  • It took me over an hour to get home after a severe thunderstorm passed as I was filming this train, a tree FELL across the road very near the RR tracks! Plus check out the horizontal vortex (sideways tornado) in the sky over the train, no wonder that tree came down!!!

It looked like a squall line with mesocyclonic activity.Mesocyclones and tornadoes have a key difference. First, a tornado is characterized by severe and violent windstorms at ground level., while a mesocyclone is a rotating part of the storm above ground level..

According to Google: 'Roll clouds are a type of "arcus cloud," formed when updrafts and downdrafts churn the front edge of a thunderstorm (or cold front) into a sideways cylinder.' I have seen these before and they are freaky. Hope you got home all right. It is great to see people coming together to get a job done. Another fine video, Jason! Good thing that swirling air mass didn't touch the ground near you! BTW...love your excitement and enthusiastic commentary! BTW, there are certain types in Congress and local communities who do not want to see local citizens doing road clearing or any, other sort of work that is NOT provided by the government. They DO NOT want individual efforts to improve a community.....THEY want complete control of our lives from soup to nuts. Well done, lads!

@@Marcuswelby-nx2te ive had an up close & personal experience with the remnants of a dissipating twister, it was 20-some odd years ago, i was out on errands in my truck, the sirens were going, i had picked up a project to work on, and the wind picked up in classic tornadic rotation. So i sat right where i was, the truck was bouncing around like crazy, and after a few minutes it was gone, that was my real-life experience of the movie, "Twister". Shortly after that, i became a severe weather spotter.

My first--and so far HOPEFULLY only tornado was in Paw Paw, MI in September 2008. I was at the laundromat when the warning sirens went off. Went out to see what was going on (I'm a trained Skywarn spotter) and I heard this train-like rumbling coming from behind me. I thought, that can't be a train, they tore those tracks out years ago! Well, it wasn't! It was a TORNADO!

First tornado I encountered as an adult happened to take place at a location within earshot of nearby tracks. The 1996 (IIRC) Lindenhurst Illinois tornado was a surprise spin up tornado in November. No expectations except for rain. Group of friends would meet up at this village hall association in town for weekend LAN parties on the computer and we'd just finished setup on Friday night when there was a power flicker and a rumble of thunder so we shut down for the night and prepared to lock up and head home. One friend, my fiancee and myself step out the front door and i just say stop do you hear that? Sounded like a freight hauling along the Wisconsin Central about a mile or so away at first but then noticed it was just the roaring along the tracks sound and none of the banging, squeaking, squealing or the thrum of diesels. Fiancee just turns to me and all three of us just go tornado at the same time and book back inside to take cover.
After things calmed down we locked up and headed out and didn't see much outside of the odd branch down until we got closer to the main drag through town when we started noticing signs of damage. Following day you could follow the path from where it started with treetop damage to where it started doing real damage. Best we could figure was when we heard it it was still in the air to our southwest and approaching, dropped enough for the pressure difference to pop the door open at the hall as we took cover and touched down about 2 blocks away. Was able to track down the details on the tornado several years ago and was apparently categorized as a strong EF1 weak EF2 that tracked from Lindenhurst to Zion Illinois where it tracked out into Lake Michigan before disapating and was note worthy for having such a long track for a spin up tornado.

Those guys clearing the downed tree reminded me of my days on the brushcutter crew on the P&W RR here in eastern CT back in 1980 when they bought the Plainfield to Groton main. Those guys were doing exactly what I used to do - pick up the loose branches and throw them off to the side, and get the right of way cleared. The line we cleared hadn't been touched by Conrail or the PC for many, many years, boxcar tunnels down the whole line. Thanks for the memories, Jason!

The train is hauling some empty center rail cars and bringing them back to the timber cutting company. And the rest of the train are center rail cars with loads of what appear to be 2 by 4's for construction. So what's so exciting about that? The saw mill cuts up the logs and turns then into wood boards for building material. From the length of the train, it looks like there is going to be a lot of buildings and probably houses are going to go up.. Commerce on the move.

Reminds me years ago we were at Ben& jerry's ice cream factory in Vermont, and the clouds were twisting like that. Then there was lightning and sideways downpour. We just got out of the tour and ran to the flavor graveyard for cover. It was tented, then the tent started lifting. I ran to get the car, got soaked and picked up the family. We then drove to our hotel, never got to green mountain coffe! We went to the scoop shop another day near where we were staying.

What you actually saw is called a "roll cloud". Saw on once where I live over 20 years ago. I was at work and saw it come in on the horizon. Some other workers and I watched as it went overhead. It was like watching a carpet unroll overhead. It got really quiet and you could hear the rush of wind up above. There were no winds in the storm at ground level at work but the same line of storms reached our home and the wind picked up like crazy there.
