get up there! When situations keep you down you need to step up and show the world what you are made of!
This also saddens me... i'm trying really hard to get to that threshold. But as a small youtuber, it's been really tough to grow :(

As a small RUclips channel that attempts to provide high quality content this news is tough to digest. Amazingly I had 11,000hrs of watch time but only a few subscribers.

upload 400 10 hour videos all at 144p so they upload fast and don't take much space. Just make them of a single picture and have a them all open in tabs on a friends computer.

what gets me the most is that they think this is encouragement to work hard... like i haven't been doing that the whole time
At first I was frustrated by youtube's new monetization rules but after giving it more thought for a few days and watching other creators thoughts I see it from a different perspective. Now I am more motivated after learning about the reasons behind their change. So now I have been thinking more about doing whatever I need to do to build my channel. I haven't put up very many videos and I'll be first to admit that I haven't put forward a lot of effort as far as creativity. I have 4 channels altogether. 1 is for the jewelry we make ( I will build on that one too.) 1 has my pet pythons, ( I have the most number of videos there.), The other is horseback riding on desert trails with music, I think I did pretty good with the last 2 but I've pretty much abandoned them. Haven't added anything in years. So I am thinking of closing those down and one by one uploading those videos on North to Hope on "Throwback Thursday" or something. I also have old video clips of my chickens and horses buried in my PC I could edit and also put on Thurs. I also need to make better thumb nails for the few videos I do have up and maybe even re edit them. I am at home full time now so I have time to make it a part time job. I don't expect to make enough to pay the bills but hope to build it enough to make enough to feed our animals and maybe get a better camera and wireless mic. I would love a wireless mic someday!.
Not all the small channel I have a big channel and they turn all my video yellow to have an excuse to wipe me.

The biggest thing that disgusts me about this decision is the fact that they say it's to protect the viewers from spam and reposts yet I make my own videos, and see all kinds of reposts and fake click bait thumbnails with over 100k subcribers so how does this control them?

What does this 4000 hours in 12 months even mean?
What nobody shows it means that you need to get 4000 hours of views over a 12 month period to be eligible to get paid.
I have 42 subs and it's impossible for me to achieve that in 12 months...What if it takes me 2 years?

I currently have 974 and I think I may hit 1,000 when the time comes. But the thing is it took 3 years for me to get there, and the problem is that newer and smaller channels will have an even harder time trying to get there. We don’t need this.

I thought so but am checking into it. I saw a livestream on twitch today and someone was just eatinhg tons of fast food.... My YT channel is just variety to build my numbers before really applying myself as if a payless job. Now this comes and I am really upset that I have to move all my videos and YT has turned into just a search engine for me, for the most part. I cancelled 3 uploads I had to do today. I just do not know how to process all this punishment for just trying. The little people are the people who built YT. They may be big now... but every YT started at square 1 at some time.
I have done some research and the names of alternatives to YT with some obvious differences in the laws/rules/terms.:

Its a matter of principals and ethics to me to not support RUclips when they pissed all over my time, effort, channel's opportunity to grow and enable relation for whatever the variety video that may just make someone smile, laugh, think, or aware.... Just my perspective.
I am completely agreed with you. they should find some other ways to solve problems instead of punishing innocent RUclipsrs who are putting lots of time, effort and money.
As someone who is just a viewer, I have to say I completely agree with you. I haven't liked the direction RUclips has been going in for awhile now. I hope someone comes along and creates a site that is similar to what RUclips use to be, and gives everyone who wants to create content a platform to do so without all the restrictions that RUclips has created in the past year or so.
We’re in that very boat. We worked really hard last year and this to create some of the best content we could. We’ve been slapped in the face hard but will continue. We don’t do it for the money anyway, but it still makes us feel pretty bad and pretty much un- supported by RUclips. We’re being made to suffer because of the stupidity of some some of the larger channels and that’s wrong.
Us smaller RUclipsrs just have to keep pushing to re-reach partner status
All social media goes in this directions. Once a platform reaches critical mass it can do whatever it wants. I've never trusted other platforms. I use RUclips but the majority of my videos are unlisted and used to communicate with clients. I will never rely on RUclips for any kind of widespread distribution and certainly not for making money.
I'm kinda frustrated, I'm at 3,700 hours of watch time and I don't meet the "requirements" to be monitized anymore. SO close. I honestly don't think what RUclips is doing is fair. I put hours into editing videos as a content creator. smh

Right on. This is an insult to those who do not pander to get attention so they can make money. It hurts those of us who are trying to make artistic content that is meaningful.
